Bob Log III Announces US Summer Tour

Bob Log III is a One Man Band Slide Guitar Party.

A perverse product of the Arizona desert, Bob Log III has been diligently travelling the globe since 1996, showcasing his incomparable talents and developing a devoted following along the way. A whirlwind of dexterous limbs and digits, this super star sonic showman has to be seen to be believed.

Clad in his cannonball man, extra tight jumpsuit and signature motorcycle helmet with telephone/microphone attached, Bob Log III unfailingly sweats up a river while kicking on a kick drum, stomping his homemade foot cymbal and playing slide on an old archtop guitar.

His endless pursuit for musical mayhem and a downright party has seen his unique talents utilised for children’s birthday parties, obscure beer barns, mammoth music festivals and everything in between.

Yet beyond these mesmerizing visuals, lies the true reason for Bob Log’s international, cult status and superhero adoration. It is quite simply the guitar playing - finger picked lightning, sliding up and down, stopping when it wants to, then starting again when it feels like it, all in a way that makes people move uncontrollably, smile and reel.

The upcoming release of his long awaited new album, MY SH*T IS PERFECT, begins the onset of another slew of adventures. Geography be damned, Bob Log III intends to take these songs and his unique slide guitar party to the good people of the world. There is no town too remote, there never has been.

But don’t take his word for it, let the guitar speak for itself.

Bob Log III RUMORS

Yes, we have all heard the rumors...

He has a monkey paw instead of a hand, girls like to sit on his knees and bounce while he plays, occasionally various people from the crowd jump onstage and put their boob in his drink, he rides in an inflatable dinghy over an ocean of fans…

These whispers are all best explained in the following article, which has been translated from its original publication in French, using the Transitron Whizgig 4000-

“Msr. Bob Log appears, and so joy! It is of many nights and one thousand ladies, the guitar defeats us to dance. On the top, a crown. Never has this in time! Maybe not future. Only the now, her glowing hand, can be seen.  Thunder of foot escapes the stage, chasing wild tempo with sound animal.  We, the entourage, are not free.  Arrested! But not of shame.  Many times more we ask it. Encore, Captain , Encore!”

And so you see, it is all true.

All Bob Log asks is that you do the math. And if you do it (correctly) you will find that with the single exception of Hasil Adkins, Bob Log has out guitared, out drummed, out sweated, out driven, out boated, out bounced, out custom agented, out inspired all other one man bands. Numbers never lie. Bob Log III. MY SH*T IS PERFECT.

Javelin Announce US Tour

“George was pretty damn eclectic as a kid,” says Tom Van Buskirk, referring to his cousin/Javelin collaborator, George Langford. “I was more of a snob, growing up on the Beatles and classical music. Like I didn’t get into Nirvana until after MTV Unplugged came out. I’m always late to the party.”

Maybe that’s why Javelin formed in 2005—to throw a party of their own, one that sees nothing wrong with dropping crooked disco (“On It On It”), schoolyard funk (“Intervales Theme”), abstract R&B (“Dep”) and pitch-perfect pop (“Mossy Woodland”) in the same set. At least that’s the way things unfold on Javelin’s debut album, No Más, the eagerly-awaited follow-up to a self-released collection of demos (Jamz n Jemz) and a pair of limited Thrill Jockey 12-inches (Javelin, Number Two).

It’s as if Javelin were programmed to reproduce the golden age of every genre known to man, bouncing between samplers and strings, drum machines and drum sets, and a growing collection of guitars, horns and homemade thumb pianos. You read that right: Most of No Más’ dusty 45 moments aren’t lifted from actual recordcrates. They’re painstakingly recreated, note by note, from the jukebox in Javelin’s collective mind.

“I love making music that has flaws and human fingerprints all over it,” adds Langford. “There’s also that grey area where you can’t tell what’s a sample, although it leaves you wanting to say, ‘Hey, I did that!’”

There’s no denying who’s doing what at Javelin shows, ever-evolving pieces of performance art that leave the laptops at home and have more in common with the multi-tracked madness of an old Jamaican sound system than the standard guitar/bass/drums setup of a ‘band’.

“The worst thing in the world would be to have a wall of dudes staring at your gear, watching your every move,” says Langford, “So we try to inject as much life and energy into our performances as possible.”

When they first started playing around Providence, this meant an overwhelming array of “turntables, glockenspiels and percussion.” Now that they’ve settled in Brooklyn and stripped their restless sound down to its bare essentials, Javelin’s become known as the guys with the boom boxes, a Flaming Lips-like technique that’s allowed them to break down the artist/audience wall at such tour stops as New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

“A lot of people think they’re ornaments, but they play sound,” says Van Buskirk. “It’s like, ‘You really thought we dragged all of this here for nothing?”

Never. You see, everything has its place in a Javelin song, from the shimmering keys and brassy strut of “Shadow Heart” to the loony tune loops of “Oh! Centra.” So if you’re trying to ‘figure Javelin out’, don’t bother. These musical omnivores work their music like a rabid radio dial, leaving a tricky trail of sonic breadcrumbs in their wake. Or as Langford puts it, “The minute I start working in one style, I get distracted and want to work on another one. We kinda gave up on finding our ’sound’ years ago.”

Sleepy Sun Announce US Tour | Play South By Southwest

Whether droning madly, spiralling into cascades of infinitely echoing vocals or kicking back with their blissed-out take on classic Americana rock, Sleepy Sun are a band that demand your attention. Formed in Santa Cruz and now based in San Francisco, this intense sextet are set to release their latest single, Sleepy Son (sic), taken from their breathtaking debut album, Embrace, in August.

