Home Cookin' with the Motet

When I got the news that I could write a review for the Motet’s Best of their Halloween shows at my favorite indoor venue in the world, I jumped at the opportunity. Not only was it just their “best of” show, but it was the 7th Anniversary Grand Re-Opening Celebration for the venue that has demonstrated its appeal to the fans of music in many ways.

The Motet perform "The Best of Halloween"

We are very excited to announce that on January 22nd and 23rd The Motet will be performing "The Best of Halloween" at CERVANTES' MASTERPIECE BALLROOM'S Grand Re-Opening 7th Anniversary Party. For these shows we will be featuring the fantastic vocalist JEN DURKIN (Deep Bannana Blackout, Mickey Hart Band, Bernie Worell Band) and the slamming east coast horn duo of Sam Kininger and Ryan Zoidis (Soulive, Lettuce), aka "THE SHADY HORNS".  Get ready for these guys to blow the roof off the joint!  We are also extremely excited about the virtuosic guitarist DAN LEBOWITZ (ALO, magicgravy) coming in from San Francisco to join us for these two epic nights of great music!

And as this is somewhat of a reunion gig for us, don't be surprised to see our old friend and guitarist Ryan Jalbert (Brett Dennen Band) up there rocking out. Also, flying in direct from Portland Oregon will be vocalist exraordinaire Jans Ingber. And, per usual, we will have Motet regulars: Garrett Sayers on bass, Joey Porter on keys, Dave Watts on drums, Scott Messersmith on percussion, Gabe Mervine on trumpet, Kim Dawson on vocals, Matt Pitts on bari, and perhaps a few others yet to be named...

Yes folks! You heard it right, this will be a 13 member band including a four piece horn section, three vocalists, two guitars, and percussion. The concept, of course, will be for us to perform music by the artists of our past Halloween shows: Talking Heads, Tower of Power, Jamiroquai, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone, and Herbie Hancock. This is going to be a once in a lifetime band, so please get your tickets soon.

Now as a added bonus, MAGICGRAVY, the ever exciting trio of Dave, Dan, and Garrett will be opening both nights! Be ready for some mad-improv-soul-jazz insanity to warm your body up...

This will also be the grand re-opening of Cervantes. They are putting a lot energy into upgrading the P.A., the stage, the restrooms and overall appearance. So, please come support one of the best live music venues in America!!

Jason Hann: Balancing the Yin & Yang

The last two years for percussionist Jason Hann have been a roller coaster of musical endeavors.  His main project, the wildly popular String Cheese Incident, decided it was time to take an extended hiatus from performing due to some artistic conflicts within the group.  From the break, Hann and fellow Cheese drummer Michael Travis formed a dynamic jam-tronica duo called

PRAANG Returns To Cervantes for Two-Night Stint

photo by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Formed under a blanket of thick Colorado snow during the blizzard of 2006, PRAANG returns to Cervantes for a two night stand December 5th and 6th. Featuring Steve Kimock, Jason Hann and Michael Travis from EOTO/String Cheese Incident and Jamie Janover from ZILLA, PRAANG represents a new musical avenue for the four members to travel. Completely improvisational, spontaneous, and unrehearsed, the quartet's music reflects their fateful existence.

Originally scheduled to be a Kimock, Vega, White and Banyan gig one December night in 2006, plans were dashed as Kimock was the only member not stranded by an infamous blizzard. Making their way to Cervantes later that evening, Hann, Travis and Janover substituted for the stranded band members, and PRAANG was born. Mixing Kimock's blistering and masterful guitar work, Hann's perpetual and incessant groovin', 'Travis' and Janover's musical innovation, and Janover's flurries of hammer dulcimer and percussive embellishment, the quartet is a fresh and exciting project of intricate guitar leads and exotic rhythms.

Steve Kimock, known for his uncanny guitar prowess, leaves his musical mark through his many collaborations. From the Steve Kimock Band to KVMS to his recent work with Billy Goodman, Bob Weir (Ratdog), and Mickey Hart (Rhythm Devils and Mickey Hart Band), Kimock is a true working man's genre-bending guitarist. Jason Hann and Michael Travis, known primarily for work with String Cheese Incident and their present venture, EOTO, bring a new-groove/electronica/tribal/acid jazz aspect to the PRAANG project. From groovy slap bass to syncopated measures, the two provide the musical backbone to complement Kimock's melodic tapestries. Contributing additional innovative rhythms is Jamie Janover, a true pioneer on the musical scene. Maintaining a rigorous touring schedule with numerous projects and worldly travels, Janover's percussion skills are unmatched.

New Mastersounds Give Denver the Funk of its Life

When we Yanks think about England, what comes to mind? High tea? Mary Poppins? The Queen Mum? The Stamp Tax? What about gumbo? How about fur-lined bucket hats and matching full length mink coats and platform shoes with the goldfish in the bottom? No? Allow me to spot you three letters and that should be a hint at where I'm headed: "U-N-K."

Colorado Groovin': Perpetual Groove in Denver

Somewhere between space funk and carnival time resides the music of Georgia-based jamband, Perpetual Groove.  The current lineup of Brock Butler (guitar/vocals), Adam Perry (bass), Albert Suttle (drums), and Matt McDonald (keys/vocals) exploded onto the live music scene in 2001 and have since gained quite a devoted following.  Electrifying performances at festivals such as Wakarusa

Banyan Evolves in Denver

It's a wet and cold Friday Night in Denver Colorado. Outside the sleet it turning to snow and inside Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom the stage is melting into the eclectic sounds and sights of Banyan. The west coast based Banyan was created by Stephen Perkins, the long-time drummer of Jane's Addiction.
