John Brown's Body & Katchafire @ the Fox

In 2006, John Brown's Body found itself at a crossroads, when the death of bassist Scott Palmer broke the band’s heart. After the tragedy, several longtime members left the group. But, a strange thing happened to the band staring at its own mortality: somehow, JBB emerged transformed and inspired.

A vital, creative energy sprang from the band’s new dynamic and new members. JBB found itself pushing more at the edges of reggae. New songs incorporated slinkier bass lines, denser instrumentation, less predictable rhythms. Beats became funkier, more drum-and-bass inflected.

JBB realized it was at a turning point: keep playing the same style of music, or follow the new sound and see where it leads. It was the same way the band members felt about reggae: how do you break rules and create something unique while still honoring the music that came before?

The answer is that it’s possible (and ultimately necessary) to push forward.  “Future Roots,” which the band began using to describe its sound as far back as its 2005 Pressure Points release, took another step forward. The current evolution builds on a reggae foundation, incorporating elements from different genres. The new songs are timeless and futuristic all at once, anchored and exploring simultaneously.

These explorations are instantly evident on Amplify, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Reggae Chart in October 2008, and its remix follow-up EP, Re-Amplify, released in March 2009 also debuting on the Billboard’s Reggae Top 10 Chart.

"Amplify is the sound of a band recreated, retooled and refreshed,” writes Canada’s Exclaim Magazine, and other reviewers agree: “Amplify has a forward thinking, fearless approach to tempos, beats and feel that expands the genre of reggae as a whole.” [Amazon].

While Amplify showed the world the fearless new directions JBB’s music is headed in, Re-Amplify took it even further by putting the band’s songs into the hands of outside remixers for the first time. Working with Gym Class Heroes’ Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo, Juno-Award-nominated producer Dubmatix, dance floor pioneer Tommie Sunshine, Australia’s urban roots powerhouse Blue King Brown and others, the band’s songs were stretched every which way, resulting in an EP that pleased fans and opened the band up to even further possibilities in their musical approach. How open? The band liked Dubmatix’s remix of “The Gold” so much, they switched to playing that version in their live sets.

JBB’s live show has the kind of organic, body-rocking sound that’s only possible with an 8-piece band where air tight drum and bass, a three piece horn section, and “the most gorgeous melodies in all of modern reggae music” [All Music Guide] meet a dubbed-out sound engineer. Where will JBB head next? The near future includes first ever tours of the UK and New Zealand, as well as initial work on the follow up to Amplify. What direction will the music take? Who knows, but whatever it is, it is sure to push boundaries.

Siriusmo To Preview Debut Album, Mosaik

After releasing dozens of singles & EPs on various Berlin-based record labels and remixing artists, including Scissor Sisters, Gossip, Chikinki, Simian Mobile Disco, Boys Noize, Digitalism, Chromeo, A-Trak, Munk and more, for over a decade, the inimitable Berlin producer, graffiti artist, ghost-painter & illustrator, Siriusmo (aka Moritz Friedrich), is set to release his debut album, Mosaik, March 1st on Monkeytown Records.

With Siriusmo’s previous releases striding confidently through a rich array of genres – from dubstep to disco, hip-hop to house, electro to experimental – his work is invested with incomparable diversity, eschewing outright any danger of a four-four snooze-fest over the course of an hour. Indeed, in its premeditated hodgepodge of styles, composite sonic totality and rugged texture, Mosaik couldn’t be more of a fitting rubric. Leading up this full-length release, Siriusmo is offering listeners a preview of what’s to come by featuring snippets of the record on his Soundcloud page. Several bits are already up, and the rest will be added by March 1st.

Betraying influences from the 70s to the present day and beyond, one foot keeps the door to the past ajar while the other kicks the door to the future wide open. The palpable funk and thumb-slap bass of opener, “High Together”, the pop-baroque of “Idiologie” and warped rap of “Bad Idea” all point towards Moritz's grounding in the records of Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and plentiful helpings of hip-hop. Any hint of nostalgia, however, is dragged kicking and screaming into a 21st Century discotheque where the bass is twisted, the beats are laden and space-age grandiosity envelops the whole.

Siriusmo’s timbre-palette is strikingly visceral and his understanding and appreciation of the intricacies of harmony prevail; every note is a corporal experience as well as an aural one. And for every drop of dancefloor sweat, there’s a soothing breeze to cool down. Individual melodic lines dance impishly around one another on “Signal”, for example, as sonic warmth is woven on a loom in your ears. Throughout Mosaik, Siriusmo makes an arresting switch from the beefy to the beautiful, from the body to the mind, as elegantly tapped organ keys play a melody with soulful poise. It's this type of canny counterpoint that provides the stitching throughout Mosaik's vibrant patchwork.

