Yoko Ono's Remix of 'Give Peace a Chance'

Yoko Ono- for the Grateful Web

Following the milestone success of her two consecutive #1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart singles "NO, NO, NO" (THE REMIXES) and "GIVE PEACE A CHANCE" (THE REMIXES), seminal pop culture icon YOKO ONO closes 2008 as Billboard's #4 Hot Dance Club Play Artist of the Year. Her chart-topping remix singles (both issued on MINDTRAIN/TWISTED Records) seized the #4 ("No, No, No") and #20 ("Give Peace A Chance") spot, respectively, on Billboard's 2008 Year End Top 50 Hot Dance Club Play Tracks.

With another successful year under her belt, ONO kicks off 2009 with the long-awaited digital release of "GIVE PEACE A CHANCE" (THE INTERNATIONAL REMIXES) - the final installment of the avant-garde visionary's series of three digital-only, environmentally-friendly "green" remix singles.  Available February 18th on MINDTRAIN/TWISTED Records (Yoko's birthday!), the potent set includes electrifying reworks of the landmark world peace anthem which has been re-recorded by the tireless humanitarian as an uplifting poetic narrative resonating with a sense of urgency and optimism.

Speaking to today's worldwide tumultuous political, social and environmental climate, ONO transforms the timeless rallying cry into a galvanizing and timely global message of hope, inspiration and limitless possibilities in a time of change.

The poignant and evocative collection features a diverse assemblage of, established and emerging, international dance/electronic music innovators such as CSS (BRAZIL), KARSH KALE (INDIA), TSZPUN (CHINA), KIMBAR (RUSSIA),  DEATH IN VEGAS' RICHARD FEARLESS (ENGLAND), DJ MEME (BRAZIL), BLOW UP (ITALY), ALEX SANTER (GREECE), and FINDO GASK (SCOTLAND).

The So So Glos Announce US Tour Dates

photo by Eddie Brannan- for the Grateful Web

The SO SO GLOS are four brothers who play the punk rock and roll that they believe in. Originally from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, they now live at the Market Hotel in Bushwick- a space they founded that is both their home and community. Brews, smokes and music blasting, the J train crushing along the tracks outside, non-stop. That is their music: aggressive, urgent, and immediate- political and poetic because it has to be. But these Brooklyn kids aren't just touting the same old punk; Graced with electro MPC breaks, surf sounds, gang vox, and a little tambo it sounds fresh. Still though, after the rubble settles and the smoke clears, its unmistakenly punk rock in its spirit.

They started the infamous Market Hotel venue with promoter Todd P because they felt, with the DIY scene getting stronger; Brooklyn needed a larger all ages DIY venue. They were right- The Hotel has gone to host some of the best bands of now (No Age, The Black Lips, Dan Deacon) and some of the most legendary NYC parties in recent memory. Never content to play hometown heroes The SO SO GLOS self-released their S/T full length in 2007 and supported it with DIY touring at house parties and punk clubs all around the US.

In August The SO SO GLOS recorded "TOURISM/TERRORISM" at Staten Islands SOR studios with Adam Reich producing and mixing done by Spidey (Ghostface Killah). At 27 minutes long, the record is somewhere between an EP and an album. It was made a shortplayer "for the trigger happy iPod generation" half-jokes 21 year old lead singer Alex Levine with a grin. These guys are for real.

The SO SO GLOS will begin a new tour in January, with dates lasting until everyone f@cking gets it.

Catherine Russell at The Metropolitan Room, NYC - 1/11/09

Photos by Anthony Pepitone- for the Grateful Web

Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker, born with an enviable musical pedigree. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was born in Panama and moved to New Orleans and then New York City, becoming a pioneering pianist/bandleader, and Louis Armstrong's long-time musical director.  Her mother, Carline Ray, is an outstanding bassist and vocalist and holder of advanced degrees from Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music, who has performed with Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis. Not surprisingly considering her roots, Catherine Russell is a one of a kind vocalist.  She has toured the world, performing and recording with a wide array of trend setting artists, including Paul Simon, David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, and Rosanne Cash.

