Steve Kimock: 30 Years of Innovation on Tour

Steve Kimock is an innovator. Not just for his ability to successfully navigate live performances spanning the Summer of Love through the advent of MTV and well into the new electronic-pop revolution. And not just for his gift for leading the live music recording and download revolution with a meticulous dedication to archive and share his live shows for more then twenty years (Macworld, 2005). He is not just an innovator because of his craftsmanship restoring vintage analog equipment and for a completely custom and organic sound (he designed a highly collected edition of Two Rock brand "Kimock Amplifiers" and most recently a custom, ergonomic Scott Walker guitar, in stereo).

kimockSteve Kimock is also an innovator for his ability to create matchless arrangements of musicians, who for over thirty years have collectively created inimitable improvisational performances based on the elements of classic rock, jazz, prog and rhythm & blues, with the kind of soul only someone with his experience and depth can construct.

His latest project, aptly named Crazy Engine, is also approached with the same "a bit of the old and a bit of the new" logic. The line-up includes the legendary Hammond B3 player Melvin Seals, known for his twenty years with the Jerry Garcia Band, as well as his son, John Morgan Kimock on drums. Not without merit, the twenty-year-old drummer has organized a number of self-released albums earning him a record deal with Rope-A-Dope Records by the age of 18. Rounding out the quartet is accomplished singer-songwriter and cello player, Trevor Exter, who was plucked out of the NYC indie music scene to fill the roll of bass and vocals. This arrangement of seasoned players and talented youthful musicians blends with Kimock's innovative mind for music - and foretells a merge of his vintage appeal with a modern twist, to befit music lovers of all types.

One of the last living musicians still touring from the era of Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Grateful Dead and The Band, Steve Kimock has led a storied career. He has performed with a cast of characters that reads like the musicians almanac including John Cipollina, Peter Frampton, Little Feat, Jerry Garcia & all members of the Grateful Dead, Bruce Hornsby, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Buddy Miles, Buddy Cage, Trey Anastasio & all members of Phish, Jorma Kaukonen, Vassar Clements, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Joe Satriani, Baaba Maal, Angelique Kidjo, Elvin Bishop, Steve Winwood, Derek Trucks, George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, Grace Slick, Papa John Creach, Norton Buffalo, Amos Garrett, Terry Haggerty, Hadi Al Sadoon, Stephen Perkins, Nicky Hopkins and Freddie Roulette just to name a few.

His ability to articulate tone, melody and emotion into music combined with technical brilliance has earned Kimock the title "Guitar Monk" by Relix Magazine for his commitment to guitar, and his ability to make it speak with its own original voice. Perhaps this is why Jerry Garcia himself named Steve Kimock his "favorite unknown guitarist" in Rollingstone Magazine, months before he passed.

Steve Kimock Crazy Engine is hitting the road this fall for a tour with dates spanning the East Coast, the Midwest and even the Pacific Northwest before ending down south for a two-night run in Fayetteville, AR - a place where Kimock legend tells of unusual power jams, sit in musicians and surprises, an unlikely tour finale which should live up to it's long standing tradition.

As always, this series of intimate performances will be recorded and available for purchase, and word is a live "fan release" may be in the works. While Kimock treats the spirit of live recording as seriously as another "member in the band", the live show is not to be missed. Kimock's unparalleled ability to embrace and capture a theater musically is the stuff of legends.

The Blue Note Years: The Photography Of Francis Wolff & Jimmy Katz

Spring, 2009 JazzPrezzo proudly announces the release of The Blue Note Years: The Photography Of Francis Wolff and Jimmy Katz in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Blue Note Records, the most important record label in the history of jazz.

John-ColtraneThis elegant coffee table book, including two CDs of music, spans an incredible seventy years of the label, from its beginnings to the present, through the eyes of two master photographers. The images, many of them never seen before, capture the major artists in modern jazz at historic recording sessions and other contexts. In recognition of this unique collection, the Jewish Museum of Berlin plans a special exhibition of photographs from the book for the fall of 2009.

Designed by award winning designer Ingo Wolff, the book features essays by producer Michael Cuscuna,  Blue Note president Bruce Lundvall, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder, and jazz historian Ashley Kahn.

Wolff’s Rolleiflex caught each important development from traditional and swing-era styles of the 40’s through bebop, hard bop, soul, avant-garde, and even the first sounds of fusion.

