Teddy Charles All Stars 'Word From Bird' at The Iridium

Teddy Charles- for the Grateful Web

Teddy Charles is considered to be one of the great jazz vibraphonists and composers of all time, playing with such jazz legends as Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. As a student at Julliard in the mid 40s, he haunted New York's jazz clubs, occasionally sitting in with the bands on vibes or piano. His break came unexpectedly one night when he was asked to sit in on piano with Coleman Hawkin's band for the overdue Thelonious Monk. Soon after, Charles began to appear regularly with the top jazz groups of the day, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Buddy De Franco, playing alongside and writing for such jazz stars as Coltrane, Parker, Max Roach and Miles Davis. Recently appeared with Max Roach, David Amram, Lee Konitz. In the early 1950s he began leading his own groups, composing, producing and recording original works such as No More Nights, Blues Become Elektra and Word from Bird.

Lotus' most recent album, Hammerstrike (released in October 2008),  finds the band reaching back in order to move forward.  Primarily recorded live in one room to analog tape by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man), the album captures a sound that harkens back to the 70's but never slips into nostalgic retreads.  The compositions are focused and melodic, filled out with orchestration including swelling violins and cellos, banjo, wordless choirs, and electronic noises.  Though the tracks range from dance floor ready rockers to soaring post-rock instrumentals, the album is held together by a sanguine spirit pervading each track.  The big guitars, feedback, and distortion serve an optimistic purpose.  It is a decidedly American feel that invokes big skies, open roads, and a zealous yet naïve pursuit of the idea that defeat will never be conceded.

Lotus formed at a Mennonite college that had banned on-campus dancing as late as the 1980's, and has been creatively fusing electronic dance music with instrumental post-rock for the past eight years. Armed with a massive light rig and one of the most energetic shows on the circuit, Lotus was a go-to act for late night festival slots this past summer, performing at ROTHBURY, Summerfest, Camp Bisco, and others. Also in 2008, Lotus saw advance sellouts in venues throughout the U.S. including Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh, two nights at World Café Live in Philadelphia, two nights at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Higher Ground in Burlington, and Kinetic Playground in Chicago. The band's remix album, Copy Paste Repeat: Lotus Remixed was released in spring of 08 to critical acclaim.

Alaska in Winter's sophomore release 'Holiday'

Alaska in Winter- for the Grateful Web

Alaska In Winter began when art student, Brandon Bethancourt spent a semester writing and recording music in an isolated cabin on the south coast of Alaska. Upon arrival back in New Mexico, he teamed up with Zach Condon of Beirut, Heather Trost of A Hawk And A Hacksaw and other friends, and thus began work on the album Dance Party In The Balkans. This debut release was released by Milan Records in July 2007 in the US after a release in the UK by Regular Beat a few months earlier.

After his critically acclaimed debut release, Bethancourt decided to quit his job, move out of his house and relocate to Berlin, Germany – a city he had been to before and had always dreamed of living in.  He has spent the past 6 months writing and recording this upcoming release Holiday and begins his tour of Europe in late September.  Holiday will be released on Milan Records on November 18, 2008.

Bethancourt takes much of his influence from his early years of growing up in the American South West, immersed in the musical low-rider culture of Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as a slight Arabian influence on the part of his parents and their Byzantine church music. He combines these traditional sounds with programmed beats and use of the vocoder among other new technologies and techniques.

Because Bethancourt is the sole member of Alaska in Winter and does not read or write music, he uses multi-track recording to build his musical layers, using a variety of techniques.  "For Holiday, I recorded everything in my living room on a laptop and an old micro cassette tape recorder and used a German ghetto blaster as my monitor speakers. The only things I brought with me to Europe were my Powerbook laptop, an effects processor, a small midi keyboard, a microphone, and the hand held micro cassette tape recorder," he explains.  "Because I didn't actually have any instruments with me (aside from the elements I recorded before I came to Europe), the album turned out very electronic, very synthy as those were the only tools I had."

In comparing how Holiday differs from Dance Party in the Balkans, Bethancourt explains, "I've definitely been influenced by Berlin on this album - much more electronic than the last, heavily based on synths, bass, and dancier drums and with hints of minimal house elements creeping in ever so slightly. Even within the album itself I can hear a progression of the Berlin electronic music scene influencing me more and more with the amount of time I spent here.  The Berlin techno parties and all night dance marathons were big inspirations for me."

