Umphrey's McGee

The ascension continues for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee, not only in terms of their commercial success but in creative accomplishment and instrumental achievement as well.  Their performance on their most recent release,  Live at the Murat (SCI Fidelity), is as impressive as anything they've recorded to date, with the power and finesse, the yin and the yang, that have come to characterize their by-now classic material.   Live at the Murat is only the latest feather in the cap of the dazzling sextet.   They followed their highly touted spring 2006 studio release Safety In Numbers with the magical odds and sods The Bottom Half in the spring of 2007.   The album, with its outtakes, alternate versions, and other nifty bits, reached #26 on Billboard's coveted "Heatseakers" Chart and received high marks from the music press.   HARP magazine recently noted "...[The Bottom Half delivers] creamy studio work infused by diabolical skill."   Umphrey's McGee has sold out shows in theaters coast to coast, performed coveted slots at such festivals as Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, and appeared on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live."  Booked by the Monterey Peninsula Booking Agency, the band recently sold out three nights at Chicago 's Aragon Ballroom, two nights at the Nokia Theatre, three nights at San Francisco 's Fillmore Auditorium, and the list goes on, as does Umphrey's McGee.

STS9

Dubbed "...one of the country's most intriguing, innovative outfits around" by XLR8R Magazine, STS9 steps out this summer armed with their brand-new, highly anticipated studio album, peaceblaster. To be released in summer 2008 on their own label 1320 Records, the new album will feature never-before heard tracks that artfully mirror the intensity of STS9's live shows, while preserving the musical intricacies of past studio albums that critics and fans have touted.  peaceblaster comes nearly three years after their acclaimed 2005 releases, Artifact & Artifact: Perspectives, both of which were named in iTunes list of top albums of the year.   After a flurry of industry attention, STS9 retreated from the limelight to do what they love most:  play music. On the touring front, STS9 reached number 29 on Pollstar Magazine's "PULSE Charts" of the country's top touring artists. The band has shared the stage with a diverse range of acts including Jurassic 5, Tortoise, Digable Planets, RJD2, De La Soul, The Brazilian Girls, Prefuse 73, John Butler Trio, Blackalicious, G. Love & Special Sauce, Saul Williams, Soulive, Cut Chemist, Xavier Rudd and many others, and has played such festivals as Austin City Limits Festival, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Winter Music Conference, and Vegoose Festival.  Recently, the band sold out a 4 night headlining run at Atlanta's Tabernacle, and a 2 night run at Denver's Fillmore Auditorium.

PHIX this Friday @ Boulder Theater

Phix will play their 500th show at the Boulder Theater- for the Grateful Web

Phix figured since Langerado put them up to show 499, and it felt so good, they might as well do show 500 and what better place than in their home town of Boulder at the historic Boulder Theater.  This will be the first time Phix will be headlining this amazing room and in addition to seeing Phix hit this milestone there will be opening sets by two Phix original projects that you'll definitely want to check out. Guitarist Paul Murin and drummer Chris Sheldon will be playing with their new band The Higher Good and Bassist Brian Adams will be playing with The Ethereal Plane.  This will be a great, long night of music, so please join us.

This is BoomBox - Colorado Tour

photo courtesy of Tsunami Publicity- for the Grateful Web

Alabama's own, BoomBox, has announced an April weekend run of Colorado dates taking them to Boulder, Fort Collins, Denver and Rollinsville in four days.  The musical journey into sound and revelation features stops at The Fox Theater, Hodi's Half Note, Cervantes, and The Stage Stop.

Meshing decades of musical history and popular culture into one complete package, BoomBox offers a truly unique musical statement unlike anything on the music scene today.  Each stop along the tour will benefit local Colorado non-profits, The Basics Fund and Conscious Alliance, as part of the band's mission to help provide for the communities they visit.

The Basics Fund, a local non-profit that raises funds to pay for artists' health insurance, will join forces with BoomBox to organize party transportation with buses that provide a fun, safe way to travel to see the shows.  Buses will have stops in Boulder and Denver with round trip tickets and libations that will be offered for a donation of $25 to The Basics Fund.  BoomBox's contribution to the Colorado-based Conscious Alliance will be powered by the fans. For the donation of 10 can food items or a mere $10, concert goers will receive a Limited Edition commemorative event poster for this BoomBox Colorado run!

