Dirty Vegas/New Music Video Feat. Jena Malone

Ready to capture the international dance floor once again, Electric Love marks the explosive return of Dirty Vegas. It finds that elusive sweet spot between the slickly polished electronic sounds of their past and a more decidedly rock edge, deftly balancing beats and guitar-led melodies. After touring the world on the strength of two albums (2002’s Dirty Vegas, 2004’s One), music featured in two films (2005’s Goal!, 2006’s The Boys & Girls Guide To Getting Down) and an international dance hit that snagged a Grammy (“Days Go By”), Dirty Vegas (Steve Smith and the non-related Ben Harris and Paul Harris) had parted ways in 2005 to work on individual projects and just to take a breather. Without the pressures of a recording contract or label executives issuing directives, the trio found a fresh kind of positivity when they reformed four years later to craft Electric Love. Dirty Vegas is rocking with an updated sound on their new album, but the fact that they are game-changers is nothing new; just ask anyone in the music business who deals with the worlds of licensing for film and television. The band’s debut single “Days Go By,” originally released in 2001, appeared on a television advertisement for Mitsubishi. The revived single, and its wonderfully magnetic original video, not only catapulted to Grammy success (for Best Dance Recording in 2003), but was a huge benchmark that helped set a whole new model for the marketing of music. The band also won three DanceStar Awards and was even named Electronic Artist of the Year by Playboy.

Dirty Vegas, who now have made available the new music video to their latest single “Electric Love” featuring actress Jena Malone (The Soloist, Into The Wild, Donnie Darko).

Written and produced by photographer James Gooding the “Electric Love” video features Jena as she has never been seen before (pole dancing (!), hanging at a cool muscle car race).

“Electric Love” is James Gooding’s directorial debut as well as the first visual element from Dirty Vegas’ new album—also titled Electric Love—due out April 26 on OM Records.  It is also the first of two videos with Jena that will run concurrently over one larger narrative.

FRANK SINATRA: BEST OF VEGAS

In the span of a few years, Las Vegas refueled Frank Sinatra’s career and Sinatra in turn became the lead figure in the city’s ascendance. It was a synergistic relationship that has since become legendary in the annals of 20th century entertainment.

Some of the finest moments in that legendary symbiosis are captured in Frank Sinatra: Best of Vegas, a series of live recordings set for release on Concord Records on February 15, 2011. The 14-song set, under license from Frank Sinatra Enterprises (FSE), captures Sinatra in concert at the Sands, Caesars Palace and the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas between 1961 and 1987. The collection is a distillation of highlights from Sinatra: Vegas, the five-disc boxed set (4 CD/1 DVD) of live recordings released by Reprise Records in 2006.

“From his debut at the Desert Inn in September 1951, no entertainer was ever more synonymous with the city of Las Vegas than Frank Sinatra,” says Charles Pignone, author of The Sinatra Treasures, in his comprehensive liner notes to the Best of Vegas CD. “It has been said that next to legalized gambling, nothing has been more beneficial and profitable to Las Vegas than Frank Sinatra.”

All the Sinatra classics are here, performed live before adoring crowds at some of the most prestigious venues in the history of Vegas. “The Lady Is a Tramp” (The Sands, 1961); “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” (The Sands, 1966); “All or Nothing at All” (Caesars Palace, 1982); “Pennies From Heaven” (The Golden Nugget, 1987); and of course, the “Theme From New York, New York” (Caesars Palace, 1982) are just some of the gems in the Best of Vegas collection.

“If you were in Las Vegas at the same time as Sinatra, there was nothing else that could compare,” says Pignone. “Even when the entertainment in town was changing from headliners to magic and production shows, Sinatra was still the ‘main event.’”

Or in the words of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, Sinatra was “the destination’s most enduring icon, an inimitable original who was influential in shaping Las Vegas’ image and entertainment scene.”

Sinatra returned to Vegas in December with the opening of Sinatra Dance With Me, at the Wynn Las Vegas. Conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp, Sinatra Dance With Me features original recorded masters of Frank Sinatra with a big band and 14 of the world’s finest dancers.

Furthur’s Red Rocks Weekend

Furthur announced late last weekend they're playing 2 nights at Red Rocks Amphitheater, just outside of Morrison, Colorado.  Furthur also announced a series of other shows, including a headliner at this year's Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco.  Other dates include stops in Eugene, Oregon, Santa Monica, California, Redmond, Washington and Las Vegas, Nevada.  This comes on the heels of their east coast tour, which features their headliner show at the Neteva Festival as well as the All Good Festival in West Virginia.

