10th Anniversary Production of The Christmas Revels

Founded in 2000, Rocky Mountain Revels is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to promoting public education, understanding, and appreciation of traditional music, dance, drama, and ritual through participatory theater and communal celebration.

We have created Revels productions of Medieval, Renaissance, pan-Celtic, Victorian, Scottish, Irish Immigrants, and Colorado Pioneers. Each year, beginning in the late summer, nearly 100 people from all over the greater Boulder and Denver area come together to rehearse and create a production with full historical costumes, live traditional music, and authentic dance and theater.

Revels productions are a unique blend of amateur and professional performers. Guest artists appearing with Rocky Mountain Revels have included North American step dancing champion Alexandra Siega, Native American flutist Leon Littlebird, folk artist David Jones, Boulder Philharmonic concertmaster Gregory Walker, and many others.

The Dresden Dolls Announce First Tour in 3 Years

After a long hiatus, The Dresden Dolls are thrilled to announce their first live tour in 3 years! The pioneering and influential "punk cabaret" duo comprised of Amanda Palmer (piano, vocals) and Brian Viglione (drums, guitar, bass) will be kicking off a few weeks of dates starting on Halloween at Irving Plaza in NYC. The date marks the exact 10th anniversary of the birth of the band (Viglione met Palmer on Halloween night of 2000, at an art/salon party at Palmer's house, at which she was playing her solo songs on piano.) "Amanda's songwriting was so brilliant and raw, I couldn't have designed a more perfectly suited counterpart. I knew then I'd found my musical accomplice.", says Viglione. They will also make a stop in New Orleans for a special gulf oil spill relief-benefit for BTNEP, an organization that is working to preserve, protect, and restore the Barataria and Terrebonne estuaries of Louisiana.

Since The Dolls' last performance (which was at Rock The Vote in DC on the Inauguration Day of President Obama), Palmer has been tirelessly busy building her solo career and online empire, centered around the 2008 release of her Ben Folds-Produced solo album "Who Killed Amanda Palmer". The album was accompanied by a hardback-book of the same name and included a collection of dead photographs of Palmer and short stores by author Neil Gaiman (to whom Palmer recently became engaged). Palmer also recently released a donation-based Radiohead covers ukulele EP titled "Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on Her Magical Ukulele", setting the tech community abuzz about how a donation-based model can earn a mid-level artist a living wage.  Before they embark on tour, Palmer will be starring as the Emcee in the American Repertory Theater’s production of Kander & Ebb's dark weimar musical "Cabaret". "The time apart has done nothing but given both of us an appreciation of how incredibly special and powerful our band is," says Palmer. "Our live musical chemistry is completely unique, almost magical, and we don't take that for granted. I can't wait to get on a stage with Brian again. Nobody hits the drums like that man - he's in a class all his own. And when we play together live, we create an entire world we can't otherwise create."

Meanwhile, drummer/producer and talented musical jack-of-all-trades Brian Viglione has appeared on 30 albums since 2008, most notably, Nine Inch Nails' "Ghosts I–IV". Viglione's latest hard-hitting album, "Face Of The Sun", which he produced and co-wrote, is available digitally via Bandcamp and will be featured on his new website , www.brianviglione.com. Amidst the busy recording and teaching schedule, he's toured internationally with The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Franz Nicolay, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Martin Bisi, Botanica, and The Cliks.  "A great strength of the band has always been that we've always given each other time to explore creative areas outside The Dresden Dolls, then bring what we've learned back to the table. Our love for the music and playing together is mirrored by the continual support of our fans, and we're more than ready to deliver the goods to them."

The current wave of theatrical artists are citing The Dolls and their flamboyant emotional and theatrical antics as an inspiration, from up-and-coming theatrical-pop artist and Dolls’ fan Marina & The Diamonds to Lady Gaga (who lists The Dresden Dolls as an influence on her MySpace).

"It's been really inspiring to see an evolution towards theatrical freedom among indie bands over the last ten years", says Palmer. "When we were starting out in 2000, we were surrounded by the likes of The Vines and The Strokes. People often wrote us off as a gimmick because of our weird theatrical bent. Now we're surrounded by comrades...Antony, The Scissor Sisters, The Decembrists, Arcade Fire, CocoRosie, the list goes on and on. People aren't as afraid take risks onstage. It's inspiring, and I'm proud we've played our little part in the continuum of empowered freaky people."

