The MOTET Dig Deep with summer album release

With its 6th release, Dig Deep, The Motet once again proves that it is a group committed to exploring and pushing the sonic envelope, while still remaining dedicated to the musical traditions that have defined their sound. A heavy-horned afrobeat influence countered with a textural blanket of electronica, this album showcases the talents and strengths of the cast of characters that drummer and producer Dave Watts has assembled. Keyboardist Joey Porter lays down the funk under the coursing melodies of saxophonist Dominic Lalli in pure Motet fashion, with the ever-driving beats of Watts' masterful rhythmic production pushing the music through sonic peaks and valleys that tantalize and invigorate listeners. If you've loved The Motet for years or are just tuning in, listen up. You won't be disappointed.

The Motet is known for its revolving musicians and a breadth of musical influences, and Dig Deep plays to the strengths of many former and current members. Bassists Garrett Sayers and Paul McDaniel both shine brilliantly on Dig Deep, adding the sonic drive that is characteristic of The Motet's sound, which has steadily morphed and evolved over the last ten years. Sayers' bass solo on 'Guru' is a perfect example of his technical virtuosity, and with this, Watts as a producer has captured a quintessential Motet moment. The title track 'Dig Deep' showcases another side of The Motet low-end, heavy-bass sound, with McDaniel laying down raw grooves in an open section that is peppered with Watts' sonic explorations.

Longtime fans of The Motet will be happy to hear Jans Ingber's voice on 'Push,' a track that was born from an improvisational moment during the band's New Years 2009 show. Last featured on The Motet's 2000 release Play, Beth Quist's soaring vocals are highlighted on the Fela Kuti track 'Kalakuta Show' and the tune 'The Luxury of Doubt,' a collaborative effort with Watts. Throughout Dig Deep, percussionist Scott Messersmith adds his signature textural rhythms, anchoring the evolutionary sound of the band in its Afro-Cuban and West African roots. His contributions are particularly salient in the afrobeat tunes 'Mighty' and 'Roforofo Fight." Guitarists Mike Tiernan and Zivanni Masango both add their talents on Dig Deep, as do Danny Sears on trumpet and John Stuart on baritone saxophone. With this mix of talented musicians contributing to the album, it is no wonder the album sounds as good as it does. But at the helm is drummer Dave Watts, simultaneously embodying the roles of bandleader, musician, composer, and producer. It is Watts' creative imagination that drives Dig Deep, mixing recorded and sampled tracks that seamlessly carry the music forward throughout the album. As a drummer, Watts has been called "the human metronome." His sense of timing and polyrhythmic understanding is what has made him a force in the live music scene for over twenty years.

Dig Deep is his most in-depth exploration into production work thus far. Watts has amply represented the layered electronica-funk vibe that has begun to characterize The Motet's sound over the last few years, and he has truly "dug deep" to bring you Dig Deep.

Boombox Summer Tour & Fall Release

zionExcitement is growing around the news that musical masterminds Russ Randolph and Zion Rock Godchaux are donning their creative caps in anticipation of a fall release of completely brand new material. The revolutionary producer/singer-songwriter/DJ/guitarist duo, together known as BoomBox, has amassed legions of loyal fans through their innovative blend of decades of music history and popular culture. On their latest release, downriverelectric, BoomBox are giving back to the fans for their years of dedicated support, allowing no singles or samples to be released before the record's actual release date this fall.

In a world where singles, reviews and advance album copies are distributed months before an official release, BoomBox is turning the tables on the music industry by doing the exact opposite. Those hoping to get a taste of what's to come from BoomBox are out of luck, as the contents of downriverelectric remain a mystery. Will the album feature the cosmic interplay of infectious rhythms and shimmering guitars? Did BoomBox treat audiences on their highly successful summer tour to snippets and samples of their most eagerly awaited release to date? Only Randolph and Godchaux know those answers, simply adding to the suspense surrounding downriverelectric. What we do know is that the album will be recorded at the renowned Heart of Gold Records, capturing the magic that is the Muscle Shoals sound. Like legendary musicians Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin and The Allman Brothers summoning the spirits of Muscle Shoals, BoomBox is poised to write the next great chapter in the community's rich music history. Pushing the boundaries of creativity to its extreme limits, downriverelectric promises to be BoomBox's best and most adventurous work to date.