Announcing the Donna Jean Godchaux Band w/ Jeff Matson

Donna Jean- for the Grateful Web

A band, like every living thing, needs to evolve. Donna Jean Godchaux and Jeff Mattson are pleased to announce that "Donna Jean and the Tricksters" has morphed into the – see above!

Donna Jean Godchaux – lead vocals

Jeff Mattson – lead guitar, vocals

David MacKay – bass, vocals

Clint Bailey – keyboards, vocals

Joe Chirco – drums

Rock and roll and lots more, delivered with Muscle Shoals-trained soul and inspiration. Fine original material plus a nod to Donna Jean's deep roots with lots of Grateful Dead songs, too.

All things pass, but the seeds that were silent burst into bloom. Look out – this flower will thrive.

The band will be stepping out in April with a full tour, and will be widely seen on the summer festival circuit.

Bios:

Donna Jean Godchaux

Born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Donna Jean was a vocalist at both Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and Fame Studios, home of the legendary "Muscle Shoals Sound," on records like Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds," Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," and Boz Scagg's eponymous first solo album. She moved to San Francisco, married Keith Godchaux, and spent the 1970s as a vocalist in the Grateful Dead as well as the Jerry Garcia Band. After life with the Dead, she and Keith created the Heart of Gold Band with drummer Greg Anton and guitarist Steve Kimock.

Following various side trips, she resumed serious focus on her singing in the '90s, recording a new Heart of Gold Band album, At the Table, and singing with Phil & Friends and her own Donna Jean Band.

Jeff Mattson

Jeff came to prominence as the lead guitarist, primary vocalist, and leader of Long Island's legendary Grateful Dead-influenced jam band, the Zen Tricksters. Over the course of thirty years, his supple, elegant playing reflected a fusion of rock, blues, bluegrass, country, jazz and folk stylings, along with a healthy dose of psychedelia. His songwriting credits include the exquisitely mournful "Shelter" (co-written with Donna Jean), as well as "Travelin' Light," (co-written with Melissa Marston), "He Said/She Said," (with Donna Jean), and "A Prisoner Says His Piece," all for Donna Jean and the Tricksters. He also contributed "Leave Me Out of This" to Phil Lesh and Friends' There and Back Again. He played with Phil Lesh and Friends in 1999.

David MacKay

David hails from Marin County, California. As part of the emerging Bay Area music scene of the 70's, he was a founding member of the popular band the "Tasmanian Devils" and recorded and toured with Michael Nesmith, playing bass on the first Grammy-winning video, "Elephant Parts." He was a member of both the original and reformed "Heart of Gold Band." Most recently, he has played bass with the Muscle Shoals-based group "The Fiddleworms."

Clint Bailey

Is a native of Huntsville, Alabama, and a well-respected member of the Muscle Shoals music scene and the band the Fiddleworms.  He has played on occasion with "Donna Jean the Tricksters" and with Jason Isbell (Drive By Truckers).  He began on piano at the age of 15, and then found the Hammond B-3 and became permanently hooked.  He is a strong songwriter, touching the Southern wellsprings of rock, soul, gospel, blues, and New Orleans styles, and contributed the title track to the Fiddleworms' Volkswagen Catfish.

ABOVE & BEYOND ANNOUNCE U.S. TOUR DATES

Above & Beyond- for the Grateful Web

This February, ABOVE & BEYOND—who are Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Slijamaki—will return to the U.S. for a club tour in support of their compilation album Anjunadeep:01.  Set for release via ULTRA Records on February 16, the double-disc set encompasses a variety of tracks from their respected Anjunadeep imprint.

On this tour, where they will be joined by support act Jaytech,  ABOVE & BEYOND will showcase the Anjunadeep sound in the early part of their sets and before progressing to the quality melodic trance sound for which they are best known.  In a short space of time, Anjunadeep has grown from being a promising sibling to the Anjunabeats label, to a dynamic and influential imprint in its own right, pioneering a sound somewhere between house and trance.  The tour kicks off February 12 in Atlanta and will take the trio throughout many key markets in the U.S. including Houston, Denver, New York, Washington D.C. and Las Vegas, as well as into Canada with stops in Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton.

