Tea Leaf Green readies 'Radio Tragedy!'

It ain’t easy being gypsies, especially ones who sing for their supper. San Francisco Bay Area troubadours Tea Leaf Green are newfangled Lost Boys, a traveling gang dedicated to seeking wisdom and experience in places both glorious and seedy. The band’s seventh studio album, Radio Tragedy!, will be released through Thirty Tigers available worldwide on June 7. Fans who pre-order the album by May 1st are eligible to win handwritten lyrics from the songwriter.

In many ways, this quintet is the essence of rock’s adventurous, playfully outlaw spirit, all of which ultimately fuels songs that resonate with classic vibrations, open-ended possibilities and radio-ready charm. TLG are bruised romantics with heavy minds and a lighthearted way with experimentation, as likely to jam out a number as they are to nail a primo verse-verse-chorus pop gem.

All the steadily growing promise of Tea Leaf Green comes to fruition on their new album with the aid of producer Jeremy Black (Apollo Sunshine). The band has crafted a powerhouse work in Radio Tragedy!, with the oomph of their stellar live performances melded to a truly impressive array of vocal nuance, rib-sticking song craft and smart studio flourishes.

From the Bee Gees-esque bite of “Easy To Be Your Lover” to the bouncing modern rock of “You’re My Star,” Radio Tragedy! showcases a contemporary American rock monster fully emerging from the shadows, ready to take on any comers with a sound that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with skilled contemporaries like My Morning Jacket and The Strokes.

Together, Trevor Garrod (keys, vocals), Josh Clark (guitar, vocals), Scott Rager (drums), Reed Mathis (bass, vocals) and newest member Cochrane McMillan (drums) have made a record that’s both timely and timeless — a strange, beautiful space that Tea Leaf Green inhabits naturally and gracefully.

“Much of this record is a reflection on the ups and downs on the road to radio gold, chasing dreams and ghosts on America’s highways and finding triumph, sorrow and sacrifice in the pursuit,” says Josh Clark. “Tea Leaf Green has been a band for over a decade.  We’ve tried to simply focus on music, just music, honest music, operating in the shadow of braggart auto-tuned rappers and inane teeny bop prop puppets that has come to rule and choke the life out of what was once America’s greatest export — rock ’n’ roll.”

“I don't think any of us have ever felt completely satisfied with our past studio experiences, so we went into this one with the deliberate intent of making a complete album.  Each of us brought our own vision and we did our best to fuse those ideas in the studio, all of us committed to seeing each member’s vision take shape,” says Scott Rager. “TLG has been a band for 13 years and I think we’ve made the record we always thought we were capable of making.”

“I wanted a story — something loud, something bright, something to scare your kids goodnight. There is adventure to be had. The Drums Release "The New World" For Japan Disaster Relief Efforts

The Drums will release brand new track “The New World” as a download starting April 18th, with all band’s proceeds going to Japan disaster relief efforts. The end date for purchase-with-donation is September 30, 2011 as this is when the Japanese Red Cross will close the account for donations.

“The New World” is a one-off release that won’t be featured on the band’s forthcoming full length album. The track is available from iTunes and www.thedrums.com.

The Shivers Heading Out on Tour This Spring!

