Born and raised in New Orleans, Stanton Moore is a dedicated drummer and performer especially connected to the city, its culture and collaborative spirit. Driven and inspired by the thriving music scene of his hometown which includes such greats as Professor LonghairDoctor John and The Meters, Moore’s name is now mentioned amongst these Big Easy mainstays.

In the early ‘90s, Moore helped found the New Orleans-based essential funk band Galactic. Their first album, 1996’s widely acclaimed Coolin’ Off, led to an intense tour schedule of nearly 200 gigs a year for the next ten years. Building on their fan base by adding an esteemed list of all-star collaborations to the six albums that followed, Galactic continues to amass a worldwide audience via recording and touring globally.

Moore launched his solo career in 1998 aided by eight-string guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter and saxophonist Skerik (Les Claypool, John Scofield, Roger Waters). The group recorded All Kooked Out! featuring a handful of local New Orleans musicians as well.

In the midst of these recording sessions yet another concept was taking shape. Outtakes turned into the first Garage a Trois release, Mysteryfunk (1999). In 2000 the trio, led by Moore behind the drum kit, was joined by percussionist Mike Dillon (Les Claypool, Ani DiFranco) and has since released three more albums – Emphasizer in 2003, Outre Mer in 2005 and Power Patriot in 2009.

Moore extended his solo discography with the release of Flyin’ the Koop (Verve/Blue Thumb) in 2001, and III (Telarc) in 2006. Following the latter Modern Drummer called Moore’s trademark sound “infectious, jazz-meets-Bonham, nouveau second-line.” Recorded at the legendary Preservation Hall in New Orleans, III featured organist Robert Walter (Greyboy Allstars, The Head Hunters) and guitarist Will Bernard (T.J. Kirk, Doctor Lonnie Smith) as the Stanton Moore Trio, with special guests Skerik and trombonist Mark Mullins (Galactic, Bonerama, Harry Connick, Jr., Better Than Ezra).

In 2008, Moore looked to continue his scaled back session crew with Walter and Bernard to record Emphasis! (on parenthis). Says Moore, “When it came time to do another record, I had already known for a while that I wanted to build on the momentum of this band – three musicians who were becoming a unit unto themselves – and I wanted to get a little more adventurous with the music itself.”

In April 2010, Moore releases Groove Alchemy. The 12-track set is the culmination of Moore’s multimedia project that also includes an instructional book and DVD of the same name. All three facets of the project are designed to explore the roots of funk drumming by examining the work of pioneers like Jabo Starks, Clyde Stubblefield, and Zigaboo Modeliste – each of whom made their mark at different times throughout the 1960s as the engines driving James Brown’s and the Meters’ legendary rhythm sections – and in turn tracing their influences back to the rhythms coming out of New Orleans in the earlier part of the 20th century. Recorded at Levon Helm’s studio in Woodstock, NY, this project is the follow up to the widely acclaimed Take it to the Street DVD and book that focused specifically on New Orleans drumming styles.

With a bachelor’s degree in music and business from Loyola University, Moore stays involved in education by constantly giving clinics and teaching master classes and  private lessons all over the world. He has been a contributing writer for Drum!, Modern Drummer, and DownBeat magazines here he was featured on the covers of more than six drum publications. In 2005, he launched a signature line of cymbals with Bosphorus Cymbals and a signature drumstick with the Vic Firth stick company.  In 2009, Moore developed his own drum company to introduce his signature titanium snare drum that he designed in conjunction with Ronn Dunnett.

Deeply affected by Katrina and its aftermath, New Orleans’ native son was quick to lend a hand by spearheaded the Tipitina’s Music Workshop, free Sunday seminars that cater to children and a rotating cast of well-known professionals to promote the preservation of New Orleans music.  He also set up the Staletta Fund, a scholarship started by he and his wife Aletta to help cover costs for aspiring students to attend jazz camps, auditions and further their education.

Moore stays active as a spokesperson for the Gulf Restoration Network and is a regular proponent of and player with the Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars. Additionally he serves on the board of directors for the Roots of Music, a free music education and academic mentoring program founded by Derrick Tabb, drummer for Rebirth Brass Band and recent nominee for CNN’s Heroes awards.



