Orenda Fink: New Album Ask The Night Out Now

Orenda Fink's sophomore solo album Ask The Night arrived in stores on Tuesday. Following her heralded 2005 release Invisible Ones, the new album is an homage to her Southern roots and inspired by traditional American folk music and Southern Gothic literature. The album has been striking a chord with the press; the blog Captain's Dead remarked, "Orenda Fink's Ask The Night...plain and simple is a beautiful and haunting record and definitely one of my favorite sounding records of the year...Highly recommended!"

Yesterday, PasteMagazine.com premiered new album track "That Certain-Something Spring" here. A full album stream is also currently available on AOL Music's Spinner blog.  Prefix premiered her first single "High Ground" (featuring Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse) on August 25th; KCRW also named the song their 'Top Tune' on September 2nd.

Orenda will travel to New York City for the CMJ Music Marathon later this month to perform at an Oct. 21st day party presented by Rachael Ray's Feedback, The Syndicate, and Amnesty International, as well as the Saddle Creek showcase on Oct. 22nd.

RJD2 Releases New Album, The Colossus, Jan. 19, 2010

Whether it be releasing albums on labels including Definitive Jux, XL, Fondle ‘Em, Eastern Conference, or now his own label, RJ’s Electrical Connections, producing music by Diverse, Acelayone, and Dice Raw, remixing artists including Massive Attack, Mos Def, Fallout Boy, Cannibal Ox, Booker T, Polyphonic Spree, or releasing albums as Soul Position, RJD2 (aka RJ or Ramble Krohn) has been remarkably inventive and productive in creating music throughout his ten year career. And of course, this doesn’t include the work RJ has done for various television shows, including CSI, and Mad Men (for which he won his first award, ASCAP’s Best TV Theme), films, including Wimbledon and Freedomland, and commercials for brands including Saturn, ESPN, Lion’s Gate, Levi’s, Nike, and more. Throughout this constant influx of studio work, RJ has toured the world and traversed the continental US yearly, most recently with a full band. No matter the outlet throughout this decade, the goal for RJD2 has always been the same – to make a piece of music that is going to hopefully rearrange one’s brain, or at least provide some relief from real life for a moment or two. With his newest album, The Colossus, RJD2 manages to do it once again, perpetually looking forward with a clear reverence for the past.

The Colossus is RJD2’s fourth album, and the first he’ll release on his own label. In addition to re-acquiring the master recordings of his Definitive Jux catalog in its entirety and re-releasing them, this new label marks a huge step for RJ as being completely independent and working on his own terms, artistically and business-wise.

As RJ’s last album, The Third Hand, was his first truly solo album, with no guest performances whatsoever and very little sampling, he decided to move in the opposite direction on The Colossus and create an album that is as collaborative as possible, while also being an “overview” of all the different types of working approaches RJ has used over the years. Some songs are strictly sample-based; some are live; some songs are completely instrumental while others are vocal songs, some featuring guest vocalists, with RJ taking on the duty in others; he brought a few rappers on board, as well. It was all tracked at the same time and in the same place, which gives the album a cohesive feel, but it also manages to retain the diversity throughout that has become a trademark for RJD2. The Colossus features Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, Foreign Exchange), Kenna (Star Trak, VA Beach), Aaron Livingston (The Roots’ Guns Are Drawn), Columbus MC’s The Catalyst, Illogic, NP, and a slew of instrumentalists. Additionally, it marks RJ’s debut behind the drum kit.

The Colossus, out January 19, 2010 on RJ’s Electrical Connections, is RJD2’s most sonically lush and varied record he’s ever created. It is a kaleidoscopic look forward, as well as back.

EOTO: Fall Tour & New Album

The way music is produced and performed is growing at an astounding rate. >From the roots of acoustic music to amped up rock n’ roll and into the electronic revolution, the options available to the modern musician are more like a scientific lab, then the campfire jam from where it all started. From the controls of a tiny laptop, a performer now has the power to mix, change and loop sounds in a concert setting with great ease. This modern twist of technology is bringing a new level of music to the electronic dance party.

JasonWhile the genre of live electronica is relatively new on the music circuit, nobody is breaking the boundaries of live producing and improvisation like EOTO. Fusing elements of live instrumentation, house music, dubstep and electro into their dance ready sound, the band will be taking the country by storm beginning in late September for their perennial fall tour, performing 33 consecutive nights in a row.