Toubab Krewe recently joined Smith at his home studio in Kingston, where they collaborated on several as-yet unreleased recordings. About Live at the Orange Peel:

Toubab Krewe’s new album has won wide acclaim since its release in April. Produced by GRAMMY Award-winning producer Steven Heller, Live at the Orange Peel captures the band’s outstanding 2007-2008 New Year's run. All of the songs are previously unreleased and continue to mix American rock with the West African musical traditions the band fell in love with on their travels. Along the way, they explore the worlds of surf and zydeco, fusing it all together into what the Village Voice describes as "a futuristic, psychedelic, neo-griot frenzy" and Honest Tune hails as "one of the most innovative voices in music today." The new album features collaborations with legendary spoken word artist Umar Bin Hassan of The Last Poets and fiddler Rayna Gellert of Uncle Earl.

EOTO Set to Play Two Shows During Summer Solstice

The left coast breakbeat, glitch-hop and house duo known as EOTO is set to play two monumental shows during the Summer Solstice in California on June 19 and June 20, on top of their already jam-packed festival schedule. Since the new year rolled around has toured relentlessly and played more than 80 shows and making a name for themselves as pioneers of a new sound, an innovative blend of live instrumentation and digital mixing. Both the June 19 show at Rhythm Lounge in Long Beach, CA, and the June 20 show at The Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA, should be another set of landmarks performances for the ground-shattering, beat innovators.

eotoFeaturing Jason Hann and Michael Travis, formerly of the progressive jam outfit The String Cheese Incident, EOTO is a shot of adrenaline to the heart of the music industry. Differing in sonic stature from their mixing forefathers, the typical EOTO live experience is 100% atypical, meaning nothing is pre-recorded, nothing is pre-looped and no set is pre-planned. Every night is a distinctive journey into the musical minds of Hann and Travis, each feeding off of the other’s creativity and the audience’s vibes. EOTO combines cutting-edge technology with live instrumental performance to create truly original and melodic dance music in the moment.

No group on the circuit tours as hard as EOTO and nothing has changed for the foreseeable future, save festival dates in exchange for the night-after-night venue spots they have played so far in 2009. Hann and Travis have been from west to east and everywhere in between in just five months and are primed to play at least 35 shows between now and the end of September. It will be a nice break for the two to venture back indoors for the pair of Summer Solstice shows, where the bone-quaking and mind-rippling beats they create spontaneously are well at home. By the time they reach California, EOTO will have more than proven they are big enough and calculated enough for the wide open spaces of the festival tour, which includes stops at Summercamp, Wakarusa, SONIC BLOOM, Rothbury Festival, Camp Bisco, The Phamily Reunion, Shambhala Festival and Earthdance.

Umphrey's Releases Live DVD & Announces Summer Dates

Umphrey's McGee is gearing up for a busy summer. On June 2nd the band releases their new DVD, Umphrey's McGee - Live.  Recorded during their 2007 performance for PBS's Soundstage, Umphrey's McGee - Live is offers an incredible 13-song set on DVD, including six favorites not shown during the PBS broadcast, which premiered this past February.   Also this summer, Umphrey's McGee celebrates the European release of their highly acclaimed new studio album, Mantis. Look for the band on tour this summer, including a just-announced ROTHBURY appearance, a run of co-bill dates with Matisyahu, two nights with Dave Matthews Band, and even some stops at Chicago's baseball fields (it wouldn't be summer for Umphrey's McGee without baseball!).

umLegendary on the live music circuit, Chicago-based Umphrey's McGee has perfected the art of progressive improvisation.  With swirling guitar textures, multi-faceted arrangements and their signature blend of power and finesse, the sextet brings jamming to a new level.  During the summer of 2007, Umphrey's McGee came home to Chicago to record a special live performance for the award-winning PBS music series Soundstage at WTTW's Grainger Studio. UMPHREY'S McGEE - LIVE features over two hours of dazzling music presented in High-Definition and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, plus two bonus tracks (including "Made to Measure" off their most recent studio album Mantis).  A visual showcase of the band's spontaneity and innovative prowess, UMPHREY'S McGEE - LIVE, is a must-own for all music enthusiasts and progressive rock fans, and is available in stores and online for $19.99 SRP.

Also this summer, Umphrey's McGee's skips across the pond with the European release of their new studio album, Mantis. The special 2-disc European edition of Mantis, released by Floating World Records/Evangeline, is now available in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Scandanavia, and the UK. Mantis is Umphrey's fifth studio release, and their most successful to date.  Here's what U.S. critics had to say:

"...the sleekly constructed tunes...sparkle with a sweetness and soul that's more than the sum of their influences."- Entertainment Weekly

"...meticulous... If complexity is the standard by which it should be judged, Mantis warranted the buildup [of its release]." - New York Times

"A beautiful music gumbo... The band pulls off the trans-genre trick without a hitch."
- Associated Press

"...their slickest and most ambitious tunes yet." - Rolling Stone

Look for Umphrey's McGee on tour this summer, including an unlikely pairing - Notre Dame alums Umphrey's McGee with Hasidic reggae-man Matisyahu, two nights with Dave Matthews Band, plus festival stops including ROTHBURY, All Good, High Sierra and others.

