Preservation Hall Jazz Band Performs Ballet Score at Lincoln Center This Wednesday

The ever prolific Preservation Hall Jazz Band are on a perpetual quest to bring New Orleans jazz to new places and faces.  This Wednesday August 3rd at NYC’s Lincoln Center, they will reunite with celebrated choreographer Trey McIntyre to perform the live score for two ballets: “Ma Maison” and “The Sweeter End.”  The two creative forces originally came together in 2008 for “Ma Maison,” commissioned by the New Orleans Ballet Association, and performed again last year at The Hollywood Bowl in LA..  Then earlier this year, they reunited to debut a companion piece to that ballet, titled “The Sweeter End.”  This Wednesday’s performance is free and begins at 7:30pm.

Another one of Pres Hall’s long-running collaboration has been with My Morning Jacket, the subject of which is documented in the film Louisiana Fairytale, directed by Danny Clinch.  The piece was shown at SXSW and Bonnaroo this past year and will have upcoming screenings at the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival (Aug 26 – 28th in Birmingham, AL) and at the New Orleans Film Festival (Oct 14 – 20th in New Orleans, LA).  Click HERE to watch the trailer.

Pres Hall’s most recent collaboration has been with Grammy-winning bluegrass icons, the Del McCoury Band, who they will perform with at this year’s Austin City Limits Festival September 17th at 7pm.  The two groups released a joint album earlier this year titled American Legacies, and have been performing together regularly including a spot on the Late Show With David Letterman.  Click HERE to watch their take on “I’ll Fly Away” for the show.

LivePhish Limited Released Today

On Sunday June 27, 2010, Phish played their sixth headline show (since 1998) at Merriweather Post Pavilion and the second show of a two-night stand to a hot, sticky summer crowd.  Merriweather Post is a wooden-roofed music amphitheater designed by Frank Gehry with excellent acoustics and a capacity of about 19,000.  The band opened set one with "Walfredo" which includes lyrics about Phish's first visit to the venue opening for Santana in 1992.  This rarity, performed only a half dozen times and for the first time in a decade, began a string of breakouts.  The number two spot featured Bob Marley's "Mellow Mood" (played for the first time since 2003’s IT festival), "Divided Sky" and 2010's first "Tela".  A couple more covers, Clifton Chenier's Bayou swinging "My Soul" and Norman Blake's "Ginseng Sullivan", were clustered mid-set along with "Sample In A Jar."  Set one wrapped up with "Brian And Robert" - bookended by Phish classics "Bathtub Gin" and "Run Like An Antelope", the latter of which contained teases of "Brian And Robert."  Set two was a seamless affair rooted in the show's theme song, "Saw It Again" (also played at Merriweather for the first time since IT).  This playful set hinged on exploratory playing and transitions like "Meatstick" > "Saw It Again" > "Piper" > "Ghost" which, like the rest of the set included deft teases of "Saw It Again".  Phish sealed the fate of this uncommon set by weaving their debut of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" back into "Saw It Again".  The remainder of the show: "Contact", "You Enjoy Myself" (with teases of "Jumpin' Jack Flash") and Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" also included multiple nods to "Saw it Again" among its sonic treasures.

On Saturday July 3, 2010, Phish returned to the Atlanta area for the first time since 2003 to begin the final two-night stand of Leg 1 of their summer tour.  Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park is a general-admission multi-purpose amphitheater with a capacity of about 12,000.  Phish had played this exact date in Atlanta eleven years ago in 1999.  The band kicked off the show with "Character Zero" and the only "Destiny Unbound" of Leg 1, followed by "Rift".  A request from the audience earned a trip to Gamehendge for "McGrupp And The Watchful Hosemasters" before a concentrated "Bathtub Gin" and the year's first "Mountains In The Mist".  The combination of "NICU" > "Gumbo" > "My Sweet One" spotlighted Page (aka "Leon") and Fish, who penned the latter two songs.  Set one concluded with "Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan",  "Strange Design”, the only "Sanity" of summer and "Run Like An Antelope" to close the set.  Set two began with an opening sequence of the The Velvet Underground's "Rock And Roll" > "Prince Caspian” (with a jam that entered "Dave's Energy Guide" territory) > "Tweezer" > "Slave To The Traffic Light".  This sublime Tweezer/Slave combination was featured on LiveBait Vol. 02.  Set two continued with "Bouncing Around The Room" > "Possum" and "Backwards Down The Number Line" > "Harry Hood" > "Loving Cup".  The Encore, "Sleeping Monkey" > "Tweezer Reprise", capped a great first performance at Alpharetta.

