EOTO: A Vicious Bass Onslaught

Dubstep has arrived. It's in the clubs. It's on TV, insidiously creeping into commercials and terrorizing radio waves around the world; from Berlin to New York City and everywhere in between, Dubstep is a force to be reckoned with. The once-underground phenomenon crossed the pond and went mainstream. Thanks to its growing popularity, amateur producers just flip on their low frequency oscillators and take a nap. Drab and derivative, the genre has been co-opted by DJs simply regurgitating the work of others. There is one act, though, that has been leading the way and setting the standard for live performance Dubstep/Electro/House for over five relentless years. One force that does it live.

The cyber-kinetic bass juggernaut EOTO is Dubstep's savior and innovator. Two twisted demons blasting razor-bass and shrapnel beats from coast to coast and beyond. Snarling and brutal, these psy-dub beat sorcerers create Dubstep from the ground up, night after night, using only real instruments and their sonic wizardry. No pre-programmed loops, no heavy samples snatched from other producers, Jason Hann and Michael Travis bring Dubstep to life in real time, and push the movement into unexplored territories. Their soul-shattering brand of lazerstep is as mesmerizing as it is evil.

Those who haven't been exposed to the two-headed, buzzsaw-juggling behemoth best check their schedules. EOTO is in the process of throwing down an unprecedented 60 performances in 64 nights. There's no break, there's no solace, just a vicious bass onslaught from the South to the Rocky Mountains to the West Coast, and back across the Midwest. And that's before festival season even kicks off. Beginning with Summer Camp, and running through Wakarusa, The Big Up, and Nateva in August, EOTO is already charting its course of summer destruction. You can bet they're planning something perverse and especially warped for the season's most anticipated gathering of subsonic junkies: Sonic Bloom Festival.

There is no stopping EOTO from spreading a near lethal dose of dance music to the masses. The duo just unleashed a FREE 10-track sampler from their 2011 Colorado tour on SoundCloud and is also expected to release the third rendition of their annual live tour compliation called "K-Turns and U-Turns" on May 17th (Album Art). The 39-song-collection was recorded live in 2010 with each disc meticulously mixed to flow like a live show.

To educate and prepare the unwitting masses for their awesome destructive power, EOTO just wrapped up filming for their soon to be released live DVD. Soon, the world will be able to witness these two dark ninjas maneuvering in precise symbiosis through technology, slaying crowds in high definition, and will understand that Travis and Hann have been, and always will be, true pioneers of Dubstep. Their debut concert DVD will capture their entirely original, completely improvised sonic assault. Beware of the release date, to be announced this summer.

For more information about EOTO or their spring/summer tour check out their website at www.eotomusic.com and don't forget to check out their new ticketing service offering only $2 ticketing fees on all advance tickets.

CHRISTY & EMILY: TALK NORMAL

For Christy & Emily, these songs are a preview of their newer sound with bass (Pete Kerlin) and drums (Kristin Mueller). Later in the spring of 2011, Christy & Emily will be heading to the Faust Studio in southern Germany to record a new full-length album with this quartet. They are happy with the way the band allows them to expand sonically. The extra track on the digital download card is a song by Oakley Hall, called “Endtime Evangelist,” off of their first self-titled album on Bulb (four years before they signed to Merge). This song has been strong on Emily's mind for half a decade, only coming out as a cover that the duo has been performing live in the last year.
Talk Normal's "Hurricane" is a soaring narrative piece. Lead by drummer Andrya Ambro's melodic lead vocal and buffeted by guitarist Sarah Register's harmonies, "Hurricane" is a sing-a-long story told with humility, grace & pleasing cacophony. Conceptual references range from U.S. Girls to Meredith Monk to Tears For Fears to The Velvet Underground – yet the sound is all their own, with an ebbing structure that carries the imagination through a manic ocean of soundscapes, wildly complex and still simple enough to be howled at the moon.

Stanley Clarke & Victor Wooten @ the Boulder Theater

STANLEY CLARKE BAND Exploding into the jazz world in 1971, Stanley was a lanky teenager from the Philadelphia Academy of Music. He arrived in New York City and immediately landed jobs with famous bandleaders such as: Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Saunders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz, and a budding young pianist composer named Chick Corea.

All of these musicians recognized immediately the ferocious dexterity and complete musicality the young Clarke possessed on the acoustic bass. Not only was he expert at crafting bass lines and functioning as a timekeeper in the bass- traditional role, Stanley also possessed a sense of lyricism and melody gained from his bass heroes Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro, and others, including non-bass players like John Coltrane. Clarke recognized the opportunity to propel the bass into a viable melodic soloist role and was uniquely qualified to do just that.