Emmitt-Nershi Band Announces New Bassist

With Tyler Grant recently announcing his departure from the Emmitt-Nershi Band fans have been anxiously awaiting the announcement of the new bass player for the band.  Today the Emmitt-Nershi Band website and facebook will be making the announcement that Johnny Grubb of Railroad Earth will be filling the spot.  Throughout Johnny's 7 years with Railroad Earth he had played with Billy Nershi on many occasions opening up the doors for this opportunity.  The bands lineup change is effective as of now and all upcoming dates will be played with Drew Emmitt (mandolin/vocals), Billy Nershi (guitar/vocals), Andy Torn (banjo) and Johnny Grubb (bass).  Below is the official announcement that will be posted on the webpage and facebook from Johnny.

Hello, World!  Rather than make someone else come up with an announcement for who the new bassist will be, I thought I'd try to follow in Tyler's gracious footsteps and do it myself.

My name is Johnny Grubb.  I went to school at Appalachian State University and saw Leftover Salmon many, many times my first couple of years there.  After ASU, I spent a good year rolling burritos, washing dishes and playing bluegrass in my hometown of Atlanta before serendipitously running into John Skehan of Railroad Earth one night at a gig of ours.  They just happened to be on the lookout for a new bassist and long story short, I spent 7 years in that band, playing several metric tons of great music and meeting lots of great folks all over the country.

One of the folks I met and had the good fortune of playing with on many occasions was Mr. Billy Nershi.  RRE was signed to SCI Fidelity Records for a number of years and we got to be friends with a bunch of the SCI/Mad House folks in time.  RRE always was and still is a full-time commitment. I just couldn't keep it up with the birth of my second boy last January, so I bowed out a year ago and spent this past year getting a web development consultancy off the ground, getting to know the virtues and vices of the various open source software scenes out there and being home with my wife and boys for the first time ever.  The itch to play some bass didn't come back until just a few months ago after getting into the most recent Larry Keel and Stringduster's CDs.

In any event, I cruised by this website last month to see what they were working with from a technical standpoint.  The meaning of Tyler's announcement that he was leaving didn't really hit me until the next day, at least not the part where I should give Billy a call and see who they have lined up.  I wasn't looking for another full-time gig, nor to be in another rock band per se, so after speaking with Billy and Drew it seemed like the parameters were pretty well lined up for everybody and here I am!

Just to put a bow on top of everything, I met Andy years ago when he was with Larry Keel and didn't find out until the last few weeks that he was a member of the Broke Mountain Bluegrass band with Travis from the Infamous Stringdusters and my good friend Anders from Greensky Bluegrass.  It's nice to be a part of this small world and I want to thank my new bandmates for having me aboard.  I will see you all soon.

Pretty Lights Launches Record Label, First Two Releases of 2011!

Fresh off an incredibly successful year, Derek Vincent Smith (aka Pretty Lights) is ready to give his fans a gift to start the New Year off right- the announcement of his own record label, Pretty Lights Music, which will release free new music in early 2011. Derek’s objectives are simple- he wants to supply his fans, and fans of electronic music at large, with free music from the artists he believes in and supports.

Today, he’s thrilled to announce two new digital releases (in addition to Michael Menert) on Pretty Lights Music, both due out January 25th. Break Science will be releasing their new EP, Further Than Our Eyes Can See, and Paper Diamond will be dropping his debut EP, Levitate.

Raised in the cultural hotbed of New York City, Break Science's Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee fuse the city's rich musical legacy- jazz, funk & soul, with a deep-rooted connection to its hip-hop heritage to create their own take on modern electronic music. Break Science's  EP, Further Than Our Eyes Can See, consists of thought-provoking, highly-textured, bass-pumping songs that include verses from some of today's most conscious artists: Brooklyn's Talib Kweli and Jahdan Blakkamoore, Sierra Leone's Bajah and India's Falu. In addition to Break Science, Adam Deitch also doubles as Pretty Lights’ touring drummer.

Colorado based producer Alex B is rolling out big tunes under the new guise of Paper Diamond in 2011. The Paper Diamond sound has raw energy and the kind of dramatic anticipation only a seasoned producer can incite. Driving beats and bass grab on tight while deep, rich tones rumble under layers of spacey synthesizers, sweet melodies, and catchy vocals. Paper Diamond's debut EP, Levitate, will be available for free download via Pretty Lights Music on January 25, 2011.

-Davy Knowles on guitar. Prolific. Prodigal. Profound. That is Davy Knowles. Hailing from the Isle of Man, the tiny kingdom in the middle of the Irish Sea, might have posed a challenge to that childhood epiphany for a lesser talent. Instead, Davy just borrowed his father's acoustic guitar and painstakingly learned to play "Sultans of Swing" by ear. A true virtuoso.