On Sunday July 4, 2010, Phish celebrated their second Independence Day in the Atlanta area (they played Lakewood Amphitheatre July 3 and 4, 1999).  The second show of a two-night stand and the last show of Summer Leg 1 began appropriately with an A capella performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" followed by a return to Gamehendge for "Punch You In The Eye" > "Colonel Forbin's Ascent" > "Fly Famous Mockingbird"(narration-free except for Trey pointing out the Mockingbird).  Next came some animal songs in the form of "Camel Walk" and "Ocelot" before a three-song combination of "Heavy Things" > "My Friend, My Friend" > "Lawn Boy" after which the rowdy crowd began to chant "USA, USA."  Set one concluded with "David Bowie" and a fiery "Gotta Jibboo".  After more patriotic chanting by the crowd, Phish kicked off a mostly non-stop set two with "Down With Disease" > "Piper" > "Ghost" > "Waste" > "Julius".  "Mike's Song" > "Tela" was next and was the first and only time in nearly fifteen years that these two songs were paired this way.  After an Independence Day greeting from Trey, the band dropped into the year's only performance of "Harpua".  Trey used his holiday "Harpua" narration to educate Atlanteans and visitors alike about "the history of our country as we know it", pointing out that both the real and alternative history books in schools are full of lies.  Instead, he explained, the nation's true history is to be found within Phish's music.  This rap led perfectly into the band's first and only performance of Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name", sung by Fish with all the spirit of the holiday.  A burst of energy from the crowd acknowledged the message was received.  "Killing in The Name" returned to "Harpua" > "Weekapaug Groove", capping this unique Mike's Groove.  The instrumental "First Tube" filled the Encore slot, closing Leg 1.

Phish | Broomfield, Colorado | 10/10/2010

Phish is back in Colorado... just a mere two months earlier we were all out in Telluride to catch Phish at one of the most stellar locales in America.  1st Bank Arena, in Broomfield, Colorado might be in the middle of cookie-cutter American looking architecture -- but the promoters did get it right after renovating 1st Bank back in 2008>2009.  The place was a complete disaster when it first opened in 2006.  The place was riddled with parking problems, crummy acoustics and a real lack of interest from bands, special events, etc.   I guess the Colorado GOP had their little shindig there, which should give you an indication right away how lame this place was…

Now it’s still the same building in the same cookie-cutter location, but what has changed has made all the difference! This place sounds good! Really good…it’s small too, nearing about 6500 at full capacity.  You're not going to catch Phish in a smaller venue in 2010.  Sure us lucky folk who started seeing Phish in the early 90's will still boast seeing the band in a venue holding less than 500 (for me that was Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS on 4/1/92 -- still my favorite Phish show.. get it!).  However, catching Phish in this relatively intimate venue is pretty cool considering the alternative…Pepsi Center or gag…Fiddler's Green (or whatever they're calling the schwaggy place nowadays).

Trey sounds great.  They really tore the roof off the place last night.  Highlights for me:  Julius was a rager – Golgi is always a lot of fun to hear.  Mike’s Song > Simple > Ghost > Weekapaug Groove had a little bit of everything.   Trey introduced a new song last night titled: “My problem Right There” – Sure Senior Ernesto is one of the most prolific song writers out there… I will confess on average, however, I am probably fond of only 1/3 new songs Trey has brought forth over the past decade or so – But this song I liked right away. Most songs take a least a few listens before I know the song well-enough to gauge if I truly dig it – but this song is catchy, bluesy and I enjoyed it from the get-go.

