The Hal Galper Trio plays Birdland

Disbanding his trio in 2000 after ten years of touring internationally, Grammy winning jazz pianist Hal Galper spent the following six years “in the shed” studying, practicing and developing his uniquely original style of playing. The Trio features cutting edge Rubato style group improvisation that emphasizes spontaneity, texture and interaction. With over 90 recordings to his credit, 30 of which as leader, Hal Galper is best known for his work with Chet Baker, Cannonball Adderley, The Brecker Brothers, John Scofield and the Phil Woods Quintet.

THE MOTET PLAYS THE MUSIC OF SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE

For this show The Motet will be joined by some phenomenal musicians from the west coast. In addition to Motet regulars Dave Watts, Joey Porter, and Dominic Lalli, they will be featuring former Sly and the Family Stone guitarist: GAIL MULDROW

Gail played on the 1975 Sly and the Family Stone record "I get High on You" and has recorded and toured extensively with Sly bassist Larry Graham's Graham Central Station. In addition she has also toured with Merle Saunders and JGB (among countless other artists and groups). Gail is a fantastic vocalist as well as a slamming funk guitar player so she will undoubtedly be a huge addition to this year's line-up.

Also, The Motet is bringing in from Portland Oregon our ever popular vocalist Jans Ingber, singer extraordinaire Paul Creighton, and the most raw and funky bassist west of the Willamette: Dan Scollard. And last but certainly not least, the omni-present and always charming Cecil 'P-Nut' Daniels will be joining us with his futuristic electrotrumpet!

Deastro Plays DENVER At Larimer Lounge on 11.21 With Max Tundra

The title of Deastro's "Tone Adventure #3" may evoke a "working  title"-like looseness--why name a song when you can simply number it?--but the track itself is one of Moondagger's tightest. "Tone Adventure #3" is an archetypal Deastro song, as Randolph Chabot sprints through catchy, melodic passages with maniacal conviction, howling about feet being "strapped to cannon balls" from behind a wall of computer-generated atmosphere. In keeping with its title, "Tone Adventure #3" is more psychedelic than much of Moondagger, warping its instruments into unrecognizable, mutant sound-entities. Glockenspiels, spy-movie guitars, orchestral stabs, and alien ray guns all make appearances--as they should in any good adventure.

On "Tone Adventure #3"'s B-side, Toronto electro producer I Am Robot And Proud remixes Moondagger's "Greens, Grays, and Nordics" into a joyous, MIDI-fueled daydream. The song's previously sinister tone gets the lo-fi electronics treatment from the Robot's gleeful presets--the re-harmonized final chorus alone is worth the price of admission.

Randolph Chabot has been making albums since he was 12 years old -- now, at 22, the Detroit-based musician known as Deastro is ready for his close-up.

"Vermillion Plaza" the second single from Deastro's upcoming full-length debut Moondagger, miniaturizes the album's best assets and shoots them out of a cannon. Plucky synth arpeggios, end-of-the-world choruses, joyously careening melody lines--it's all there, squashed into a life-affirming three minutes and 50 seconds. When Chabot pleads for contact, singing, "Would you be my son / 'cause all of mine have died?," it's less a cry of self-pity than an exhilarating salute to the power of human connection.

Recently, Chicago-based photographer/videographer James P. Morse--a longtime friend and collaborator of Ghostly's--followed Chabot around Detroit for a day and edited the footage into "Ghostly Presents: Deastro," a video profile whose warm, colorful aesthetic matches Chabot's energy and positivity to a T. Chabot putters around his Detroit home, visits his favorite bookstore, gushes about Isaac Asimov and Simone de Beauvoir, and plays a sweaty, packed show with his band. It's a loving portrait of an artist who stays true to his beliefs, staying passionate, engaged, and creative in all of his endeavors.

Deastro's full-band debut, Moondagger, arrived on June 23rd, on Ghostly International.

Tiësto On Jonsi: "Working with Jonsi was inspiring.  Sigur Ros is one of my favorite bands of all time, so getting a chance to collaborate was very special for me.  I flew to see them in Chicago when the band was on tour and we met up again a few times after that.  I wrote the track and Jonsi came back with beautiful lyrics and melodies. Kaleidoscope became the title track for my new album because it captures the essence of what I was trying to do...to work with different people and trade ideas, hopefully resulting in an album that is unique and uplifting."

