Girl Talk Rings In The New Year With Biggest House Party Of The Decade

To celebrate the end of the decade and New Year’s Eve, Girl Talk threw one of the largest and craziest house parties the world has seen last week in Chicago. As an incredible surprise to the entire 4500-capacity audience at the Congress Theater, Girl Talk literally had a two-story, five-room HOUSE built on stage, including drywall, staircase, fake wooden floor and impeccable detail! What took months and months to plan, 4+ solid days and 21+ crewmembers to build, was a huge undertaking and undeniably, impressive success appreciated by all.

Complete with a kitchen that included a refrigerator with a note and photo stuck on the door, dinner table with fruit bowl, blender and more, hutch filled with china and glassware, fireplace, couch, coffee table, rug, picture frames and more in the living room, a kid's room with a bed, desk, computer and mouse, pencil jar, trophy, Snoop Dogg poster, and a bathroom with a toilet, sink, shower and curtain, plus fake trees in the yard, and the table he uses to perform presented as a large rock, the detail and thought that went into each element was flawless. The lights constructed on the outside and inside of the house, including an LCD curtain surrounding the house to make it look like the night sky, and all over the venue, added to the insanity. When the house was first presented to the audience, all the lights that were on included a few lamps inside each room, however, as the night neared midnight, the house counted down from 9 to 0, and then once midnight hit, the house came alive as lights all over the house, inside and out, shown bright. This was the first of many secrets revealed throughout the show. Others include the kitchen floor which eventually lit up turning into a disco dance floor, the entire bathroom could strobe any color, the computer in the kid’s room had an LED light attached to it, and huge amounts of light came out of the fireplace. And that’s just inside the house! There were special lights strategically hidden all over the venue that were active and radiant throughout the night.

To match the extravagance of the house and excitement of the whole night, Girl Talk played his longest set in history! The energy was outstanding! All of these aspects combined to form a truly over-the-top, electrifying night and an especially invigorating way to kick off 2010!

The entire construction process building up to the show and the actual show itself was documented on multiple HD cameras. A short film about this is being put together by Girl Talk and crew. Announcements regarding the film will be released in the coming weeks.

New York Guitar Festival: 10th Anniversary Concerts

No instrument has spoken in more voices to more people than the guitar, and over the past decade no festival has sought out the modulations in those voices and the range of the guitar's cultural expressions than the New York Guitar Festival.

Following its success since 1999 (with rave reviews in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Jazz Times as well as sister festivals in Urbana, Illinois and Adelaide Australia), the New York Guitar Festival announces its tenth season of concert performances, January 8 though February 4, 2010.

The festival boasts over 30 exceptional guitarists of jazz, classical, rock, traditional, and avant garde styles. Participating venues include Merkin Concert Hall, The 92nd Street Y, The World Financial Center's Winter Garden, Le Poisson Rouge and Barbes. Concerts range from an all-day Guitar Marathon interpreting the music of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries, (featuring, among other internationally-famous musicians, the Brazilian Guitar Quartet, Paul O'Dette, Ana Vidovic, Eliot Fisk, Paul Galbraith and Nigel North) to the Hindustani slide guitar music of Debashish Bhattacharya.

The festival also has a history of commissioning remarkable original works, and the 2010 season breaks yet more new ground by presenting ten classic silent films (seven by Chaplin, one by Keaton and two by Harry Smith) accompanied by original scores performed live by a spectacularly rich and varied coterie of guitarists: Gyan Riley, Alex de Grassi, Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver), Steve Kimock, James Blackshaw, Marc Ribot, David Bromberg and the members of Chicha Libre.

The New York Guitar Festival, a not-for-profit arts organization, was founded in 1999 by musician and producer David Spelman, who serves as its Artistic Director. The Festival's goal is to broaden the public's appreciation for the guitar by fostering emerging talent, supporting innovative collaborations among outstanding artists, and commissioning new works. In addition to producing eclectic concerts and radio broadcasts, its Guitar Harvest series of recordings supports outreach programs in New York City public schools.

Gyan Riley is an equally strong presence in the worlds of classical guitar and contemporary music. Railroad Earth: New Years and New Tunes

After a largely successful fall tour, Railroad Earth is wrapping up a momentous 2009 with performances on both coasts before heading to the studio for their forthcoming album. The six-piece Americana outfit is scheduled for a short east coast run before heading to the Pacific Northwest for a four-night New Years Eve Bash. A bittersweet tour, the New Years run will also mark the final show for stand-up bass player Johnny Grubb.