The band is hot. They sound great.  Check out Grateful Web’s videos from the shows – We’ll have more up on Tuesday as well as photos and phan interviews.

1st Annual Winterfest on the Mountain

The first annual Winterfest on the Mountain happened in Nederland at the new Community Center.  The gold LEED certified venue was reminiscent of a school function with comparisons to elementary school, a high school dance, and what I remembered as youth group lock-ins.  The three day festival featured organic Americana music from Adam Aijala and Ben Kaufmann, Bill Nershi, Drew Emmitt, The Motet, Todd Sheaffer, Tony Trischka, Greensky Bluegrass, Split Lip Rayfield, Great American Taxi, Euforquestra, Whitewater Ramble, Boulder Acoustic Society, Elephant Revival, Pete Kartsounes, Mountain Standard Time, Riverbend, Smooth Money Gesture, York Tide, and 2 set reunion from Phix.

The venue was perfect for a winters’ day. There was a bit of confusion getting up and down the stairwells to the Party and the Theatre stages, but where else could you overhear a conversation over a banjo strumming in the stairwell that included, “yeah, we just couldn’t get organized enough to be productive.”

There was such a strong theme of community running through the entire weekend.  Strangers were stopping strangers, just to shake their hands.  Everybody was playing in the heart of gold band. The Nederland area has such a strong musical pool to draw on.  These musicians have the unique position to be uniting forces in a dark day.  I sometimes think of them as the “Boulder Council of Elders” because so many come to their shows to dance, to release, to laugh, and to cry.  The community center provided just that space.  Downstairs in the Theatre Stage, there was seating that could hone a sweet hand holding session with your lover.  Upstairs at the Party Stage the auditorium was filled with dancers, prancers and hula hoopers alike.

I had a chance to talk with some of what I consider the Boulder Council.  When I asked them how they negotiate this type of power, Paul Murin of Phix responded, “it’s not a power. It’s a privilege.” These musicians bring people together and lay down beats as a trail for folks to follow.  What about the chaos of a festival within what could be considered a small space? There were 500 attending Saturday, bringing the house to capacity.  I have heard performers say that the performance is a cycle; what the audience puts into the performance, the performers turn back to them.  What about that in such a setting as this?  How do you feel when the energy shifts and crowds come and go in and out of your performance?  Chris Sheldon of Great American Taxi & Phix responded by saying, “awesome.  I don’t expect people to stick around the entire time if there are other things going on.  It is definitely cyclical.  But it is more than simply us and the audience, it us and the audience and the other bands and the vendors and us and the audience and the other bands… It’s all compounded into a cyclical intertwining of everyone there.”

Great American Taxi was playing Saturday night at the same time as Elephant Revival on the Theatre Stage.  It was amazing how spiritual, solemn, and soft Elephant Revival was while upstairs Vince Herman and the boys sang about crazy hippy girls and everyone was sweating and singing along.  After Elephant Revival finished up, an all star jam broke out on the Party Stage with Women are Smarter and truly exemplified this example of cyclicity.

After Great American Taxi was the rare Phix show.  I had to get my Phix.  You may not like me for saying this, but as a somewhat veteran of the scene, I’ll be damned if one more dime of my money goes to Phish.  I spent a lot of time, energy, and obviously money on that band.  Now after the “hiatus” and the “break up” only to reunite, my poor heart (forgive the pun!) just can’t take it anymore.  When I sit back and think about it there was plenty I didn’t like anyway, for instance, Trey.  I am a Page girl myself.  I always stand on the side of the keyboards because he is so polite.  He is the last one off the stage every show, waving and making that connection to the audience.  Trey, well… Let’s just say I am never a fan of his guitarsturbating point with the guitar. He holds it up like some golden cow we are all to bow to.  No, I am here to be a part of the cycle.

