Lapis Luna Vintage Jazz & Classic Swing Music

Lapis Luna brings you the captivating jazz of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s with a classic glittering sound. Standards, enchanting ballads, obscure swing-era gems, and vintage melodies the way they were meant to be heard: vibrant, fun, romantic, and cool.

The Lapis Luna Quartet is in an open run on Thursday evenings from 9pm to Midnight in the Plaza Hotel's Rose Club on Fifth Avenue at Central Park South. There is no cover, but there are marvelous drinks and champagne — of course!

The band is Shawn Aileen Clark on vocals, John Merrill on guitar, Chris Pistorino on bass, and Brian Floody on drums and percussion.

New York Magazine has identified Lapis Luna as an 'Ultimate New York City Wedding' band choice for four years running, and accordingly they were the wedding band for Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Geoffrey Arrend's (500 Days of Summer) nuptial celebration. Lapis Luna has also recently been featured as the swing band in the ad campaign for Kate Spade's new fragrance 'Twirl.'

In addition to their open engagement at the historic Plaza Hotel, Lapis Luna has other exciting performances in the city this spring, including:

Friday, May 20, 2011, 7:30pm to 9:30pm with the Lapis Luna Six. Smalls, 183 W. 10 Street at Seventh Avenue. A concert at one of the best jazz clubs in New York City. $20 at the door. Begin your evening in the sweetest, swinging way.

For more information on Lapis Luna, including full schedule, song list, and videos, please go to www.lapisluna.com or their Facebook page.

Here We Go Magic To Be Joined By Aroara

Here We Go Magic are happy to announce both Aroara and Caveman will be joining them on their upcoming North American Tour.
Aroara is a new project featuring Andrew from Broken Social Scene, along with vocalist Ariel Engle, a frequent collaborator in the BSS live show. Their shows with HWGM mark their premiere as a live act. Andrew is also a member of Apostle of Hustle. HWGM toured both Europe and Canada with Broken Social Scene in 2010.
The tour is in support of The January EP. The EP's six tracks complete the songwriting cycle that Here We Go Magic began in an upstate New York farm house upon the commencement of their critically-acclaimed sophomore LP Pigeons (2010, Secretly Canadian). The band's signature mix of swirling guitars, krautrock grooves, pulsing synths, and hushed chants provide a foundation for these otherworldly songs.
"Hands in the Sky" is a ghostly number that showcases vocalist Luke Temple's lyrical pedigree, his words pushed forward in lockstep with a band heaven-bent on window dressing your headspace like a cosmos for the 20 minutes they've got your attention. At the center of the EP lies what Here We Go Magic does best, a dichotomy between eerie folk sounds and driving art rock. The jangly back-and-forth between the guitars of Michael Bloch and Temple form the backbone to "Song In Three," the yin to Pigeons standout "Collector"'s yang. Cyclical in its instrumentation and lyrics, the spooky lullaby "Hollywood" climaxes with a mantra that wouldn't have been out of place on the band's 2009 self-titled release.
The January EP was produced by Jen Turner and recorded live to analog tape in a band-built living room studio.
Pre-order now available through the Secretly Canadian website, all pre-orders also come with a download card for the EP.

French Horn Rebellion Release Debut LP & Tour

French Horn Rebellion (Robert and David Perlick-Molinari) kick off 2011 by announcing the US self-release of their debut album The Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion on April 19th digitally and May 24th physically (Once Upon A Time Records) and a 27 date North American tour supporting French electro pop outfit Yelle starting 17th April.

Written, produced and mixed by Robert and David, The Infinite Music… is a debut album that warps the fabric of dance, electro, rock and funk and may just turn out to be a contender for this year’s most ambitious, multi-faceted and engaging debut album. Crucially, the album also follows an intergalactic narrative that tracks the physical and emotional journey of an unknown French Horn player. “There is a story running through the album, it’s about the Universe. We’re pretty clear on what the story is, but what you take away from it may be something entirely different,” says David.

The album’s artwork features the sculptures of Portland based artist Meredith Dittmar (www.corporatepig.com) who the band contacted after finding her work on the Internet. Dittmar has exhibited in New York and as far afield as, Mexico City and Istanbul.

On the back of just three EP’s to date, these two unassuming brothers, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have already toured and played with the likes of Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells, The Drums, Cut Copy and SebastiAn and have been tipped by everyone from Q Magazine, The Guardian, Time Out and French music bible Les Inrockuptibles to hometown publications such as The New York Times and NY Daily News.