Stanley Clarke became the first bassist in history to headline tours, selling out shows worldwide, and have his albums certified gold. The word "legend" was used to describe Stanley by the time he was 25 years old. In 1997 Epic/Sony released: By this tender young age, Stanley was already a celebrated pioneer in fusion jazz music. He was also the first bassist in history to double on acoustic and electric bass with equal virtuosity, power, and fire. His artistry has spanned classical, jazz, R&B and pop idioms. He has already succeeded in a multitude of diverse careers, any one of which would be satisfactory to anyone else. Yet he still pushes on, as invigorated and as passionate about music as that teenage prodigy from Philadelphia with a dream. The Biography of this incredible musician, like Stanley himself, is a continuing work in process.

VICTOR WOOTEN He is an innovator, composer, arranger, lecturer, producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. He is a skilled naturalist and teacher, a published author, a magician, husband and father of four, and a five-time Grammy award winner. But those gifts only begin to tell the tale of this Tennessee titan.

Victor, known for his solo recordings and tours, and as a member of the Grammy-winning super group, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, has won most every major award given to a bass guitarist. He was voted Bassist of the year by Bass Player Magazine three times and is the only person to have won the award more than once.

Continuing to grow as a person, artist, and teacher, Victor Wooten is always willing to share his gifts with all who desire to learn. Offering CDs, DVDs, lectures, workshops, and camps, as well as his groundbreaking novel The Music Lesson (Berklee Publishing - a division of the Penguin Group) Victor Lemonte Wooten is guaranteed to remain a positive force in the music industry.

Jake Hertzog Trio Live At Miles Cafe This Friday!

Jake Hertzog, one of the most original and exciting young guitarists on the of the modern jazz guitar and fusion. Drawing from extensive experience in the jazz world and indie rock scene, Hertzog has developed a truly original sound.  At only 24 years old, Jake has already released two critically acclaimed fusion albums, Chromatosphere (2009, Thats Out) and Patterns (2010, Buckyball).  A distinguished graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Jake performed with jazz greats Joe Lovano, Terri Lyne Carrington, Michael Wolff, Mike Clark, and Greg Osby. In 2006 He was also the youngest ever winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival Jazz Guitar Competition and was invited to open for John Scofield at the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival.

As a result of touring the US as bandleader for Nickelodeon pop-stars Nat and Alex Wolff, performing in arenas, and playing with dozens of indie rock bands in the New York scene most notably "Wakey Wakey",  Jake developed a ferocious performance style, uncommon in the jazz world.  In addition to an aggressive performance schedule, Jake is an active jazz educator and has done workshops all over the world.  He currently writes a jazz column for Guitar Player Magazine (US) entitled “Hey Jazz Guy”, and has been coined "The jazz ambassador to the non-jazz world".  2011 will be an exciting year for Jake Hertzog, as a new album is set to be released late spring, as well as Jake's singer-songwriter project "The Young Presidents" will also be releasing a new album.

The Jake Hertzog Trio, featuring jazz legends Harvie S and Victor Jones is one of the most dramatic and exciting 'force of nature' acts in the instrumental world.  The unforgettable live experience is somewhere between, Jimi Hendrix and John Mayer, Pat Metheny and U2, Keith Richards and John Scofield.  The only way to find out is to experience it yourself.

The band:

-Harvie S-  (bass)

The legendary Harvie S has performed and recorded with masters in music including Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker, Gil Evans, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Art Farmer, Toots Thielemans, Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Chick Corea, Erik Friedlander, Danilo Perez, Paquito D'Rivera, Pat Martino among many others and hailed by Jazz Improv as “one of the preeminent bass voices in jazz today.”

-Victor Jones-  (drums)

Victor Jones got his start in Stan Getz’s band and has since performed and recorded with Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Clarke, Michel Pettruciani, Dizzy Gillespie, Chaka Khan among others. One of the pioneers of “acid jazz”, Jones continues to lead his own group “Culturversey”, the current incarnation of which includes Jake Hertzog on guitar.

EOTO Spring Tour With Custom Projection Show - FREE MP3

EOTO is hitting the road for an extensive spring tour this week with a custom animated video projection show provided by lighting guru Zebbler (through April 9th). The dynamic duo, known for their infectious 100% live improvised performances will kick off their Spring tour this weekend in St Louis with a Mardi Gras style costume party before they crisscross the countryside with stops in Albuquerque, Denver, Austin, Nashville, Tallahassee Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, New York City and everywhere in between.