Producer/DJ Russ Randolph and singer/songwriter/guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux incorporate the rich history of an area widely recognized for its contributions to the music world in their own work.  Mixing danceable rhythms, hypnotic mixes, and shimmering guitar phrases with an unspoken vibe, BoomBox also leaves their own mark on the Muscle Shoals music community.  Featuring a DJ with a vocalist/guitarist in real time, the BoomBox experience is utterly matchless and cathartic all in the same.

Known for their high-energy live experience, the interplay between Randolph and Godchaux crafts a well-rounded soundscape appealing to an extensive audience.  Drawing crowds of all ages and musical interests through their fusion of rock and roll, psychedelia, and house, the BoomBox sound stimulates the mind, body, and the soul.  Randolph's experience as a producer and Godchaux's work with a pen contribute to the distinctiveness of the duo.

The four-night Colorado tour promises to be a memorable experience and a chance to see and hear a live show unlike any other. Joining BoomBox on their Colorado tour will be San Diego's own Alfred Howard and the K23 Orchestra.  The AHK23's characteristic blend of classic soul, aggressive rock, and vintage psychedelia with master wordsmith Alfred Howard at the helm, has been nationally recognized by funk heads, indie-rock diehards, hip-hoppers, reggae, and poetry lovers alike.  For more information, visit www.thisisboombox.com or www.myspace.com/thisisboombox.

Underground Heavyweight Bassnectar On Tour This Spring

photo by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Bassnectar, voted San Francisco's "number one DJ" three years in a row, is on tour this spring bringing his original and memorizing mixes, big bass drops and contagious energy to venues and clubs across the country.  The tour includes first time stops in Asheville, Birmingham and others as well as returning performances at the Miami Winter Music Conference.  Bassnectar has been featured in ALARM, BMP, DJ MAGAZINE, DJ TIMES, HARP, REMIX, URB, XLR8R and many others, and is touring in support of his acclaimed album, Underground Communication, released on OM Records in Spring 2007.

Here's what critics are saying:

"a vibrant concoction of hip-hop, glitch and jungle. One precaution about this LP: Make sure you have the speakers to do it justice." - Remix

"Zigzagging bass flutters, acid techno, hip-hop, and ambient breakbeats tantamount to pulsating club bangers." - URB

Voted "Best DJ" by Nitevibe.com and SF Bay Guardian, Bassnectar's music is forging new paths in the electronic music world, the Burning Man scene, underground hip hop circles, and beyond. The brainchild of Lorin Ashton, Bassnectar is an experimentally collaborative music project, but it's also a platform for social change and political awareness. It's stylistically specific, yet it's an eclectic, full spectrum adventure.

For Bassnectar's most recent release, Underground Communication (Om Records/May 8, 2007), Bassnectar takes another step forward in his genre-bending blend of musical styles and emotions, combining the visceral melodic presence of modern listening music, with the force and volume of sound system dance floor devastation. The new record is an exploration of hip-hop culture, featuring scores of MCs and rhythmic poetics mashed atop a heavy, driving  range of tempo and, of course, those signature throbbing bass lines. Rooted firmly in political conviction and philosophical intention, and backed by a rabid fan base and dedicated following, Underground Communication sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media and social activism.

HOT BUTTERED RUM ON TOUR THIS WINTER

photos by Michael Podrid- for the Grateful Web

In the Fall of 2006, itching to release their first live album, Hot Buttered Rum announced that it would be recording a handful of shows for official release. Live in the Northeast (released May 2007) beautifully reveals the true core of live Butter: music that is forceful without being flashy, serious without being stuffy, intricate without  being inaccessible, and diverse without being distracting.  The performances were professionally multi-tracked and later carefully mixed by Butter's long-time sound engineer, Josh Osmond.  The result is striking, presenting the unique energy and improvisational spirit of a Hot Buttered Rum live performance in studio-quality sound.

Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, no prior Butter recording has so perfectly displayed the band's bolder and heavier side.  Their full sound permeates Live in the Northeast — from the reggae-tinged "Return Someday" and psychedelica of "Desert Rat" through definitive covers of the Grateful Dead's "Cumberland Blues" and Leo Sayer's "Feel Like Dancin'" — winding the listener through a robust and intense set of acoustic rock.

