Singer-songwriter Ali Holder’s August 27 release of her stunning solo debut, In Preparation for Saturn’s Return, is written in the stars.Inspired by an astrological event in which the planet Saturn completes one full orbit around the sun and returns to the same point in the sky that it occupied at the moment of a person’s birth — occurring in 27-30 year cycles, it’s said to usher a person into the next stage of her life — In Preparation for Saturn’s Return is a deeply personal collection of originals that incorporate elements of Holder’s wide-ranging musical influences, from country legend Kris Kristofferson to indie rockers Florence and the Machine. Though Holder’s sound is rooted in folk, traces of R&B and blues can be found, and the pedal steel found on several tracks, like the country weeper “Drinking Double,” serves as a perfect accompaniment to her smoky alto. The 27-year old Holder, who has been performing since the age of 16, is celebrating her new album with a string of tour dates across Texas, beginning with a record release show August 24 at Austin’s Strange Brew and ending October 25 at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck in Houston. While the songs of In Preparation for Saturn’s Return are an intimate look at her past, they’re also a sign of her bright musical future.Upcoming shows includeAugust 24: Strange Brew – Austin (9:30 p.m.)August 30: Lucky Lounge – Austin (9 p.m.)September 7: The Royal Theatre – Archer City, Texas (6 p.m.)September 13: Superfly’s Lone Star Music Emporium – San Marcos, Texas (6 p.m.)September 13: The Phoenix Saloon – New Braunfels, Texas (8 p.m.)September 19: 502 Bar – San Antonio (9 p.m.)September 29: Soul of a Musician Series at Spicewood Tavern – Austin (7 p.m.)October 25: McGonigel’s Mucky Duck (opening for Phoebe Hunt) – HoustonFor more information on Ali Holder visit aliholder.com