Throbbing bass and thudding beats are the signatures of this project from drummers Michael Travis and Jason Hann. The duo moves effortlessly from choppy dubstep to whip-smart, four-on-the-floor house to psychedelic trip-hop. It's a dance marathon and everyone's in it together. A nebulous beast, set lists are only broken up into tracks for the sake of posterity. In reality, changes in mood, energy, and inspiration are reflected "in real-time" by rhythmic and melodic shifts.

Because EOTO starts fresh every night, the band's evolutionary progress has been thrust into hyperspeed, eclipsing standard acts who return to their dusty catalog for every performance. The wobbly, buzz-saw bass and heavy backbeat style has become a signature of their sets, as heard on their live recordings and on the bands most recent 2009 studio release, Fire the Lazers. Newer live material has the duo co-opting sounds from outside the realm of electronic music with scratchy punk riffs and fuzzy sludge metal bass.

The perfect match for EOTO's incredible live improvised performances, projection designer known lovingly as "Zebbler" will also join the band with a custom animated projection show through April 9th. Zebbler was voted one of the top 20 VJ's in DJ magazine in 2007 and is known for delivering an organic visual odyssey with a genuinely live feel. The projection show will include featured content submitted by fans in a recent video contest as well as custom animations created just for the EOTO Spring Tour.

Along with a massive tour schedule and custom eye candy, the band is also launching the first tastes of their new fan-club ticketing program, offering fans an un-heard of $2 ticketing fees! EOTO is also offering the 2010 New Year performance from Denver as a free download to everyone who purchases a ticket for the entire year. EOTO Heads West For California Tour

EOTO will kick off 2011 on the west coast in less than two weeks in sunny Stateline, NV with stops in San Francisco and San Diego before kicking off their extensive Spring Tour in March. The band, known for their signature 100% live improvised performances, will also be playing alongside a number of well known openers including NastyNasty and Vibesquad for select west coast shows.

This is apparent when following the musical evolution of their live performances, which are recorded every night and made available to their fans for purchase. On EOTO's first 2 studio releases -- 2006's Elephants Only Talk Occasionally, and the 2008 release Razed, EOTO bounced playfully between house, trance, and breakbeat. A huge change in their sound came when Travis and Hann first saw, felt, and heard the cathartic vibes that dubstep could produce at DJ Skream's set at Shambhala during the Summer of 2008. This influence saw the duo become the first National, live, dubstep act in the US. The wobbly, buzz-saw bass and heavy backbeat style has become a signature of their sets, as heard on their live recordings and on the 2009 studio release, Fire the Lazers!!! Newer material has the duo co-opting sounds from outside the realm of electronic music with scratchy punk riffs and fuzzy sludge metal bass.

The duo will then set forth on their Spring Tour on March 18th of this year and will crisscross the united states with stops on both coasts including dates in St Louis, Denver, Atlanta, Boston, Washington DC and NYC to name a few.

The perfect match for EOTO's incredible live improvised performances, projection designer known lovingly as "Zebbler" will also join the band with a custom animated projection show for select dates along the Spring 2011 tour. Zebbler was voted one of the top 20 VJ's in DJ magazine, 2007 and is known for delivering an organic visually odyssey with a genuinely live feel.

FAN VIDEO CONTEST
To kick off the extensive tour, EOTO has launched a video contest allowing fans the opportunity to submit their own content for the live HD video show. Of course 3D animations, animations and complex sequences are encouraged for the overall appeal of the live performance. (Submissions: zebbler@zebbler.com)

Tony Adamo's What Is Hip

The recording of the song "What is Hip" on singer/songwriter, Tony Adamo's new CD (entitled WHAT IS HIP) came from a suggestion made by the legendary horn player and Tower of Power co-founder, Stephen "Doc" Kupka. During a recording session with Adamo and his producer/guitarist, Jerry Stucker, "Doc" suggested several TOP songs Adamo might want to cover. Adamo choose "What is Hip" and "This Time it's Real." Kupka, along with jazz great, Eddie Henderson hold up the horn section on "Hip." In the re-grooved "This Time It's Real," Mic Gillette, funk icon in his own right, wrote the horn arrangement and plays (trumpet & trombone) along with TOP horn member, Tom E. Poltzer (tenor sax). Poltzer plays lead solo with "Doc" Kupka on bari sax.

Talk about a kool struttin' and soul funkin' sound. Adamo is deep in the groove on these two Tower of Power hits. Producer/guitarist, Jerry Stucker loaded up the WHAT IS HIP CD with big city cool. Some of these great players include: Mike Clark (drums), Steve Gadd (drums), James Gadson (drums), Reggie McBride (bass), Richie Goods (bass), Freddie Washington (bass), Bill Summers (percussion), Robert Quintana (percussion), Blackbyrd McNight (guitar), Jerry Stucker (guitar), Neil Larsen (organ/piano), Rodney Franklin (piano), Melecio Magdaluyo (tenor sax/flute), Henry Hung (trumpet/trombone), and Sandy Griffith (background vocals).

