Deerhoof Announce U.S. 2011 Fall Tour

The concept of Milk Man came from Tokyo artist Ken Kagami, whose sassy cover art is the perfect match to the sly, at times frightening, but irresistibly catchy music contained inside: the Styx 'n' Stones magic of the title track, an instant pop classic if there ever was one, undeniable proof of Deerhoof's extraordinary songwriting gifts; the organ-driven monster mash of "Giga Dance," whose crazed group interplay sets a new standard for "tension and release"; the otherworldly, borderline operatic, electronica that is "Desaparecere," Deerhoof's Spanish-language debut...and that's just the first three songs! Have we ever heard a band so confidently navigate the extremes of control and chaos, edginess and beauty, profundity and just plain fun?
Deerhoof will be performing Milk Man in its entirety for the first time ever tonight, July 1st, in London at Alexandra Palace. They will joining The Flaming Lips, who will be performing The Soft Bulletin, and Dinosaur Jr., who will be performing Bug.  Milk Man vinyl will be reissued on July 5th by Polyvinyl Records.

He is best known as the frontman of the influential alternative rock band Pixies, with whom he performs under the stage name Black Francis. Following the band's breakup in 1993, he embarked on a solo career under the name Frank Black. After releasing two albums with 4AD, he left the label and formed a backing band, Frank Black and the Catholics. Caveman's 'CoCo Beware' Streets 9/13

After months of anticipation, Caveman is pleased to announce the digital release of their debut album CoCo Beware on September 13th, followed by the physical CD and vinyl release on November 15th. Exploding out of the New York scene over the last few months, the band has decided to get this hot off the presses album out as soon as possible via a digital self-release. The fans wanted it, so the fans get it — a straight-ahead ethos for a band that’s about the music FIRST.

In honor of the New York five-piece’s first release, the band has made “Old Friend” available as a free download, premiering the track with Fader Magazine this morning. Click HERE to hear the track. Recorded and produced by Nick Stumpf (French Kicks), CoCo Beware showcases the dreamy chamber pop and multi-part harmonies that have been turning heads at the band’s live shows for the better part of a year. Leading up to the release of their debut, Caveman will also be heading out on tour with The War On Drugs, hitting the east coast, midwest and Canada before returning to New York to celebrate their album release at the Mercury Lounge on Thursday, September 15th.

For Caveman, the last year and half have been a whirlwind. Formed in New York back in January of 2010, the band has gone from relative unknowns to opening for Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, White Rabbits, Here We Go Magic, Cursive, Wye Oak and Yuck in a little under a year. Listening to CoCo Beware, it’s easy to see why the band has garnered so much attention in such a short period of time. Opening with “A Country’s King of Dreams,” the band explores honey-sweet, country-tinged vocal melodies over tribal drumming. “My Time” is a slow-building pop gem, with lead singer Matthew Iwanusa’s vocals weaving in and out of band’s backing vocals. Caveman’s lush four-part harmonies, spaced-out guitars, and inventive percussion come together perfectly on the tracks “Easy Water” and “My Room.

Steve Kimock and Friends feat. Bobby Vega with Kyle Hollingsworth, Wally Ingram

Seminal guitarist Steve Kimock returns to San Francisco this summer with his elevated guitar explorations for a much anticipated show with Steve Kimock & Friends on Thursday, July 14th, featuring Bay Area veteran Bobby Vega (Zero, KVHW, Sly & the Family Stone) with Kyle Hollingsworth (String Cheese Incident) & Wally Ingram (Stockholm Syndrome, David Lindley) and special guests.

For nearly four decades Steve Kimock has earned a reputation as a guitarist with an enlightened approach to melodic improvisation, mesmerizing audiences from around the globe with his tasteful guitar speak and brilliant tone.  In a world of ‘dumbing down,’ Kimock has carved a path in the opposite direction by expanding the envelope with his signature sounds, opening minds and deepening consciousness for the better of the planet.  Kimock’s variegated brand of guitar, alternately subdued and vibrant, defies easy categorization. At times prog rock/jazz-inflected and at others gypsy-straightaway, Kimock’s rock-n-soul has been captivating audiences for more than thirty years.

KJ Denhert: ALBUM No.9.

"Album No.9 is about freedom,” says KJ Denhert. There also is a numerology connection as the album was recorded, starting Sept. 9, 2009, over the course of nine months with nine musicians, and it has nine songs.  "My life-path number is 9," says KJ.  In less than a year of it's release on Sept. 9, 2010, KJ's music video of ALBUM No.9"s yearnful "Help" is becoming a minor hit on youtube. She interprets the Beatles' standard as a plea to the world, in light of so many tragedies that were complicated due to mans inhumanity and greed, most recently in Haiti, Louisiana, Japan. Other classics on the album are "Alfie," "Pennies From Heaven, "The Shadow of Your Smile," "Chanson Baz Bar," and "Smoke on the Water."

