NPR
"Freelance Whales' members make music that's undeniably quirky and fun. But the instrumentation isn't a gimmick: The band produces textured music with powerful rhythms and a keen sense of melody."

All Songs Considered "Freelance Whales at the Paste Magazine day party. This band has a fantastic energy, lots of charm, incredible harmonies. You'll be hearing a lot more from them this year."

BRAIDS "Native Speaker" LP Streaming Now

BRAIDS was formed by four best friends in their last year of High School in Calgary, Alberta. Convincing one another to skip university, they stayed in the garage all year and practiced obsessively, even while their fingers froze during the cold prairie winters. Then, at only 18 years old, they took the bold step of moving across the country together to Montreal, where they began crafting their self recorded/self produced debut album Native Speaker.

Oscillating between density and spaciousness, BRAIDS' sound is not easy to define. The four members construct music which is ample and rolling, perhaps alluding to the landscapes of their youth, but filled with radical texture and startling immediacy, an influence of their more recent surroundings. Delicate layering gives their experimental pop epics just enough breath to playfully explore the depth of ambient melody. Though BRAIDS dives into moments of deep obscurity and sonic experimentation, there remains embedded within the music the hypnosis of an unforgettable pop tune.

Native Speaker, is the accumulation of months of meticulous craft-work to properly capture the band's entrancing live performance. The albums' songs were tested and shaped through numerous performances and lyrical massages, resulting in work that is brilliant in detail and structure. Averaging over 6 minutes and never coming in under 4, the tracks on Native Speaker maintain a deep seeded focus.

BRAIDS has an unusually collaborative dynamic, generating all of their sweeping sounds live in a synergistic maelstrom. Even their name, BRAIDS, evokes a feeling of something continuous and progressive, yet lush and intertwining. It implies the interweaving of all four members' musical ideas, favoring collective and equal input.

On January 18, 2011 BRAIDS is putting forth their debut album Native Speaker, a reflection of coming of age for the four intricately linked musicians. It captures a period of innocence and a period of change, yet comes off as strikingly mature beyond their years. Most importantly, it displays a yearning and striving to break through, an ambitious debut for a young band just getting started.

Scattered Trees Announce Sympathy

On April 5th, Chicago’s Scattered Trees will release their full-length record, Sympathy, via Roll Call Records/EMI. In honor of the album’s release, the band is making their track "A Conversation About Death on New Years Eve" available for free download. Download the track here. The band will also be performing in Chicago on January 21 at Schubas.

For Scattered Trees, Sympathy is a labor of love that almost didn’t happen. The band grew up together in the outskirts of Chicago, playing music together in various groups over the years. They became a family in more ways than one, with some of the members sharing last names — albeit for different reasons. Scattered Trees became a staple of Chicago clubs, but as time passed, the band’s members were drawn to various parts of the country. Scattered Trees as a band looked all but over. And then, tragedy struck. Lead singer Nate Eiesland’s father passed away, and while mourning, Nate picked up his guitar again and started penning a record dedicated to his memory. Those songs became Sympathy.

The album is a focused, deeply personal collection of songs that finds Scattered Trees experimenting with lush multi-part harmonies, constructing dynamic builds, and exploring the intricacies of love and loss. Opening with “Bury the Floors,” Nate sings “It’s the house that I built you to fall / We started to walk then we stood up to crawl / So bury the floors and burn down the walls / to find ourselves by morning.” Driving rock epics like “Four Days Straight” rub shoulders with melancholic elegies like “Where You Came From.” The album’s title track starts with a stripped-down plaintive mandolin, ultimately fading into a slow-burning orchestral groove. Melting into “Five Minutes,” Scattered Trees continues the build until the track bursts forth. The band rounds out the record with the mournful acoustic closer “On Your Side,” a fitting tribute for a deeply heartfelt and therapeutic album.

The Builders & The Butchers: 'Lullaby' Song Premiere

Today The Builders and the Butchers premiered "Lullaby," the first song off their upcoming third album Dead Reckoning, on My Old Kentucky Blog. The urgent, ominous track can now be heard and downloaded here. Dead Reckoning will be released February 22nd, 2011 on Badman Recording Co.

The Builders will also head out on tour in support of friends Murder By Death early next month. The month-long string of dates begins February 1st at Cosmic Charlie's in Lexington, KY, and wraps up February 20th at The Waiting Room in Omaha, NE, and includes a hometown album release show February 15th at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR.