Photographs include jazz legends  Sidney Bechet and Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey and Horace Silver, Miles Davis and Clifford Brown, and Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, breadth staggering in its historical importance.  The story continues with jazz greats Jackie McLean, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Grant Green, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Andrew Hill, Cassandra Wilson and Joe Lovano.

Wolff’s iconic black and white photographs, intimate, relaxed, and respectful of the musicians and their craft, raised jazz players to a heroic level. His point of view endures today: musicians intensely working on their instruments, peering at sheet music or talking among themselves, playing the music with eyes gazing off into space or closed in musical rapture.

In the early nineties, Blue Note found Wolff’s spiritual descendant in Jimmy Katz whose style has its own distinctive signature. Like Wolff, Katz can catch the right moment, frame it, light it and shoot it in a fraction of a second. Their careers have run along parallel lines: both picked up the camera early, fell under the spell of jazz, and established a mature, visual signature. Like a Wolff image, a Katz portrait is instantly recognizable.

Ashley Kahn writes, “Seeing, as the saying goes, is believing. In the photography of both Wolff and Katz there is a deep, shared reverence for the music, captured in a way that makes us all fortunate witnesses to some private and truly historic moments.”  Bruce Lundvall comments, “This book is the nicest 70th Anniversary gift that Blue Note could get.”

Son of the legendary Bob Marley, Ky-Mani Marley continues his father's legacy in a different, but difficult world after thirty years, delivering the pop-reggae sound in which his family's been known for, while adding his unique mixture of classical reggae beats and contemporary hip hop. The following year, 'The Journey' was eventually re-released in the United States. His latest, "Radio", is Ky-Mani Marley's first release since his Grammy nominated album, 'Many More Roads', five years ago. The album features several key singles including 'One Time' and 'The March and Conversation', and features contemporary hip hop.

Blue Turtle Seduction & Izabella Together on New Years

photo courtesy of Tsunami Publicity- for the Grateful Web

Looking for a high-energy bash to bring in the 2009 New Year? Look no further than Sparks, Nevada where California up-and-comers, Blue Turtle Seduction and Izabella, have joined forces to produce a "retro-formal" New Year's blowout at the Great Basin Brewery. Both bands have garnered reputations for turning each and every performance into an all-out dance party, and this all-night celebration promises to be no exception.

The fresh musical movement known as Blue Turtle Seduction is a two-fold sonic experience. Both musically and socially aware, the five-piece rock / bluegrass / reggae / hip-hop hybrid creates music that defies classification. Their 2008 release, "13 Floors" was recently selected as one of the top 100 albums of 2008 at KTHX 100.1 radio. Nestled between legends such as Radiohead, Lucinda Williams and Joan Baez, 2009 promises to be a big year for this South Lake Tahoe band.

Izabella is another California band to keep your eyes on. Their originals are dead solid with hooky lines and exultant, flowing music - - following in the Bay Area tradition of great forebears like the Sons of Champlin, Izabella is making national waves in a very short time.

The New Year's Eve show will begin at 10:00 PM and will feature drink specials on the Great Basin's award winning brews as well as a champagne toast at midnight. Fans are encouraged to dress in "retro-formal attire" and it is strongly suggested that attendees purchase tickets in advance, the show is expected to sell out.

Elliott Murphy: On Tour In the USA For the First Time in Eight Years

Photo by Sue Rynski- for the Grateful Web

ELLIOTT MURPHY - the legendary Paris-based American rock troubadour will embark on his first U.S. tour in eight years.  The tour kicks off December 2008 in the Northeast U.S. (New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, DC, Albany, Larchmont, Amagansett), and continues on to the West Coast, where he hasn't played in 12 years) in January 2009 (San Francisco, Felton, Tehachapi, Los Angeles, San Diego, Long Beach). Elliott will be accompanied by his longtime guitarist extraordinaire Olivier Durand.  More shows will follow in Spring 2009.

Elliott Murphy has collaborated with Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Phil Collins and other great rock 'n roll names.  His ground-breaking, debut album AQUASHOW was recently called an "Album Classic" in a full page review in the UK's prestigious Uncut magazine.