"Choose Your Weapon," which won the Independent Music Award for the Sing Out For Social Action" award for recordings released in 2010, and "Let It Go" are two of ALBUM No.9's originals that have become favorites of KJ's fans.

This November, KJ will be celebrating her 15th Year Anniversary as KJ Denhert fronting her band.  But her career dates back to the '60s when she first started playing guitar at age 10, listening to Sergio Mendes, and John Hartford!

In the 1980s, as a young woman, she played guitar and sang with an all-female ban called Fire in North America and Europe, spent time in Cleveland fronting Cyclone Sisters.  Upon her move band to NY City in 1997, she formed the NY Unit, and the rest is history.

In addition to running her own band and Mother Cyclone label, KJ has been named among the six winners of the Kerrville New Folk Song contest in June 2006 for "Private Angel" and won the Mountain Stage New Song contest in August 05 for "Little Mary." The Album, ANOTHER YEAR GONE BY, LIVE, won the 2006 Independent Music Award for Best Live Performance.

The Irrepressibles Release Debut Mirror Mirror in America on 9/9

At long last, the flamboyant, fantastical, and unfathomable Irrepressibles will release their debut album, Mirror Mirror digitally in America on August 9th, followed by a special edition of the album October 25th featuring exclusive remixes from Röyksopp, Hercules & Love Affairand Zero 7 amongst others. The single “In This Shirt” will be available with exclusive remixes via Beatport on June 27th. For a taste of the album, the English group has also made “Forget The Past” available as a free download HERE (feel free to share), and see a performance video of “Forget The Past” HERE. The group has also released three videos for “In Your Shirt”: check out the band performing in their creation The Human Music Box HERE, footage from the movie The Forgotten Circus HERE, and Roy Raz’ video for the track HERE (NSFW).

Led by creative director, conceptual artist, composer, lead vocalist and choreographer Jamie McDermott, the 10-piece performance orchestra has already earned comparisons to early David Bowie, Kate Bush, Anthony & The Johnsons and even Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band. And on Mirror Mirror, the band has created an unparalleled album that fuses European orchestration with pop melodies and soaring cathartic vocals. From the dramatic opener “My Friend Jo” to the galloping rhythms of “Anvil”; from the yearning echoes of “Forget The Past” through to the intensely intimate “In This Shirt”, Mirror Mirror is a beautifully constructed sonic exploration depicting Jamie McDermott's confessional stories of love, anger, lust and loss with a journey through The Irrepressibles’ mystical and theatrical world.

Over the last seven years, The Irrepressibles have pioneered a new frontier in pop performance. Using conceptual sets, and teams of artists in film, dance, avant-garde costume and make-up, the collective bring these songs to life through create extraordinary live spectacles. They have staged their inimitable displays all over Europe, including performances at the Hackney Empire, Roundhouse in London, a Roman amphitheatre in Barcelona, a 17th Century villa in Sicily, the infamous La Cigale in Paris, and played two shows at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London to capacity crowds.

Happy 70th Birthday, Robert Hunter!

What a long, strange trip it's been indeed... June 23 marks lyricist, singer-songwriter, and poet Robert Hunter's 70th birthday. A long-time "member" of the band, Hunter first joined up with his old friend Jerry and the gang after penning the fantastical "China Cat Sunflower." He would go on to write countless lyrics for the majority of the band's original songs including the much-beloved "Dark Star," the all-time classic "Friend of the Devil," and of course, "Truckin'."

-

Robert Hunter joined the Grateful Dead in the fall of 1967, when he arrived at a rehearsal just in time to write the first verse of the band's classic "Dark Star." Though he'd never play onstage, he became not only a genuine band member but its secret Ace in the hole. Though Bob Weir's words for "The Other One" would endure, most of the band's early verbal efforts would not; it was Hunter's work that would elevate their songs from ditties to rich, complete stories set to song. Hunter had fallen into the Dead's general scene in 1961 when he'd met Garcia in Palo Alto, and he'd played in several of Garcia's early bluegrass bands. But he'd always thought of himself as a writer -- probably a novelist -- and it was only in 1967 that he fulfilled his personal destiny, and enriched the Dead's. He's gone on to write several books of poetry, and is currently at work on a novel.

Robert Hunter turned 70 years old today, June 23rd, 2011.  Happy Birthday, Robert Hunter!