Dead Reckoning is a bold and dynamic set of 12 tracks, a raucous musical blend that culls from folk, back porch bluegrass, and unplugged blues. Led by Ryan Sollee's fervent vocals and the big drum sound of the deconstructed kit split between Brandon Hafer and Ray Rude, the album ranges from pounding anti-anthems to more subdued, haunting tracks to gospel-tinged laments. Sollee, writing against the backdrop of the recent downturn, found himself relating to and drawing inspiration from American music of the 1930s. The timeless songs on Dead Reckoning follow suit, weaving gothic stories with common threads like absolute good and evil, addiction, religion, and the father and the son. The album was recorded predominantly live over eight days in Portland with the help of Adam Selzer (The Decemberists, M. Ward, She & Him) and engineer Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek, Starfucker, Thao Nguyen), in effort to finally capture the unbridled energy of The Builders' renowned live show.

Sharon Van Etten Announces Spring Headlining Tour

Sharon Van Etten wrapped up 2010 with a bow by appearing on more best-of and year-end lists than we could count, including those from SPIN, NPR’s All Song’s Considered, LA Times, Filter, Stereogum, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and so many more. And while the world was singing her praises, Sharon was just starting to record more intimately heart-wrenching songs in the Brooklyn garage-turned-studio of The National’s Aaron Dessner.

After touring relentlessly in the 2nd half of 2010, and ending the year on such a strong note, you’d think Sharon would give herself a little break, but nope, not our Sharon. She’s just keeping at it! She’s just confirmed her first headlining tour, playing select dates across the country in March and April, including SXSW, and she’s beginning the year straight off the bat with a sold-out hometown show at the Bowery Ballroom. After a few shows in the U.S. this month, she’ll travel to Europe and tour with The National, come home and give herself a nice week off, and then hit the road again! This week also finds Sharon as the iTunes Discovery Download. Do yourself a favor in 2011 and make plans now to check out a singer-songwriter who The Wall Street Journal has called “a major talent in bloom”…

Callers Announce US Tour / Premiere "Life Of Love"

Ryan and Sara met Don at a show at Melvin's, a bar on St. Claude in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans. Ryan and Sara had just begun writing and recording songs together on an old 4-track with a mic hanging from the blade of a ceiling fan in the middle of that stifling sweaty summer, but they would soon part ways and leave New Orleans. Over the next couple of years they relocated to Providence together and later settled in Brooklyn where Don had also settled after Katrina.
Life of Love is the first collection of songs Callers wrote and recorded exclusively in New York as a three- piece. Naturally the band's sound grew in volume in response to the volume of the city; however, they held on to what makes them so consistently affecting: their raw spartan style, anchored by Sara's sensually tough vocals, and Ryan and Don's Southern-honed chops as multi-instrumentalists.
The album started with the band's cover of Wire's "Heartbeat", and the idea of creating something simple and cathartic. Using borrowed amps and mics, in bedrooms and in studios, and by the grace of their good friends, Callers recorded Life of Love in intense spurts over the course of a year. Unlike the experimental ballads on their debut Fortune, the new songs pulse with gritty urgency, colored by the sounds of damaged gear and the earnest spirit of a middle-school gospel choir. The result is an album stripped to the core, an expression of the inexpressible space between us and the places we inhabit and the people we share those places with.

Prussia Announce East Coast Tour Dates

Prussia's music is energetic, poppy- and melodious.  You feel like dancing, though there’s no way in hell you would describe this as dance music. Waltzes, African drum beats, acapella breakdowns, and the gentle ringing of sleigh bells all fit into their unique arrangements naturally.
The band formed on the first day of 2007, practicing in the A. C. Rich, a DIY venue in Pontiac, Michigan.  Prussia later became connected with the legendary Scrummage University, a DIY space in Detroit that is interconnected with other underground venues across the country.
Fiery Furnaces, Quasi, Dr. Dog, Black Heart Procession, Thunderbirds are now, Islands, Beach House, tUnE-YaRdS, and Dent May are among the many well-known bands that Prussia has played with. The band are currently finishing their highly-anticipated new full-length album, Poor English.  Swaggering drum loops, intricate guitar compositions, and buttery vocal harmonies all support the sweet nasal crooning of singer Ryan Spencer on the new album.  Stories of suicide, misogyny, sexual vacancy, and the crippling ennui of illusory love all weave in and out of catchy pop songs.  Lyrically, it’s T.S. Eliot’s drunken scribbling on a bathroom wall.
While mixing Poor English, the band also created Prussia Goes to the Disco, a mixtape of all new electronic Prussia songs.  The simultaneous creation of two aesthetically different, but highly listenable releases proves that this is an unpredictable band that is going to do exactly what they want to do and that this is definitely for the best.