Consisting of Michael Travis and Jason Hann the duo mixes the organic sounds of live drums, keyboards, vocals, bass, percussion, and guitar through a variety of programs and gadgets to create a style of music that is more likely found in a dance club, then a live music theater. What sets EOTO apart from other artists in this emerging genre is how the music is created. While some artists may spend hours pre-mixing samples and elements of music for their live show, EOTO uses nothing pre-recorded, giving them the ability to approach each song with on-the-spot spontaneity and 100% live improvisation.

Because of the ever-changing sound and style of music, it’s hard to describe a band like EOTO. In a recent discussion on the bands highly active Facebook page, the thousands of subscribed fans were asked to describe the band in their own words – descriptions ranged from mythical to visual, each in awe of the duo’s ability to create high octane dance music in a live setting. A trait that has fans old and new catching multiple shows on a tour and packing venues wherever they play. Or maybe EOTO is selling out venues around the coast for the spirit of dance music they bring in general. As one fan put it “It’s a raging dance party that nobody should miss. An indescribable feeling that lingers for hours“.

It should come as no surprise that the members of EOTO have performed with a range of musicians second to none. Their combined resume includes the likes of Isaac Hayes, Loreena McKinnett, Herbie Hancock, Drummers of STOMP, DJ Tequila, Les Nubians, Stanley Jordan, Les ClayPool, Joshua Redman, Arturo Sandoval, Bela Fleck, Trilok Gurtu, Charlie Hunter, Mike Marshall and Dave Grisman just to name a few. In less then 3 years, the duo has performed over 500 shows including the top festivals in North America. The machine that drives EOTO is more then just performing live music, the band also does all of their own self-management and booking for every single show they play.

Beginning in late September and performing every single night in October, EOTO will hit the road with their long-awaited studio EP called Fire the Lazers!!. This eleven-track journey into dubstep, electro and house music showcases their talents and skill in a growing dimension of music. In true EOTO spirit the album was produced with nothing planned or rehearsed, capturing only the best of what makes up their original sound. The album will be available on the road and by digital download in October of 2009.

BASSNECTAR TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM 'COZZA FRENZY'

Heads up! The brand new full-length BASSNECTAR album COZZA FRENZY drops digitally on September 29, with CDs available in stores on October 27. The first "Cozza Frenzy" single and DJ TOOLS Collection are available now at Bassnectar.net and select online retailers. A nationwide tour will launch in mid-September, sweeping through over 30 cities in North America, including headlining shows at The Fillmore in Denver, New York's Irving Plaza and the House of Blues in Chicago as well as festivals like Austin City Limits and Symbiosis in Groveland, CA.

BASSNECTAR’s own label Amorphous Music teams up with Child’s Play Records to unleash Cozza Frenzy, an amalgamation of sound that combines dubstep, electro, hip-hop, and all styles of dirty digital bass-heavy music and smashes it all into a collision of wobbling, perverted basslines, and hypnotic hide-and-seek adventures. A work three years in the making, this rich and eclectic collection of 15 songs features collaborations with artists such as Fever Ray, Zumbi of Zion I, Mr. Projectile, and Capital J.

Genres are turned upside down, sliced into half time and combined with one agenda: to delight your ears. While the live shows are explosive orgies of sound and light that literally turn into mosh pits, the album explores not only the frenzy but also the meltdown. Lush, expressive melodies and playful combinations of sound are just as much a trademark as the insane thickness and heaviness that pervades each song. It's like a variety show: some freakish songs for those moments of complete abandon, and other more melodic adventures for those moments when all you want to do is dissolve into thoughts.

"I wanted to express something emotionally visceral; reflective of the different shades of sonic mania I feel, each song having its own personality and character. I don't care if something is hip or trendy or not, I just want to give strength to feelings. This is music for people." With a rabid fan base that grows by the day, "this music" is primed to cause more than just a frenzy when it drops upon the masses September 29.

The debut single, "Cozza Frenzy," features an original head-banging, body-rocking anthem, where dubstep and electro collide beneath chopped and screwed vocals. BASSNECTAR gives his own Mega-Bass remix – a straightforward dubstep version perfect for ripping any dance floor into complete frenzy. Z-Trip’s Hellrazor Remix takes the original and flips it into a scratch track with loads of cuts and edits. Scratch DJs and turntablists will eat this alive. The single, as well as "Cozza Frenzy" DJ TOOLS Collection 1, is available now through Bassnectar.net, as well as other major online retailers. Visit http://music.bassnectar.net to download.