National Jazz Museum in Harlem Jan. 3 - Jan. 9, 2011

The electric bass was actually Christian McBride’s first instrument. He began playing at age 8 when Jaco Pastorious was the bass guitar's standard bearer, having created masterpieces with the group Weather Report as well as his eponymously titled first solo recording. Jaco Pastorious transformed the bass guitar into an instrument of fine art, and there are few better, if any, to discuss Pastorious than McBride. This will be a night to remember - whatever you do, make it to this free class, and bring a friend.

Al Di Meola Visits Strawberry Fields

On 'Pursuit of Radical Rhapsody,' out March 15th on Telarc International, a division of Concord Music Group, bona fide guitar hero and virtuoso of the highest order Al Di Meola teams up with members of his World Sinfonia ensemble, jazz bass great Charlie Haden and GRAMMY-award winning Cuban jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba on a hauntingly beautiful and deeply moving version of the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” that imbues the classic pop tune with profound feeling, and shows how dazzling Di Meola's electric guitar can be even when delicately restrained.

Di Meola's laid-back interplay with Haden's acoustic bass, Gonzalo Rubalcaba's piano, Peter Kazsas' drums and Gumbi Ortiz and Mino Cinelu's percussion creates a wistfulness appropriate to John Lennon's hazy memories of a garden near his childhood home.

Greensky Bluegrass CD Release

The music that Greensky Bluegrass performs can best be described as a breath of fresh air, relaxing, invigorating and a welcomed change from the current climate.  The Kalamazoo, MI based quintet uses traditional bluegrass instruments – dobro, banjo, guitar, upright bass and mandolin – to create original songs that are unique, yet familiar and cover songs unconventional to their roots (The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan).

The Midwestern boys had an incredible 2010, touring nationally, performing alongside Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead and featured at the Rockygrass Festival in Lyons, CO, on the main stage at the Grey Fox Festival in upstate New York and in front of an audience of thousands at the All Good Festival in West Virginia. Additionally, the quintet delighted campers at the All Good Festival by performing a surprise midnight to sunrise ‘Guerilla Grass’ jam session that was captured by CNN and featured here.

Greensky Bluegrass has quickly become one of the most exciting touring acts on the road today, performing their trademark sound nationwide at over 160 spirited shows a year. This energy is captured perfectly on their live double-CD releases, All Access: Volume One and Volume Two. All Access is a series of recordings of select shows from the road, Volume One was released and subsequently sold-out in 2010 and Volume Two was released later in that same year.  Each installment offers nearly 30 songs, originals and covers.

Since winning the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest, Greensky has been touring constantly and all the hard work is certainly paying off. Recent highlights are too many to list, but include selling out venues in many parts of the country, sharing the stage with musical heroes, getting asked to play shows with the likes of Tony Rice and Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band and Railroad Earth. Greensky Bluegrass is Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (upright bass) and Paul Hoffman (mandolin).

Our goal is to educate people through music and by talking about the history of the music. This generation is spiritual bankrupt (and increasingly financially so) and in need of something authentic. We seek to provide that communal experience. Join in on the project, sing along, learn some history and contribute any way you can. Stockholm Syndrome @ the Fox Theatre | 2/26/11

Bill Bass & Boulder Weekly are proud to present Stockholm Syndrome at the Fox Theatre on Saturday, February 26th.

Stockholm Syndrome is made up of an all-star cast. When Widespread Panic bass player Dave Schools and acclaimed singer/songwriter Jerry Joseph of the Jackmormons decided to collaborate, each initially thought the side project would be a cool, if temporary, change of pace. With one studio album released, a new studio album set for release in early 2011 and multiple tours behind them, Stockholm Syndrome has transcended being just a side project. Stockholm Syndrome is a band.

The band’s unusual choice for a name, Stockholm Syndrome, refers to the psychological phenomenon in which a hostage bonds with his kidnappers. It seemed an apt moniker for the pair’s somewhat convoluted relationship. Now all Schools and Joseph needed was a band.

They put together their “Dream Team” including Eric McFadden (a San Francisco-based guitarist who has worked with Keb Mo’, Les Claypool and George Clinton’s P-Funk All Stars), Danny Louis (an Upstate NY based keyboard virtuoso widely known for his role in Gov’t Mule and Cheap Trick) and drummer Wally Ingram (an L.A.-based drummer who has worked with Jackson Browne, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman and David Lindley). All three musicians were on board and are now back for more live dates, an in-store recording for release and a pending studio album.

Stockholm Syndrome is ready to serve up its potent brew of provocative songs and thrilling, genre-transcending musicianship to worldwide audiences. Schools is already contemplating the future, “We’ll take it as far as it wants to go. I think that everyone is really enjoying playing together…it ceased to be a recording project and became a band.”

There aren’t many bands with the ability to hit the ground running the way Stockholm Syndrome did. And now that they’re launched, they show no sign of slowing down soon.
