My Morning Jacket Share Title Track from New Album Circuital

Nearly three years since their last release, My Morning Jacket are now on the cusp of releasing the eagerly awaited new album, Circuital (ATO Records, May 31st).  The band has been gearing it all up by releasing songs from each of their five Terminal 5 shows this past October.  Today, My Morning Jacket are giving us a taste of the new album by sharing the title track and revealing it's enigmatic cover art.

The Greencards' new 'The Brick Album' features Vince Gill, Sam Bush

From the first notes struck together in 2003 through tours with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, up to and beyond their fourth studio album in 2009, The Greencards have won steadily escalating acclaim for their multi-dimensional Americana vision. Each step they’ve taken has widened their appeal. Their releases have topped the Billboard Bluegrass charts. In both 2008 (for their Viridian album) and 2010 (for Fascination), they were nominated for Grammy Awards in the “Best Country Instrumental” category. They’ve earned ovations from “newgrass” music devotees at MerleFest and from indie-rock loyalists at Lollapalooza and the Austin City Limits Festival. RollingStone.com noted, “This imported band is creating some of the finest Americana around.”

But this four-piece band, spearheaded by Australians Carol Young and Kym Warner, is interested less in past accomplishments than in looking ahead for new goals to achieve. Produced and engineered by studio veteran Justin Niebank (Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, Keith Urban), The Brick Album on the band’s own Darling Street Records is the first to successfully infuse The Greencards’ eclectic musical references with the excitement they generate onstage.

“We’ve been striving for this since our first record,” says mandolinist Warner. “We recorded totally in one room this time, with very little isolation. It was all about doing the performance now, without going back to add anything later on.”

“What you’re hearing is all one take,” bassist and singer Young adds. “If someone really didn’t like what we’d done, we’d play it all again from the top rather than drop the part in. When you drop in a part, you lose a little bit of the feel. You’ve got to get a run-up to it.”

That immediacy was heightened by the addition of two new members of the group. Tyler Andal, a young fiddle whiz from Tennessee, reinforces both The Greencards’ grounding in roots music and their eagerness to let in the fresh air of newgrass, rock, folk elements, Latin America and much more. “He thinks outside the box,” Warner explains. “We’ve always had a strong rhythmic aspect to our music, and Tyler definitely brings that.”

The other recent arrival, former National Flatpicking Championship winner Carl Miner, excels as a guitarist in that tradition but more importantly applies his virtuosity equally well beyond it. “He’s good at everything,” Warner says. “He’s one of the most versatile musicians, and probably the most consistent, we’ve ever played with. With Tyler and him in the band, everyone is pulling in the same direction.”

Make that “directions.” The Brick Album kicks off with “Make It Out West,” a rhythmically irresistible chant powered by guest artist Sam Bush’s slide mandolin, with lyrics conjuring restless dreams and far horizons. From there the songs take listeners through ever-changing vistas — the Spanish-inflected “Heart Fixer,” whose vocals by Young and guest artist Vince Gill stir memories of Marty Robbins; the slinky, teasing “Mrs. Madness,” written by Warner after a night of watching Bored to Death; the magical “Girl in the Telescope,” which floats like a feather in sunlight; “Tale of KangaRio,” an intimate Brazilian dance of mandolin and guitar; “Loving You Is the Only Way To Fly,” a dreamy evocation of the Louvin and Everly Brothers, the pillars of classic country duet vocals.

There’s much more, but two tracks bear special mention. The wistful “Faded” is a sweetly harmonized tune, so natural that you don’t even notice its unusual 5/4 time signature. Similarly, “Adelaide” is a brisk instrumental, built over a rushing stream of chord changes made accessible by melodies and solos of eloquent coherence.

“As we get older, the more I think about it, the more we want something in music you can cling to,” Warner says. “That comes with melody. What we do on The Brick Album allows us to have something not only on the record but also on our live show. It brings it back to “more than anything, this is about lyrics and harmony.”

It’s also about integrating fans more than ever into the band’s process. The Greencards followed an independent path with The Brick Album, partnering with its followers rather than with record labels to fund its sessions. In exchange for contributing to the “Buy A Brick” project, each donor had his or her name permanently inscribed on a brick within the wall that comprises its cover art.

“The times have changed a lot in the music industry, not so much in the creative side but in business side of making music,” Warner says. “We just wanted to give something unique and special to people, not just by sending them an early copy of the record by putting their names on the artwork. That makes them fully a part of it.”

But it’s the music that makes us all part of this journey. Warner and Young were both steeped in country music; she charted several No. 1 singles in her homeland as a solo artist and he won the Australian National Bluegrass Mandolin Championship for four consecutive years. They moved to Austin, put together the first incarnation of The Greencards there and today call Nashville home.