Since the 2006 release of her debut album, Cat, on Harmonia Mundi's World Village label, Catherine Russell has been making fans and friends and grabbing listeners by the ear. "She is a fresh and original voice. The most exciting debut album I've heard in a long time" writes New York Sun critic and Sinatra biographer, Will Friedwald, who picked Cat among his top 10 cds of the year. "It's a delight to hear the real thing in Catherine Russell.", writes Nat Hentoff in The Wall Street Journal.

Ms. Russell has been a hit on major events like Rochester Int'l Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Bern International Jazz Festival, JVC-New York Jazz Festival, Detroit International Jazz Festival, Tanglewood Jazz Festival, Lotus Festival, and at premier venues like The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Sculler's in Boston, The Dakota in Minneapolis, The Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and Yoshi's in San Francisco. She has appeared on the nationally syndicated shows Mountain Stage, JazzSet on NPR, Studio 360, and The Tavis Smiley Show on PBS-TV. Reviews and profiles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Phoenix, Living Blues, Blues Review, Downbeat, Goldmine, No Depression, Boston Herald, Newark Star Ledger, JazzTimes, Chicago Sun Times, and many more.

Cat spent weeks on JazzWeek magazine's chart for national airplay, while 'Back O Town Blues' was a top 10 download on I-Tunes Jazz Chart. National Public Radio's top 5 jazz cd's of 2006 included Cat, as chosen by WBGO dj's.

Catherine Russell's 2nd album on World Village, Sentimental Streak, hit the streets on February 12, 2008, to universal acclaim, becoming a world-wide favorite of critics and fans alike. Catherine appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on NBC-TV, Fresh Air with Terry Gross on NPR, Beale Street Caravan, and in concert on CBC-Radio in Canada. Her 2nd cd reached the #3 position on I-Tunes Jazz Chart, while also charting on Billboard's Jazz Chart, JazzWeek, and Living Blues Radio Chart. She recently won a prestigious German Record Critics' Award in the Jazz category and Living Blues magazine's 2008 critics' poll as "Artist Deserving More Attention."

Mahjongg Announce Winter 2009 US TOUR

Mahjongg- for the Grateful Web

Originally formed in the great bounteous Midwest region of the United States "Mahjongg" began as a simple experiment between The Grid and The Sphere.  To attract the brood orientation of the young mind, Mahjongg knew the only way to spread Kontpab's message was by forming a musiK band.  This ever-expanding Sect uses "irratainment" to teach the warnings and Revelations of the almighty god Kontpab. Kontpab basically warns the human race of the mass "funneling" of the populace minds into The Grid.

Once trapped in The Grid themselves, Kontpab instructed Mahjongg to make a pilgrimage to Chicago, IL., where they would form their first "warning orbs," at local art spaces and bars, and in turn be shown the light that is The Sphere.  It was during this time that the Machinegong EP was recorded, and their first attempt to leave Kontpab's message sublimated in the patricians of the clubs was a success.  Kontpab showed Mahjongg that The Grid's seemingly well-defined rules and laws could in fact be used against The Grid itself.

Many not briefed on the vast Kontpab religion will never fully understand Mahjongg during their "Warning Orbs," so they cut another album to set into stone what Kontpab had clearly shown them: Raydoncong 2005. Again using The Grid's vast amalgam of mathematical tools against itself, The Sect were able to demonstrate to the brood, for instance with prime numbered polyrhythms, that not only was the path to The Sphere full of spectacle and self awakening, but pharmaceuticals, beer, and dancing as well.  It was here that Mahjongg became not only teacher, but student, and this is where The Chicago Sects association with the Water Babies began.