On May 10th, The Shivers will return with their latest record More, set for release on Silence Breaks. Recorded in Manchester, UK early last year, the album finds Queens, NY songwriters Keith Zarriello and Jo Schornikow exploring everything from shambly garage rock to melancholic barroom ballads. In honor of the band’s new album, the band has made “Used to Be” available for free download. Check out the track HERE. Using every dime they’d saved, Zarriello and Schornikow traveled to Manchester in Spring of 2010 to record their latest record in an entirely analog studio. Over five days, the two worked tirelessly, fleshing out the tracks they had worked on in the small church in Queens where the band practices. The end result was More, an album that runs the gamut of American rock ’n’ roll, delving into everything from gritty Lou-Reed-inspired rock to the swaggering soul of Nina Simone. Starting with the brief piano elegy “My Mouth is for Love,” More segues quickly into “Irrational Love,” a bouncy organ-driven rock track with a chorus that sounds like it was plucked from 1966. The album teeters between the upbeat pop of tracks like “Used to Be” and “I Want You Back” to the heartsick, Leonard-Cohen-inspired ballads like “Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars” and “Love Is In The Air.” The album closes with the record’s title track “More,” a slow-building confessional that serves the record’s triumphant last call. It’s an apt end for a record that sounds like an apologetic love note, written on barroom cocktail napkin.
Hailing from Queens, NY, Keith Zarriello began writing music as The Shivers started back in 2001 and has spent the last ten years mining the depths of American rock, developing a songwriting style that ranges from earnest, heartbroken ballads to ’60s garage rock revival. In 2004, Zarrellio released Charades, which featured the much lauded track “Beauty,” which earned universal praise from the likes of Pitchfork and The Guardian, and would end up being named Gorilla Vs Bear’s thirteenth best song of the decade. The album also caught the ear of an Australian, classically-trained church organist named Jo Schornikow, who joined the band as a full-time member that year. Adding counterpoint of beauty with her piano and keyboard flutters, The Shivers spent the next six years touring aggressively in the U.S. and the U.K., and releasing a grand total of four albums, leading up to the ultimate release of More this year.

Band Together for Ally | A Benefit for Ally Strong

Musicians from the elite Long Island/NYC/national jam band and rock and roll community are coming together for a one night effort to challenge small cell cancer and raise money for one of its own suffering from this disease.

Band Together for Ally” will take place on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at The Homestead, 107 South Street in Oyster Bay, Long Island from 6pm till at least midnight.  Allyson Strong, after receiving her master’s degree last year, was stunningly diagnosed with small cell cervical cancer just before Labor Day.  Radiation and chemo treatments at Sloan Kettering in New York City have not yielded desired results. The community is rallying to assist with the financial needs of the family to fight this dreaded disease. Small cell cervical cancer is an extraordinarily rare diagnosis. There is much to be learned about this specific type of cancer.

This one night fundraising event will assist Allyson and her family offset an extraordinary financial burden and will feature an unprecedented- one time only lineup featuring Rob Barraco (Dark Star Orchestra/The Dead/Phil Lesh and Friends) an original founding member of Red Flannel Hash along with Ally’s dad John Strong, Jeff Mattson (Dark Star Orchestra), John Strong, Jim Kempster, Lee Finkelstein (Funk Filharmonik/Blues Brothers) Rob Barraco and Patrick “Jake” Cummings will reunite as the original Red Flannel Hash for the first time in over thirty years.

Along with the Red Flannel Hash reunion additional acts scheduled to appear include: The Jim Pin Band with Tom Bowes and members of Funk Filharmonik, Quick Draw, The Mike Nugent Band and The FolkadelicsRed Flannel Hash will appear in its original entirety with Ally’s dad John playing bass in both the former 1970’s version of the band as well as with the current configuration acoustic for two separate sets.

Houston Rock Band Pale Sets Release of New CD

Houston-based rock quartet Pale, known for a blend of soaring melodies set against explosive, guitar-fueled choruses, is set to release their long-awaited new recording entitled IN THE TIME OF DANGEROUS MEN on June 21st. The new CD, which will be available via independent A-Blake Records, was produced by Steve Christensen (Destiny's Child, Clay Walker), who scored a Grammy last year for his work on Townes-A Tribute to Townes Van Zandt by Steve Earle.

From "Bad Intel," the blistering opening track, to the atmospheric "Hushed Tones for Chosen Ones," IN THE TIME OF DANGEROUS MEN showcases the rock-solid songwriting that has been Pale's hallmark since the band formed nearly 10 years ago. "This band has finally got all the elements in place for something big," Artshound.com has touted of the group's new record.

IN THE TIME OF DANGEROUS MEN was recorded during a two-month period last year when the band was sequestered at their label's beach house in Crystal Beach, Texas. Pale, who have been compared favorably to Muse, Radiohead and even U2, emerged with 12 standout new songs and a renewed determination to bring their Brit-rock-influenced music to a wider audience.