An Evening with Charlie Hunter, Thurs Sept 9 @ the Fox Theatre

As a young guitarist growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Charlie Hunter was looking for a way to stand out in the '80s. His primary influences were jazz great Joe Pass and the fluid Tuck Andress, (of the guitar/vocal duo Tuck & Patti), both six-string guitarists who were adept at blending bass notes into their standard guitar melodies to make themselves sound like two musicians at once. But Hunter wanted to take it one step further, and set out to find an instrument on which he could simultaneously function as both a guitarist and a bassist. For his self-titled 1993 debut CD, Hunter played a seven-string guitar for the duality effect, locking down the bottom with drummer Jay Lane and mixing melodically with saxophonist David Ellis. But on his trio's 1995 sophomore release, "Bing, Bing, Bing!," Hunter unveiled his custom-made Novax eight-string, the guitar that finally allowed him to realize his capacity. Designed by Ralph Novak, the instrument featured special frets and separate signals for its guitar and bass portions. Picking bass notes with his right thumb while fretting them with his left index finger (while at the same time fingerpicking guitar chords and single notes with his right hand's remaining four digits as he frets with his left hand's other three fingers), Hunter achieves the real sound of two-for-one.

Hunter played with the side group T.J. Kirk in the mid-'90s, a band that derived their name from the cover material they exclusively played: Thelonious Monk, James Brown and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Initially wanting to call themselves James T. Kirk before being threatened by the Star Trek TV and film series, T.J. Kirk released a self-titled 1995 debut and the 1996 follow-up, "If Four Was One", before disbanding. Hunter took drummer Scott Amendola with him for his next project, an ambitious instrumental remake of Bob Marley's "Natty Dread"album in its entirety. Also featuring saxophonists Kenny Brooks and Calder Spanier, the 1997 release beat the odds by becoming arguably Hunter's best album. After Spanier died from injuries sustained from being hit by a car, Hunter moved east to New York, taking Amendola with him. Teaming with vibraphonist Stefon Harris and percussionist John Santos, Charlie Hunter & Pound for Pound's 1998 CD Return of the Candyman is dedicated to Spanier. A departure from Natty Dread, mainly due to the work of Harris, the disc featured a vibes-heavy cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle."

Hunter's modus operandi had now become shifting personnel changes, and in between tours he recorded a 1999 duo CD with drummer/percussionist Leon Parker and a self-titled 2000 CD that featured Parker and an otherwise ensemble cast. Hunter also contributed greatly to the 2000 comeback CD by drummer Mike Clark, "Actual Proof". Hunter concluded his run at Blue Note with 2001's "Songs from the Analog Playground", which saw him collaborating with vocalists for the first time, ranging from labelmates Norah Jones and Kurt Elling to Mos Def. 2003 found Hunter with a new label (Ropeadope) and two new bands (the Charlie Hunter Quintet) on "Right Now Move" and the beginning of Groundtruther, a partnership with percussionist/composer Bobby Previte.  They released "Come in Red Dog, This is Tango Leader" before adopting the Groundtruther moniker. For 2003's "Friends Seen and Unseen",  it was back to the Charlie Hunter Trio, with drummer  Derrek Phillips and saxman John Ellis, both members of the Quintet. By now, Groundtruther had taken on a life of its own, with Hunter and Previte joined by a rotating third member.  "Latitude" was first, in 2004 with saxophonist Greg Osby, followed by "Longitude" with DJ Logic in 2005.

In 2006, the Charlie Hunter Trio resurfaced with "Coperopolis" and almost immediately announced that it was disbanding as Ellis wanted to further pursue a solo career. What to do? Form another trio! After recruiting Erik Deutsch on keys and Simon Loft on drums, they released "Mistico" in the summer of 2007, Hunter's first album for Fantasy.

    Masters of improvisation, The String Cheese Incident has reached the cusp of an explosive national breakthrough through outstanding live performances and a dedication to touring. Now averaging over 160 shows a year, the band has attracted fans of all genres by mixing high energy fun with rigorous musicianship and impassioned artistry.