Winning fans such as James Zabiela, Desyn Masiello, Eric Prydz and Laurent Garnier along the way, Anjunadeep received a nomination for "Best Record Label" at DJ Magazine's Best of British Awards 2008. ABOVE & BEYOND's Tony McGuinness said: "The road between house and trance used to be a dusty, barren path, visited by only the truly brave, but in the last few years it has become an exciting, bustling place with constant traffic going both ways. Anjunadeep is that lovely, shiny building on the left with all the people looking in the window."

The label's debut compilation features Anjunadeep stalwarts Jaytech, Michael Cassette (aka Komytea), Interplay, Joonas Hahmo and recent high profile addition 16 Bit Lolitas.  They are joined by newer faces like Colombia's Liluca, Russia's Proff and Canadian Paul Keeley, as ABOVE & BEYOND conjure up two CD's of spirited melodic house music. A special treat comes in the form of ABOVE & BEYOND's own remix of Radiohead's "Reckoner" officially licensed via XL Recordings for the physical format only.

HAMPTONITE! w/ EOTO, Pretty Lights, Boombox & More!

EOTO - photo by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

This March marks the return of Phish and their first shows (Hampton Coliseum, Hampton VA- March 6th, 7th, 8th) in almost five years.  With their return brings much cause to celebrate, and Glitterglu Productions is more than happy to serve up a tasty dessert to this musical main course with two Phish after-show parties at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Hampton, VA, only 3.5 miles from the Hampton Coliseum, Friday March 6th and Saturday March 7th.  The dance infused music line up features a who's who of the live electronica scene, including EOTO, BoomBox, Pretty Lights, J.Wail, Freepeoples Frequency (featuring members of SeepeopleS) and Sci Fi.  Although billed as an after-show for the main event, doors open at 9pm both nights and the shows will start soon thereafter for the many Phish fans who make the migration to Hampton, VA and aren't fortunate enough to score tickets

Glitterglu Productions has truly cooked up an eclectic mix of live electronic improv and beat oriented dance acts to keep bodies shaking until 5 am. Headlining the first night are jam-scene veterans EOTO.  Consisting of one third of the progressive sextet, The String Cheese Incident, EOTO is a joint venture between former SCI members Jason Hann and Michael Travis.  The duo is an entirely improvisational collaboration of live instrumentation and digital mixing. They have eagerly taken to the road to deliver a totally inimitable and unforgettable live experience.Performing in roles completely different than the ones in SCI, Jason Hann and Michael Travis keep the crowds moving.  With the raw power of live drums, the music is all created on the spot, recorded, and remixed live, proving no two shows are exactly alike. While completely different from SCI, life-long SCI fans will be drawn to the dance frenzy and originality that is EOTO

The line up for Friday also includes national touring sensation J.Wail who creates his own style of "live-club-funk" through innovative techniques using guitar, bass, vocals, synthesizers and live electronics.  With 450 + shows in the last three years J.Wail has proved himself one of the top up and coming acts on the scene.  Also on the line-up is Wilminton, NC's favorite party band Sci Fi, who recently released their self-titled debut album to much critical acclaim.  Following the after-show in Hampton, Glitterglu Productions is also proud to announce the EOTO Florida Spring Break Tour (March 9-14) consisting of shows in Islamorada (3/9), Key West (3/10), Miami (3/11), Marathon (3/12), Delray Beach (3/13), West Palm Beach (3/14), and Gainesville (3/15).  More Details are provided below and can also be found online

Co-headlining the second night of late night Phish extravaganzas is the wildly popular dance rock duo, Boombox and the Colorado based break-beat duo, Pretty LightsBoomBox is producer/DJ Russ Randolph and singer/songwriter/guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux. This pair of dynamic artists uses their rich musical history and their vision of music and popular culture to deliver a style of music distinctly different from anything heard or seen in music today. This signature sound and show brings live music to a new, elevated level. Pretty Lights is the musical vision of the ultra-versatile Colorado based producer Derek Vincent Smith, accompanied in the live setting by drummer, Cory Eberhard.  Together these two achieve a raw energy rarely reached in the realm of electronic music. At a time when music lovers from almost all subcultures and genres are finding common ground in the basic form of bangin' beats, Pretty Lights is giving the people what they want; electro organic cutting-edge party rocking beats that fill venues with energy and emotion and send dance floors into frenzies.  Derek's latest album, Filling Up The City Skies, is a two disc, 26 track journey through past, present, and future. The album has been downloaded over 30,000 times from the Pretty Lights website in the short three months since its release, proving that the PL sound is not only getting around, it's spreading like a virus.