Galactic’s next record Ya-ka-may will be released February, 2010, and Moore steps into the role of producer on Anders Osborne’s next record due out next Spring.

Kyle Hollingsworth Unveils 2010 Fall Plans

Following The String Cheese Incident’s Hulaween shows at the famed Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, VA, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth is right back at it one week later. Sunday, November 7th, Kyle joins television’s hit children’s show Yo Gabba Gabba, live at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, CO, bringing his own brand new children’s tunes with him. The following week, Kyle Hollingsworth Band travels to the Midwest with St. Louis’ Messy Jiverson supporting all dates before heading to the East Coast to perform with Bonerama, Steve Kimock and Terrence Higgins (Dirty Dozen Brass Band) for three nights as a special guest.

To wrap up 2010, Kyle will host Hoppy Holidays, a unique brew tour experience and blowout run with Kyle Hollingsworth Band. DJ Logic and Liza Oxnard lend a hand to the party, jumping on board with KHB at both Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver, CO, and Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins, CO. 30 years ago, Kyle Hollingsworth set out on a career in music. Since then, with a wealth of desire and incredible ability, Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those who’ve seen SCI know the band can move from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. “In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, we’re not afraid to move in and out of genres,” he says, “and because of that I’ve learned to be creative, not only on stage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to.”

His recent release, titled Then There’s Now, finds the musician coming in to his own. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his mark in the new, always-evolving music scene. Then There’s Now delivers a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes and seamlessly displays his growth as a musician and as a songwriter.

Amos Lee at the Boulder Theater - 02.05.11

Amos Lee has announced Winter 2011 tour dates in support of his new album Mission Bell, which will be released January 25 on Blue Note Records. The tour will kick off at the Moore Theater in Seattle on January 20 and will include stops along the west coast, in the mountain states, and in the southwest, including a concert in Tucson, Arizona where Lee recorded Mission Bell at Wavelab Studio with producer Joey Burns of Calexico. Opening for Lee on the tour will be South African singer-songwriter Vusi Mahlasela.

A limited number of pre-sale tickets will be available to fans starting today. General ticket on-sales begin on Friday, November 5. Full venue and ticketing information is available at Lee’s newly redesigned website. More upcoming tour dates will be announced shortly.

Tapes N' Tapes at the Fox Theater

Tapes ‘n Tapes is a rock band from Minneapolis, MN, made up of Josh Grier on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Kretzmann on keys and horns, Erik Appelwick on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jeremy Hanson on percussion.

Grier said he formed the band in 2003, to “have fun with my friends.  I always wanted to see if I could play music with others and for others.”   Grier and his buddies amassed “tapes ‘n tapes” of noodling, experimental jams and declared themselves officially a band.

In the winter of 2004, the band now known as Tapes ‘n Tapes bought some recording equipment and headed out to a rustic cabin in the woods of Wisconsin.  They recorded their self-titled, now long out of print, seven song EP in three days.  Songs like “Beach Girls” and “50’s Parking” from the EP are still in their live set today.

Next up for the band was recording their critically acclaimed follow up, The Loon.  Appelwick recorded, mixed and produced the eleven song record with the band in one week at a friend’s home studio.  The Loon came out in November of 2005 on ibid records, and no one was ready for what came next.   People started to notice the foursome’s jangly, melodic brand of rock and the band started touring – gaining more and more attention from music critics and fans all over the world.  Even the Thin White Duke took notice.  “’Insistor’ is the first single, and it's cracking. It was a slow grower, but once that chorus digs in there's really no escape,” said Mr. David Bowie.  The prestigious XL Recordings re-released The Loon in July of 2006, the same month Tapes ‘n Tapes made their national television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman.

The band then toured around the world for the next few years- playing shows with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, Cold War Kids, The Black Keys, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Wrens.  In 2006 they were honored to play Reading/Leeds, and 2007 saw them rock out at Lollapalooza and Coachella.

When starting to work out songs for their follow up, Walk It Off, the band was asked who their dream producer was.  The obvious answer to them was Mr. Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT).  With twelve songs in hand, the band made the jaunt to upstate New York to live and work with Fridmann for two amazing weeks- one week in September 2007 to record and one week in October 2007 to mix.  However, years of touring, the political climate, and distance from friends and family had changed the band, and given them a different point of view- one that seemed to pervade their sound.  Spin praised the record saying, “the tunes are tighter and performances far more dynamic and aggressive…..they can now pull off jittery punk and understated, graceful melancholy.”  XL released Walk It Off in April of 2008, on the same day the band made their debut on Conan O’Brien.