Along the way, they have picked up some influential fans. Their 2009 release, Fascination, prompted Rosanne Cash to say, “The Greencards are a little island of truth and beauty in a sea of artifice and mediocrity. What a fine group, and what a great collection of songs.” Buddy Miller called it one of the year’s “most inventive discs.”

With this new release, the world becomes more than ever The Greencards’ stage. Their sound defies category, balancing taste and technique, engaging lyrics and melodies and wildly creative arrangements. There may be a wall on The Brick Album’s cover, but the future suggested on these tracks knows no barrier.

Jóhann Jóhannson To Release The Miners Hymns June 7th

Icelandic composer/arranger/electronics-manipulator Jóhann Jóhannson’s first release for FatCat, The Miners’ Hymns, is the score to an exciting collaboration with filmmaker Bill Morrison (best known for his masterpiece Decasia, heralded by the Village Voice as “the most widely-acclaimed American avant-garde film of the fin-de-siecle”). Their film/music project treats the history of Northeast England’s mining community using gorgeous found footage and a brass-based score, which moves from dark and brooding minimalism to moments of rousing transcendence. The Miners’ Hymns album will be released in the U.S. on June 7.

Centered around the Durham coalfield in Northeast England, The Miners’ Hymns film focuses on the hardships of pit work, the powerful role trade unions have historically played in bettering the lives of miners, and the trade unions’ battles with police during the famous 1984 strikes. The film was initially commissioned for Durham County (UK) Council’s International Brass Festival, which incorporated the annual Miners’ Gala into a program celebrating the cultural history of mining with a strong focus on the regional tradition of colliery brass bands. It was created from BFI, BBC, and other archival footage and produced by British artist organization Forma. Immaculately edited, and almost entirely in black-and-white, the film intercuts footage spanning the past 100 years, serving, as Jóhannson puts it, as “a kind of requiem for a disappearing industry, but also a celebration of the culture, life, and struggle of coal miners.”

The Miners’ Hymns marks a welcome return to brass instrumentation for Jóhannson, whose recent work has paired his electronics primarily with strings. Performed and record live by a sixteen-piece brass ensemble (whose ranks included players in the current incarnation of a brass band started by miners in 1877) led by Iceland’s Gudni Franzson, the score is at times lamenting, lyrical, almost droning; elsewhere led by sweepingly triumphant chords and pulse-quickening crescendo. Combined with the ensemble and the huge Durham Cathedral organ, Jóhannson’s own subtle electronics peek through gaps in the score like shafts of life through the church’s stained-glass windows, adding quiet, otherworldly brightness.

The beautifully-packaged CD release of The Miners’ Hymns includes liner notes giving an overview of the historical importance of brass band music in the history of English coalmining and the rise of trade unions, as well as archival photos, film stills, and shots of the recorded performance inside the great Cathedral.

Jóhannson's music has also recently been used for film in a quite different context, soundtracking a much talked-about trailer for the blockbuster film Battle: Los Angeles; watch the trailer here.

The Miners’ Hymns is a featured selection of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Jóhann Jóhannson will be touring later this year in support of the album.

French Horn Rebellion Release Debut LP & Tour

French Horn Rebellion (Robert and David Perlick-Molinari) kick off 2011 by announcing the US self-release of their debut album The Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion on April 19th digitally and May 24th physically (Once Upon A Time Records) and a 27 date North American tour supporting French electro pop outfit Yelle starting 17th April.

Written, produced and mixed by Robert and David, The Infinite Music… is a debut album that warps the fabric of dance, electro, rock and funk and may just turn out to be a contender for this year’s most ambitious, multi-faceted and engaging debut album. Crucially, the album also follows an intergalactic narrative that tracks the physical and emotional journey of an unknown French Horn player. “There is a story running through the album, it’s about the Universe. We’re pretty clear on what the story is, but what you take away from it may be something entirely different,” says David.

The album’s artwork features the sculptures of Portland based artist Meredith Dittmar (www.corporatepig.com) who the band contacted after finding her work on the Internet. Dittmar has exhibited in New York and as far afield as, Mexico City and Istanbul.

On the back of just three EP’s to date, these two unassuming brothers, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have already toured and played with the likes of Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells, The Drums, Cut Copy and SebastiAn and have been tipped by everyone from Q Magazine, The Guardian, Time Out and French music bible Les Inrockuptibles to hometown publications such as The New York Times and NY Daily News.

The Brooklyn-based duo already had an illustrious pedigree; David produced MGMT's indie release, Time to Pretend EP for New York indie Cantora Records, and with previous single “Up All Night” they scored a Record of the Week on BBC Radio 1 and an opening slot on the influential Kitsuné Maison compilation series; a big deal for a virtual unknown. The band have also remixed the likes of MEN, Two Door Cinema Club, OMD and Alex Winston, the later resulting in JPlatt of New York producers du jour The Knocks madly tweeting “its like the hottest thing I’ve ever heard”!

