BoomBox Announces Spring Tour

Featuring Producer/Engineer Russ Randolph and Producer/Vocalist/Guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux, BoomBox draws their inspiration from their hometown roots in Muscle Shoals, AL – an area known for inspiring the worlds most legendary recordings of the 60’s, 70’s 80’s and into the present. The powerhouse duo draws their inspiration from their hometown roots and is recognized for infusing elements of Motown, Folk, and Rock into an electronic music blender with heavy bass undertones and ethereal vocals for a dance party vibe that has fans coming out in drones.

Using only word of mouth buzz, BoomBox has built a strong national following with a history of packed performances around the country. Locally, the band boasts two sold out shows in Denver last November, as part of their annual urban electronic festival RE:Convergence, which took place at Cervantes.

BoomBox will be performing with special opening guests BLVD along the western slopes this spring in support of their latest release, downriverelectric, which is expected to hit the streets in advance of the Colorado tour.

Muscle Shoals Gives Birth to the BoomBox Sound

Nobody snuffed the Muscle Shoals candle - it just keeps getting brighter.

Once again, the otherwise understated and isolated town in Alabama finds itself in the limelight. Recognized for inspiring legendary recordings from the likes of Aretha Franklin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon,The Rolling Stones and Duane Allman, Muscle Shoals has played host to some of the most creative music in popular culture. Reports have recently surfaced in Rolling Stone Magazine that the platinum selling artists the Black Keys have recorded their forthcoming album in the area, leaving no doubt that a musical revival is imminent, and the locally born electronic duo BoomBox is leading the charge.

“I do believe that music is genetic—it’s a family thing. Whatever was magical about Muscle Shoals is still there.” Dan Auerbach, Black Keys– Paste Magazine

BoomBox was born in Muscle Shoals, AL. Not just figuratively, but literally. The dynamic duo grew up just a few short blocks from the famous “Muscle Shoals Sound Studio” where legend tells the most famous recordings in history have been inspired. As luck would have it, the two met in 2004 during a recording session, and haven’t looked back since. Since their short time together, BoomBox has become one of a few acts to come out of the area including Drive-By Truckers that are selling out venues coast to coast. (Wikipedia, 2009)

Featuring Producer/Engineer Russ Randolph and Producer/Vocalist/Guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux, BoomBox draws their inspiration from the roots of the area including elements of Motown, Folk and Rock and infuses it with modern elements of down tempo and funky house. Add in a top layer of soothing guitar and vocals with their signature psychedelia inspired poetry and the result is like nothing else on the music scene today. The concoction pays homage to the past while incorporating an infectious electronic sound that has young fans turning out to their shows in drones.

BoomBox will be releasing their sophomore album, downriverelectric, in early 2010. The album deliberately weaves a variety of samples into a musical landscape filled with soaring highs and soul shuttering low bass.

The backbone of the album was recorded using natural elements, drawing inspirations from the rhythm of the Tennessee River as well as snippets and samples of voices, the thumping of rocks as bass, and the shutter of the wheels on the road as they toured the country. At the same rate, downriverelectric also captures the musical memoirs of its hometown community in a new light. With the use of modern technology, the project skillfully drives the sounds of the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s into a dance frenzy of modern flavors. While the album took longer than expected, the final product foretells yet another groundbreaking release from within the Muscle Shoals community, worth recognition.

What’s yet to come from the Muscle Shoals music scene is hard to tell, but one thing is for certain, with acts like BoomBox infusing the rich lore of the area into their current sound, history is guaranteed to repeat itself.

BoomBox Post-Phish and New Year’s Eve

Its no surprise BoomBox is taking the country by storm with their unique brand of house infused rock n’ roll. The duo brilliantly blends the sophistication of live guitar and poetry while soulfully delivering lyrics and boogie-ready samples for a one-of-a-kind live performance. Their dedication to provide an experimental dance party within their live show setting is second to none. With two New Year’s celebrations scheduled nearly 1,000 miles apart, this year is no exception.

BoomBox will be performing the post-Phish celebration on Dec. 29th in Miami before heading up to their home stomping grounds of Muscle Shoals, Alabama on New Year’s Eve --- their first performance in the area in over a year.

Comprised of multi-talented producer/musicians Zion “Rock” Godchaux and Russ Randolph, the BoomBox project manifested in 2004 during a six-month recording session. With an instant connection to a similar style of music it didn’t take long for the pair to hit the road with a combined vision that makes up their signature sound today. Together this collective skillfully weaves over four decades of music into one spontaneous live track, embracing everything from Motown, to 70’s era funk, to the roots of gritty rock n’ roll creating a truly unique dance ready sound.