    The String Cheese Incident crafts undeniable masterpieces from an astonishing mix of roots musics, with intricate mountain bluegrass, transcendent Afro-pop rhythms, sensuous Latin melodies and breezy Calypso grooves that branch from a trunk of traditional American rock. Applying the grassroots ethic that has made the band into successful touring artists,The String Cheese Incident instead chose to launch a full-scale label, Sci Fidelity Records. The band now continues to build its grassroots empire with a website that attracts one million hits a month, an in-house ticketing service and a travel agency designed to cater to their fans.

    While the band's Incidents have become the stuff of legend, it is in the studio that The String Cheese Incident distinguishes itself in craftsmanship. Buoyed by the 1998 release "Round The Wheel," which has become the band's best selling album to date with its mix of richly textured arrangements and tight, ear-catching pop tunes, Sci Fidelity Records and The String Cheese Incident are currently choosing tracks for a live double album that will be released in early fall.

    The String Cheese Incident received the honor of opening and closing the 1998-99 New Year's Eve Celebration at the Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland, CA, with remaining members of the Grateful Dead and Hot Tuna. The band's success on a massive U.S. tour in the spring of 1999 culminated in three sold-out shows at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, and a string of sold out shows along the east coast.

    In June, The String Cheese Incident returns to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival as a headlining act, where they stole the show as the opening act in 1993, just six months after their official formation. This summer, the band will also headline both the High Sierra Music Festival and the Oregon Country Fair. Looking towards the millennium, The String Cheese Incident will host a two-night New Years extravaganza in Portland, OR that will encompass a "world-music" theme on a scale of grand proportions.

    The creative and musical foundation that constitutes the essence of The String Cheese Incident is always evolving with the band's musical tastes and their interaction with the fans in the live setting. The albums speak volumes and the critical acclaim rises, but there is no substitute for a live "Incident".

    Intro to Veganism

    Every year in the U.S., more than 25 billion animals are slaughtered for food. Raising animals on factory farms is cruel and ecologically devastating. Eating animals is bad for our health, leading directly to many diseases and illnesses, including heart attacks, strokes, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.

    For animals

    Animals on factory farms are treated like machines. Within days of birth, for example, chickens have their beaks seared off with a hot blade. Male cows and pigs are castrated without painkillers. All of these animals spend their brief lives in crowded and ammonia-filled conditions, many of them so cramped that they can't even turn around or spread a wing. Many do not get a breath of fresh air until they are prodded and crammed onto trucks for a nightmarish ride to the slaughterhouse, often through weather extremes and always without food or water. The animals are hung upside down and their throats are sliced open, often while they're fully conscious.

    For the environment

    Today's factory farms use everything but the "moo," "cluck," and "oink" — but in the process, they leave behind an environmental devastation that generations to come will be forced to clean up. Raising animals for food requires more than half the water used in the United States and is the biggest polluter of our water and topsoil. Coyotes and other animals are poisoned and shot by western cattle ranchers who consider federal land to be their land for grazing. Our country's meat addiction is slowly poisoning and depleting our land, water, and air.

    The only two researchers in human history who have successfully reversed heart disease, by far America's biggest killer, have included an exclusively vegetarian diet as a part of their programs. On the Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn programs, patients become "heart attack proof" (to quote Dr. Esselstyn, in the August 1999 issue of the American Journal of Cardiology) by getting their cholesterol levels to below 150 (the average vegan cholesterol level is 128), the level below which no one has ever been documented as having died from a heart attack. And people who consume animal products are also 40 percent more susceptible to cancer, and at increased risk for many other illnesses, including stroke, obesity, appendicitis, osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, and food poisoning. Additionally, meat contains accumulations of pesticides and other chemicals up to 14 times more concentrated than those in plant foods.

    When Mark Karan takes a break from life on the road as lead guitarist with Bob Weir's RatDog, what does he do for fun? He hits the highway with his own band!

    Since 1998, Mark has been touring with offshoots of the Grateful Dead (including The Other Ones, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum and Bobby Weir's Ratdog).

    Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Paul Carrack, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young, Alex Call and Sophie B. Hawkins

    Mark has appeared on the Today Show, Austin City Limits, Regis and Kathy Lee, and Late Late Night with Craig Kilborn, in addition to numerous radio stations nationwide, and has been making fans around the country.