In support of the album launch, BASSNECTAR will be touring with a custom-built PK sound system courtesy of the Wobble Factory alongside special guests DJ Vadim, Nosaj Thing and Heavyweight Dub Champion at select cities throughout North America. Whether remixing, collaborating, writing, DJing, performing or working on constant social networking, BASSNECTAR's music is the lure, and social impact is the very sincere intention. Coinciding with the road show, the BASSNECTAR team will be working with a community of activists and organizations to generate involvement in local issues that pertain to selected cities among the tour route. Visit www.community.bassnectar.net for more information.

The Mother Hips Announce New Album & Fall Tour Dates

The Mother Hips have flown under the radar as true indie music pioneers for almost two decades.  With the release of their new album Pacific Dust (available October 27th on Camera Records), California's unsung psych-pop heroes tell their story. Hailed by critics for their "rootsy mix of 70s rock and power pop"  (pitchfork.com) and for their unflinching ability to "sing it sweet and play it dirty"  (New Yorker), on Pacific Dust The Hips' signature sound rings more genuine and relevant than ever before.

motherThe Hips - led by co-founders Tim Bluhm (vocals/guitar) and Greg Loiacono (guitar/vocals) - have been playing music for nearly 18 years, and in the process, have had the luxury of exploring and refining their craft. For the band's seventh full-length studio album, The Mother Hips have never been more primed to share their well-traveled tales - the long days and nights on the road, the gritty politics, the smart inward reflections and man, the music! - all delivered with a most appealing balance of Americana storytelling and their California-burnished rock.

Pacific Dust's compositions about penning a song in your kitchen at 3:00 am (the thundering album opener "White Falcon Fuzz"), record company politics (garage-rock boogie "Third Floor Story"), and a father and son's relationship through music (on the ballad "Young Charles Ives") indeed tell the story of many American rock bands. But here's why it matters: The Mother Hips have survived, and in fact thrived, throughout the journey - and Pacific Dust, with its bittersweet melodies, poignant lyrics, and strong and gritty musicianship, is a perfect example of why.

The Mother Hips owe most of their success to their large and loyal fanbase.  Earlier releases such as Part-Timer Goes Full, Green Hills of Earth, and Red Tandy have become almost cult classics among indie music buffs, and the band's most recent 2007 album, Kiss the Crystal Flake, offered proof that the band still continues to attract new supporters. Over the years, the band has worked with and played alongside a slew of renowned/respected colleagues including super-producer Rick Rubin, Wilco, Johnny Cash, and many others.

Today, armed with their newest release Pacific Dust, The Hips are poised to take their experience and talent to another level for this next leg of their already epic journey.

The band will tour this fall in support of Pacific Dust.  The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is as follows:

The MOTET Dig Deep with summer album release

With its 6th release, Dig Deep, The Motet once again proves that it is a group committed to exploring and pushing the sonic envelope, while still remaining dedicated to the musical traditions that have defined their sound. A heavy-horned afrobeat influence countered with a textural blanket of electronica, this album showcases the talents and strengths of the cast of characters that drummer and producer Dave Watts has assembled. Keyboardist Joey Porter lays down the funk under the coursing melodies of saxophonist Dominic Lalli in pure Motet fashion, with the ever-driving beats of Watts' masterful rhythmic production pushing the music through sonic peaks and valleys that tantalize and invigorate listeners. If you've loved The Motet for years or are just tuning in, listen up. You won't be disappointed.

The Motet is known for its revolving musicians and a breadth of musical influences, and Dig Deep plays to the strengths of many former and current members. Bassists Garrett Sayers and Paul McDaniel both shine brilliantly on Dig Deep, adding the sonic drive that is characteristic of The Motet's sound, which has steadily morphed and evolved over the last ten years. Sayers' bass solo on 'Guru' is a perfect example of his technical virtuosity, and with this, Watts as a producer has captured a quintessential Motet moment. The title track 'Dig Deep' showcases another side of The Motet low-end, heavy-bass sound, with McDaniel laying down raw grooves in an open section that is peppered with Watts' sonic explorations.

