AM Taxi's Debut Album "We Don't Stand A Chance" Out Now

Gearing up for summer, AM Taxi is pumped to announce that their Virgin Records debut is available today! The band is part of iTunes’ ‘Next Big Thing’ and will be doing coast-to-coast dates through the summer via Warped Tour, making the Chicago-based band one of few to be invited on the nation-wide run prior to releasing an album. The band will also be in their hometown of Chicago performing at the Q101, Rolling Stone, and Beat Kitchen. More info below.
AM Taxi have been honing their live chops, recently finishing spring dates with Spill Canvas while their MySpace ‘Introducing’ profile debuted May 9th on the homepage of MySpace.com. You can watch the band’s fresh video for “Fed Up". “Our motto in the studio was, ‘If it ain’t broke, break it,’” explains frontman Adam Krier about recording We Don’t Stand A Chance. “We’d try things from every possible angle.”Recorded in Austin TX, AM Taxi’s polished first record features influences ranging from The Clash to Sublime to The Boss mixed with the group’s own contemporary punk-rock infusions and was produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Patty Griffin, Alberta Cross).
“We weren’t so interested in making a record that sounded current, as we were something that could be classic,” Krier says.

MARIO PAVONE'S ORANGE DOUBLE TENOR At Cornelia Street Cafe

Playscape Recordings is proud to announce the forthcoming world premiere of bassist/composer Mario Pavone's Arc Suite t/pi t/po, a suite of original compositions commissioned by chamber music America's 2009 new jazz works: commissioning and ensemble development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Pavone wrote the music for his long standing sextet, orange double tenor, which will perform the work live for the first time on june 8+9th at the Cornelia Street Café, before heading into the recording studio on june 10+11th.

The subsequent recording, also titled arc suite t/pi t/po, will be released by playscape recordings in November to coincide with Pavone's 70th birthday and 45th year in music. Orange Double Tenor features Tony Malaby and Jimmy Greene (saxophones), Dave Ballou (trumpet), Peter Madsen (piano), and Gerald Cleaver, (drums). Also part of this project are Steven Bernstein and Michael Musillami who, along with Pavone and Ballou, each arranged individual movements within the suite.

"I have reflected on the 1960's ... a time of incredible change and transformation ... and on being there and taking in not just the musicality of Trane, Cecil, Ornette, Mingus and Monk, but the physical prescence of these giants and the sociopolitical issues their work addressed. I look to re-envision and re-interpret in today's idiom, and in my compositional systems, the feeling, ethos and energy of that time and those players."

Surprise Me Mr. Davis | Summer Dates & 'Bridge Sessions' Segment

Surprise Me Mr. Davis have announced a handful of summer tour dates. The five piece rock band, featuring Nathan Moore, Brad Barr, Marco Benevento, Marc Friedman and Andrew Barr, will come together from their homes in Montreal, Brooklyn and the Shenandoah Valley for ten shows. They'll be supporting their latest EP release, That Man Eats Morning For Breakfast.

The Hidden Track blog noted in a recent live review: "Someone mentioned that it felt like seeing The Band in some club in 1970, and that seemed just about right--there is such skillful songsmithing, such virtuosity in performance, such joy and such a tortured voice in the quintet. The music glows and rolls and speaks as the greatest Americana does of all the back roads and small towns and small rooms in big cities, all the confused relationships, unrequited love and brotherly love. I can't help thinking, whenever Nathan Moore begins some political rant bookended by some semi-comical, semi-forlorn personal ramble, that this is what Walt Whitman would be doing if he were still alive." Jambase stated: "Surprise Me Mr. Davis needs to be recognized as one of the top bands in the live music scene; an appointment that is far overdue and richly deserved."

Upcoming Surprise Me Mr. Davis tour dates are:

June 24 | Tractor Tavern | Seattle, WA (w/ Marco Benevento Trio)
June 25 | Doug Fir Lounge | Portland, OR (w/ Marco Benevento Trio)
June 26 | Axe & Fiddle | Cottage Grove, OR (w/ Marco Benevento Trio)
July 1 | High Sierra | Quincy, CA
July 3 | High Sierra | Quincy, CA
July 6 | Cafe Du Nord | San Francisco, CA
July 7 | Moe's Alley | Santa Cruz, CA
August 19 | Fox Theater | Boulder, CO
August 20 | Three 20 South | Breckenridge, CO
August 21 | Newhoma Music Festival | Florissant, CO

Watch Surprise Me Mr. Davis perform an a-capella rendition the Nathan Moore song "Tombstone" on the Williamsburg Bridge shortly before they took the stage for a headline show in April at New York City's Mercury Lounge. The piece was filmed as a segment for "The Bridge Sessions."

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe at the Fox Theatre

Like a Super Nova burning bright in the night sky comes Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe.  Based out of San Diego, KDTU began its journey in 1998 after bandleader Karl Denson decided to change gears five years after he’d help create The Greyboy Allstars. GBA had proven themselves as the ultimate party band, spreading their “West Coast Boogaloo” style all over the world, making “Jazz” a dance term once again. Karl set out to take this formula to the next level by putting more emphasis on vocals and adding some funk, r&b and hip hop elements. It turned out to be a winning combination which set KDTU on the top of the heap in the touring world from 1999 through 2005. In 2005 Karl decided to get back to his roots and work in a smaller jazzier setting.  During 2006 and 2007 Karl led KD3, a trio configuration featuring Sax, Organ and Drums. This led to the 2007 release of KD3’s  “Lunar Orbit”, an album which was a great critical success. In 2008, Karl rejoined his former boss Lenny Kravitz and spent the year country hopping through Europe and North America. In 2009 Karl went back into the studio and conjured up what is being hailed as the most soulful KDTU adventure yet, “Brother’s Keeper” which was released Sept 15th, 2009.