Born into the great Chicago winter of '06 in the septic rivers of the Magikal Forest, the Water Babies used Kontpabs undivided and all seeing power to unlock The Sphere's greatest secret: improvisation. With these new teachings from the almighty Kontpab, Mahjongg was able to create a new church and recording studio for the Chicago Sect.  Soon the tapestries of aural chaos were tempered and perfected.  Software was upgraded and drums tuned.  With nervous but relevant hair follicles and motley threads, Mahjongg hit the scene.  Many eons of "Warning Orbs" have since commenced, but the human race still chooses to "funnel" into The Grid.  It is because of this that Mahjongg is left with no choice but to invoke the name of our great God almighty itself.  And it is with this name they proudly present to you their new album, Kontpab.  For we are all Kontpab.

Elliot Murphy: Back in the USA for a West Coast Tour

Elliott Murphy- for the Grateful Web

Rock troubadour Elliott Murphy and multi-cultural singer-songwriter Jann Klose continue their U.S. tour this week, with shows in San Francisco, Felton (Santa Cruz), Tehachapi (near Bakersfield and Edwards Air Force Base), Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego.  The two will also be performing at the NAMM Convention.

Elliott Murphy first came to prominence 35 years ago with the release of the now-more-relevant-than-ever album, AQUASHOW.  That, along with NIGHT LIGHTS, LOST GENERATION, and JUST A STORY FROM AMERICA were played on mainstream radio throughout the United States.  These albums were also picked up internationally, especially in Japan and Europe, where Elliott has found international stardom.  19 years ago he moved to France. He last played the United States in 2000 at New York City's Bottom Line, and his last west coast dates were in 1996.

Elliott has released 30 albums, his latest is NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND, which has received 5 stars from ALLMUSIC.COM.  Some of the musicians who've collaborated with Elliott on his recordings are Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, and the Rolling Stones' Mick TaylorElliott was also honored with a monumental exposition, LAST OF THE ROCK STARS-RETROSPECTIVE at Paris' Town Hall, and has been cited in literature in the work, SAVAGE DETECTIVES by the late Roberto Bolano, who now has a best-seller book called, 2666.

Elliott, who is already played on Sirius-XM's the LOFT, will be the subject of a story on an upcoming Bob Edwards' show on the satellite station, and he will be releasing his 31st album this March 16, his 60th birthday.  And this spring, he'll be acting in the French movie "La Ligne Blanche" out in spring 2009.

Opening all dates will be Jann Klose, whose new album REVERIE is an independent release that has been picked up by 90 AAA radio stations in North America, a variety of folk and jazz stations, some European stations including regional BBCs and Radio Caroline, and played on a mixture of formats including talk, classic rock morning and "Acoustic Sunrise"-styled shows, and Sirius-XM's The Loft.  KMMT-Mammoth Lakes, a top 40/modern rock station, has also picked up on Jann's album.  Born in Germany, raised in Kenya and South Africa, Jann has collaborated on stage with Renaissance's Annie Haslam, songwriters Rosanne Cash, Marty Stuart, and Roger McGuinn.

The tour has received praise in every city it's played so far from Boston, MA to Larchmont, NY.  THE WASHINGTON POST'S Christopher Porter notes, "Murphy engaged his campfire crowd with direct eye contact, making the evening's intimacy even more intense. His textured voice - as with his songwriting, it's equal parts Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen - also exhibited tonal strength and beauty."

The Schenectady Gazette's Brian McElhiney writes, "Murphy gives hungry cadre of stateside fans what they came for."  Indeed the fans also are receiving more than their money's worth.  One Boston fan blogged, "Murphy sang with the resilience of a survivor who will always continue to grow and change. His performance let us in on a taste of what his journey has been like. I know I felt changed by it. Murphy's show was a true rock 'n' roll baptism."  A female working in Washington, DC media had never heard of either artist, and her boyfriend was curious about the venue they played in.  She said, "This was the most memorable night of rock & roll I've ever had.  Both artists are great."