The Brooklyn-based duo already had an illustrious pedigree; David produced MGMT's indie release, Time to Pretend EP for New York indie Cantora Records, and with previous single “Up All Night” they scored a Record of the Week on BBC Radio 1 and an opening slot on the influential Kitsuné Maison compilation series; a big deal for a virtual unknown. The band have also remixed the likes of MEN, Two Door Cinema Club, OMD and Alex Winston, the later resulting in JPlatt of New York producers du jour The Knocks madly tweeting “its like the hottest thing I’ve ever heard”!

Following packed out NYC performances at CMJ, the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival and in support to MNDR at the launch of new Neon Gold / Popjustice party POPSHOP, FHR will visit Europe in March for a handful of shows before heading home to play SXSW and then on to Asia for shows in Hong Kong (w/ MGMT), China, Korea and Japan. Their 27 date North American tour supporting Yelle kicks off in Phoenix on 17th April.]

Marshall Crenshaw celebrates 30th anniversary with special NYC shows

“His intelligence, integrity, and passion for the great song always show up in his music,” wrote Robert Christgau in his Consumer Guide of Marshall Crenshaw. Over a span of 30 years, Crenshaw has released 13 albums, all of which have received the highest marks from critics and have earned him a fiercely local fan base. And now as Crenshaw prepares to transition from releasing physical albums to making his new music available in a subscription series to be announced soon, he will celebrate his first 30 years of recording in a special three-nighter at City Winery, 155 Varick St. in New York on Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, which are already sold out, with Sunday, May 1 just added. For information, click here.

Crenshaw will perform his debut single and his self-titled debut album in sequence, adding as many other hits and favorites as time permits. He will be joined by Yo La Tengo guitarist Ira Kaplan, longtime associate Graham Maby on bass, drummer Josh Dion, and on the 29th by original drummer (and brother) Robert Crenshaw.

According to Crenshaw, “The emphasis in the advertising, etc. has been on my first album but this year actually marks the 30-year anniversary of the release of ‘Something’s Gonna Happen’ on Shake Records, my first record, and a really, really darn good one, produced by the late Alan Betrock and myself.  Therefore, this year marks my 30th year as a recording artist . . . amazing. It’s crazy!! Holy @!*&&^%!!!

“In 1978, by chance, not by design, I landed in New York City (with my wife) and the next few years were something like a whirlwind. We still do and always will look back on those days with great fondness; these anniversary shows will give me and everyone else in the room on those nights a chance to celebrate those times.”

“As it stands now we’re planning on mostly focusing on early repertoire, sprinkling in some middle period stuff, even some brand new stuff,” Crenshaw says. “I’m normally not that big on nostalgia and don’t plan to make a habit of it, but sometimes it can be a sweet feeling, harmless fun, etc.”

Rolling Stone, in its review of Crenshaw’s first long-player, called the album “1982's most gorgeous singer-songwriter debut,” adding, “every song here sounds like a classic.” Said Creem: “Marshall’s songs are perfect unto themselves — melodies, jaunty rhythms, super fine love lyrics and an exactly executed production that gives the songs a final and finished veneer when put on vinyl.”

Indeed, it was 1981 when Detroit-area native Crenshaw released his first single, “Something’s Gonna Happen” b/w “She Can’t Dance,” on New York Rocker founder Alan Betrock’s Shake Records label. The collectors’ site Discog calls it “As truly romantic, energetic and catchy as any early Beatles, British Invasion or Buddy Holly top hit record.” From it came the Warner Brothers contract that produced such classics as “(You’re My) Favorite Waste of Time,” “Someday Someway,” “Whenever You’re On My Mind” and “Cynical Girl.” The great songs continued with the Life’s Too Short album on MCA (“Fantastic Planet of Love”), three albums for Razor & Tie and the 2009 release Jaggedland (“Someone Told Me,” “Passing Through,” “Never Coming Down”). The Onion’s “A.V. Club” cited Jaggedland’s “sophisticated, warm, and carefully crafted melodies,” while SonicBoomers called it, “as good as anything he’s ever done,” adding, “There is a freshness of spirit to all these songs, like the artist is just starting out instead of being 30 years into a career.”

As The New York Times noted, “Mr. Crenshaw’s songs seem to roll off the guitar in a casual blend of pre-1970s styles — folk-rock, surf-rock, country and above all the Beatles — that put melody first. With his winsome tenor, he delves into the ways love goes right and goes wrong, from distant yearning to the aftermath of infidelity, hiding turmoil within the chiming tunes.”

And the Denver Post, reviewing a show from Crenshaw’s most recent tour, stated, “Crenshaw’s best songs, replete with irresistible hooks and perfect for his voice, are what drew critics and listeners from the beginning. Yet, in live performances, as well as on record, Crenshaw’s noted guitar talents shine through.”

