Indie Folk-Rock Singer-Songwriter Collin Herring To Release New Album OCHO Today

Fort Worth-born singer-songwriter-guitarist Collin Herring will release today, Tuesday, November 17, his fourth distinctive album of originals that defy easy categorization, the sophisticated and haunting OCHO: eight songs with essences of rock, folk-rock and country in both the lyrics and instrumentation and subtle surprises in each.

Herring and band play a series of shows to introduce the album to longtime fans and new listeners, starting with an in-store performance at Austin’s Waterloo Records & Video on the day of release.

From the first track to the last — including “Young Ones,” “Seemed to Be,” “Little Aches” and “Nothing’s Wrong” — Herring engages audience attention with the twang of his vocals, the mix of contemporary and traditional in electric and steel guitars, lyrics that lament love with modern insight rather than tears, and wry twists that add texture and mystery.

“I wanted it to sound like I’m just sitting in my living room,” says Herring about OCHO. “I wanted something haunting and organic. It’s not country. It’s not rock ’n’ roll. It’s just Collin Herring. It’s music the way I wrote it.”

On the album with Herring, who moved to Austin a year ago, are Centro-matic’s Will Johnson (backup vocals, guitar), Monahans members Roberto Sanchez (percussion) and Britton Beisenherz (bass), and Keith Hanna (bass) — and, as he’s done on his son’s previous three records, Herring’s father, Ben Roi Herring, contributed pedal steel, keyboards and harmony vocals. It was tracked at Beisenherz’s Ramble Creek Studio in Austin and produced by Johnson.

Herring’s first three albums — AVOIDING THE CIRCUS (2002), THE OTHER SIDE OF KINDNESS (2005) and PAST LIFE CRASHING (2008) — earned awards and comparison to a number of other indie genre-benders including Alejandro Escovedo and Drive-By Truckers.

Upcoming shows include:

November 17, Waterloo Records & Video, Austin
November 26, The Moon Bar, Fort Worth
November 28, The Ghost Room, Austin
December 12, Jake’s Back Room, Lubbock
December 16, Mohawk, Austin

T Bird and the Breaks To Release Series of 45s/Digital Download Today

T Bird and the Breaks, the 10-piece Austin soul/funk band that has proven itself to music writers, longtime fans and new audiences with its debut album, LEARN ABOUT IT (January 2009), will release a new 45 each month, starting with “Monkey Wrench” and its B side “Nightshade Mary” today, Tuesday, November 3.

The new music will be released as 45s available to the band’s fans at its dynamic live shows and on its Web site and as digital downloads. The 45s will be sold with the digital version. For more information, visit www.tbirdandthebreaks.com.

The beat-driven “Monkey Wrench” features a had-enough lyric and precision horns, and “Nightshade Mary” — well, itsplucked-up bass, retro vocals, bongos, harmonica and swamp-voodoo vibe say funk better than the word itself.

Gambit Weekly praised the band’s cool groove: “The gravelly R&B growls, the sassy call-and-response backup singing, the tenor sax struts and hot blasts of trombone-blown air — Austin address or no, T Bird and the Breaks is a Crescent City band at heart.”

November show dates for T Bird and the Breaks include Hattiesburg, Miss., and Macon, Ga. The band is on the bill for the 7th Annual Ski Jam in Steamboat, Colo., in January.

On Tuesday, December 1, the band will release the second 45, featuring “Juju Baby.”

The Mother Hips release Pacific Dust today

The Mother Hips have flown under the radar as true indie music pioneers for almost two decades.  With the release of their new album Pacific Dust (available October 27th on Camera Records), California's unsung psych-pop heroes tell their story. Hailed by critics for their "rootsy mix of 70s rock and power pop" (pitchfork.com) and for their unflinching ability to "sing it sweet and play it dirty" (New Yorker), on Pacific Dust The Hips' signature sound rings more genuine and relevant than ever before.

The Hips - led by co-founders Tim Bluhm (vocals/guitar) and Greg Loiacono (guitar/vocals) - have been playing music for nearly 18 years, and in the process, have had the luxury of exploring and refining their craft. For the band's seventh full-length studio album, The Mother Hips have never been more primed to share their well-traveled tales - the long days and nights on the road, the gritty politics, the smart inward reflections and man, the music! - all delivered with a most appealing balance of Americana storytelling and their California-burnished rock.

Pacific Dust's compositions about penning a song in your kitchen at 3:00 am (the thundering album opener "White Falcon Fuzz"), record company politics (garage-rock boogie "Third Floor Story"), and a father and son's relationship through music (on the ballad "Young Charles Ives") indeed tell the story of many American rock bands. But here's why it matters: The Mother Hips have survived, and in fact thrived, throughout the journey - and Pacific Dust, with its bittersweet melodies, poignant lyrics, and strong and gritty musicianship, is a perfect example of why.

The Mother Hips owe most of their success to their large and loyal fanbase.  Earlier releases such as Part-Timer Goes Full, Green Hills of Earth, and Red Tandy have become almost cult classics among indie music buffs, and the band's most recent 2007 album, Kiss the Crystal Flake, offered proof that the band still continues to attract new supporters. Over the years, the band has worked with and played alongside a slew of renowned/respected colleagues including super-producer Rick Rubin, Wilco, Johnny Cash, and many others.

Today, armed with their newest release Pacific Dust, The Hips are poised to take their experience and talent to another level for this next leg of their already epic journey.

The band will tour this fall in support of Pacific Dust.  The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is as follows:

Paolo Nutini's Sunny Side Up Available Everywhere Today

PaoloIf you think you know Paolo Nutini, think again. His two million selling 2006 debut album, These Streets, established the young Scotsman as a leading light amongst the new wave of singer-songwriters. Paolo's extraordinary follow up, Sunny Side Up, casts him in a whole other light.

"Musically where I'm at, I dont really have a genre or style that I feel a part of," explains Paolo.  "It's a bit of a random mish mash. I honestly wanted it all to come out, and not harness it, not manipulate it. I just wanted it to be organic, and so immediate it's in your face and you can't help but take it all in."

The first single from the 22-year-old's new release is "Candy" - a heart tugging ballad written after an argument with his girlfriend, when it suddenly occurred to him that the fault lay with him. Watch the cinematic video here, and be sure to pick up a copy of Sunny Side Up available everywhere today.

Richie Havens' 'Nobody Left To Crown' Streets Today

Richie Havens'' new album- for the Grateful Web

A sense of timelessness rings throughout Richie Havens' latest release, Nobody Left to Crown, as though the passing years have only strengthened the meaning of his soul-filled folk rock. Nobody Left to Crown, released to the US on Verve Records on July 29th, attests that Richie Havens has never been more relevant, necessary even, than he is today.

Gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular music, Richie Havens has a soulful singing style that remains as unique and ageless as when he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960s.  It's a voice that has inspired and electrified audiences from the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair in 1969, to the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993 - coming full circle with the 30th Woodstock Anniversary celebration, "A Day In The Garden", in 1999. Richie Havens is not a man to easily abandon his hopes for a better world. "We are at the dawn of major change", he declares with a broad smile.  Nobody Left to Crown is his heartfelt and unwavering contribution to these fine aspirations.

For over three decades, Richie has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. With more than twenty-five albums released and a touring schedule that would kill many a younger man, he continues to view his calling as a higher one.  As he told The Denver Post, "I really sing songs that move me.  I'm not in show business; I'm in the communications business.  That's what it's about for me".

Richie Havens tours this summer and fall in support of Nobody Left to Crown.  His current list of tour dates is as follows:
