A Deadheads Guide: What To Do In Boulder

With Dead and Company playing the first concerts in 15 years at CU’s Folsom Field this weekend we wanted to give folks some ideas what else to do in Boulder before and after the show(s).

Go hiking!  Yes – if you’re coming to Boulder for the first time, we have some of the best hiking trails in our backyard.  Some suggestions depending on your fitness level:

  1. Easy – Go hike Chautauqua;  very scenic, close to campus, and a nice easy loop for beginners
  2. Moderate – Mt. Sanitas - this is just a few blocks north of Pearl Street – take Mapleton west and right before you head up the canyon you will find the trailheads. This hike will take about 75 minutes or so. This hike can be a bit of a challenge for newbies. Just take plenty of water and some breaks when you’re feeling tired.
  3. Difficult – Bear Peak – This hike will take about 5-6 hours, only do this one if you’re an ambitious (and fit) early bird. This is a very pretty hike though.  ** Don't forget to clean up after your dog**

Drink Beer! – Loads of great breweries in town – many of them walking distance to Folsom Field

  1. Mountain Sun – brewing beers since 1993.  Started by a deadhead, one of the best places in town for some casual food, yummy brews, and good times
  2. Boulder Beer Company – Colorado’s oldest microbrewery.  Great outdoor patio, delicious beers, friendly staff and yummy food
  3. Walnut Brewery – Been serving beers in Boulder for many years, just down Broadway, about a 12-15 minute to campus - **Do not drink and drive - Boulder is small.. you can easily walk back to your hotel **

Ganja Heaven! – Yep, some folks from out of town may get to experience their first time in a dispensary. Some rules – must be 21 or older, your ID will be checked, only cash, taxes are high – but the herb is good. Do not drive and smoke, same rules as drinking and driving apply.

  1. Terrapin – Very close to the stadium and how could not stop at Terrapin!?
  2. The Farm – A bit north in town, but some great edibles, flower and more
  3. Fresh Baked Dispensary – 29th and Pearl, great location – just a few mins from campus, good flower, great edibles.

Go out to eat! – Boulder may be small, but we are spoiled rotten with tons of restaurants.

  1. The Med – Good Mediterranean food, great happy hour deals, sangria, pizza pies, calamari, etc.
  2. The Kitchen – All natural, organic foods, prepared daily, fresh, good service and right off the Pearl Street Mall
  3. Lucile’s – Cajun & Creole breakfast.. One of the best breakfasts in town.

More live music!  - With the Fox Theater, Boulder Theater, Owsley’s and more – we have it made in the shade – and this weekend you will too.  It is Dead weekend in town and all the venues will have after-shows following Dead and Company – Some shows not to be missed:

  1. Melvin Seals at Owsley’s!  You can hear the sounds of Melvin’s organ playing on the outdoor patio all day Sunday at Owsley’s Golden Road on the Hill
  2. American Babies with special guests at the Fox Theater Sunday night. Oteil is playing... Who else shows up...We’ll see!
  3. Eric Krasno and Dumpstaphunk at the Fox Theater following Saturday’s Dead and Company show – What a great way to top off the night.

Have a great weekend and be safe. Boulder is a lovely place, both because of the natural beauty and all the amenities this city has to offer. Grateful Web will be around all weekend and look forward to seeing you all soon!