Comprising Brian Tice (drums), Jack Allen (bass), Rachael Williams (vocals, haberdashery & interpretive dancing) Bret Constantino (vocals & harmonica), Evan Reiss (guitars) and Matt Holliman (guitars) – all 22 and 23, the band met in the counter-cultural hub city of Santa Cruz, California, citing “pizza, horticulture, Neil Percival Young,” as common interests. “With the forest and ocean as our back drop, we were drawn to each other as fellow musicians, friends, and lovers” they say.

Drawing musical inspiration from Black Sabbath, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Can and Creation Records, they forged their sound in intense jams, “free flowing, heady, ‘where am I?’ type jamming.”

Though they’re in the one-time home of psychedelia, it’s not San Francisco per se that influences their sound. “It comes more from Northern California itself more than any scene or city,” they say. “There truly is nowhere on Earth like our little corner of the country where the redwoods smother the ocean.”

What are you waiting for? Let’s Get Weird!

Girl Talk Rings In The New Year With Biggest House Party Of The Decade

To celebrate the end of the decade and New Year’s Eve, Girl Talk threw one of the largest and craziest house parties the world has seen last week in Chicago. As an incredible surprise to the entire 4500-capacity audience at the Congress Theater, Girl Talk literally had a two-story, five-room HOUSE built on stage, including drywall, staircase, fake wooden floor and impeccable detail! What took months and months to plan, 4+ solid days and 21+ crewmembers to build, was a huge undertaking and undeniably, impressive success appreciated by all.

Complete with a kitchen that included a refrigerator with a note and photo stuck on the door, dinner table with fruit bowl, blender and more, hutch filled with china and glassware, fireplace, couch, coffee table, rug, picture frames and more in the living room, a kid's room with a bed, desk, computer and mouse, pencil jar, trophy, Snoop Dogg poster, and a bathroom with a toilet, sink, shower and curtain, plus fake trees in the yard, and the table he uses to perform presented as a large rock, the detail and thought that went into each element was flawless. The lights constructed on the outside and inside of the house, including an LCD curtain surrounding the house to make it look like the night sky, and all over the venue, added to the insanity. When the house was first presented to the audience, all the lights that were on included a few lamps inside each room, however, as the night neared midnight, the house counted down from 9 to 0, and then once midnight hit, the house came alive as lights all over the house, inside and out, shown bright. This was the first of many secrets revealed throughout the show. Others include the kitchen floor which eventually lit up turning into a disco dance floor, the entire bathroom could strobe any color, the computer in the kid’s room had an LED light attached to it, and huge amounts of light came out of the fireplace. And that’s just inside the house! There were special lights strategically hidden all over the venue that were active and radiant throughout the night.

To match the extravagance of the house and excitement of the whole night, Girl Talk played his longest set in history! The energy was outstanding! All of these aspects combined to form a truly over-the-top, electrifying night and an especially invigorating way to kick off 2010!

The entire construction process building up to the show and the actual show itself was documented on multiple HD cameras. A short film about this is being put together by Girl Talk and crew. Announcements regarding the film will be released in the coming weeks.

Watch the house countdown to midnight here:

Matt Flinner Trio Nashville CD Release Party

In August of 2006, with the backdrop of the Rockies to inspire them, the Matt Flinner Trio (Matt Flinner (mandolin), Ross Martin (guitar), and Eric Thorin (bass)) threw down a challenge to one another: write a new tune each day while on tour and perform it that evening. The first gig was at a small art gallery in Salt Lake City and barring a frantic evening of photocopying and rehearsing, the show was a success. The players continued with their daily musical challenge, giving birth to the concept of the "Music du Jour" tours and later the Music du Jour album. Between Flinner, Ross, and Thorin, over sixty new tunes were composed during three western US tours, and in December 2008 the trio committed the twelve best to record at the Compass Sound Studio. With Music du Jour the Matt Flinner Trio sets a new standard for the bluegrass trio sound and creative output.

flinnerMulti-instrumentalist Matt Flinner has made a career out of playing acoustic music in new ways. Starting out as a banjo prodigy who was playing bluegrass festivals before he entered his teens, Flinner later took up the mandolin, won the banjo contest at Winfield Kansas in 1990, and took the mandolin award there the following year. Flinner's decision to focus on eight-stringed instruments, especially the mandolin, was primarily a function of opportunity.  He explains, "I was getting more work on the mandolin." Sugarbeat, an eclectic quartet that also featured banjoist Tony Furtado, lead vocalist and guitarist Ben Demerath, and bassist Sally Truitt allowed him the opportunity to master the mandolin in a contemporary folk and bluegrass context.

Flinner is now widely considered one of the hottest mandolin players on the acoustic scene. He tours actively with the Matt Flinner Trio, as a member of the 'new acoustic' trio Phillips, Grier & Flinner, as a member of Darrell Scott's band, and with guitarist Frank Vignola (David Grisman Quintet). Flinner also special guests on banjo with Leftover Salmon and in the fall of 2008 was a featured soloist with Trey Anastasio and Carlo Aonzo during Orchestra Nashville's performance of "Concertino" (Don Hart). He most recently appeared on comedian Steve Martin's new recording The Crow and the Vignola Collectives' March 09 release, Gypsy Grass.

With his singular combination of taste, tone, and time, Matt Flinner has and continues to create a sound that is unique to his vision and makes an important statement in the evolution of acoustic string band music.
