Orenda Fink: New Album Ask The Night Out Now

Orenda Fink's sophomore solo album Ask The Night arrived in stores on Tuesday. Following her heralded 2005 release Invisible Ones, the new album is an homage to her Southern roots and inspired by traditional American folk music and Southern Gothic literature. The album has been striking a chord with the press; the blog Captain's Dead remarked, "Orenda Fink's Ask The Night...plain and simple is a beautiful and haunting record and definitely one of my favorite sounding records of the year...Highly recommended!"

Yesterday, PasteMagazine.com premiered new album track "That Certain-Something Spring" here. A full album stream is also currently available on AOL Music's Spinner blog.  Prefix premiered her first single "High Ground" (featuring Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse) on August 25th; KCRW also named the song their 'Top Tune' on September 2nd.

Orenda will travel to New York City for the CMJ Music Marathon later this month to perform at an Oct. 21st day party presented by Rachael Ray's Feedback, The Syndicate, and Amnesty International, as well as the Saddle Creek showcase on Oct. 22nd.

DeVotchKa Halloween Shows @ Boulder Theater

DeVotchKa Management announces a pair of Halloween shows at the Boulder Theatre on October 30 and 31, 2009, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Metro Denver Promotion of Letters, a nonprofit writing-tutoring organization. The organization was inspired by the 826 centers in San Francisco and New York that were started by author Dave Eggers.

devotchka“I’ve been friends with Dave Eggers for a long time,” says Rob Thomas, manager for DeVotchKa. “This is a great, local organization carrying on the good work that he does, and we are happy to support it.”

The band is also supporting Eggers’ own 826NYC by contributing a track to Songs From The Point! This yet-to-be-released compilation features interpretations of Harry Nilsson’s cult-classic The Point! All proceeds from the album benefit 826NYC. The album is on Amano Recordings with a slated release date for October 27, 2009, and also features Andrew Bird, Nada Surf, Martha Wainwright, and The Wheel.

Inspired by multiple tours of the Spanish countryside, DeVotchKa discovered the magic of the Matador.  Like all Souls Day of the past, DeVotchKa's music will transpire you into an unworldly passionate evening of swirling sensuous rhythms, beautiful trapeze artists and ornate bulls that may run amok!

Join DeVotchKa in a toast to our Spanish ancestors on these nights when the veil between life and death is at it's thinnest....  Complete with bull motifs and intricate costumes worthy of the iconic and aristocratic imagery of the bullfighter. Joining DeVotchKa will be Quixotic Performance Fusion, the wonderful and collaborative ensemble of musicians, dancers, aerialists, composers, designers, and choreographers that joined them in February for the beautiful Valentine’s Eve show at the Paramount Theatre. This will be Quixotic first performance in Boulder.

DeVotchKa enjoyed a great summer tour with David Byrne, which included a performance at Red Rocks in June. They also played several U.S. and Canadian Festivals in July—Mile High, High Sierra, Ottawa Bluesfest, and Montreal Jazzfest. Currently, DeVotchka are in Europe for the month of August, performing at festivals in Portugal, Scotland, Belgium, London, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, and Switzerland.

Tickets for the Halloween performance go on sale Saturday, August 8, 2009, at 10am (internet), 12pm (box office/phone).  Tickets are for sale from the band website www.devotchka.net or directly from Boulder Theater website  www.bouldertheater.com.

Black Moth Super Rainbow's 'Eating Us' Streets May 26th

Eating Us- for the Grateful Web

After a year of eerie, stilted silence, the sun shines and the shadows reappear. Black Moth Super Rainbow has crept from the forests and cities to make Eating Us, their dark bubblegum freakout for 2009.  The first fully hi-fi BMSR record, Eating Us, adds space and dimension to the band's sticky, off-kilter melodies. This isn't an album about witches and woods, and this time around the band isn't letting on to what it all might mean. Because to them, it's just better that way.