Miniature Tigers Tour w/Dear & The Headlights, Lenka

Miniature Tigers - photos by Brandon Lee- for the Grateful Web

Miniature Tigers' sound was forged in the bedroom of frontman Charlie Brand, only to quickly outgrow the space, with the band soon finding itself on stage, in the studio and signed to Phoenix's Modern Art Records in short order. Brand's lyrics – a mix of deeply personal insights and playful references to the disparate cultural artifacts that have informed his existence – and effortlessly constructed indie-pop arrangements have made fans in his native Phoenix and beyond. They stretch to Los Angeles, where he reconnected with drummer, collaborator and fellow charter member of the band Rick Schaier while living in Hollywood, and far beyond thanks to the Internet, which it seems people are into these days.

Miniature Tigers' debut album "Tell it to the Volcano" runs the lyrical gamut, taking inspiration from and referencing TV's Lost (which rates a Dharma Initiative sticker on Brand's acoustic) as easily as it probes the joy and heartbreak of Charlie's own life, while managing not to take itself too seriously. Brand wrote the album while on the lam – not from the law, but rather from a relationship he described as "brutal." He left Phoenix to clear his head, landing in Los Angeles and collaborating with his friend Rick to complete the long-gestating album. It was his catharsis – with cannibals and volcanoes stepping in for the real-world problems that had both beset and inspired him. In the end the album represents Charlie's effort to codify, examine, and ultimately move past a 2-year stretch of his life.

Charlie and Rick are joined in their live incarnation by friends and collaborators Lou Kummerer on bass and Lawrence Hearn on lead guitar and keyboards, for performances that seem to give equal time to playing songs and intra-band joking. They aim for a controlled chaos aesthetic that eschews "auto-pilot" at all costs.

In an effort to further confound the expectations of those around the band, they chose to have their video directed by someone who had never helmed one before…or at least never an authorized music video. The band tapped "Yacht Rock" creator JD Ryznar to direct their video for Cannibal Queen in the hopes he would recreate the magic of his wildly popular Internet video series. Ryznar quickly assimilated the band's aesthetic and turned in a video equal parts "Weird Science" and "Frankenstein," to the band's delight.

"Tell it to the Volcano" is currently available on iTunes, as well as a limited-edition letterpressed CD package and on vinyl at shows and via the band's web site. They'll be touring through the winter of 2009, when the album will find its way to stores through an official retail release.

Paper Bird & Elephant Revival @ Boulder Theater

Paper Bird - photos by Sam Holloway- for the Grateful Web

Paper Bird is best understood not by a description of their music (which you could call ragtime, jazz, modern folk or Americana), but by a rundown of their unique instrumentation: 3 Female Vocals on a bouncing bed of Banjo, Trombone, Upright Bass and Guitar. Paper Bird has been called "black and white twentieth century America at its best" (Syntax Magazine), "a musical manifestation of the roots and philosophy that Coloradans share" (Boulder Weekly), and "a more beguiling Jolie Holland with the sublime, mellifluous, old-timey harmonies of the Chordettes" (Westword).

Elephant Revival is a soulful, seductive quiver of songwriters and multi-instrumentalists that reign from points all across America. Since Oct 06' Elephant Revival have herded in a greatly applauded neo-acoustic gyptic revival at festivals, theaters, clubs and house concerts. The Revival plays entirely original music with a few carefully chosen traditionals and eclectic cover tunes but their precise genre is hard to pin down. As independent film director Mikey Eberle elaborates, "When I hear Elephant Revival I am struck by my inability to define it. I am forced to confront the music as it is, connecting to it with a virgin spirit of mind. Consequently it feels like I am experiencing music and all its joys for the very first time."

Coltrane''s Blue Train- for the Grateful Web

The most enduring of the dozen or so records made by John Coltrane in 1957, Blue Train was John Coltrane's sole recording for the legendary Blue Note label.  The sextet setting allying the tenor giant with trumpeter Lee Morgan and trombonist Curtis Fuller has gone on to become one of the most popular entries in the Coltrane discography.  Curtis Fuller, the only trombonist to record in a Coltrane led band, returns to recreate the classic sound of the group with young veterans Terell Stafford and Javon Jackson filling out the frontline and an all-star rhythm section of George Cables, Lonnie Plaxico and Andrew Cyrille.
