Pink Moon Festival is a Rock Camp Production and is the final show in the company’s Glo-deo (giant glowing dragon puppet rodeo) tour in which large ensembles of puppeteers present spectacle performances at major music festivals across the country.

Performances this season include All Good Music Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, Elysian Fields, Camp Barefoot, and Pink Moon.  Previous performances include Phish 8 (w/Phish 3d movie spots), Bonnaroo, Langerado, 10,000 Lakes Festival, Disorient Times Square and a slew of themed events in NYC nightclubs with DJ’s including Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, and many more.

The Pink Moon Festival is a tribute to festival organizer Seth Abramson’s mother Pinky, who passed away in an ATV accident in 2006. In between going to college and getting his Master’s degree, Seth spent a lot of time with his mother Pinky in Rock Camp. There they worked in the old general store and regularly hosted music events on the mountain. Pink Moon is an attempt to celebrate the traditions that Pinky pioneered in Rock Camp by honoring her life and sharing the love she left behind with as many people as possible.

Grateful Web Interview with Artist Bob Masse

Canadian Bob Masse, who has recently been designing posters and t-shirts for LebowskiFest, Playboy's recent Bunny series and Phil Lesh & Bob Weir's Furthur, is himself very Lebowski.

Grateful Web Interview w/ Drive-By Truckers artist Wes Freed

Visual artist, writer, musician and actor Wes Freed is a Southern Gothic multi-disciplinary wonder of sorts. His work overlaps to such an extent he almost sings his paintings and paints his songs. Freed himself, his wife and long-time collaborator Jyl, his truck and his home studio all seem to overlap with it as well.

Willie Nelson, Rhett Miller, Robert Earl Keen and More Pay Tribute to Sara Hickman

With an unwavering dedication to increased awareness and funding for arts education and a passion for art and the creative process, Sara Hickman provides a unique and powerful voice for women, her generation and the value and importance of the arts in school. It is no wonder more than 30 Texas music legends including Willie Nelson, Rhett Miller, Shawn Colvin, Robert Earl Keen and dozens more have come together to both pay tribute and add to her philanthropic endeavors with The Best of Times. Sales of this compilation CD, available nationwide August 23, 2011, will benefit Theatre Action Project (TAP), a non-profit that brings art, music and theatre to Central Texas schools.

The 38-track double disc project was inspired by a recent slash in arts funding by Texas State Legislature. “I wanted to utilize my position as the Official State Musician of Texas to promote families being creative together,” says Hickman. “Many times this starts with children bringing home ideas they learn at school.”

The compilation CD was created to raise funds for TAP and help the organization take the arts and theatre back into the schools. Hickman goes on to say, “I knew thousands and thousands of Texas children were missing out on what art, music, theater, dance and writing can bring to their lives.” Hickman’s goal is to raise $250,000 for TAP and share her story with Texas state legislature on Arts Day in an effort to have arts funding fully reinstate in Texas schools.

TUPAC AMARU SHAKUR FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES “2PAC 40TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION”

Afeni Shakur and the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation announce details for the 2PAC 40th Birthday Celebration Concert, at the Atlanta Symphony Hall in Atlanta, GA, June 16, 2011. Hosted by comedian/actor Mike Epps, this star-studded event will feature a headlining appearance by GRAMMY® award-winning artist Erykah Badu, as well as performances by legendary soul artists Roy Ayers and Eric Roberson, and hip-hop heavyweights Too $hort, Bun B, and 8 Ball and MJG. Proceeds from the event benefit the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

“I am deeply honored to have been invited by Afeni Shakur to celebrate her son’s remarkable life,” says Badu. “I don’t take this distinction for granted.”

Since 2009, presenters, Mike Epps and Afeni Shakur have drawn thousands of 2Pac fans from around the globe to Atlanta for an annual day of music, art and culture in recognition of the icon’s lasting impact and influence. The event aims to not only revive Tupac’s spirit through art, but offer a prophetic representation of the late artist at age 40 – complete  with a musical soundtrack that spans the soulful jazz sounds of Roy Ayers and to West Coast rap contemporaries such as Too $hort.

“With this event, we help keep Tupac’s legacy alive,” says Epps, “not only by bringing together the fans that know and love his music, but also by supporting his organization, and the causes he worked so hard for during his lifetime.”

Past celebrations have included performances by Rick Ross, Wacka Flocka, Lil’ Scrappy, M1 of Dead Prez and more. At last year’s concert, Dekalb County officials presented Afeni Shakur and Mike Epps with a proclamation officially naming June 16th as “Tupac Day.”

This June 16 will mark the 40th birthday of Tupac Shakur, a man whose impact on culture worldwide through his art, activism and passion is felt to this day. This year, fans, family, artists and performers alike will gather at the Atlanta Symphony Hall to both celebrate the life and further the cause of this remarkable individual.

Tickets are priced at $45-150.00, and are available exclusively at www.16thofjune.com.

Dead.net proudly presents The Family Dog

They may have thrown some epic parties, but it's The Family Dog's innovative art that remains their true legacy. In 1966, free-spirited rock promoter Chet Helms teamed up with a commune of hippies to create The Family Dog. The collective put on some of the greatest rock concerts of all time. To spread the word about its live events, they hand-picked a small army of graphic artists to design promotional posters and handbills. The most influential of the group - Rick Griffin, Alton Kelly, Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse, and Wes Wilson - became known as the “San Francisco Five.” The San Francisco Five would go on to produce some of the most iconic and memorable imagery in the history of rock and roll. Their art reflects the bold experimental freedom of the era, serving as a guidepost for future generations who long for peace, love, and understanding.