Pale's big, dramatic sound is "as subtle as a freight train" as the repeating chorus from the pensive "Catastrophic Skies" implies. From deep, thought-provoking tracks like "Soon" and "My Final Warning" to the high-velocity rock of "Wolves Wait" and "Our Lone Star Shines," their homage to the great state of Texas, IN THE TIME OF DANGEROUS MEN showcases Pale's ability to write memorable songs. The driving "That Sinking Feeling," the first single from the new album, will be serviced to radio in the coming weeks.

The trademark emotive voice of Pale belongs to lead singer/guitarist and chief songwriter Calvin Stanley, who along with guitarist/ keyboardist Robb Moore, bassist Stephen Wesson and drummer Travis Middour quickly rose to the top of the Houston club scene and broadened their domain through impressive live performances on their own and as openers for acts as diverse as Depeche Mode, Roger Waters, Earshot and Blue October.

Pale's recording debut HERE was released in 2004to positive critical response. The six-song EP MANDATORY AMBULANCE followed in 2007, both produced by Lars Goransson (Fastball, the Cardigans, Blondie). The release of the new CD harkens to new opportunities to come. Michael Clark, writing in the Houston Chronicle, expounded, "Pale has the rock 'n' roll ideal: the moxie and evolving know-how to get noticed in a business that gives less and less opportunity to new talent," adding, "Pale is trying to find the rock 'n' roll spirit again."

That rock 'n roll spirit is particularly evident in the extraordinary video the band created for the epic track, "Catastrophic Skies." Enlisting the aid of director Sean Duke and Chase Rees of Think Big Productions as well as countless friends and local volunteers, the result is an opulent cinematic feast with the futuristic look of a Mad Max film set against a contemporary story line about independent music artists battling corporate greed. They even hosted a Hollywood-style premiere for the video at Houston's famed River Oaks Movie Theatre late last year. The song had once been under consideration for the soundtrack of the film Twilight: Eclipse.

"Pale's music inspires the dreamer in all of us," says Calvin Stanley. "I've had my head in the clouds since I was a kid, and I believe that everything is possible with this band. That kind of dreaming heart has really helped pull us through some difficult times."

Del McCoury and Preservation Hall Release Joint Album Today!

Gent Jazz Festival 2011 line-up is complete

The line-up for the 10th edition of Gent Jazz Festival (July 7th – 17th, Bijloke) is complete, with bands such as Sonny Rollins, Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub feat. Trixie Whitley & Brian Blade, Return to Forever IV, Angus & Julia Stone, Absynthe Minded, Morcheeba, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia feat. Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Randy Brecker/Bill Evans Soulbop Band feat. Medeski, Martin & Wood, Michel Portal Quintet, Agnes Obel, Red Snapper, Dave Holland Quintet, Al Foster/George Mraz Quartet feat. Fred Hersch, Terence Blanchard Quintet and Nouvelle  Vague.

The 10th edition of the Gent Jazz Festival will begin on Thursday July 7th with none other than Sonny Rollins as the Special Nights’ headliner. This jazz legend had been on the festival’s wish list for a very long time and the birthday edition is an excellent occasion. His concert is preceded by the Michel Portal Quintet. The Nathan Daems Quintet, opens the Special Night after having won Young Jazz Talent 2010, the youth contest held yearly on the festival’s fringes.

On Friday the 8th of July, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia, together with special guest Gonzalo Rubalcaba will perform, with Dave Holland Quintet and Al Foster/George Mraz Quartet feat. Fred Hersch. The day’s opener is a coaching project in co-operation with University College Conservatory Ghent called Quartet dal Cuore feat. Paolo Ghetti.

July 9th is the festival’s first Saturday and a Special Night as well. B.B. King, Mavis Staples and the trio of Steven De Bruyn, Tony Gyselinck & Roland will be present.

On Sunday July 10th, the festival’s first four days will be concluded by Return to Forever IV Hymn of the 7th Galaxy Tour (an excellent band with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Gambale). The Belgian Rêve D’ Éléphant Orchestra will open before Terence Blanchard Quintet and Randy Brecker/Bill Evans Soulbop Band with Medeski, Martin & Wood.