After touring and supporting Walk It Off for the following year, it was time for a little R & R- rest and relaxation.  They purposefully took their time and tried to get back to a place where the band was fun, and not work.  They also decided to go back to their roots and do everything on their own, with no label involvement.  They cut ties with XL, and re-launched ibid records, their own label which initially released The Loon.  The brothers tapes had saved their pennies over the years and set out to make the record they’ve always wanted to make – Outside.  They wanted to record at home and self-produce, which they did over two weeks at The Terrarium in Minneapolis, MN in March of 2010.   The next step was getting the talented Mr. Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) to lend his ears to the mix.  Grier spent two more weeks in Bridgeport, CT, while Katis mixed the record to perfection.  The result is twelve songs that are playful and melodic, while also capturing the essence and energy of their live show.   Grier said, “We had a great time making Outside and we wanted our enjoyment of the process to be audible in the recording, and I think we succeeded.”  One thing is for sure, Tapes ‘n Tapes feel like they are making music for the right reasons – fun and pure love for music.  And as Grier always says, “Everything else is gravy.”  Outside will be released on January 11, 2011.

Blues at the Crossroads: The Robert Johnson Centennial Concerts

There’s no denying anyone who digs the Blues will really dig the once-in-a-lifetime experience that is BLUES AT THE CROSSROADS: THE ROBERT JOHNSON CENTENNIAL CONCERTS. The very special tour (set to launch in San Francisco on Jan. 28, 2011) and accompanying studio recording (to be released early 2011) commemorates the 100th Anniversary of legendary bluesman Robert Johnson’s birth with exhilarating collaborations between Big Head Todd & The Monsters, living Bluesman legend David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Hubert Sumlin, and Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm. With Edwards on board, BLUES AT THE CROSSROADS has a direct connection back to the legend, as Edwards was in attendance for Johnson’s last live performance the night Johnson passed away.

“We both wanted to create a blues show that was not just another blues show, but a show that was truly unique,” said Blues at the Crossroads co-producer Ron Hausfeld, who is producing the tour with Ted Kurland Associates’ Jack Randall. “We want people to walk away saying, ‘Wow…that was cool…I’ve never seen anything like it.’”

Before the tour hits the road, BLUES AT THE CROSSROADS musicians meet this fall at Ardent Recording Studios in Memphis to put this epic collaboration to tape. The studio recordings will be released in early 2011 in conjunction with the tour.

BLUES AT THE CROSSROADS picks up the thread of Johnson’s legacy in Mississippi, at the junction of US Highways 61 & 49; the very crossroads where, as legend has it, Robert Johnson’s burning desire pushed him to make his deal with the devil – giving up his soul to write the baddest-ass blues the world had ever heard. One of the most famous Delta blues musicians, Johnson has influenced a broad range of musicians for generations with his songs, vocal phrasing and guitar style – in particular his landmark recordings from 1936-1937 that display a remarkable combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent. Eric Clapton has called Johnson “the most important blues singer that ever lived” and described Johnson's emotive vocal delivery as "the most powerful cry that I think you can find in the human voice." Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an "Early Influence" in their first induction ceremony in 1986. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 in 1938 have given rise to much legend.

Big Head Todd & The Monsters

Colorado rock band Big Head Todd & the Monsters (“Bittersweet,” “Broken Hearted Savior,” “Resignation Superman”) are known for their timeless songwriting, powerful live performances, and unique sound – all reasons the band has garnered a sizable loyal following during their two decades making music. Their landmark album, Sister Sweetly, produced numerous hit songs and went platinum in the United States following its release in 1993. Big Head Todd’s latest release is Rocksteady. The band name is a tribute to legendary blues/jazz "heads" (eg. Eddy Clean-head Vincent, etc). It was actually just a fluke, as they were scheduled to perform their first gig, but had no name. David “Honeyboy” Edwards