As well as celebrating the first 30 years, the City Winery shows will mark the end of the album era for Crenshaw, who will shortly elaborate on plans to offer a subscription series to a quarterly series of vinyl and digital EPs, which will be available from his web site and other locations.

Further reflecting on his 30-year-old debut 45 RPM recording, Crenshaw notes, “I know that on that night I’ll be thinking of Alan Betrock. We already had some momentum on a couple of fronts: Robert Gordon’s version of ‘Someday Someway’ was causing a big sensation on NY radio, our club gigs were creating a lot of excitement, the press was getting on board, etc., but when Alan stepped into the picture it really put the pedal to the metal. We made a great record, my first, and really, I’d wanted to make a record with my name on it since I was a little kid. Alan put us in touch with another mover and shaker, the great Andy Schwartz, who had taken over New York Rocker magazine from Alan. There were others but that magazine was one of my bibles at the time; in fact I’d met Alan by responding to an ad that he’d run in the magazine announcing the launching of Shake Records.

“These guys had clout and credibility, not just with me but with everybody who was cool and involved with rock music in the city. Pretty soon ‘Something’s Gonna Happen’ was on the radio right alongside of Robert Gordon’s ‘Someday Someway’ and we were officially a big deal on the New York rock scene, something I was hugely proud of, and hopefully not too arrogant behind.”

And looking toward the three dates at City Winery, Crenshaw says, “I’m excited to say that joining us on guitar all weekend, all night long, will be the great Ira Kaplan, somebody who really knows how to spice up the proceedings.”

Here We Go Magic Announce North American Spring Tour

Here We Go Magic are hitting the road once again bringing their electric show to audiences across the US. They'll be joined by Brooklyn cohorts Cavemen in the lead up to their debut Coachella performance.

Video Premiere | YELLOWBIRDS "The Rest Of My Life"

Yellowbirds is the moniker for the latest musical exploits of Sam Cohen--guitarist/songwriter/vocalist in the psychedelic collective Apollo Sunshine. Cohen grew up in Houston, Texas, and while the Texas of his teens may have been home to Big Oil, Enron, the Bush family, and the drab grey Astros jerseys of the 90s, he prefers to think of it as the Texas of yore, home to: Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, the Space Program, and rainbow orange Astros jerseys.  It stands to reason, then, that his current home of New York City must be the mythical Empire City: Rocky Mountains of architecture, epicenter of modern art, home to Charles Mingus and The Velvet Underground.

It was with these timeless inspirations in mind that Sam Cohen created Yellowbirds’ The Color, out now on Brooklyn label, Royal Potato Family. Double-speed auto-harp glissandos, glowing backwards pedal steel, bubbling echo and fuzz guitars coalesce into a warm wall of sound.  As existential lyrical themes emerge, delivered over psyched-out aural landscapes, the picture emerges of a dust-blown, 4th dimensional Future West.  This is Cohen's quixotic world where "only the purist tones can be heard."

Yellowbirds' new stop-motion, collage-animation video for the song "The Rest Of My Life" was crafted by Sam Cohen from nearly 3000 still photos assembled into collages and animated by hand.  Between exploring images, cutting and compiling, creating the scenes and editing the footage, the project took ten weeks to complete.

Christopher Paul Stelling Reveals NYC Residency

Christopher Paul Stelling arrived in New York City in 2008 with nothing but his guitar and a duffel bag. Not necessarily concerned with making a name for himself, circumstance and necessity soon found him singing and playing guitar on the subway platforms. Although he still turns heads while playing in the subway every now and then, Stelling has since graced some of New York’s finest stages, and now we’re thrilled to announce his Rockwood Music Hall residency April, taking place each Tuesday night at 8pm.

CPS also took time to link up with Break Thru Radio to film a compelling video for “Flawless Executioner,” which was recorded in a horse stable near Prospect Park in Brookyln. The video went live today, so head over to BTR and check it out!

The years prior to Stelling’s arrival in Brooklyn had seen him through something of an odyssey. He’s studied under a master guitar builder in Colorado, slept in a closet in North Carolina, managed a used bookstore in Florida, and wandered aimlessly through Seattle, all without a said plan in mind- and completely unaware that something was being stitched together beneath it all.

His guitar playing style would seem more appropriate for a man twice his age, bringing to mind the likes of Leo Kottke, John Fahey, and Sandy Bull. His songwriting reaches deep, tugging emotional heartstrings, all while conjuring up imagery from religion, mythology and folklore.  Having already self-released a 20 song album on his own, and a live session with Daytrotter, his first official full-length is currently in the works.