Prussia will be releasing a new EP, Four For Attention, on January 11, 2011.

Jim Bianco Set to Release 'Loudmouth'

Critically acclaimed indie musician, singer, songwriter and producer Jim Bianco announces the release of his third LP Loudmouth on April 5. Funded entirely from his fiercly loyal fan base, Loudmouth is a return to form as Jim Bianco goes at it again: speaking to the sinner and the heartbroken in all of us, sifting through the filth and wreckage in his crooked heart and putting it to music in a way that makes women want to simultaneously sleep with him and slap him in the face; and men want to pick a fight and sing along.
And so Jim Bianco goes at it again; exposing, embarrassing and offending ex-girlfriends, future girlfriends, fellow singer/songwriters and, most notably, himself. Speaking to the sinner and the heartbroken in all of us, Jim Bianco has sifted through the filth and wreckage in his crooked heart and put it to music in his new record, Loudmouth. And as always, he’s done it in a way that makes women want to simultaneously sleep with him and slap him in the face; and men want to pick a fight and sing along.
The songs on Loudmouth explore the reckless depths of a touring musician, the devastation of a broken heart, the irony of being in love with someone who treats you like shit and the whimsical inclinations of a temporary secretary who dreams of being an elevator operator.
“There is humor on this record, but there is a darkness that comes along with it. You’ll get an occasional laugh, but it won’t be free. And there is no love song. There are songs of lust, songs of loss and songs of longing, but no love song.”  Bianco, who has always been a fiercely independent artist, funded the record entirely through his fans.“With the decline in funding for the arts that we’ve seen over the past few years, and the fact that music is so accessible that it’s essentially free, I’m thankful that I can put out an album and tour independently with only the support of my fans. I’m grateful that, as an artist who has a direct relationship with his fan base, I can continue making the music that I like for the people who want it – all without a middle-man to muck up the process.”
Bianco’s fans are also grateful for the direct line they have to him.  But it’s not only about the music.  There’s a sensibility that Bianco radiates in all his art. “I began blogging from the road just to pass the time.  There’s something redemptive about having people read about my follies and laugh and cry along with me.”  Bianco’s writing has received such a positive response from fans that he is in the process of publishing a book of short stories, which he plans to sell on tour in 2011. As if that weren’t enough, Bianco has recently taken to writing, acting, directing and editing his own silent films, which have garnered not only the attention of his fans, but of cinephiles, including Lorenzo DeStefano, the head of the Ventura Film Society. "Jim Bianco's new silent films embrace and expand on a lost era of filmmaking...they illuminate the human spirit in a way that is honest, charming and at times quite profound."
But at heart, Bianco is a performer. And he’s no stranger to the stage, having toured with the likes of Squeeze, Shelby Lynn, Imogen Heap, Joshua Radin, Josh Ritter and Loudon Wainwright III, to name a few. He’s been part of the legendary Hotel Café tour since it’s inception. His live show can take you on a voyage through the weightlessness of falling in love, or into the dark, dirty depths of the red light district of your imagination. With a firecracker’s presence on-stage, vocal chords that crack the plaster, and an occasional burlesque dancer, it is truly a wonder to watch him command a room.  Over the years, Jim’s music has been featured in a wide array of formats from key placements on in films and high profile TV shows including True Blood, performances on late night’s Craig Ferguson and NPR’s Mountain Stage.
With Loudmouth, Bianco feels that his live show will be catapulted to a new level. “These songs demand more of me because of their candor,” says Bianco.  “ They require all the tricks of my past performances – the intensity, the burlesque, the gitter; but also a resounding honesty that I’ve realized is fundamental in all worthwhile performances.”
Loudmouth captures the playful wit and spirit that has always defined Bianco, but is a marked departure from his earlier works. There’s plenty of mischief on the record, but there’s a certain maturity too. Not the kind of maturity that involves mortgages or afternoon naps; but the kind that is required to create something timeless.
With Loudmouth, it’s as if Bianco has transformed himself from the juggling clown of the circus into to it’s ringleader. But make no mistake - he’s still in the circus.  And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