At age 95, David “Honeyboy” Edwards, the one-and-only Delta blues guitarist and singer (“Wind Howlin’ Blues,” “The Army Blues”) and his close friend, Pinetop Perkins (age 96), are the oldest Delta blues players still touring the United States. Edwards was born in Shaw, Mississippi, and was a friend to Robert Johnson. He was present on the fateful night when Johnson died. Edwards was named the Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year at the 26th W.C. Handy Blues Awards in 2005 and earned Acoustic Artist of the Year honors in 2007 at The Blues Music Awards. Hubert Sumlin

Popular American blues guitarist and singer Hubert Sumlin is widely known for his celebrated work from 1955 as guitarist in Howlin' Wolf's band. His singular playing is characterized by "wrenched, shattering bursts of notes, sudden cliff-hanger silences and daring rhythmic suspensions.” Listed as number sixty-five in the Rolling Stone100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, Sumlin, who continues to tour, is cited as a major influence by many artists, including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Robbie Robertson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. Hubert has cited Robert Johnson as one of his early influences, along with Muddy Waters, Charley Patton and Robert Lockwood. It has been stated that Sumlin's playing was a vital catalyst for the British blues boom by providing a link from the acoustic blues of the Mississippi delta that was more accessible to electric guitarists such as Clapton, Page, Richards and Beck. Drumming great Cedric Burnside, grandson of the legendary R.L. Pretty Lights Delivers Third EP of 2010

Pretty Lights has never been one to disappoint- and he’s not about to start now. The enigmatic super-producer has stayed true to his promise of releasing three EP’s in 2010…and deliver, he has! Glowing In The Darkest Night, the third installment of his trilogy of 2010’s EPs, was made available this past Friday, October 22nd via his website.

2010 has been quite an exciting year for Pretty Lights. Besides releasing his trilogy of EP’s, Derek Vincent Smith (accompanied by live drummer Adam Deitch) has been busy touring the U.S. and Europe, including many festival appearances on both sides of the Atlantic. He recently surpassed one million album downloads through his website- not bad for an artist who has only been releasing music since 2008. He even surprised his one millionth downloader with a VIP trip to catch him later this month in Las Vegas!

Pretty Lights is touring extensively to support Glowing In The Darkest Night, with the North American tour kicking off Wednesday in Tulsa, and continuing through early December. Phish | Broomfield, Colorado | 10/10/2010

Phish is back in Colorado... just a mere two months earlier we were all out in Telluride to catch Phish at one of the most stellar locales in America.  1st Bank Arena, in Broomfield, Colorado might be in the middle of cookie-cutter American looking architecture -- but the promoters did get it right after renovating 1st Bank back in 2008>2009.  The place was a complete disaster when it first opened in 2006.  The place was riddled with parking problems, crummy acoustics and a real lack of interest from bands, special events, etc.   I guess the Colorado GOP had their little shindig there, which should give you an indication right away how lame this place was…

Now it’s still the same building in the same cookie-cutter location, but what has changed has made all the difference! This place sounds good! Really good…it’s small too, nearing about 6500 at full capacity.  You're not going to catch Phish in a smaller venue in 2010.  Sure us lucky folk who started seeing Phish in the early 90's will still boast seeing the band in a venue holding less than 500 (for me that was Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS on 4/1/92 -- still my favorite Phish show.. get it!).  However, catching Phish in this relatively intimate venue is pretty cool considering the alternative…Pepsi Center or gag…Fiddler's Green (or whatever they're calling the schwaggy place nowadays).

Trey sounds great.  They really tore the roof off the place last night.  Highlights for me:  Julius was a rager – Golgi is always a lot of fun to hear.  Mike’s Song > Simple > Ghost > Weekapaug Groove had a little bit of everything.   Trey introduced a new song last night titled: “My problem Right There” – Sure Senior Ernesto is one of the most prolific song writers out there… I will confess on average, however, I am probably fond of only 1/3 new songs Trey has brought forth over the past decade or so – But this song I liked right away. Most songs take a least a few listens before I know the song well-enough to gauge if I truly dig it – but this song is catchy, bluesy and I enjoyed it from the get-go.