Of personal note for the Chicago natives are their confirmed appearances at Chicago's baseball fields. The band will sing the National Anthem and "God Bless America" at Wrigley Field on Sunday, May 31st, when the Cubs host playoff rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers. Then, on June 8th, the band heads to the South Side for their fifth performance at US Cellular Field for the Chicago White Sox versus the Detroit Tigers. On this official "Umphrey's McGee Fan Appreciation Night," the band will deliver a three-song acoustic set from home plate, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Need more baseball? Catch Umphrey's McGee's music in a new movie about the Chicago Cubs. Titled "We Believe," the movie will be out in late spring and will premiere at the Chicago Theater on June 12th.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey Summer Tour

Evolution defines the spirit of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. In fact, evolution is what allows this Tulsa, Oklahoma institution to thrive. Greater than the sum of its parts, JFJO is hitting new creative peaks in an already historic 15-year career. Founding pianist Brian Haas and drummer Josh Raymer made the decision at the outset of 2009 to expand what was one of the fiercest modern jazz trios in recent memory to a quartet by adding lap steel guitarist Chris Combs and upright bassist Matt Hayes. Upon the departure of original bassist Reed Mathis at the end of '08, longtime JFJO fans wondered aloud what might become of JFJO. The new line-up quickly laid all fears to rest as they re-emerged with a bristling energy and an invigorated sound. Hitting the road with something to prove, they toured the U.S. for the better part of early '09, even visiting cities they hadn't played in years. In addition, as a thank you to fans for their loyal support, they released their final album with Mathis, entitled Winterwood, as a free download on their website.

Jacob Fred JazzFor those yet to hear the latest incarnation of JFJO, a description of their new sound is in order--after all this is a band once described by Signal To Noise as having "a breadth and vision nearly untouched in modern jazz except by the likes of Wayne Shorter and Bill Frisell." With the addition of Combs on lap steel and Hayes on acoustic bass, JFJO has perhaps invented its own genre: red dirt jazz, equal parts earthy and nimble, pastoral and sweeping, elegant and rollicking.  The quartet taps into their birthright, drawing upon "The Tulsa Sound" born of hometown heroes like JJ Cale and Leon Russell. These roots grow up into a jazz foundation that's built firmly upon the influence of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk among others.

Last month JFJO began documenting its rebirth at 58NS Studios in Brooklyn. The sessions are currently being mixed in Tulsa for an EP to be released in late summer on the quartet's own Kinnara Records. Until then JFJO will be playing select club dates and festivals around the country. While nothing is ever certain in the JFJO universe, it's clear for the time being that their fearless vessel has navigated the storm to arrive beneath sunshine and blue skies on the high and open seas.  The odyssey continues.

Upcoming Tour Dates are:

A three-show run in Utah opens the tour, with the rock, pop, bluegrass and funk then heading to Nederland, Colorado. A run down the Front Range – including a stop in Denver – will lead the band back into the Rocky Mountains, before three southern Colorado shows push the band back into Utah, with two huge back-to-back shows in Moab, Utah.

EqualeyesThe tour sees the band return to its roots, where fans know the jams and the lyrics, where the feel good vibes of Boise, Idaho, are at home in both Utah and Colorado. The smart lyrics and riding guitar work of Jeff Crosby allows the funky rhythm section of bassist Tom Borda and drummer William Prescott to work their magic. Prescott brings a refreshing tap on the kit and Borda is a wizard on the bass, with each solid enough for the other to roam. Daniel Blumenfeld brings an added voice in his keyboard and accordion playing, rounding out what makes for a road trip of sort in each song, a journey with a smile and one arm hanging out the window. Just don’t be surprised when a big bridge leads into big volume and a tap of the distortion pedal.

The band planted its roots in 2006 as a three-piece exploring bluegrass, reggae, pop and rock. Just as they were about to finish the studio album While I’m Alive in 2007, Blumenfeld joined the band and took it up a notch. While still exploring some reggae, the band now prides itself on writing catchy, pop, rock, bluegrass and funk songs, original tunes with bountiful melody and big themes. They craft songs the fans can sing along to and the album takes on nearly ever genre, exploiting each of the musicians’ rich musical talent.

The band is primed for the May run with big ideas of venturing into other states to follow, allowing the rest of the country to hear the electricity that has been building in the Mountain West over the last two years. Equaleyes returns home to Boise, Idaho, on June 4 to play a moe. after party.