Known for well-crafted lyrics, outstanding musicianship and an un-matched dedication to their live performance, Railroad Earth is a musical anomaly. Not quite rock n’ roll and not quite Bluegrass; the band captures the flavor of American history by rolling intriguing narratives into traditional instrumentation. The end result is a rootsy, bouncy, sing-along that has fans clamoring for more.

Mixing an unlikely blend of instruments to make up their well-traveled sound, the project features Todd Sheaffer (Lead vocals, acoustic guitars), Tim Carbone (Violin, vocals), John Skehan (Mandolin, vocals), Andy Goessling (Acoustic guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones and vocals), Carey Harmon (Drums, hand percussion, vocals) and Johnny Grubb (Upright bass).

Railroad Earth’s most successful year to date, the band has graced the stages at some of the country’s most prestigious festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rothbury and the 10,000 Lakes Festival. And this past September, Railroad Earth performed for the first time at the legendary amphitheater, Red Rocks in Morrison, CO. In their relatively short tenure, the band has released five critically acclaimed albums and amassed an impressive national following with sold-out shows from coast-to-coast.

Their last collective tour of 2009, the New Years performance will mark the final show with long-time bass player and friend, Johnny Grubb, who recently resigned from the project. With numerous sell-out performances around the country, the final performances with Grubb are not to be missed. The band will be taking the first part of 2010 to focus on the creation and release of their sixth album before hitting the road again in the summer.

BoomBox Post-Phish and New Year’s Eve

Its no surprise BoomBox is taking the country by storm with their unique brand of house infused rock n’ roll. The duo brilliantly blends the sophistication of live guitar and poetry while soulfully delivering lyrics and boogie-ready samples for a one-of-a-kind live performance. Their dedication to provide an experimental dance party within their live show setting is second to none. With two New Year’s celebrations scheduled nearly 1,000 miles apart, this year is no exception.

BoomBox will be performing the post-Phish celebration on Dec. 29th in Miami before heading up to their home stomping grounds of Muscle Shoals, Alabama on New Year’s Eve --- their first performance in the area in over a year.

Comprised of multi-talented producer/musicians Zion “Rock” Godchaux and Russ Randolph, the BoomBox project manifested in 2004 during a six-month recording session. With an instant connection to a similar style of music it didn’t take long for the pair to hit the road with a combined vision that makes up their signature sound today. Together this collective skillfully weaves over four decades of music into one spontaneous live track, embracing everything from Motown, to 70’s era funk, to the roots of gritty rock n’ roll creating a truly unique dance ready sound.

Since their first national tour the duo has sold thousands of copies of their independent release, Visions of Backbeat, and has performed dozens of sold-out venues around the country. BoomBox’s new album, downriverelectric, will be released January 2010.

The perfect choice for a post-Phish celebration, BoomBox will take the dance party well in to the wee hours of the morning in Miami at the White Room, less than one mile from the American Airlines Arena. The party starts at 10 PM and everyone 18 and older can join the fun.

24 hours and almost 1,000 miles later, BoomBox will return to their hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with a special New Year’s Eve celebration at the newly renovated Grand Shoals Theater. This special evening will not only mark their first area performance in over a year, it will pay tribute to all the local fans that helped launch the duo’s national career.

Tickets for both events are now on sale and more information can be found on the official BoomBox website at www.thisisboombox.com - Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets for both events in advance.

Marley's Ghost taps Cowboy Jack Clement for new CD, 'Ghost Town'

Marley’s Ghost, cited by Paste magazine as “(having) earned cult-band status over 20 years of spirited musicianship, multi-part harmonies and irreverent humor,” will return from a three-year absence from recording with a new album, Ghost Town, due out February 23, 2010 on Sage Arts Records. The new album was produced by Cowboy Jack Clement, in whose Nashville home studio it was recorded. The cover was painted by acclaimed American watercolorist William Matthews.

The album follows Marley’s Ghost’s 2006 album Spooked, which was produced by Van Dyke Parks and featured a cover by R. Crumb. Of Spooked, Clement remarked, “The band’s eighth full-length in 20 years glides with deadpan sincerity through sea chanteys, perverted mountain gospel, country-rock, vintage pre-WWII pop, Jazz Age vamps, Dylan, western campfire songs, and a rib-tickling salute to ‘the French Elvis,’ Johnny Hallyday. Brilliantly sung and played, Spooked is a heady, subversive treat.”

The latest development in the band’s recording career may prove to be the crucial link for Marley’s Ghost. Clement, the country music cornerstone whose career entwined with those of Jerry Lee Lewis, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and so many others, is the beloved dean of Nashville producers, and the presence of Marley’s Ghost in his studio earned the band its first Music Row buzz.

