STS9 Release AXE THE CABLES Today on 1320 Records

In December of 2009, STS9 sat down in Denver, Colorado in one of America's most pristine modern opera houses to create "Axe The Cables... An Evening of STS9." What this night encompasses is one of the most flawless evenings of STS9 music in the band's decade plus history.  The entire show was played, for the most part, sans all "electric" gear including the common stage instrumentation of laptops and samplers that fans have grown accustomed to as the band's sound has evolved. To say the event was a hit is an understatement.  It was a night legends are made of...so much so that the band has decided to re-mix and re-master this into one massive release on their ever-exploding indie record label, 1320 Records.

Axe the Cables is available now exclusively through 1320 Records and iTunes.

1320 Records to Release John Hughes' RESET THE WAREHOUSE May 18th

STS9's boutique record label, 1320 Records, proudly presents Reset the Warehouse, the new studio release from John Hughes (May 18th, 2010 / 1320 Records).  A new recording studio, a new record label, and a new record allow John Hughes to step out from the familiar surroundings of Hefty Records, the label he founded in 1996, to strengthen his creative partnership with 1320 Records.

Though Hughes has collaborated with label-founders STS9 for years, this marks his first official release on 1320-an alliance long in the making, given both parties' shared mission of creating and supporting new music under artist-run labels.  Like Hefty, 1320 is an independent, musician-run collective that stresses cooperation between the artist and label.

According to Hughes, "Working with 1320 affords [him] the freedom to focus entirely on the music and the live performances in support of the record."

And, STS9 adds about Hefty, "few contemporary American labels have had as much influence on [the band]. We are extremely honored and excited to be apart of the 'Reset' release."

Hughes has recorded and released over a dozen albums under various aliases and groups like Slicker, Brood, Some Water and Sun, and Bill Ding, as well as under his own name.  His latest creation, Reset the Warehouse, represents the prime selections from a productive period of meticulous tracking and experimentation at his HFT Studio, located outside of Chicago.

Working with a team of veteran musicians and trusted collaborators, Hughes has assembled a cohesive union of styles and recording techniques, resulting in a record that explores uncharted directions while remaining rooted in sounds and beats that a listener may only describe as "classic."

As Hughes explains, "I wanted this recording to have a live, gritty sound, so I took it outside of the computer as much as I could. It was mixed through a board to tape, and the synths are all analog. Within the context of an electronic record, the live performances also help give it a warm, organic feel."

When it came time to edit and mix the tracks, Hughes looked to vibraphonist Rick Embach, who was involved in the sessions from the earliest stages, as well as his old friend Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv.  Hughes brought his recording sessions to Eustis' studio in Chicago, and together they mixed the tracks thorough an analog mixing board and then to two-track tape, giving the album the finishing touches and appropriate analog "glue" it required.

Visit here to view the entire supporting cast of Reset the Warehouse.

The Reset the Warehouse track list is as follows:

1.  A Reflection of the Times

2.  Waukee Wallop

3.  Another One

4.  Reset The Warehouse

5.  Pterodactyl Piano Bar

6.  Little Dot in the Sky

7.  Done Everything

8.  Moan Pop Asheesh

9.  Witchfinger

10.  You Don't Love Me

11.  Wow, I Think I Love You

12.  Naphtha Jets

As his work in the studio continues to evolve, and interest in his music continues to soar, John Hughes takes to the road this summer with label mates STS9, in support of Reset the Warehouse.  Hughes will perform this August and September with STS9 at select events in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and at the infamous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.

STS9 Release New Single from AD EXPLORATA

A family member of ours has a shortwave radio that we have all been messing around with. We had been using it for sound effects and noises when one day it was left on in the studio. Keyboardist David Phipps’ daughter Aya was playing around with the dials when all of a sudden it stopped on this voice on the super low frequencies of the spectrum. It was a woman’s voice, artificial we later found out, counting off numbers in a very clear and concise way. We became obsessed with what we had heard and for weeks we sat behind the dials trying to find more voices.