Thursday July 14th three jazz queens will line up with Sing The Truth: Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves & Lizz Wright continue the legacies of Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta. Three current icons will pay tribute to the women of song from the last generation. They will be preceded by Jef Neve and his trio and Philip Catherine Plays Cole Porter.

Both revelations Agnes Obel and Agnus & Julia Stone are on stage Friday July 15th. This day will be supplemented by local band  Absynthe Minded. It’s a day dedicated to bands currently breaking through internationally and striving to meet high expectations in the future.

Gent Jazz Festival announces Gotan Project who are electro-tango masters and a retro-funk musician Raphael Saadiq on July 16th. Nouvelle Vague will be the first group to play on the initial day of the Gentse Feesten.

Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub feat. Trixie Whitley & Brian Blade will play on the closing day, July 17th. The festival organization looks forward to this concert after having cancelled Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub last year due to a motorcycle accident. But we are looking forward to vocalist Trixie Whitley as well. Last year her performance won hearts and minds with a special project. Later that day groups include: BackBack which is a local band, Red Snapper and Morcheeba with frontwoman Skye in the original line-up.

The music contest ‘Young Jazz Talent Ghent, an initiative in co-operation Duvel-Moortgat brewery will take place at the festival grounds’ entrance. Free entry every time right before the first concert on the main stage.

Thanks to the co-operation with the city museums in Ghent it is now possible to get free access to one of the 9 museums in Ghent using your Gent Jazz Festival Ticket as an admission ticket. A nice extra for festival visitors. Nearly three years since their last release, My Morning Jacket are now on the cusp of releasing the eagerly awaited new album, Circuital (ATO Records, May 31st).  The band has been gearing it all up by releasing songs from each of their five Terminal 5 shows this past October.  Today, My Morning Jacket are giving us a taste of the new album by sharing the title track and revealing it's enigmatic cover art.

More Phish Summer Tour Dates Announced

Phish has just announced additional dates to their 2011 Summer Tour, including the band's first-ever concert at the Hollywood Bowl (and their first Los Angeles appearance since 2003), and their first shows in scenic Lake Tahoe. The band will also play in San Francisco at the Outside Land's Music Festival in Golden Gate Park, two consecutive nights at The Gorge in George, WA and a three-night stand at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion.

Phish kicks off their 2011 Summer Tour on Memorial Day weekend, with three consecutive nights (May 27, 28 & 29) at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, NY. Stops along the way include Cleveland, Cincinnati, Mansfield, Darien Lake and more, as well as 2-night runs in Holmdel, Columbia and Alpharetta. The band also plays host to Super Ball IX,their own 3-Day Festival over Fourth of July Weekend in Watkins Glen, NY. The band will not be touring this fall.

Elvin Bishop's 'Raisin' Hell Revue' coming on Delta Groove on May 17

Elvin Bishop’s musical biography is no secret to anyone who has followed blues or rock over the past 40 years. Taken under wing by legendary bluesman Little Smokey Smothers in the ’60s, Bishop found a wide audience as guitarist in the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and in the ’70s scored a Top-10 radio hit with “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” Along the way, he’s carved out a niche all his own, playing an appealing mix of rootsy rock ’n’ roll, R&B and barroom boogie, steeped in the heavy blues he learned from Little Smokey all those years ago.

So when a bunch of close friends who also happen to be consummate musicians are sequestered together, as they were at sea on the 2010 Legendary Blues Cruise, what else were they to do but unite forces to create some truly exemplary music? Thankfully the tapes were rolling, and the musical experience was saved for posterity. Delta Groove Music will release the resultant Raisin’ Hell Revue live album on May 17, 2011. And with the good vibes of a ship full of fellow music lovers to buoy the band, you can really hear that everyone was having a great time.