Can you dig Adamo's new conception of voice n' funk with an infectious slice of soul? Get hip to WHAT IS HIP and be "souled" on the thirteen songs on his new CD.

WHAT IS HIP MP3's are now available on CDBABY and hard copies will be available at www.strokeland.com and CDBABY soon.
www.horndrivenradio.com will add songs into radio play

Jake Hertzog New CD + Miles Café Appearances

Jake Hertzog, one of the most original and exciting young guitarists on the scene, will be returning to the studio next month to record his third album. At 24 years old, Jake has already released two critically acclaimed fusion albums, toured the country as bandleader for Nickelodeon pop-stars Nat and Alex Wolff, and currently writes a jazz column for Guitar Player Magazine entitled “Hey Jazz Guy”.  He was also the youngest ever winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival Jazz Guitar Competition in 2006 and has performed and taught worldwide.

The upcoming record, a follow up to last year’s Patterns, will feature Jake’s all-star rhythm section, Victor Jones and Harvie S.  Harvie will also be taking on a new role in addition to bassist on this latest project as producer. “I am thrilled to be producing Jake Hertzog's upcoming CD- Jake is a serious and original artist who is becoming a major voice in contemporary music. I have been a part of his music from his first project as bassist and musical colleague --so this project holds special meaning for me.” Said Harvie, in regards to the upcoming collaboration.  In addition to hundreds of records on which Harvie has played bass, his production credits include Michael Brecker, Phil Woods, Chris Potter, Bob Mintzer, and Mike Stern.

Jake will be bringing his trio into one of New York’s most impressive recording studios, The Magic Shop, that has hosted artists such as The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Norah Jones and Arcade Fire.  “It’s the perfect place for the synthesis of jazz and indie rock”, says Hertzog. “That’s what this record will be all about, continuing more deeply in the direction of the last two albums.”  The Jake Hertzog Trio will be in the studio next month and the record will be released in late spring.

Performing with the venerated rhythm section of Harvie S (bass) and Victor Jones (drums) the Jake Hertzog Trio bends genres with their exhilarating live performances. This is an event not to miss, as the band prepares for their third studio album.

Pretty Lights Music Drops Two FREE EPs

Pretty Lights Music, the digital label from Pretty Lights’ Derek Vincent Smith, is launching a new website, and dropping two new EPs today. The purpose of the label and its innovative model is to supply his fans, and fans of electronic music at large, with the dopest beats from the freshest producers. The EPs are offered as free downloads with the option to donate for exactly that reason- releasing good music to as many listeners as possible is our priority for PLM.

Break Science’s new EP, Further Than Our Eyes Can See, and Paper Diamond’s debut EP Levitate both went up today. Also available on the site is the debut record from Michal Menert, Dreaming Of A Bigger Life, which went up in May 2010.

The new Break Science EP, Further Than Our Eyes Can See, consists of thought-provoking, highly-textured bass-pumping songs that include verses from some of today's most conscious artists: Brooklyn's Talib Kweli and Jahdan Blakkamoore, Sierra Leone's Bajah and India's Falu.

The new Paper Diamond EP, Levitate, has a raw energy and the kind of dramatic anticipation only a seasoned producer can incite. Driving beats and bass grab on tight while deep, rich tones rumble under layers of spacey synthesizers, sweet melodies, and catchy vocals.

For more information on Pretty Lights Music, and the artists mentioned above, please visit the official site!

HEADTRONICS MAKE RARE OHIO STOP!

Headtronics is an electronic project from DJ Logic (Medeski, Martin and Wood; John Popper Project), Steve Molitz (Particle; Phil Lesh and Friends) and Ohio bass prodigy Freekbass (Bootsy Collins; Buckethead) that has already received national attention though the artists have only performed a very limited number of dates.

The trio was birthed from a collaborative effort during last summer's Universal Church of Love and Music Funk Festival in PA. Afterward, Freekbass said, “It turned out to be one of those magical musical moments, so we decided to play some full shows together.” The accolades and influences of the individual artists of Headtronics ranges from funk, to rock and roll, to hip-hop, but together Logic, Molitz and Freekbass create electronic funk that appeals to fans of all genres.

With only select performances scheduled thus far for 2011, Headtronics (named by the legendary Bootsy Collins) will bring its electronic infused funk to Cleveland, OH, on Thursday, January 27, 2011. The fresh beats of DJ Logic, groundbreaking bass lines of Freekbass and truly unique keyboard skills of Steve Molitz create a style and show not to be missed!