Hailing from the High Sierra of California, the guys of Hot Buttered Rum grew up on the trails, in the mountains, and on the slopes.  Their ties with nature have only grown and as a group, the band has dedicated much time and energy to reducing their carbon footprint and promoting alternative fuel sources.  As a heavily touring band, Hot Buttered Rum had to face the tough reality of how a national tour can affect the environment and counter it with a positive change.  In response, the band helped to promote the biofuel renaissance, touring the country on recycled vegetable oil and biodiesel as early as 2003.  Band members have participated in numerous Renewable Energy and Biofuel conferences, as well as sitting on discussion panels at such renowned music festivals as Bonnaroo and High Sierra.  Highlighted in the November/December 2005 issue of E: Environmental Magazine, Hot Buttered Rum is commended for trying to "leave an impact on its fans, and not solely on the road that passes beneath its bus tires as it travels from coast to coast".  For more information on Hot Buttered Rum and their greening efforts, visit the band's website, www.hotbutteredrum.net.

The widespread appeal of Hot Buttered Rum's music stems not only from the band's musical versatility and prolific songwriting, but also from the magnetic chemistry the group creates onstage together.  It is this chemistry that is propelling the band to ever greater success. The band has performed at festivals as diverse as the Newport Folk Festival, Bonnaroo, Grey Fox, High Sierra and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and has shared the stage with such artists as Phil Lesh, Bela Fleck, Ben Harper, Chris Thile, Mike Marshall and Peter Rowan, the last two of whom worked with the band on its critically-acclaimed studio release, Well-Oiled Machine

Tea Leaf Green On Tour This Winter

photos courtesy of Madison House- for the Grateful Web

It's been a busy summer for San Francisco's rising stars Tea Leaf Green, who made several festival appearances, including their second consecutive year at Bonnaroo.  Two years ago, the band played an epic debut performance to a Bonnaroo crowd of nearly 10,000; the audience spilled from under the massive tented area to be part of Tea Leaf Green history.  Since then, with non-stop touring and two critically acclaimed releases, Tea Leaf Green has garnered themselves a position among today's brightest young rockers.

Tea Leaf Green's latest release, Rock 'n' Roll Band (October 2006), captures lightning in a bottle. Available separately in both CD & DVD formats, the project joins the band for an evening performance at The Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado, and offers an intimate look at a day in the life of a young rock band on the rise. The DVD was directed by filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann, son of The Grateful Dead's Billy Kreutzmann.

In November 2007, after 10 years touring with Tea Leaf Green, bassist Ben Chambers left the band to pursue life off the road.  Now, Tea Leaf Green welcomes friend and colleague Reed Mathis (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) to the TLG organization.  Audiences can experience Tea Leaf Green's electrifying live show this fall at theaters coast to coast. The current list of confirmed dates is as follows:

December 07 Rio Theatre Santa Cruz CA
December 08 Troubadour West Hollywood CA
December 20-21 19 Broadway Fairfax CA
December 29 Beacon Theater New York NY supporting Gov't Mule
January 11 Bluebird Theater Denver CO
January 12 Fox Theatre Boulder CO
January 13 Hodi's Half Note Fort Collins CO

January 18-19 Crystal Bay Club Crystal Bay Nevada co-bill with Hot Buttered Rum
February 29 - March 01 Fillmore San Francisco CA
March 14-16 Jam in the 'Dam Amsterdam Netherlands

More dates to be announced.

Since the release of the band's first album, Taught to be Proud (2005), Tea Leaf Green has relentlessly toured North America, honing their strength as both songwriters and improvisers. Thanks to their dedicated and connected fan base, the band has gone from playing small bars to large theatres in just a few short years by consistently delivering fresh, mind-blowing live performances. After winning the "Song of the Year" Jammy award for Taught to be Proud 's title track, the road warriors plowed ahead and now sell out shows in major markets including Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, New York and, most notably, the historic Fillmore Auditorium in their hometown of San Francisco, CA. The band's chops have earned them the respect of their musical contemporaries, sharing the stage with such acts as Dave Matthews Band, Trey Anastasio, Gov't Mule, and Bruce Hornsby.