The modern musical unit known as Black Moth Super Rainbow first emerged from an obscure Pennsylvania forest glen in 2003 to relay a somewhat confounding sound with Falling Through a Field. Over the next few years, that peculiar sound developed, and the cult of BMSR began. With the release of their naturally-sweetened, candy-coated, and acclaimed 2007 treat, Dandelion Gum, a number of curious listeners bent their ears and adjusted their listening habits to incorporate Black Moth Super Rainbow's oddly creepy and off-beat sweet audio plyings. With support slots opening for Flaming Lips and Aesop Rock, the oft-camera shy outfit was soon positioned in front of thousands of brand new sonically adventurous music enthusiasts who weren't necessarily prepared for the eccentric visuals of BMSR's surreal live show, but would hopefully emerge changed, and be better off for it.

Their new full length presentation for 2009, Eating Us, promises to up the ante on the fidelity and melodies that BMSR have become known for. Here, the merry cryptic band has added some new flavors to their already well-established rainbow of sounds, with even more dense layers of lushly complex orchestration, intensely rhythmic drumming from a live, human drummer, vocoder vocals that are anything but robotic, and thick, undulating bass tones. Recorded at Tarbox Road Studios, Eating Us marks the first time BMSR has ventured into a modern recording studio. Production and partial tracking were handled by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Weezer) whose hands and ears were the only ones trusted to keep the freaked out wiggles and hairy candies fully in-tact, while also expanding them in a more realistic space.

Now a six piece, BMSR could come or go at any time, however 2009 promises a return to touring.

Eating Us will be released May 26, 2009 on Graveface. The full deluxe CD version features a 16 page art booklet and hairy summer jewel case jacket.

Alaska in Winter's sophomore release 'Holiday'

Alaska in Winter- for the Grateful Web

Alaska In Winter began when art student, Brandon Bethancourt spent a semester writing and recording music in an isolated cabin on the south coast of Alaska. Upon arrival back in New Mexico, he teamed up with Zach Condon of Beirut, Heather Trost of A Hawk And A Hacksaw and other friends, and thus began work on the album Dance Party In The Balkans. This debut release was released by Milan Records in July 2007 in the US after a release in the UK by Regular Beat a few months earlier.

After his critically acclaimed debut release, Bethancourt decided to quit his job, move out of his house and relocate to Berlin, Germany – a city he had been to before and had always dreamed of living in.  He has spent the past 6 months writing and recording this upcoming release Holiday and begins his tour of Europe in late September.  Holiday will be released on Milan Records on November 18, 2008.

Bethancourt takes much of his influence from his early years of growing up in the American South West, immersed in the musical low-rider culture of Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as a slight Arabian influence on the part of his parents and their Byzantine church music. He combines these traditional sounds with programmed beats and use of the vocoder among other new technologies and techniques.

Because Bethancourt is the sole member of Alaska in Winter and does not read or write music, he uses multi-track recording to build his musical layers, using a variety of techniques.  "For Holiday, I recorded everything in my living room on a laptop and an old micro cassette tape recorder and used a German ghetto blaster as my monitor speakers. The only things I brought with me to Europe were my Powerbook laptop, an effects processor, a small midi keyboard, a microphone, and the hand held micro cassette tape recorder," he explains.  "Because I didn't actually have any instruments with me (aside from the elements I recorded before I came to Europe), the album turned out very electronic, very synthy as those were the only tools I had."

In comparing how Holiday differs from Dance Party in the Balkans, Bethancourt explains, "I've definitely been influenced by Berlin on this album - much more electronic than the last, heavily based on synths, bass, and dancier drums and with hints of minimal house elements creeping in ever so slightly. Even within the album itself I can hear a progression of the Berlin electronic music scene influencing me more and more with the amount of time I spent here.  The Berlin techno parties and all night dance marathons were big inspirations for me."

Pete Francis & Barefoot Truth Join Forces for 2009 Tour Dates

photos courtesy of Tsumani Publicity- for the Grateful Web

Singer/songwriter Pete Francis is kicking off 2009 with a full slate of late winter and early spring dates throughout the Northeast and Midwest. Blending an energetic and uplifting live experience with sincere and heartfelt songwriting, Francis has showcased his signature style in sold out auditoriums and intimate clubs across the country. For this tour, Francis has joined forces with up-and-coming New England based roots rock outfit Barefoot Truth. With both artists jamming collectively as one band on Pete Francis, Dispatch, and Barefoot Truth material, the shows will offer surprising twists and unique takes on each artist's compositions.

