Jethro Tull Returns to Red Rocks!

Jethro Tull and Kansas will be performing at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 18300 West Alameda Parkways, in Morrison, CO on June 8.  The show starts at 7:30 PM.  Tickets are $49.50 and $84.50, plus applicable service fees.  The venue phone is 800-745-3000, and the website.

In celebration of the park bench, dribbly-nosed voyeur's 40th Anniversary, Ian Anderson returns to the USA with his band Jethro Tull, starting June 8 in Denver, CO and ending on the 26 in Chicago, IL.

The group features longtime members Ian Anderson (flute, vocals, acoustic guitar) and Martin Barre (guitars), Doane Perry (drums), as well as David Goodier (bass) and pianist John O'Hara.  The latter two joined in 2006 after working with Ian on some of his solo projects.

The group will be performing the Aqualung album in its entirety plus a range of their other favorites from the lat 42 years.  Critics dubbed AQUALUNG “a concept album,” particularly for Ian's critical, skeptical views of organized religion, mostly on side B ("My God," "Hymn 43"). Anderson has disputed - almost resented - the assessment seeing the record as "just a bunch of songs." This led the band to give the critics a full-blown concept album with the following studio release THICK AS A BRICK which topped the Billboard charts in 1972.

On AQUALUNG, the group explores the struggles of the less fortunate in our society (e.g., "Aqualung," "Cross-Eyed Mary," "Up to Me"). Teenage angst and formal education difficulties (e.g., "Wind Up") are explored, and Ian returns to his parental themes with "Cheap Day Return," a tune encompassing Anderson's feelings while traveling North on the train to visit his sick father. "Locomotive Breath" touches on the issues of globalization, population expansion and runaway economics. Sound familiar?

Formed in 1968, Jethro Tull released its first album THIS WAS late in that year and followed up in 1969 with STAND UP.  In the 1970s, the group was one of the most successful live performing acts on the world stage, rivaling Zeppelin, Elton John and even the Rolling Stones. Surprising, really, for a group whose more sophisticated and evolved stylistic extravagance was far from the Pop and Rock norm of that era.

With now some 30-odd albums to their credit and sales totaling more than 50 million, the apparently un-commercial Tull continues to perform over a 100 concerts per year with its rich variety and depth of expression, wherever fans, young and old, want to hear Rock, Folk, Jazz and Classical-inspired music. Music for boys in long trousers and girls with brains.

In 2011, Tull will tour in Australia, Ireland, and Germany.  And Ian will perform solo shows in Germany, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Panama, Mexico, Czech Republic, the UK, Sweden, Denmark and Finland finishing with his customary charity Christmas concerts at three UK cathedrals.

In 2006, Ian was awarded a Doctorate in Literature from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement in Music and, in the New Years Honours List 2008, an MBE for services to music. In 2012, he expects to be awarded the Smithsonian Medal of Honor for smelling OK for someone his age and having ears still in proportion to the rest of his head. His bladder remains elastic and his prostate the size of a pinhead.

Tapped “Best Overall Event” by URB.COM and heralded by the Los Angeles Times as bringing “out raucous revelers as well as electronica’s elite,” UMF had its biggest year yet in 2009. With a line-up that included the launch of The Black Eyed Peas’ massive single “Boom Boom Pow” and exclusive performances by a wide range of DJs and electronic-influenced artists, last year’s UMF saw 85,000 attendees coming from 56 countries & territories, 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico.

As the world’s most famous outdoor electronic music event, UMF has won “Best Music Event” by the International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) in 2009, 2008, 2007 & 2005, “Best International Dance Music Festival” by the Ibiza DJ Awards in 2008 and “Best Festival” by the Village Voice Media New Times consecutively five years running from 2005 through 2009.

Originally created as a pure EDM (electronic dance music) festival in 1999, Ultra has grown through the years to present not only the genre’s hottest, biggest and best headline artists (The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Tiesto, Underworld, MOBY, Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk, David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, Erick Morillo, Deadmau5 and Paul Oakenfold, to name a few), but also crossover headline bands that incorporate EDM elements in their music and have a history, or new beginning in the EDM community and culture (The Cure, The Killers, The Black Eyed Peas, Santogold, The Ting Tings, The Bravery).

PRAANG Returns To Cervantes for Two-Night Stint

photo by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Formed under a blanket of thick Colorado snow during the blizzard of 2006, PRAANG returns to Cervantes for a two night stand December 5th and 6th. Featuring Steve Kimock, Jason Hann and Michael Travis from EOTO/String Cheese Incident and Jamie Janover from ZILLA, PRAANG represents a new musical avenue for the four members to travel. Completely improvisational, spontaneous, and unrehearsed, the quartet's music reflects their fateful existence.

