Dirty Dozen Brass Band & Booker T with Hill Country Revue

dozenOn Friday, April 24th the Backbeat Jazzfest Series will kick off its fourth consecutive season with a high-spirited performance by the legendary Dirty Dozen Brass Band featuring Booker T. Quoted by the Rolling Stone for radically modernizing brass-band music, the members of Dirty Dozen Brass Band were the first to incorporate funk and bebop to traditional New Orleans sounds putting distinctly personal stamps on traditional and familiar material. Joining the Dirty Dozen Brass Band will be Hammond B3 organ alchemist Booker T Jones, one of America's most prolific, distinguished and instantly recognizable musical forces who recently collaborated on his new album with The Drive By Truckers and Neil Young. Get ready for a high-octane performance when New Orleans most prolific modern brass band and organ prodigy Booker T take the stage!

Following the soulful sounds of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band feat. Booker T will be a performance by THE modern blues band for the new generation, Hill Country Revue. Formed by Cody Dickinson from The North Mississippi Allstars, Hill Country Revue is a product of a very special time for modern Mississippi country blues. The band is a collective of musicians from the fertile soil of North Mississippi who have grown up living and breathing the folk music of African fife and drums that dates back to the birth of the nation.

Don't miss these spirit-filled performances at Republic NOLA!

And remember, this year the Backbeat Jazzfest Series will be offering music lovers and the musicians they love smoke-free environments at all shows.

Pretty Lights Pen Red Rocks Show with STS9

lightsPretty Lights will join STS9 on Saturday, July 25th at Red Rocks in a triumphant return to Denver, after blowing out box offices across the country for the first few months of 2009. Three sellout shows in Fort Collins, Boulder, and Denver in February sent the innovative electronic act off onto the road for a headlining tour through the Southeastern U.S. with huge momentum. They sold out every show on the tour including the famous Georgia Theatre in Athens, before the doors even opened. With at least 13 more scheduled shows between now and their return to Colorado, Pretty Lights will be pumping out of speakers from coast to coast, wrecking the standard of electronic music.

Pretty Lights is the musical vision of the ultra-versatile Colorado based producer, Derek Vincent Smith, accompanied in the live setting by drummer, Cory Eberhard. Together these two achieve a raw energy rarely reached in the realm of electronic music. At a time when music lovers from almost all subcultures and genres are finding common ground in the basic form of bangin' beats, Pretty Lights is giving the people what they want: electro organic, cutting-edge party rocking beats that fill venues with energy and emotion and send dance floors into frenzies. What makes Pretty Lights truly different though, is that the beats carry serious soul.

As momentum for Pretty Lights builds, so does the anticipation for the act’s return to its Colorado roots, where many fans were left outside the door wishing they had bought tickets sooner for their last three-night Colorado run. Fans across all genres are coming together to fuel the Pretty Lights movement. One only need to download Filling up the City Skies, the free double disc that was released for download only a few short months ago at www.prettylightsmusic.com, to see what the hype is about.

Filling Up The City Skies is a two disc, 26 track journey through past, present, and future. Smith juxtaposes collages of beautiful vintage samples against backdrops of futuristic synthesis and dirty broken beats, creating a sound that can snap your neck while simultaneously shedding your tears. The album has been downloaded over 50,000 times from the Pretty Lights website in the short 4 months since its release, proving that the PL sound is not only getting around, it's spreading like a virus.

What makes the next Denver show all the more intriguing is that, somehow, amidst the relentless touring, Smith is nearing completion of the next Pretty Lights album. Scores of unheard new material is sure to be dropped at Red Rocks on July 25th, considering a quote direct from Smith’s own blog, “Maintaining productivity, and striving to constantly create fresh new music is the only way to keep this adventure exciting for myself…I couldn’t bear to tour an the same record for more than a few months…”

Pretty Lights will be continuing to make its name on the festival circuit this summer which will include appearances at Bonnaroo, 10k Lakes, Rothbury, High Sierra, Wakarusa, and Camp Bisco.

The Lee Shaw Trio With Special Guest John Medeski

leeVeteran pianist / composer LEE SHAW performs a special concert featuring her trio - bassist Rich Syracuse and drummer Jeff Siegel - and special guest JOHN MEDESKI  on SUNDAY, APRIL 5, at 7:30 PM at "the Egg" Center for the Performing Arts in Albany, NY. Tickets $24. Box office (518) 473-1845.

MEDESKI, of Medeski, Martin & Wood fame, studied with Shaw for a few years starting at age 13 and calls her one of his most beloved piano teachers. "She's a fantastic pianist and an incredible musical mind."

SHAW, a youthful octogenarian who studied with Oscar Peterson and worked with countless jazz luminaries including Dexter Gordon, Thad Jones, Chico Hamilton, Pepper Adams, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Richard Davis, Slam Stewart, Major Holly, and Eddie Jones, recently released a "LIVE IN GRAZ" which has earned wide acclaim:

"At age 82, pianist Lee Shaw is one of the unsung elders of jazz… Her harmonic language is expansive, her time impeccable, her touch divine." - Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes

"…rich, expressive palette.  A modest, irresistible person of immodest, irrepressible talent, she comes across both in the interview and at the keyboard as an artist who had a virtually religious calling for jazz, come what may." - Owen McNally, The Hartford Courant

"She does not sound like any of her predecessors... relaxed tempos…gentle but not lacking inner fire." - Scott Yanow, Jazziz

"Shaw's own playing style has the same elegant, lyrical approach shared by pianists [Billy] Taylor, Errol Garner, and Ahmad Jamal. Shaw - like Taylor -- doesn't play the notes so much as she coaxes them out of the piano, using a deft touch most safecrackers would envy.  … and makes beautiful, evocative music to this day." - J. Hunter, All About Jazz

Gregory Alan Isakov on Tour with Brandi Carlile

Singer/songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov hits the road with Americana artist Brandi Carlile for a string of March and April 2009 dates. Isakov's forthcoming album release, This Empty Northern Hemisphere (May 19, 2009), features a duet with Carlile - a cut of Leonard Cohen's "One of Us Cannot Be Wrong." Carlile also performs on four of the album's original songs.