Since their first national tour the duo has sold thousands of copies of their independent release, Visions of Backbeat, and has performed dozens of sold-out venues around the country. BoomBox’s new album, downriverelectric, will be released January 2010.

The perfect choice for a post-Phish celebration, BoomBox will take the dance party well in to the wee hours of the morning in Miami at the White Room, less than one mile from the American Airlines Arena. The party starts at 10 PM and everyone 18 and older can join the fun.

24 hours and almost 1,000 miles later, BoomBox will return to their hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with a special New Year’s Eve celebration at the newly renovated Grand Shoals Theater. This special evening will not only mark their first area performance in over a year, it will pay tribute to all the local fans that helped launch the duo’s national career.

Tickets for both events are now on sale and more information can be found on the official BoomBox website at www.thisisboombox.com - Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets for both events in advance.

BoomBox: Fall Tour

What is BoomBox? Some would claim they’re an enthralling, sweaty heap of down tempo disco-hop. Others may say they're a special blend of Funktronic ‘n Blues. They prefer to just call it Rock ‘n Roll and leave the rest up to the listener.

Comprised of multi-talented producer/musicians Zion “Rock” Godchaux and Russ Randolph, the BoomBox project manifested in 2004 during a recording session. Instantly clicking, the two realized they together harnessed both the talent and drive to introduce a new, unequaled sound to the live music scene.

In an era of iterative button pushing, beat repeat and laptop DJs, repetitious sets and inability to consistently perform for an audience have unfortunately rendered some musicians/artists hopelessly obsolete. BoomBox counters this, solidifying their musical presence by keeping on their toes through live performances, feeding on the crowd’s energy and basing selections accordingly. Each track is inspired by the feel of the moment, providing the duo ample room for open improvisation every night.

When on stage, Godchaux and Randolph use a few devices for delivering melodious sound to captivated audiences. Godchaux equips himself with guitar and an assortment of pedals and sequencers as well as provides calm, soothing vocals. On the opposite side of the stage, Randolph contributes woozy synthesizer lines and handles the backing beats via drum sequencers and various programming. A true team, they usher out auditory gratification for eager fans who show up to be undoubtably swept away, immersed in the groove.

It seems no matter where or when they play, BoomBox both attracts and captures crowds, taking them on a dulcetly euphoric escapade. Regardless of the setting or at what point in tour, they perpetually execute the perfect intensity, leaving sweat drenched show-goers glowing with love hung expressions.

With minimal time to recover from an amazing and eventful summer that included stops at numerous venues and festivals all over the country including All Good, Wakarusa, Camp Bisco, 10KLF and EarthDance, BoomBox once again hits the road. This time serving an upcoming collection of intimate performances to select cities on the West Coast alongside top ranking DJ and producer, Ana Sia. Like her current tour mates, Sia too thrives on live performance, her shows a tangled mess of grimy low-end love that’s as beautifully filthy as it is mellifluous and honey smooth.

Energetic, captivating and exciting, the musical monster Godchaux and Randolph have created together is steadily growing. People are still hungry for good music they can connect with and the twosome shows no sign of letting up anytime remotely soon. It’s refreshing to hear a group who can not only produce an alluring and magnificent studio disc, but also has an appealing, straightforward approach to live music. While the band’s future is certainly not set in stone, in the mean time they continue to do what they do best: perform live.

BoomBox Cancels Eureka show due to death in family

Due to a passing of a family member, BoomBox has regretfully canceled their set for tonight’s show at the Nocturnum, in Eureka, CA to briefly return home to attend a funeral and spend time with family. However, because of the overwhelming support the group has received on the West Coast, performances in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego will remain scheduled as planned.

Godchaux explains, “I want to thank everyone for the support on this West Coast run. We are really honored to share what we all share together at shows.” He continues, “My family’s encouragement and your support led us to the decision to return back to California on Thursday (October 8th) to perform in San Francisco and finish the remainder of the tour.”

Fans planning on attending the show in Eureka will still be treated to a night of music from Ana Sia who has been touring with BoomBox on this West Coast tour and are encouraged to make the trip to San Francisco to see BoomBox perform on Thursday, October 8th at the Independent.

The band thanks everyone for their support and kind thoughts.