Here We Go Magic Premiere New Single "Song In Three"

Here We Go Magic have released The January EP on Secretly Canadian this week with some reviews hailing it their best effort to date.

The second single "Song In Three" is available for download via Pitchfork and you can hear the entire EP streaming on Spinner right now.

The EP's six tracks complete the songwriting cycle that Here We Go Magic began in an upstate New York farm house upon the commencement of their critically-acclaimed sophomore LP Pigeons (2010, Secretly Canadian). The band's signature mix of swirling guitars, krautrock grooves, pulsing synths, and hushed chants provide a foundation for these otherworldly songs.

"Hands in the Sky" (download link below) is a ghostly number that showcases vocalist Luke Temple's lyrical pedigree, his words pushed forward in lockstep with a band heaven-bent on window dressing your headspace like a cosmos for the 20 minutes they've got your attention. At the center of the EP lies what Here We Go Magic does best, a dichotomy between eerie folk sounds and driving art rock. The jangly back-and-forth between the guitars of Michael Bloch and Temple form the backbone to "Song In Three" (download link below), the yin to Pigeons standout "Collector"'s yang. Cyclical in its instrumentation and lyrics, the spooky lullaby "Hollywood" climaxes with a mantra that wouldn't have been out of place on the band's 2009 self-titled release.

The January EP was produced by Jen Turner and recorded live to analog tape in a band-built living room studio.

Here We Go Magic are currently on tour with Aroara and will soon be joined by Cavemen for the remainder of the dates.

2011 Harmony Festival: 'A Tribute to the Life of Owsley “Bear” Stanley and the Musical Spirit of Jerry Garcia'

Some forty or so years ago in the Summer of Love, tens of thousands of Northern Californians – and soon after, many more Americans – changed their minds about certain aspects of American life.  They decided that spending their lives in the pursuit of fun and a higher wisdom would be preferable to an existence devoted exclusively to getting, spending, and serving corporations.  They decided that all of this would be best accompanied by music.

Some of them went to work at a fair that evolved into the Harmony Festival.  Some of them followed a band called the Grateful Dead. Some of them did both. And on Friday, June 10, from 9PM – 3AM they have the chance to do it all again, together, in one location.

The 33rd annual Harmony Festival—which runs June 10, 11 and 12—is pleased to present as part of its 2011 festival Harmony After Dark late night concerts:  “A Tribute to the Life of Owsley “Bear” Stanley and the Musical Spirit of Jerry Garcia”, featuring performers Steve Kimock, the David Nelson Band, Jesse McReynolds, members of Railroad Earth, and Moonalice. The show will be held Friday, June 10 in Harmony Hall on the festival grounds at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, California.

Access to this very special Late Night attraction is included with a Harmony Festival Three Day Plus, Whole Festival or VIP ticket OR a separate Friday Night Ticket ($45 online in advance), which includes all of the other Late Night concerts and after hours attractions.

In the Harmony Festival tradition, the visual arts grab just as much spotlight as the sonic, and Harmony Hall will overflow with Rock Art by TRPS; live art and installations by Tribe 13 featuring original art by Jerry Garcia, Owsley Stanley, Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley, Stanley Mouse, The Merry Pranksters, Alex Gray, Mati Klarwein, Martina Hoffman, and more; a collection of Original Blotter Art curated by Shady Backflash and Rick McCloud; live painting by Stanley Mouse and Mark Henson; visuals by Jonathan Singer; and ambience and interactive experientials by Johnny Dwork and Peak Experience Productions.

In addition to being the legendary chemist behind the psychedelic adventures of mid-60s San Francisco, Owsley Stanley, who recently passed following an auto accident, became the Grateful Dead’s soundman, and in 1973 produced the Dead’s last album with Warner Bros., Bear’s ChoiceKimock, Nelson, McReynolds and their friends will re-create the album, a long-time Dead Head favorite.  This unique resurrection will cap an evening of performances by musicians who were part of Jerry Garcia’s legendary playing career and extended musical family, including:

Steve Kimock, unquestionably one of the pre-eminent guitarists in the jam-band explosion that emerged after the Grateful Dead stopped touring, so it’s appropriate that in the early ‘80s Garcia himself identified Kimock as his “favorite lesser-known guitarist

David Nelson, whose first professional show at the San Francisco State Folk Festival of 1962, was in a band called the Hart Valley Drifters led by Jerry Garcia.  David went on to fame as a founder of the New Riders of the Purple Sage.

Jesse McReynolds, an icon of bluegrass, a peer of Bill Monroe’s and a personal hero of Jerry Garcia’s, recently released a tribute album to Garcia and his lyricist Robert Hunter called Songs of the Grateful Dead.

Railroad Earth, one of the leading jam bands on the current scene, and members from the band will be playing.

Moonalice, which features the considerable talents of Roger McNamee (Flying Other Brothers), Ann McNamee (Ann Atomic), Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna), Barry Sless (Phil Lesh & Friends, Kingfish), and John Molo (Bruce Hornsby & the Range, John Fogerty, the Other Ones).

In short, musicians from all facets of Jerry Garcia’s musical life will converge on the stage at Harmony Hall to make music in the tradition of all traditions. In anticipation of the considerable attention this line-up will garner, music industry heavyweight Guitar Player magazine has joined forces with Harmony Festival to sponsor this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Celebrating 33 years of “Unity in Community”, Harmony Festival is a proud, repeat winner of The Bohemian’s Best Festival and Best Music Festival Sonoma annual reader awards.

HARMONY FESTIVAL Five stages, three days, two nights…one unforgettable experience!