Following packed out NYC performances at CMJ, the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival and in support to MNDR at the launch of new Neon Gold / Popjustice party POPSHOP, FHR will visit Europe in March for a handful of shows before heading home to play SXSW and then on to Asia for shows in Hong Kong (w/ MGMT), China, Korea and Japan. Their 27 date North American tour supporting Yelle kicks off in Phoenix on 17th April.]

They Might Be Giants MP3 Premiered on Pitchfork

They Might Be Giants new album, Join Us, is the recordings that their fans have been waiting 20 years for!  Impossibly catchy, sometimes strange and always original the album is a stunning return to form. They Might Be Giants unlikely success story started nearly three decades ago with their Dial-A-Song service. Company of Thieves Announce New Album, On Tour w/ The Whigs

The Chicago-based band Company of Thieves has announced the release of their new album, Running From A Gamble, due out via Wind-up Records on May 17th. To celebrate, the band is offering up a free MP3 from the album, in the form of the amazing track “Modern Waste.”

Running From A Gamble is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut, Ordinary Riches. Produced by Rob Schnapf, the 13-track album was written primarily by lead singer Genevieve Schatz and guitar player Marc Walloch.  Of the album, Genevieve says, “The album is a coming of age adventure about the mysterious, passionate and painful transition from dependence and enchantment to autonomy and awareness.”  The first single off Running From A Gamble will be “Death of Communication,” which hits radio this month.

Ordinary Riches was released in 2009 and landed at #5 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart.  The band landed a spot on Last Call with Carson Daly where they performed their hit single “Oscar Wilde.”  The band has built a massive fanbase from non-stop touring, performing headlining dates and also opening for bands such as OK Go and The Hold Steady, followed by duets with Daryl Hall on his hit show, “Live From Daryl’s House.”

Marcus Eaton West Coast Spring Tour

When singer-songwriter Marcus Eaton was asked to play and co-write on forthcoming album with Rock And Roll Hall of Famer, David Crosby, it was not a big surprise. Thanks to a strange turn of luck, Crosby has been a long-time influence and fan of the powerhouse performer from Boise, ID. Just one of many auspicious experiences dotting Eaton's career things are looking bright for the young performer who is taking his trio on the road for a short national tour this spring.

Known for a clear and inviting voice coupled with dazzling guitar work, Eaton and his band will be making stops in a number of key cities in support of his latest independent release As if You Had Wings (Feb, 2011) available exclusively on his website and at shows. One of five albums bearing Eaton's name, the latest release has received rave reviews with its radio-ready format and brilliant pop-friendly appeal. The band, also featuring bassist Ben Burleigh and powerhouse drummer Kevin Rogers will be playing a number of opening slots with Tim Reynolds TR3 along with a number of headlining slots booked along the way.

In just a few short years, the band who has been likened to such vaunted trios as Cream, Rush and the Police has received lavish praise from music authorities across the board including Crosby, who has courted a 2-year collaborative relationship with Eaton in the making of his latest album, yet to be released . Throughout his career, Eaton has performed at venues vast and intimate including four consecutive years alongside Dave Matthews at the 20,000-capacity Gorge Amphitheatre side stage and on a local level, his CD release party at The Knitting Factory in Boise crammed the concert hall well beyond its official 999-seat capacity.

MilkDrive Releases Studio Album ROAD FROM HOME

MilkDrive, Austin’s phenomenal alt-folk-progressive acoustic string band, will release on April 5 its debut studio album, ROAD FROM HOME, which captures the quartet’s soulful, textural, multi-layer mix of rhythms, tempos, flavors, improvisation and its harmony vocals.

After its Austin CD Release Show, on Friday, April 8, at Saxon Pub, MilkDrive plays a number of nationally acclaimed music festivals: Old Settler’s on April 14, “Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour” on May 9, Pagosa Folk N’ Bluegrass in Colorado in June, and Rockygrass in Lyons, Colo., at the end of July.
ROAD FROM HOME was recorded at Mountainside Audio Labs in Nashville, produced by MilkDrive and Bil VornDick (Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck), and engineered and mixed by VornDick.
Like its independently released debut live album, the band’s new studio album features fingers flying at “unbelievable” speed, original tunes that go beyond extraordinary and “impeccable” arrangements. Both “Back” and “Dry Creek Inn” from ROAD FROM HOME have the old-school sound, with haunting mandolin and fiddle, but thoroughly modern lyrics on topics such as love and death bring it into the 21st century.