Elana James Inks New Deal, Plays Fuji Rock Fest & Keeps Swingin' For Fences

Photo by Richard Dowdy, 2007- for the Grateful Web

The North Carolina-based music mavens at Redeye will be handling North American distribution of the eponymous solo debut disc by singer, violinist and songwriter Elana James beginning Tuesday, July 24. The move will make the ebullient, eclectic collection of town 'n' country swing available at most major nationwide chains-including Borders as well as in hundreds of discerning, independently-owned stores.

James began enchanting listeners in 1998 as co-leader (with Whit Smith) of the Austin-based Hot Club of Cowtown, a refreshing, nimble-fingered combo that merged the sophisticated, high-stepping sizzle of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's Quintet of the Hot Club of France with the driving energy of Western swing.

Buoyed by five critically-acclaimed discs and live shows imbued with an almost punk-rock energy, the Hot Club was on the verge of a popular breakthrough when, just after opening all of Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson's ground breaking 2004 summer tour of American minor league ballparks, the group disbanded.

Still reeling from the breakup, the young musician had only begun weighing future options when the two musical godfathers whose very tour ushered the demise of the Hot Club stepped in with offers that could not be refused.

First, veteran producer Fred Foster called James with an invitation to play twin fiddle parts with the legendary Texas Playboy Johnny Gimble on Willie Nelson's next record. Almost immediately after that call came an invitation to play in Dylan's touring band.

"When I got that call," Elana remembers, "It was so incredible - I felt like God had reached down out of heaven and anointed me with a golden wand."

The Dylan slot ended up expanding to two full tours (one as the fiddle player for Dylan himself complete with prominent positioning in the shows), but James experienced a real revelation before the first tour was even complete:  Oddly enough, performing with arguably the greatest, most-revered songwriter of the last 50 years gave her the confidence to pursue a similar path leading her own band.

". . .He's peerless at what he does, and yet he's still doing exactly the same thing as everyone else," she notes. "And it made me realize that if I started my own thing, there's a lot of dignity in just doing it; you don't have to worry about who you're playing for, you don't have to worry about how it's received, you just have to do it."

Elana James began recording her self-titled debut album in 2005, but a second Dylan tour delayed completion of the recording until the summer of 2006, with assorted finishing details further setting back the release.

But by any measure, the elegant Elana James is more than worth the wait, presenting an artist brimming with talent, self-assurance and a strong musical vision that encompasses string-jazz and country roots as well as displaying - through a half-dozen artfully-drawn original tunes, Elana's rare gift for truly integrating lyrical content with melody and tone.

Through it all, James' clearwater, emotionally - transparent vocal delivery is the ideal vehicle for her uniquely personal world view, and her violin playing slips with a natural grace from bold, charismatic leads to empathetic ensemble playing and back again.

The legendary swing fiddler Johnny Gimble illuminates a pair of traditional Western Swing fiddle tunes, pairing his inimitable style with Elana's on his own arrangement of "Silver Bells" and using electric mandolin to spar with James' violin on an immaculate, up-to-date rendition of "Goodbye Liza Jane."

With knowing, soulful nods to Duke Ellington ("I Got It Band (And That Ain't Good)" and "I Don't Mind") and Eubie Blake (a luscious "Memories of You" ), Elana James - with and her fine, hand-picked cohorts - further extends her impressive musical palette and wide-ranging love-and command - of American music.

Willie Nelson lauds James as "a beautiful voice, a fantastic musician with the heart and soul of an angel."  He neglected to mention that she's smart and beautiful, too, but it's a sure bet he noticed.

(Elana James is currently available through such online outlets as Amazon.com, CDBaby, Miles of Music, etc.).

Dr. John plays ETOWN

Review of the live taping of the eTown variety show at the Boulder Theatre in Boulder, CO, featuring the great Dr. John and new singer-songwriter Billy Miles on March 23 2005.

Last night I attended a live musical event which was much different than the concerts that I am used to.  I went to my second live broadcasting of the national radio show called etown.
