The Joy of Makeup Sex, with Phish

Have you ever had ‘make-up sex?’And I mean the ‘grown-up’ kind – full of the peaks and valleys of intimate knowledge of the other, with an understanding of the significance of the recent pasts’ dissonance… It’s sex with the knowledge that one nearly lost this person, and is lucky to have retrieved their relationship from the brink. Sex with someone you LOVE - or maybe ‘loved’ in the past. Sex that’s like physical history in action and re-action - with all the emotional lights left on.

Phish: Red Rocks Amphitheater | 8/2/09

I saw my first Phish show at the Hampton Coliseum in 1995 when I was 16 years old.  I had such a great time that I lied to my parents in order to go see them again at Hershey Park a few days later.  At the time, I knew nothing about Phish;  I didn’t know any of its songs, any of its members names, or that the drummer wore a dress and played a vacuum.  I just knew that when I saw that first show at the Spaceship in ‘95 it was filled with so much positive energy, I wanted to continue being a part of it.

Phamily Reunion: Music, Camping, Vending Options for PHISH ticket holders

eotoIn just three short weeks, PHISH will make their triumphant return to Red Rocks in Morrison, CO for their first performance in 13 years at the legendary amphitheater. The band was banned in 1996 after numerous local complaints about illegal camping and unquestionable behavior of the fans in the small community of Morrison. Flash forward to 2009, where local organizers have put together an alternative to illegal camping by securing a private campground with transportation and late night music included in the ticket price.

The Phamily Reunion, which will coincide all four nights of PHISH at Red Rocks, has a solution for everyone. Ticket holders and those who weren’t lucky enough to get tickets to see PHISH, are all invited to join the all-night party taking place in serene Idaho Springs, CO. After brisk initial ticket sales in 4-day camping passes, event organizers have just released one-day passes to the event, scheduled to go on sale on Thursday, July 9th 2009.

The four-day celebration has already penned an amazing line-up of national acts including The New Mastersounds, EOTO and the “glitch goddess” Ana Sia among five new regional additions to the lineup including: Mama’s Cookin’, Stanky Pockets, Chris Webb Band, Seismic Shift and J Wail Vs. Agobi Nick. More surprises are to come and tickets are going fast, making for great anticipation of the four-day camping and music event in the beautiful Colorado Front Range July 30 through August 2. Day shows at the campground will warm the dancing feet and late-night shows will keep the festivities rolling into the night. To top it off, the festival offers the opportunity to camp under the Colorado stars, whitewater raft, fish, hike, horseback ride and soak in the hot springs.

Phish Close Tour at Alpine Valley

Going back to my high school days growing up in Iowa, I specifically remember the first time I heard Phish.  I was with a group of friends (guys I am still in touch with today) riding around on a hot summer day on our way to what had become almost a daily sand volleyball session.  A buddy popped in the Picture of Nectar CD and told us we were in for a real musical treat.  Some band from the East with a simple but oddly spelled name.

Phamily Reunion: Special Event to Coincide with Phish at Red Rocks

Fans that did not score tickets to Phish at Red Rocks Amphitheatre should worry not; there just happens to be a four-day camping and music festival a few short miles away on a private ranch. For those that did score tickets, The Phamily Reunion Festival offers what Red Rocks cannot: camping and a safe ride to and from the festival to each Phish show. Set for July 30 through August 2 on the beautiful Van Eden Ranch in Idaho Springs, the good souls that love Phish, live music, camping, hiking, biking, hot springs and much more, will come together for a special string of days, all set to the good vibes of the Colorado Rockies.

hahnWith an already heavy-hitting lineup including The New Mastersounds, EOTO, The Heavy Pets, Juno What?!, LYNX & Janover, Ana Sia, YAMN and others, the festival promises to be big enough to stand on its own without Phish coming to town. With rumors surfacing after the 1996 Phish shows at Red Rocks about the band being banned because of an infiltration of campers in Morrison, CO, The Phamily Reunion is the perfect spot for one of the most coveted aspects of a Phish tour: community. And who knows, campers may just score the ticket they were looking for on the grounds of the ranch.

With four-day event passes available and buses running back and forth all day from the campgrounds to Red Rocks, it’s the ultimate and safest option. Add to that the chance to fish, hike, whitewater raft, gamble, soak in the hot springs, and horseback ride, The Phamily Reunion makes for perhaps the best all-around experience for both Coloradans and those visiting. Before heading to the lot at Red Rocks, campers can get their dancing feet warmed up to live music, only to be treated to late-night DJs and bands from Colorado and coast-to-coast.

Headlining the festival are The New Mastersounds, a funk, soul, jazz and rock quartet hailing from across the pond in England. It’s a true privilege to have such a pioneering act in the “new funk” movement in the Front Range of Colorado. From Colorado are slated both EOTO and Juno What?!, the former being a cutting-edge electro/improvisational duo, comprised of the rhythm section of The String Cheese Incident. Likewise, Juno What?! is a new project to come of the highly touted Colorado group The Motet, which has a passionate fan base in and around Colorado. Juno What?! brings back the eighties with a new look, combining fresh funk with quasi-disco undertones. The Heavy Pets are one of the hottest, up-and-coming jam bands on the circuit, all the way from Florida. Ana Sia is a psychedelic hip-hop DJ from San Francisco that drops huge beats, while the hip-hop, beat-boxing and innovative percussion of LYNX & Janover are not to be forgotten. More artists are to be announced, so stay tuned.

Fans won’t want to miss this epic weekend on the grounds of the Van Eden Ranch, where what is not being offered at Red Rocks is more than possible at The Phamily Reunion.

State of the Scene: Where Have All the Good Bands Gone?

Festival season!  I love it, and it is almost upon us.  After viewing the initial lineups for some of the big music festivals I couldn't help but notice the large number of indie rock bands that are sneaking their way into what are usually very jam-heavy celebrations.