Staying true to his indie roots, the former Dispatch songwriter blends sonic elements of folk, jam, rock and pop with visual elements of art and poetry. Francis pushes the boundaries of creativity, composing inspiring lyrical lines and melodies over layers of strings, brass, keys and rhythms, while the multi-instrumented Barefoot Truth delivers organic, feel-good compositions and feverish live performances. Still in their early twenties, Barefoot Truth has emerged as one of the fastest growing bands on the east coast. They spent the fall touring behind their election-themed single All Good Reasons and were asked to play the Obama campaign official pre-debate rally in New York; it's not often a band of 20-somethings without a label perform on a main stage sandwiched between sets by Bruce Hornsby and Crosby & Nash.

Part singer-songwriter, part foot-stomping backbeat, and part old-time rock and roll, the Pete Francis/Barefoot Truth collaboration is one that has been in the works for quite some time. Francis produced Barefoot Truth's 2006 release The Clubhouse Sessions with longtime Dispatch producer Jack Gauthier, and has joined the band on stage at multiple performances over the last 18 months. Francis, Barefoot Truth and Gauthier will team up again this winter for another EP set for release alongside the tour.

The tour will begin with a show on February 19th at The Station in Portland, ME, followed by a run winding through all parts of the northeast with stops in MA, VT, NH, NY, NJ, PA, MD and VA. The tour will conclude in April with two Illinois shows, including a stop at the famous Beat Kitchen in Chicago.

Miniature Tigers Warm Stages For Ben Folds

Minature Tigers- for the Grateful Web

Miniature Tigers' sound was forged in the bedroom of frontman Charlie Brand, only to quickly outgrow the space, with the band soon finding itself on stage, in the studio and signed to Phoenix's Modern Art Records in short order. Brand's lyrics – a mix of deeply personal insights and playful references to the disparate cultural artifacts that have informed his existence – and effortlessly constructed indie-pop arrangements have made fans in his native Phoenix and beyond. They stretch to Los Angeles, where he reconnected with drummer, collaborator and fellow charter member of the band Rick Schaier while living in Hollywood, and far beyond thanks to the Internet, which it seems people are into these days.

Miniature Tigers' debut album "Tell it to the Volcano" runs the lyrical gamut, taking inspiration from and referencing TV's Lost (which rates a Dharma Initiative sticker on Brand's acoustic) as easily as it probes the joy and heartbreak of Charlie's own life, while managing not to take itself too seriously. Brand wrote the album while on the lam – not from the law, but rather from a relationship he described as "brutal." He left Phoenix to clear his head, landing in Los Angeles and collaborating with his friend Rick to complete the long-gestating album. It was his catharsis – with cannibals and volcanoes stepping in for the real-world problems that had both beset and inspired him. In the end the album represents Charlie's effort to codify, examine, and ultimately move past a 2-year stretch of his life.

Charlie and Rick are joined in their live incarnation by friends and collaborators Lou Kummerer on bass and Lawrence Hearn on lead guitar and keyboards, for performances that seem to give equal time to playing songs and intra-band joking. They aim for a controlled chaos aesthetic that eschews "auto-pilot" at all costs.

In an effort to further confound the expectations of those around the band, they chose to have their video directed by someone who had never helmed one before…or at least never an authorized music video. The band tapped "Yacht Rock" creator JD Ryznar to direct their video for Cannibal Queen in the hopes he would recreate the magic of his wildly popular Internet video series. Ryznar quickly assimilated the band's aesthetic and turned in a video equal parts "Weird Science" and "Frankenstein," to the band's delight.

"Tell it to the Volcano" is currently available on iTunes, as well as a limited-edition letter pressed CD package and on vinyl at shows and via the band's web site. They'll be touring through the winter of 2009, when the album will find its way to stores through an official retail release.