Tom Constanten announces Shows in Arizona and Las Vegas

Tom Constanten and Ken Foust have released a new CD called "Moved To Stanleyville". They are playing shows in Arizona and Las Vegas with Gent Treadly, a Manhattan based jam band who were Vince Welnick's east coast band before his death, in support of this new project. The dates include Prescott College, Tempe, Flagstaff, and Sedona.

Tom Constanten is an American keyboardist, best known for playing with the Grateful Dead from 1968-1970. Tom has been performing in different forms and genres since the late 1950's, appearing at such popular venues as The Fillmore Auditorium, Playboy After Dark, and the original Woodstock Festival. He was Professor of Music at SUNY Buffalo and the San Francisco Art Institute (1974-1984).  He performed as Artist-in-Residence at Harvard University, and consulted for the Smithsonian Institution.

Ken Foust is a Charlotte, NC musician best known for his jam-blues based project from the early 90's, Hot Wax (see Spread base, 10/27/1990), that played in the southeast region.  Together they have produced a contemporary Americana / blues effort that is fresh and engaging. These shows will feature songs from the project. This live group also includes Greg Koerner from Gent Treadly on Base and Ken's Twin Brother Doug Foust on Drums.

The CD is garnering great reviews. The album is featured on David Gans's "The Grateful Dead Hour" and Uncle Dave's weekly radio program, "Dead Air.

Widespead Panic Rocks Vegas

Halfway through the Jack Johnson set, on the soccer field, in the dark, it suddenly seems like Altamont. The ground is covered with plastic water bottles and beer cups, making it hard to walk properly as we make our way toward the stadium to catch the Widespread Panic gig.  Some people are actually sitting beneath the crazed throng, on their blankets, only to be trampled over and then barraged with heartfelt apologies.

I arrive at Panic not knowing what to expect.  I have never seen them, much less heard them.  I know they are huge.  I know their following is intense. Truthfully, I have absolutely no interest in this band, but their reputation is such that I feel compelled to check them out.

I arrive with my friend, we'll call him "R," and manage to stake out two very nice seats, about halfway up the stage right riser at the fifteen yard line. These same seats were in the VIP section whenever the Dead played at this place, so you know they're good seats.

The band comes out and jumps into this country rocker, hard-edged like the Outlaws but with a Marshall Tucker kind of flavor.  In fact, it seems like Marshall Tucker on crystal meth.  It is so horrible I have this sudden flash that ten million years ago someone stepped on a moth and Jerry was never even born and this was the band that rocked a generation and started a whole new culture, but a culture rooted more in Dale Earnhardt than Kerouac or Cassady.

But then something happened.  It all started to make sense.  Suddenly I realized just how hard these fuckers were rocking, and how good they were at it. Suddenly I tasted something I hadn't tasted since I saw Hot Tuna at the old Academy of Music...  

This was some hard rockin' shit.  The bass player, Dave Schools, was dropping bombs left and right, driving the music to insane depths and heights. I could not believe how tight these guys were.  And how hard they rocked. I say this in all honesty: this was the hardest I have ever seen a band rock.  Ever.  And this was one of the best live concert experiences I ever had, hands down, slam dunk.

What fascinated me was that the harder those fuckers rocked, the more relaxed the crowd got, like they had to sit down just to process exactly how hard, and articulately, these motherfuckers were rocking.  It was insane.  It was so brazenly physical, yet also so mental.  I turned to this girl next to me and told  her, "This is some rockin' shit." She just looked at me and nodded emphatically...

The next thing I know, Trey hits the stage and they dip into "Slipping Into Darkness," which was astounding, and then two more numbers, with Trey and Schools and all of them in each others' faces just tearing it up. And the longer they play, the more I'm worried that I need to get out of there and make it over to the Hard Rock where Phil will be performing his midnight show at The Joint...

But I can't leave.  And why should I?  I'm seeing one of the greatest acts I've ever witnessed and I'm supposed to leave?

Two friends of mine spot me and tell me it's time to go.

"Why?" I wonder.
"Because we're gonna miss Phil.  It's gonna be a fuckin' madhouse over there."
"But this band is great!"
"I know, I know.  They are.  But we need to go."
"But there's no way Phil is gonna be better than this.  Seriously.  It's impossible.  There's no way."

"Look.  They're doing a drum solo now.  They'll probably do two more songs and then an encore.  You heard it already.  They're great.  You saw it.  Now let's get the hell out of here while we can."

He was right, of course, so we left...
