Jazz Fest Announces Voodoo Dead

The 6th Annual Nolafunk Series During Jazz Fest announces a special theme to the upcoming VooDoo Dead show at Republic NOLA on Sunday, May 7th. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s legendary show at Cornell University’s Barton Hall on May 8th, 1977, VooDoo Dead featuring Steve Kimock (The Other Ones), Jackie Greene (Phil & Friends, The Black Crowes), George Porter Jr.(The Meters), Jeff Chimenti (of Dead & Co.), and JM Kimock (Mike Gordon Band), will perform a New Orleans-influenced tribute to this universally-acclaimed, standout performance with special guests Oteil Burbridge (The Allman Brothers Band, Dead & Co.) & Papa Mali. After selling out their five night Northeast run in February, Voodoo Dead steamrolls to New Orleans with tremendous momentum.

There are a few different reasons why the Grateful Dead’s 5/8/77 show at Cornell University is widely considered a standout performance, with its serendipitous timing playing a major role. The show at Barton Hall happened just months before the release of their legendary album, Terrapin Station, so at that time a few timeless tracks like “Terrapin Station,” and “Estimated Prophet” were already introduced into heavy rotation. In 1973, founding Grateful Dead member Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKernan had passed away, so while the time proceeding his departure was special in its own right, the band took a hiatus and only played four total shows in 1975. So after taking some time off to recollect and write new music, the Grateful Dead were in true peak form come the Spring of 1977, and the band delivered from start to end at Barton Hall on May 8th.

The Nolafunk Series During Jazz Fest features a diverse collection of special performances from musicians inside and out of the New Orleans cultural sphere; however they all embrace the spirit and essence of the city. The series has preserved its tradition of unique lineup pairings, combining older and younger musicians, as well as national acts with local legends.

Under the Nolafunk moniker, Manhattan-based CEG honors the musical heroes and spirit of New Orleans in New York City year round, producing concerts in the Big Apple featuring many of the Big Easy's finest musicians, such as Dr. John & the Nite Trippers, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave, Rebirth Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins and many more. In addition, CEG amasses all-star Nola-centric lineups for both the annual Nolafunk Mardi Gras Ball and the annual Nolafunk Summer Jazzfest. CEG & Nolafunk have had a long history producing shows in New Orleans since 2007.
