NPR Takes Ladysmith Black Mambazo Back Home

For their new album, 'Songs From a Zulu Farm' (out this week on Listen 2 Entertainment Group/Razor & Tie Entertainment), South Africa's a cappella treasure Ladysmith Black Mambazo went back home.

Original band member Albert Mazibuko and 20-year band manager Mitch Goldstein joined NPR Weekend Edition Sunday’s host Liane Hansen to discuss how Ladysmith Black Mambazo collected songs traditionally sung by Zulu parents to their children for the new album.

"There's such a rich, wonderful history. A personal history that comes from the group that's not always found in their CDs," Goldstein said. Mazibuko added, "When my grandmother told me about the songs, she said that their parents were singing the same songs to them."

Listen to the NPR interview here.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo was featured earlier this month on AOL’s Spinner blog, where Mazibuko, said, "Most of these songs we sing, even the traditional songs and the songs we wrote as a group, are the songs that always have lessons of encouragement, this kind of instruction."

Phil and the Osophers Debut Three New Vids

Phil and the Osophers unveil three distinctive videos to titillate the senses.  Members of the International Found Footage Society, the band used newsreels from the 1920s-1940s to create the video for Propeller Jet, which narrates the thrill of America's burgeoning love with the golden age of aviation.  Avant-garde Czech films were spliced together to create the breathtaking Well Being video, the last three minutes being a visual and auditory world unto itself.  Phil and the Osophers own travel footage is showcased in the video for Wandering Soul, where cities and climates and time blur together.

Phil and the Osophers have added a new member!  C. Lizbeth Marquez, a Spaniard by birth, has been added to play keyboard, percussion and background vocals.  Come see the expanded lineup at Brooklyn's Bruar Falls on February 15, in a show curated by Pop Jew, also known as Worst Cooks In America winner Rachel Coleman.  The band will also be doing a short tour in March, more dates are TBA.

Phil and the Osophers made their sixth full length album, Parallelo, available on CD and digitally this summer on Factual Fabrications, Phil’s own sustainable label.  The album finds the Brooklyn 3 piece developing into a jingly and jangly artistic indie rock while retaining carefully crafted and philosophical lyrics.  The band has a catalog of over 100 songs, and this new album is their most impressive work to date.
THE SONGS
The 11 song cycle of Parallelo explores parallels and coincidences in our understanding of meaning.  Phil has an interesting explanation for all of these songs- “Uses Of A Man deals with equal rights for all lovers”, Creators “is a thesis on God in the time of slavery”, Propeller Jet is “about suiting up with Amelia Earhart on her last flight” “Cheap Livin is an tribute to the rich folks who lost it all”  …Tie it together with an avant-garde indie pop sound and you have Parallelo.  It is this sort of innovation that makes Phil and the Osophers such a one-of-a-kind act.
The Brooklyn 3-piece have been on a tear recently: playing SXSW and the Northside Festival in Brooklyn, as well as playing shows with Art Brut, Passion Pit, Les Savy Fav, Le Loup, the Ruby Suns, and the Dodos.
In addition, all 3 members have written and published books of poetry and non-fiction through their own publishing house called ILOANBooks. Bass player Gus has published NINE books, Drummer Kevin has published two (including a new edition entitled "Winter Doesn't Care What Your Name Is"), and Phil has written his one book of poetry entitled "SHAKE! and other rattlers".  These books are usually free at shows and otherwise available upon request.

James McMurtry gets iPhone app, embarks on Western tour

James McMurtry fans can now stay up to date with concert information, photos, videos, music and blog posts while they are on the go with the  his new official iPhone application.  The app also allows users to post photos from their iPhone directly to the fan community and engage other fans across Facebook and iLike. The app is available for $.99 at the link here.

McMurtry and his band will be touring the western United States in support of his latest release, Live in Europe (Lightning Rod Records). The album is a document of McMurtry’s first European tour, on which he was joined by keyboardist Ian McLagan and fellow Texas songwriting legend Jon Dee Graham. The set is available as a CD with a bonus DVD, or as a deluxe vinyl LP package with a CD and DVD insert.

Live in Europe, available as a CD/DVD set or as a vinyl LP/DVD set, has earned praise from the critics. Mike Seely, writing in the Seattle Weekly, wrote: “The great Texan James McMurtry released a new album of old material in 2009—in other words, a live album. No matter: Mere mention of its drop date gave me an excuse to delve deeper into McMurtry's supremely underrated oeuvre. . . This re-exposure made me surer than ever that McMurtry is the Springsteen of the South.”

Blurt’s Steve Pick added, “With a new administration in office, he's taken six of the less directly political songs from that record, added two other older cuts, and brought out Live in Europe. It's another chance to notice how in and around the anger about macroscopic events, McMurtry is capable of extraordinary nuance in describing the lives of ordinary people on a microscopic level.”

In addition, McMurtry’s 2005 song “We Can’t Make it Here” was listed as the “Song of the Decade” both by the Lefsetz Letter’s Bob Lefsetz, and by NoDepression.com’s Grant Alden, the latter of whom called it, “Angry and musically adventurous and pissed off, which is different from angry. And a summary of how this decade felt, from my side of the typing.” The Nation declared McMurtry “Most Important Rocker.”

Phil Lesh & Friends Added to the 10KLF

Phil Lesh & Friends joins an already jam-packed lineup of artists for a headlining performance at the 4th Annual 10,000 Lakes Festival (10KLF) July 19-22, 2006 at the Soo Pass Ranch in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Drawing from a pool full of talented national, regional, and emerging acts, the 10,000 Lakes Festival seeks to be the nation's premier music and camping festival destination. The 10KLF Cosmic Break Tour showcases emerging artists through a series of regional events during April and May. One band from each city's event moves on to perform at the 10,000 Lakes Festival. Thirteen bands will receive a paid performance slot at 10KLF and prize packages, including a potential endorsement from D'Addario Strings and Evans Drumheads. Interested artists may apply and get more information at www.CosmicBreakTour.com.

The 10,000 Lakes Festival community comes together once a year to celebrate great music in an enchanting natural setting within a participatory, dynamic festival environment. In 2005, the Minneapolis Star Tribune admired that the 10,000 Lakes Festival was "filled with thousands of good vibes." Jambase.com calls 10KLF "old from the North Country." The Star Tribune continues "Even the musicians are impressed by the fest site." Backstage at 10KLF, Jon Bell, singer/guitarist with Widespread Panic told the Tribune "There's room to move and lots of friendliness and not too crazy. It's a very open vibe. You can't create that."

Dotting the spacious festival and camp grounds are four stages showcasing the 40+ bands performing on the Barn Stage, a shady hill overlooking the concert bowl; the open air Field Stage; the Saloon Stage for intimate concerts and late night jams; and the Main Stage where everyone gathers in the evening for the headliners' concerts featuring Phil Lesh & Friends, Trey Anastasio, The String Cheese Incident and more.
