Coinciding with the evenings & weekends of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the inaugural Nolafunk Jazzfest Series 2012 lineup is now complete with the addition of Daptone Records’ Budos Band who, along with Hairy Apes BMX and special guests, will be a part of the Oddity Faire After-Party at Republic. (The Oddity Faire features headliner Primus at the nearby Sugarmill.)

It’s so interesting to ponder how the Grateful Dead, despite being self-described poster children for avoiding politics and activism and concentrating on music, really aren’t that. From the beginning all members of the Dead were rooted in San Francisco’s scene and are an iconic representation of so many different facets of a humanitarian persuasion.

One of the most apparent struggles for the “core four” surviving members of the late Grateful Dead is how to follow up a musical career without going about continuing the music of their previous band. And as we all know, calling Grateful Dead a “band” is simply a misstatement. It was a way of life.

1976 was a pivotal year for the Grateful Dead. After an 18-month hiatus that saw just four Bay Area appearances by the band, but also a phenomenal studio album, Blues for Allah, and a slew of solo projects, the Dead returned to the road at the beginning of June '76.