Rounding out the line up on Saturday night are performances from J.Wail and Freepeoples Frequency (FFQ).  FFQ consists of SeepeopleS frontman Will Bradford and SeepeopleS sound engineer Brooke BinionFFQ recently opened shows for Lotus and Boombox and are relentless in their attempt to revive big-beat electronic music, with their own unique flavor, of course. In addition to an already packed musical line-up, DJ Ginza of Elemental Harmonics will be doing special late night sets on both nights with an array of very speical guests.  All in all, Glitterglu Productions has drawn up a recipe for a fantastic dessert to the dinner that is the return of Phish.  For more information on these events and ticket sales, click here.

Joey DeFrancesco w/ special guest Larry Coryell @ the Iridium

Joey DeFrancesco- for the Grateful Web

Joey DeFrancesco has come a long way from his recording debut as a leader made in 1989 as a fresh-faced 17-year-old. From the get-go, the Philadelphia native established his credentials with virtuoso technique and an innate soulfulness that he brought to bear on the hulking Hammond B-3 organ which belied his young age but spoke of his deep Philly roots under the tutelage of his father, Papa John DeFrancesco, a B-3 burner in his own right. Through the 90s, DeFrancesco was widely recognized as spearheading a renewed interested in the Hammond organ, an instrument that had fallen out of favor among musicians and the public since its golden period during the 60s and 70s.

Very special guest Larry Coryell will be appearing Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

LARRY CORYELL is one of the world's acknowledged guitar masters. He has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and 'featured accompanist'. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of "the guitar gods" in the late 1970s and as a "truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing", he has also been christened as "a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion" by the New York Times, and dubbed "the Godfather of Fusion" by Dan Ouellette of Down Beat Magazine.

Pete Francis & Barefoot Truth Join Forces for 2009 Tour Dates

photos courtesy of Tsumani Publicity- for the Grateful Web

Singer/songwriter Pete Francis is kicking off 2009 with a full slate of late winter and early spring dates throughout the Northeast and Midwest. Blending an energetic and uplifting live experience with sincere and heartfelt songwriting, Francis has showcased his signature style in sold out auditoriums and intimate clubs across the country. For this tour, Francis has joined forces with up-and-coming New England based roots rock outfit Barefoot Truth. With both artists jamming collectively as one band on Pete Francis, Dispatch, and Barefoot Truth material, the shows will offer surprising twists and unique takes on each artist's compositions.

Staying true to his indie roots, the former Dispatch songwriter blends sonic elements of folk, jam, rock and pop with visual elements of art and poetry. Francis pushes the boundaries of creativity, composing inspiring lyrical lines and melodies over layers of strings, brass, keys and rhythms, while the multi-instrumented Barefoot Truth delivers organic, feel-good compositions and feverish live performances. Still in their early twenties, Barefoot Truth has emerged as one of the fastest growing bands on the east coast. They spent the fall touring behind their election-themed single All Good Reasons and were asked to play the Obama campaign official pre-debate rally in New York; it's not often a band of 20-somethings without a label perform on a main stage sandwiched between sets by Bruce Hornsby and Crosby & Nash.

Part singer-songwriter, part foot-stomping backbeat, and part old-time rock and roll, the Pete Francis/Barefoot Truth collaboration is one that has been in the works for quite some time. Francis produced Barefoot Truth's 2006 release The Clubhouse Sessions with longtime Dispatch producer Jack Gauthier, and has joined the band on stage at multiple performances over the last 18 months. Francis, Barefoot Truth and Gauthier will team up again this winter for another EP set for release alongside the tour.

The tour will begin with a show on February 19th at The Station in Portland, ME, followed by a run winding through all parts of the northeast with stops in MA, VT, NH, NY, NJ, PA, MD and VA. The tour will conclude in April with two Illinois shows, including a stop at the famous Beat Kitchen in Chicago.
