North Mississippi Allstars & Hill Country Revue: A Family Affair at the Fox

It may have been a weeknight, but I saw that as no reason to stay in.  Anytime of any day or night is a good time for rock and roll, but last Thursday was a particularly noteworthy occasion.  One of the most exciting guitarists around was in town at the Fox Theatre, and I wasn't about to miss him.  I'm talking about Luther Dickinson, shredder-extraordinaire of the North Mississippi Allstars, and more recently, of a little side project that

The Wailers | Fox Theater | 1/10/2009

They started in a Jamaican town originally established to house refugees of an earthquake. Today they are the most influential reggae act of the 21st century, responsible for shaking up the scene with their conscious-raising sound.

Story Time with The Wood Brothers & Joe Pug

It's a Friday night, and I'm back at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO.  The moon overhead is as big as it'll be for the next 8 years or so.  For the beginning of the weekend it's kind of slow, maybe because it's seriously cold outside.  The mood inside seems appropriately low key as well, featuring only three performers in total.  Joe Pug is on stage now, and the Boulder born and raised Wood Brothers

Matisyahu & Friends-It doesn't have to be About the Religion to Appreciate the Music

Known for his hip-hop and reggae style, Jewish musician Matisyahu's sold out show Sunday night at Boulder's Fox Theatre proved to have attracted far beyond the religious folk of his faith. While a considerable amount of Jewish families with women in their head dresses and men in their customary yarmulke could be spotted from among the crowd, the greater majority of the audience showed to be just as diverse as the musical genres in performance.

deadmau5 Kills at the Fox

Usually, I'm a rock and roll fan.  Usually.  But I like to mix it up now and then, see something I don't usually get the opportunity to see, hear something I haven't heard before.  The club scene is rarely my scene, but last Wednesday night, I find myself in the middle of a DJ show at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO.  To me, this is like being on another planet.  It's not the music really, although there is something futuristic and otherworldly about electronica that I find appealing, it's the people who make m

Four Sushi Restaurants and the Toubab Krewe

For lovers of atypical instrumental rock derivatives, there may be no sweeter words than Toubab Krewe.  What's a Toubab Krewe, you ask?  Good question!  For starters, Toubab Krewe is a band, five guys who make some of the grooviest music you've ever (or maybe never) heard.  The only term that really sticks with any consistency is instrumental, since, as the word implies, they only play instruments sans vocals.  Other than that, they ar

Backstage at the Fox Theater with BoomBox

Last weekend, the electrofunk duo BoomBox stopped by the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO to dish out their unique brand of dance worthy club rock to a packed house of Saturday night revelers.  Before the show, Grateful Web's Sam Holloway had an opportunity to go backstage and catch up with Zion and Russ about life on the road, the band's next album, and the evolution of

BoomBox Comes Back To Boulder

It was another typical Saturday night in Boulder, Colorado.  University Hill was crawling with weekend revelers, frat boys wearing their hats like idiots, freshmen trolling for house parties where no one checks ID, and throngs of music fans smoking cigarettes and talking it up outside the Fox Theatre.  The crowd outside the Fox was a pretty good cross-section of Boulder society - a mix of tie-dye, glow sticks and designer jeans.  Inside the

Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers get up-close & personal in Boulder

It's a fucked up world out there, and lately it seems to be getting worse by the day. The economy is crashing, the war seems never-ending, and Washington D.C. seems as silly and out of touch as ever. Maybe I'm more obsessive than most, more indignant too perhaps, but if you're like me, I recommend a heavy dose of lighthearted tunes to put you in a better state of mind. Everybody needs to escape occasionally, and music has always been a means to do so.

The New Mastersounds Funk up the Fox Theater | 8/28/08

I'm blessed to have a solid group of friends who love live music, generally as much as me. There is little in life I find more enjoyable than watching close friends I've taken to a new group or artist turn and give me that look of excitement and say "Wow, you were right! These guys are amazing!" This look and this line happened more than a handful of times at the latest New Mastersounds show at the Fox Theater up on the good old Hill in Boulder, CO.