“Working with Jack is standing in the front door looking out into the world with the whole house of rock ’n’ roll and country music behind you,” says Marley’s Ghost bassist and singer Dan Wheetman. “Jack is steeped in the Sun Records ideals of music. The technical side is important but takes a backseat to the ‘bang,’ the performance with heart and energy.”

“It’s easy to think of Jack as the guy who wrote hits for Cash at Sun Records and recorded Charley Pride in the ’70s, but you know, he has a platinum album with U2,” he adds, referring to a portion of Rattle and Hum that Clement oversaw.

“Marley’s Ghost is very experienced, versatile and best of all, open-minded, and a fun bunch of guys,” says Clement. “I prefer to play with a great band rather than a bunch of great session players. And they are a great band. They understand that we are all in the fun business and if we’re not having fun, we’re not doing our jobs. And they can play just about anything they want to. Even polkas. I ain’t got ’em to do one yet, but I will.”

After more than 20 years of making music together— recording nine albums and performing thousands of shows around the country — Marley’s Ghost remains one of the best-kept secrets in the music world, an untapped natural resource waiting to be discovered.

“Our criteria,” says the band’s guitarist, Mike Phelan, “has always been: bring it, let’s run it. It’s not about genre or style.” This is one band that knows all the songs from both The Harder They Come soundtrack and Ralph Stanley’s Cry From the Cross. Or as Paste puts it, "a decidedly unusual band, as capable of reanimating Appalachian folk songs as they are traditional Celtic fare, honky tonk and reggae.”

The most important ingredients in the Marley’s Ghost musical brew are the characters in the band. The five multi-instrumentalists boast distinctive musical personalities that couldn’t be less alike.

Dan Wheetman is a veteran of the ’60s Simi Valley, Calif. teen rock group the Humane Society, and, as a member of ’70s country-rockers Liberty, toured for years with John Denver and Steve Martin. Jon Wilcox, mandolinist and vocalist, used to trudge around the country as a solo artist. Mike Phelan, like Wheetman and Wilcox a prolific songwriter, can tear your heart out with a soul tune, put a romantic lilt into an Irish folk tune or blast molten lead guitar licks through the heart of a blues. Innovative pedal steel guitarist Ed Littlefield, Jr., spent years performing C&W in rugged roadhouses for loggers across the Pacific Northwest, and plays a fierce fiddle and bagpipes. And Jerry Fletcher, the band’s secret weapon and unofficial fifth Ghost, became “certified” in 2006, bringing his eclectic music skills (drums, keys, accordion and vocal arranging) to bear full-time.

Together they are a unique amalgam of their respective backgrounds, personal proclivities and musical abilities — a blend honed to a seamless collaboration over the many miles they have traveled together down the road.

“I call it ’bang,’” says Clement in summation. “It’s got bang. The band’s got some bang to it.”

Indie Folk-Rock Singer-Songwriter Collin Herring To Release New Album OCHO Today

Fort Worth-born singer-songwriter-guitarist Collin Herring will release today, Tuesday, November 17, his fourth distinctive album of originals that defy easy categorization, the sophisticated and haunting OCHO: eight songs with essences of rock, folk-rock and country in both the lyrics and instrumentation and subtle surprises in each.

Herring and band play a series of shows to introduce the album to longtime fans and new listeners, starting with an in-store performance at Austin’s Waterloo Records & Video on the day of release.

From the first track to the last — including “Young Ones,” “Seemed to Be,” “Little Aches” and “Nothing’s Wrong” — Herring engages audience attention with the twang of his vocals, the mix of contemporary and traditional in electric and steel guitars, lyrics that lament love with modern insight rather than tears, and wry twists that add texture and mystery.

“I wanted it to sound like I’m just sitting in my living room,” says Herring about OCHO. “I wanted something haunting and organic. It’s not country. It’s not rock ’n’ roll. It’s just Collin Herring. It’s music the way I wrote it.”

On the album with Herring, who moved to Austin a year ago, are Centro-matic’s Will Johnson (backup vocals, guitar), Monahans members Roberto Sanchez (percussion) and Britton Beisenherz (bass), and Keith Hanna (bass) — and, as he’s done on his son’s previous three records, Herring’s father, Ben Roi Herring, contributed pedal steel, keyboards and harmony vocals. It was tracked at Beisenherz’s Ramble Creek Studio in Austin and produced by Johnson.

Herring’s first three albums — AVOIDING THE CIRCUS (2002), THE OTHER SIDE OF KINDNESS (2005) and PAST LIFE CRASHING (2008) — earned awards and comparison to a number of other indie genre-benders including Alejandro Escovedo and Drive-By Truckers.