John McLaughlin at the Boulder Theater - 12.04

Fiery yet disarmingly open-hearted, the new album from John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, To The One, bravely takes on the artistic and spiritual challenges first offered by Coltrane’s jazz masterpiece A Love Supreme, while making extensive use of the pioneering musical and technical vocabulary that McLaughlin has honed since the beginning of his storied career.

Available via Abstract Logix on April 20, 2010, To The One is the result of a burst of inspiration that struck the legendary English guitarist and composer in summer of 2009. “This music started to come to me,” McLaughlin explains, “without any call from my part. The sound and feel of this new music took me back to 1965, to when I first heard A Love Supreme. I was 23 years old at that time, and struggling with questions of existence that we all confront sooner or later. Some of us discard them or don’t bother to delve deeper, but that’s not my nature. I was asking big questions: What is the meaning of life? What is this word ‘god’? What is this spirit? It was then that Coltrane came along and single-handedly brought this dimension of spirituality into jazz…it was a pivotal experience to me. It was so encouraging to me in both my musical and spiritual quests. To The One, as an album, is about those two aspects of my life – music and spirituality – crystallized by this recording of Coltrane’s, and how A Love Supreme coincided with my search for meaning in life.”

It is a search that he never surrendered, as McLaughlin’s musical journey took him from session work and jazz sessions in the UK to recording and performing in America with the likes of Tony Williams and Miles Davis, through to the founding of the incredibly influential exploratory fusion outfit the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti, his ensemble dedicated to exploring Indian music and spirituality. Over the past three decades, McLaughlin has continually sought out bold new contexts for his expressive and inventive playing.

The six original compositions on To The One were mostly written in July and August of 2009, and set down in the studio in November and December, with very few overdubs, by McLaughlin’s current performing outfit, the Fourth Dimension: Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), Etienne M’Bappe (electric bass), and Mark Mondesir (drums). Compositional devices clearly inspired by Coltrane are fused with elements of McLaughlin’s own multi-faceted approach, all delivered with a group empathy and shared vision that harkens back to Coltrane’s fearless mid-‘60s quartet of Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison. The effect of Jones’ kaleidoscopic approach to rhythm and drumming is especially felt, brilliantly recast and explored via McLaughlin’s gift for complex metrical structures.

From the surging opener “Discovery” to the gently propulsive title track which closes the compact, forty-minute program, McLaughlin’s own playing is at its very peak: emotional and probing, exploding into flourishes of rapid-fire sixteenth notes one moment, candid and unguardedly vulnerable the next. “For the band to play my tunes is a challenge,” McLaughlin explains, “and in return, I want them to challenge me. This is part of what jazz is – it’s very interactive. You play with the musicians. You’re not just playing the notes.

f that’s not news enough, get this- Pretty Lights also recently surpassed ONE MILLION ALBUM DOWNLOADS from his website.   As a thank you to his dedicated fans, Derek surprised the one millionth downloader with a VIP trip experience to see Pretty Lights in Las Vegas on November 27th!

We’re not through yet- to celebrate a successful year, Pretty Lights will be ringing in 2011 in style, performing with special guests for two nights at The Congress Theater in Chicago, December 30th & December 31st. Major Lazer will be opening on the 30th, and Holy Fuck is opening on the 31st! Pretty Lights, with new touring drummer Adam Deitch, are on the road from the end of October through December.

Ethiopian Superstar Gigi Releases New Album on MOD Technologies

Ejigayehu “Gigi” Shibawbaw, one of Ethiopia's best-known singers, is releasing her latest album Mesgana Ethiopia on October 19th through MOD Technologies, the label founded by Grammy-winner Bill Laswell (who has collaborated with countless legends from Mick Jagger to Laurie Anderson to Tony Williams). This release features Gigi singing her original songs mixed with some Ethiopian traditional tunes – all sung in Amaharic – bridging African styles, Reggae, Dub, Avant-Funk,/Jazz, World Beat, Trance, and Ambient music.

Already an international star, Gigi has recorded and toured across the globe with iconic, master musicians including Tabla Beat Science featuring Zakir Hussain and Sultan Khan, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Hamid Drake, Sly & Robbie, Abegasu Shiota, Buckethead, Karsh Kale, DJ Disk and Laswell himself.  Her music has also been featured in films, including 2003’s Beyond Borders, which starred Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen.