Originally scheduled to be a Kimock, Vega, White and Banyan gig one December night in 2006, plans were dashed as Kimock was the only member not stranded by an infamous blizzard. Making their way to Cervantes later that evening, Hann, Travis and Janover substituted for the stranded band members, and PRAANG was born. Mixing Kimock's blistering and masterful guitar work, Hann's perpetual and incessant groovin', 'Travis' and Janover's musical innovation, and Janover's flurries of hammer dulcimer and percussive embellishment, the quartet is a fresh and exciting project of intricate guitar leads and exotic rhythms.

Steve Kimock, known for his uncanny guitar prowess, leaves his musical mark through his many collaborations. From the Steve Kimock Band to KVMS to his recent work with Billy Goodman, Bob Weir (Ratdog), and Mickey Hart (Rhythm Devils and Mickey Hart Band), Kimock is a true working man's genre-bending guitarist. Jason Hann and Michael Travis, known primarily for work with String Cheese Incident and their present venture, EOTO, bring a new-groove/electronica/tribal/acid jazz aspect to the PRAANG project. From groovy slap bass to syncopated measures, the two provide the musical backbone to complement Kimock's melodic tapestries. Contributing additional innovative rhythms is Jamie Janover, a true pioneer on the musical scene. Maintaining a rigorous touring schedule with numerous projects and worldly travels, Janover's percussion skills are unmatched.

John Popper Project Returns to Colorado

Photos courtesy of Tsunami Music Publicity- for the Grateful Web

When legendary front man / harpist John Popper and company return to Colorado, audiences throughout the Rocky Mountain State will be treated to an entirely unique, yet thoroughly organic experience. For seven nights, the John Popper Project featuring DJ Logic deliver their inimitable blend of experimental rock, jazz, and hip-hop fusion straight from the heart of four highly touted musicians and performers.

Bolstered by John Popper's mind bending harp prowess and machine gun vocal delivery, the John Popper Project serve up blistering dishes of bluesy-pop breaks and jazz fusion grooves. With Tad Kinchla's (Blues Traveler) meandering bass lines locked tightly with Marcus Bleecker's (Mosaic) danceable rhythms and DJ Logic's ever tasteful turntable percussion and accents, the four piece is completely comfortable within the boundaries of a well crafted studio pop gem or a spontaneous, all-out, live show improvisation.

From an auspicious union between Popper and DJ Logic in 2003, the special JPP chemistry is effortlessly recognizable within the group. "From the beginning the four of us immediately realized that our musical conversations are unique. We look forward to sharing that special Popper Project throw-down with audiences any chance we get," shares DJ Logic. John Popper adds, "Whether you want to dance to it, drink to it or smoke to it, the John Popper Project is musical exploration meant to be enjoyed, all in good fun."

The John Popper Project has proven to be enjoyable by lifelong fans of Blues Traveler and DJ Logic, all while reaching new audiences along the way. Even in the midst of their own hectic touring schedules, the chemistry shared between the four always leads them to take a time out for a few special JPP performances. The one-week-plus stint of Colorado dates promises to be no different

Tony Furtado Returns To The Boulder Theater

As the temperature falls and we add another layer to our Colorado uniform, it certainly feels like that time of year when tradition runs deep. The return of Tony Furtado to the Boulder Theater kept in traditional stride as he remained true to his Thanksgiving Day appearance and brought his genre bending songs to the familiar Boulder audience. Those of us present Friday night were fed a healthy serving of some good ol' fashioned Rocky Mountain pickin' turned electric.

Tony came in tow with his banjo and guitar back from his new home in Portland and managed to scrounge up some familiar Boulder musicians, The Tony Furtado Band. Tonight the band featured Matt Spencer on bass, Christian Teele on drums, Ross Martin on electric guitar and Tony on banjo, guitar and vocals.

The crowd spiritedly welcomed Tony and the band to the stage and the dance floor came alive. Tony Furtado and his banjo stylings present themselves as country rock songs with a tinge of bluegrass - or country songs with a dab of rock depending on what side of the Mississippi you grew up on. In actuality though, the music is best left unlabeled and should merely be absorbed for its truly original compositions and melodic jams. The electric banjo work is subtle, yet intricate, and you can feel Furtado's inspiration in each pluck. His songwriting skills seem acute as ever and Tony's acoustic guitar diligence showcases his years of creative experience and exploration. A student turned master of the slide guitar, Furtado was mainly picking and strumming this evening and why not when it sounds/feels so good.

Matt Spencer had a noteworthy bass solo that smoothly bounced back into a full band swing and the crowd was also treated to a cover of Tom Petty's Runnin' Down A Dream. It's also a pleasure to hear Ross Martin on some electric guitar. He plays a very meandering, almost whispering lead that is a distinct departure from when he picks on his acoustic.  The crowd participated in an impromptu sing along during a re-vamped version of the story of Stagger Lee as Tony and Ross volleyed solos and the entire band seemed to be having fun while the audience fed off the energy.

The night proved to be a festive evening of familial celebration and musical jubilation. From old classics to zestful covers, The Tony Furtado Band played a solid set of eclectic songs to an obviously appreciative Boulder Theater crowd.