Opening all shows will be multi-cultural singer-songwriter Jann Klose, who was born in Germany and raised in Kenya, South Africa, Hamburg and first came to the US as an exchange student in Cleveland.  His album REVERIE is now being played on over 80 stations in North America.  Jann tours aggressively in the U.S. and Europe.  Recent shows included collaborations with Annie Haslam and John Tout of Renaissance, sharing the stage with Marty Stuart, Rosanne Cash and Roger McGuinn at Martin Guitars' 175th Anniversary Concert, and a special show at the German Embassy in Washington, DC. Jann moved to the Bronx in 2000, the same year Elliott played his last show at the Bottom Line in New York City.

Elliott Murphy will be promoting his latest release NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND - his 30th album in a non-stop 35-year career. Album Music Guide (AMG) recently awarded NOTES a rave 4-Star review making Elliott one of the rare artists who have received over fifteen 4 -star reviews on this prestigious review site.

Elliott was born to a show business family in New York and began his career by winning the 1966 New York State Battle of the Bands, and then followed a troubadour's odyssey across Europe included a bit part in Federico Fellini's film "Roma." His career was launched by the critical success of his debut album AQUASHOW followed by LOST GENERATION (Produced by Doors producer Paul Rothschild), NIGHT LIGHTS (featuring Billy Joel), JUST A STORY FROM AMERICA (featuring Phil Collins and Mick Taylor) and an extraordinary duet with Bruce Springsteen on his 1996 masterpiece SELLING THE GOLD.  (Bruce often invites Elliott on stage with him during his European tours.)  In October 2008, he was honored with a monumental exhibition in Paris' Town Hall entitled "Elliott Murphy - Last of the Rock Stars – Retrospective" featuring hundreds of posters, photos, videos, album covers and memorabilia.

Elliott Murphy is also a published author of short story collections  (most recently Café Notes) and two novels (Cold And Electric and the neo-western Poetic Justice) as well as penning the liner notes for the Velvet Underground album 1969 Live. Elliott has lived in Paris for 18 years and has performed at such prestigious venues as the Montreux Jazz Festival as well as opening for Bob Dylan at the Pistoia Blues Festival.

Kyle Hollingsworth - photo by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

In celebration of fifteen years of business in Boulder, The Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery will be hosting a night of funk at the beautiful Boulder Theater to say thanks to the local community for all of their support.  The Mountain Sun recently opened their third location, The Vine Street Pub, on Denver's booming 17th Street strip; adding to their two Boulder locations, The Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery and The Southern Sun.  Since The Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery opened its doors in 1993, The Pub has been a favorite local gathering place, where music has always played an important role in creating the Pub's festive vibe.

For the October 18th event, which will benefit KGNU 88.5 FM and KGNU 1390 AM, The Pearl Street All-Stars will rock the house.  The Pearl Street All-Stars is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration featuring George Porter Jr. (The Funky Meters / Bass), Kyle Hollingsworth (The String Cheese Incident / Keyboards), Eric Krasno (Soulive / Guitar), Adam Deitch (Lettuce / Drums) & Hazel Miller (Hazel Miller Band / Vocals) and the 14th Street Horns ( Danny Sears - Panjea / Trumpet, Dominic Lalli - The Motet / Saxophone, and Jon Stewart - The Motet / Saxophone). Fellow Colorado brewers Lefthand Brewing (who also turns 15 this month) and Avery Brewing Company will help The Mountain Sun supply the beer this year (with the Vine Street location now open and waiting for zoning permits to brew more beer on site, The Mountain Sun hasn't yet caught up to the increased demand!), offering three ales on special for $3 - Avery IPA, Lefthand Haystack Wheat and Mountain Sun's own Colorado Kind Ale.

Gratefulfest 9 - A Weekend to Remember

DSO wants to thank all of you who made it out and were a part of another wonderful weekend of Gratefulfest out at Nelson's Ledges. Dan Healy naturally killed it on the mixing board, using the Meyer line-array rig that he practically invented and we were honored to have our friends, Donna-Jean and Keller Williams sit in with us. Additionally, we continued the tradition of supporting Rett Syndrome research by raising $2500 through GratefulFest supporters; that brings the total since 2003 to over $15,000!! DSO would like to offer a special thanks to everyone who contributed to this special cause and especially to Julie Fultz and Erika Seth for running the raffle booth. So, what a fantastic weekend - thanks again for coming out and sharing it with us!

The tour will also include another exciting Black Tie Die Ball at the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles on September 27. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Rex Foundation, celebrating its 25th anniversary! Come by early and hang with DSO at the pre-show reception; we hope to see you there!