There was only one more to be found, the voice we sampled for the beginning of the song “Central”. After a bit of research, we found that these were numbers stations, thought to be coded messages various governments use to send correspondence to spy’s overseas. This of course isn’t publicly acknowledged by any government, even though in 2001 the United States tried the Cuban Five for spying using information they supposedly received and decoded by broadcast from a Cuban numbers station.

STS9 has always been fascinated by numbers; finding this transmission captured our imagination so much that we had to see if there was something more to what we had found. Immediately we enlisted the skills of a crypto-hacker friend of ours to see if she could find any relevance to the sequence we had recorded. When she ran the numbers as coordinates corresponding to a map of military bases in California, she came up with an exact location in Big Sur. We immediately went to check it out and sure enough there was a trail about 10 miles back off of Nacimiento Road, just south of the park that led to this old abandoned bunker type structure. It was crazy. We were all looking at each other in disbelief but there we were. We crawled through a hole at the bottom of the fence and walked inside. There we found a rusted metal box that had a few pictures, documents, patches, passports, and a knife in it. The first picture was of a document from Allen Dulles to J. Edgar Hoover on brainwashing. The second was of two men standing over a map of the Middle East. That image became the cover of our first single “Atlas,” off the upcoming release Ad Explorata. One of the patches we found was the most intriguing of our finds. It had this physically impossible symbol on it that looked futuristic next to all of the older documents. It’s the symbol we’ll lay over top of every image you will see for the album. In doing some research, we later found an old book of ‘black ops’ military patches at the Prelinger Library that had a brief description of this patch. It was thought to be for a secret unit that first used satellites to gather SIGINT (signal intelligence) from other countries during the Cold War. The story is that this team actually gathered signals from another civilization in our galaxy. Their motto was ‘Ad Explorata, Forward into the Unexplored.’

We’re not ones for conspiracies but sometimes the truth is stranger than anything we could imagine. With this, we present to you STS9’s newest studio release Ad Explorata due out November of 2009, inspired by the idea that there is always more to be discovered, manifested by the belief that you can always push towards the unknown and unexplored, and created by the will and desire for constant artistic evolution, expression and change.

STS9 is on the road this summer for a short list of big plays.  In addition to some high profile festival stops - including Lollapalooza, ROTHBURY, Summerfest and Austin City Limits - STS9 will host some huge events in Colorado and Atlanta this summer. Both events promise STS9 and many special guests performing multiple shows at a variety of local area venues.

The "Day Out of Time" celebration in Colorado, happening July 23-24-25, is a three day musical experience featuring twenty different musical acts in a half dozen Denver-area venues. Artists such as Pretty Lights, Pnuma Trio, Telepath, Daedelus, The Album Leaf, Nosaj Thing & Lipp Service featuring Eliot Lipp and members of Pnuma Trio, Flying Lotus, and others will join STS9 for shows at Denver's Fillmore Auditorium on Friday, July 24th and at the world famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Saturday, July 25th (The Day Out Of Time).  The weekend launches on Thursday, July 23rd at a pre-weekend gathering at the Ogden Theatre with Bonobo (Live) and Big Gigantic, and after-parties to be announced throughout the weekend featuring international superstars and numerous 1320 Records artists. For additional details regarding the "Day Out of Time" celebration visit www.sts9.com.

Then in August, STS9's highly anticipated return to Atlanta promises to be their only 2009 Atlanta appearance. STS9's 1320 Record Label also releases Fire It Up, the debut release by electronic duo Big Gigantic on May 19, 2009. This 10-track gem, available for free download only at www.1320records.com, combines hard-hitting dance beats and booming bass lines with lush electronic landscapes and unforgettable melodies. Big Gigantic, hand picked for 1320 Records by members of STS9, is the latest project from Dominic Lalli (Motet saxophonist/producer) and drummer Jeremy Salken.  The two-man sound-machine of Lalli and Salken showcases an array of gripping compositions by combining elements of a DJ and live band setup while mixing thoughtful melodic ideas with pulsating dance tunes.  Big Gigantic flavors the electronic music scene with powerful sax solos and soulful synth lines on top of super hot beats.