Over the course of their featured performance, Bishop shares the vocal mike with four hard-hitting pros: blues veteran Finis Tasby (Lowell Fulson, Freddie King, Clarence Carter, Z.Z. Hill), fast-rising harmonica man John Németh (Anson Funderburgh, Junior Watson), Norwegian blues guitar star Chris (Kid) Anderson (Charlie Musselwhite’s band), and Bishop’s long-time band-mate and Bay Area legend, saxophonist Terry Hanck. They work their way through a strutting, soulful set of blues and R&B with the powerful grace of a veteran working outfit, perfectly highlighting the strengths of everyone involved. And it really is a “revue” in the classic sense of the term — various band members representing a wide array of styles move in and out of the spotlight, all presided over by the good-humored and congenial master of ceremonies Elvin Bishop. We’re treated to swinging up-tempo R&B, lowdown blues, rootsy rock ’n’ roll, and a touch of gospel; even a fantastic reworking of Bishop’s smash hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” is included featuring the wonderfully gifted and dynamic vocalist John Németh.

Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Elvin Bishop didn’t have much exposure to live music as a youngster. But his family had a radio, and in between the pop schmaltz and the C&W that ruled the airwaves in the 1950s, that radio could sometimes catch the legendary R&B programming beamed throughout the southern part of the U.S. at night by Nashville radio station WLAC. That station introduced Bishop to the classic records of Jimmy Reed, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, and once his ears had been hooked, there was no turning back for young Elvin. He soon got his first guitar and on his own began scratching out the basic outlines of the blues, R&B and rock ’n’ roll that had captured his imagination.

By the time he was preparing to go to college in the late ’50s, Bishop had earned a National Merit Scholarship, allowing him to go to almost any school he chose — and there was only one choice on Elvin’s mind, the prestigious University of Chicago, which just happened to be located on Chicago’s South Side, ground zero for much of the urban blues Elvin had been studying only from a distance. He arrived in Chicago in 1959, and before long crossed paths with a kindred spirit in Paul Butterfield.  Together, they explored the ghetto blues clubs in the black neighborhoods surrounding the university campus at a time when blues giants like Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Howlin’ Wolf could be found playing in neighborhood joints on a weeknight. Elvin soaked it all up, gaining impromptu lessons and invaluable stage time in front of discerning audiences, and forging a fluid yet powerful guitar style of his own.

By 1963, Bishop and Butterfield were ready to graduate — not necessarily from the university, but certainly from their apprenticeship under Chicago’s blues elders.  Recruiting Howlin’ Wolf’s former rhythm section of Sam Lay on drums and Jerome Arnold on bass, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band was born. In 1965, after adding Mike Bloomfield and Mark Naftalin to the lineup, their revolutionary debut LP was released, kicking open the door for virtually all the young white blues bands that followed.

Bishop remained in the fold for three albums with the Butterfield band, including their innovative East-West release (on which Bishop and Bloomfield’s intertwining guitars helped set the stage for the Allman Brothers Band among many others who followed), before venturing out on his own. Elvin released four well-received albums on Epic Records in the early ’70s before joining Capricorn Records for a couple of LPs and experiencing his biggest pop success, the national hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” from his 1976 album Struttin’ My Stuff.

As popular musical trends evolved, the recording projects tapered off, but road work kept Elvin busy through the ’80s, and by the time he hooked up with Alligator Records in 1988, he was returning to his bluesy roots. And that fertile territory has been his focus ever since.

Delta Groove Productions president Randy Chortkoff has been a fan and follower of Elvin’s music through all the many phases of his career, beginning with Butterfield in the mid ’60s, so when the opportunity arose to bring Elvin into the Delta Groove fold, Chortkoff jumped at the opportunity. The result was Elvin’s Grammy-nominated 2008 CD The Blues Rolls On, a project supported by an all-star cast of blues royalty, among them B.B. King, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, George Thorogood, James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Tommy Castro, John Németh and Angela Strehli.

The Philadelphia Inquirer noted that “ . . .he’s as lively and sharp-witted as ever. No purist, he bends a variety of styles to his irrepressible personality.”

And now, with the new Delta Groove release Raisin’ Hell Revue, Bishop and crew invoke deep blues while at sail on the deep blue sea.