Paul Murin is so the opposite of Trey.  When I got a chance to pick his brain on the occasion of the festival, he and the rest of the band happily obliged.  When I asked if we could step away from the crowd they all modestly checked the room that said DO NOT ENTER- Bands Only.  Paul looked left, looked right, and shyly tapped on the door.  When he saw no one in there he looked as though he had just gotten away with something!  Not to mention I got to hear a flawless 2001, Hood, Divided Sky, and Roses are Free.  While playing Paul does not emulate Trey in any means other than the music.  Matter of fact, his toes are pointed crow-footed as he plays a sure sign of humility and grace.

I vote with my dollars and this girls’ dollars will be going toward Phix when I need a Phix. Unfortunately, that will not be very often. Phix wrapped up with their 500th show about 2 years ago and since then Brian and Chris have been touring with Great American Taxi.  When I asked what relentless touring was like, Brian responded “Waffle House.  It’s a way of life.” Paul, recently married, (congrats!)  responded that he would like to put those days behind him.  Currently, he is playing with 3 other bands in the north range of Colorado, Ethereal Plane, Mason’s Children, and Magnolia Row.  “As far as I’m concerned, I believe we should all add as many skills or gadgets to the utility belt as we can.”

Community concerns include the wide range of emotions.  This festival addressed a wide range of needs.  There was something for everyone in every state of affairs. I think Vince Herman said it best when he told me, “True friendships and values, that’s what we aim for.”

Check out some more great photos from the 1st Annual Winterfest up in Nederland, Colorado.

New Trey Anastasio Release + preview track

album will benefit the Seven Below Arts Initiative- for the Grateful Web

Original Boardwalk Style, a live album from Trey Anastasio and the Undectet, will be released on June 10th on Trey's own Rubber Jungle Records. Proceeds from the sale of the album will benefit the Seven Below Arts Initiative, established by Trey in 2006 to foster artistic development and support arts education in the state of Vermont.

The album was recorded at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ on December 30th and 31st of 2006, coming at the end of the band's holiday tour. The two shows marked the culmination of a long year of touring and growth as what began as a six-piece sextet in the beginning of the year had progressed into a full-force eleven member Undectet.

The raw energy of a well-oiled band at the top of its game permeated the set as the composer/vocalist/guitarist led The Undectet - comprised of Tony Hall (bass, vocals), Ray Paczkowski (keyboards), Jeff Sipe (drums), Christina Durfee (vocals, synthesizer), Jennifer Hartswick (vocals, trumpet), Peter Apfelbaum (saxophone, flute), Russell Remington (saxophone, flute), Jeff Cressman (trombone), Dave Grippo (saxophone) and Cyro Baptista (percussion) - through electrifying big band arrangements of his classic songs, replete with big horns and dazzling Brazilian percussive stylings.

Original Boardwalk Style features over 75 minutes of music, remixed from the multitrack masters by Trey and Ben Collette at Rubber Jungle Studios and mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering. In addition to CD and digital download formats, the album will be available as a double-gatefold, audiophile grade 180-gram LP Vinyl pressing.

The album is now available for pre-order as CD and Vinyl Trey's online store as well as digital audio downloads (in both MP3 and FLAC formats) at LivePhish.com. All pre-orders will automatically be entered to win a professionally printed photo - signed by Trey and esteemed photographer Jeff Kravitz - of the band on stage at the House of Blues. Color corrected by Jennifer Brown, it will be framed in barn board crafted by Lars Fisk, a creative contributor to The Barn's Artist-in-Residence program. Phil & Trey | 2004

Truly amazing, that is all that really needs to be said about these two! I recently attended the two Phil shows at Red Rocks, and the reuniting show with Bobby in Oklahoma. They left me speechless and wanting more. Of course, being in school, for me all good things come to an end. However, I know that Phil will still be playing that bass until the last breath he takes, and for that I am forever grateful.
