Furthur | Brooklyn, NY | 6/27/2010 | Review

Furthur played this past weekend at MCU Park in Brooklyn New York, home to the Brooklyn Cyclones and just adjacent to one of the most famous amusement parks in the world, Coney Island.   Growing up 10 minutes from NYC I felt almost embarrassed to admit I have never been to Coney Island before.  During Furthur's intermission I spoke to my mom who told me she would come to Coney Island when she was a kid, which really illustrates the longevity (sorry Mom)  of Coney Island.  My first memory as a kid is when The Warriors had to make it back to Coney Island in the classic 1979 flick.  Always loved that movie.

Currently Futhur's line-up includes: Phil Lesh, Bobby Weir, John Kadlecik (formerly of Dark Star Orchestra), Joe Russo (Benvento/Russo Duo), Jeff Chimenti (RatDog), and back-up vocalists Sunshine Becker & Jeff Pehrson.  As much as I am the biggest Deadhead I am not one to rave about Furthur's shows.... they're fun -- I don’t expect to relive the Grateful Dead experience, because this cannot be relived. -- But I do give kudos to Phil and Bobby for always giving their all. I read reviews where folks rave about their shows, but you're not going to get that from me.  Bobby's voice sounds tired -- Phil still sounds solid, though. He continues to be the man. I do like having John sitting in what's really the most difficult shoes ever to be filled -- he has the ability to change tempos, a nice tone and far more melodic than most others who have been put into those shoes. A fun show, sure -- stellar...not so much, but certainly worth seeing the band for a night of dancing, good friends and always the best audience in the history of rock-n-roll.  It was pretty cool having the waning moon hovering over stage during Morning Dew, a really danceable Eyes of the World and a big time Help-slip-Franklin’s.

Check out photos and videos from the show -- more videos will be coming as we have to time upload them.