It was while touring that Isakov first caught the attention of Carlile. The pair have since become collaborators and friends.  For this special run of dates, Isakov and Carlile are sure to bring some of their recent collaborations live to the stage.

The current list of confirmed tour dates with Gregory Alan Isakov and Brandi Carlile is as follows:

March 24 World Cafe Philadelphia PA
March 25 Ram's Head Annapolis MD
March 26 Birchmere Washington DC
March 27 Woodstock Town Hall Theatre Woodstock VT
March 28 Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center Westhampton Beach NY
March 31 Tarrytown Music Hall Tarrytown NY
April 01 The Music Hall Portsmouth NH
April 02 Iron Horse Northampton MA
April 03 South Portland Auditorium South Portland ME
April 04 Ethical Center for the Arts New York NY
April 06 Kent Stage Kent OH
April 07 The Vogue Indianapolis IN
April 08 Lakeshore Theater Chicago IL
April 09 Pabst Theater Milwaukee WI
April 10 Alltel Center Mankato MN
April 11 Hoyt Sherman Theater Des Moines IA
Aril 14 Wheeler Opera House Aspen CO

This Empty Northern Hemisphere is Isakov's latest collection of songs in which he conjures the miracles and heartaches of day to day living then transforms them into melodies, with a serious commitment to songcraft and musicianship.

"Writing and performing is a mystery to me," explains the South African born multi-instrumentalist. "I try to get myself out of the way as much as I can."

"There were moments while making the new album that were so different than anything I've done before," says Isakov, who combines his personal past with poetry to create a musically visceral present.

His music dubbed "punk folk" by the Indigo Girls' Amy Ray, Isakov has been recognized by critics and colleagues as a real and original talent. In 2008, Denver's Westword named Isakov their Best Acoustic Folk Artist.  The previous year he was given the paper's Best of Denver Singer-Songwriter award; they called him "a rootsier Glen Phillips channeling Kelly Joe Phelps."

Comparisons bother Isakov; he's brought his influences into the fold for This Empty Northern Hemisphere. "Everyone I've ever listened to made it into the record--It's like a traveling circus." And Isakov is its truth and beauty-seeking ringmaster.

Cryptacize Return With 'Mythomania,' Out April 21st

photo by Denny Renshaw- for the Grateful Web

Cryptacize deals in the unforgettable melody, the forsaken chord and the extravagant sentiment. It's a distinct kind of pleasure they offer, not casual background or 'lifestyle' music. An unlikely synthesis of musical styles, Mythomania (Cryptacize's second) is an album not quite like any other. Nedelle Torrisi's surefooted and richly nuanced vocal arabesques, like a modern day Freddie Mercury or Ronnie Spector, strangely complement Chris Cohen's guitar, maniacally sped-up a la Les Paul or staccato and funny like Roy Smeck or Adolph Jacobs of the Coasters. Michael Carreira's syncopated drum corps rudiments and pit-orchestra rave-ups propel the songs with a refreshingly buoyant touch that never lapses into rock music cliches.

Mythomania is a revelation by anyone's measure. The playing shows a new level of confidence and intent, as well as an artful sense of timing - it's the sound of a band that's found themselves and is growing by leaps and bounds. Patiently built ideas are brought to full fruition, and it's recorded in fidelity that surrounds you. The music is thicker and more continuous; in addition to autoharp, guitars and drums there are now electric basses, keyboards, piano, even found or purely electronic sounds. And yet the same sense of space and suspense which guided 2008's Dig That Treasure is instantly recognizable on Mythomania.

As the title Mythomania suggests, reality is transformed when fiction is created upon fiction and though it may be barely recognizable or compatible with the world of the everyday, this reality can also be beautiful - see for example the album's title track, an allegorical tale about the moon's view of earthly folly. Exploring the paradox of human perception, a personal ambivalence about time and change, the notions of chance and free will versus those of eternalism and fate, the limits of credibility and belief, Mythomania builds upon the philosophical concerns of Dig That Treasure. Like its predecessor, its tone is often both happy and sad, pragmatic and mystical, hopeful and doomed.

Never ones to follow the rules, Cryptacize have been touring the US in a Toyota Corolla (opening for bands as diverse as Why?, Danielson, Shearwater, Ponytail, Magik Markers, Marnie Stern, The Blow, Mirah, etc.) performing using miniature amps and drums - a sight which has caught many a spectator off guard. They are a thoroughly unconventional band, but one that is somehow miraculously easy on the ears. Deceptively simple, using modest means to achieve ambitious ends, never predictable, Cryptacize challenges preconceptions about how a song should go or how rock music should make you feel. But in the end, they always leave you with a tune you can hum and lyrics that tell a story.

Recorded by Cryptacize in a cabin near Yosemite National Park over the summer of 2008, Mythomania will be released on April 21st on Asthmatic Kitty.