Longtime fans of The Motet will be happy to hear Jans Ingber's voice on 'Push,' a track that was born from an improvisational moment during the band's New Years 2009 show. Last featured on The Motet's 2000 release Play, Beth Quist's soaring vocals are highlighted on the Fela Kuti track 'Kalakuta Show' and the tune 'The Luxury of Doubt,' a collaborative effort with Watts. Throughout Dig Deep, percussionist Scott Messersmith adds his signature textural rhythms, anchoring the evolutionary sound of the band in its Afro-Cuban and West African roots. His contributions are particularly salient in the afrobeat tunes 'Mighty' and 'Roforofo Fight." Guitarists Mike Tiernan and Zivanni Masango both add their talents on Dig Deep, as do Danny Sears on trumpet and John Stuart on baritone saxophone. With this mix of talented musicians contributing to the album, it is no wonder the album sounds as good as it does. But at the helm is drummer Dave Watts, simultaneously embodying the roles of bandleader, musician, composer, and producer. It is Watts' creative imagination that drives Dig Deep, mixing recorded and sampled tracks that seamlessly carry the music forward throughout the album. As a drummer, Watts has been called "the human metronome." His sense of timing and polyrhythmic understanding is what has made him a force in the live music scene for over twenty years.

Dig Deep is his most in-depth exploration into production work thus far. Watts has amply represented the layered electronica-funk vibe that has begun to characterize The Motet's sound over the last few years, and he has truly "dug deep" to bring you Dig Deep.

Kyle Hollingsworth to Release New Album, Then There's Now

For more than a decade, as keyboardist for Colorado's beloved String Cheese Incident, Kyle Hollingsworth has consistently proven one of the most innovative and virtuosic musicians on the American jamband scene. Now, with the Sept. 15th release of Then There's Now (SCI Fidelity Records), his first album since the band announced a hiatus in 2007, Hollingsworth extends his reach into areas that will both delight longtime admirers and lock in countless new ones. Emphasizing his considerable songwriting skills and incorporating a plethora of surprises, Then There's Now marks the true emergence of Kyle Hollingsworth as a solo artist.

kyleFor Hollingsworth, who has recently been more prolific than ever before, the title of Then There's Now offers the first clue as to where he stands today. Then There's Now undeniably draws on Hollingsworth's past affiliation with "The Cheese," using his previous work as a jumping off point-yes, there are some intoxicating, if more concise, jams to be savored. But the album's "now" component-irresistible melodies, poignant lyrics and fine-tuned song construction, plus a willingness to infuse the tunes with elements of pop, jazz, electronica, hip-hop and more-transports Hollingsworth into musical realms he's never before explored at length.

Look for Hollingsworth on tour this fall in support of Then There's Now.  Tour dates to be announced soon.

The Motet Dig Deep: New Album Release!

Packed with all new material and masterfully produced by drummer Dave Watts, The Motet’s highly anticipated studio release, Dig Deep, will be celebrated in true Motet fashion with three CD release parties in Colorado starting July 9th. Dig Deep is a tapestry of sound that pushes the expectations of any listener who is familiar with the band’s signature mix of afrobeat, electronica, funk, and jazz. Albino! joins The Motet for the three night party, which opens at the Boulder Theater on July 9th, moves south to Cervantes’s Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver on July 10th, and then wraps up at The Mishawaka Amphitheater in Bellvue, CO on July 11.

motetDig Deep presents The Motet revisited and refreshed, showcasing 12 great musicians who have contributed to the band over the years. Much of the material is geared toward the studio setting rather than their famed live shows, which is evident in Watts’ rich production of interweaving rhythms and melodies. But in addition, every song on the 11-track album expresses the talents of these great musicians and plays well to the roots of the band’s signature sound.

The album, in a sense, is a family reunion with Dave Watts on the drums, Joey Porter on keyboards, Scott Messersmith on percussion, Mike Tiernan on guitar, Garrett Sayers on bass, and the powerhouse horn section of Dominic Lalli (tenor), John Stewart (baritone), and Dan Sears (trumpet). Beth Quist and Jans Ingber put their touch on three tracks with some strong vocals and the recording is rounded out with Paul McDaniel on bass and Zivanni Masango on guitar.

The record will be available at the shows for the ridiculously low price of $1 and will be made available for download on the band’s MySpace page. Once again, all three shows will also include, direct from San Francisco, the fantastic afrobeat big-band Albino!. These two groups together will be a rare treat for Colorado music lovers.
