CAKE: READYING SIXTH STUDIO ALBUM USING 100% SOLAR ENERGY

CAKE--one of the most principled, enduring, self-reliant, and best-selling artists in post-alternative rock--are currently in the midst of recording their sixth studio album, with an entirely green twist: the new project is being written, rehearsed and recorded entirely with solar power. During the recording process, CAKE is sharing the results with their fans via a set of free ring tones--each based on a song from the upcoming album--released via the band’s mailing list.

Starting today, the first of six ring tones based on brand new album tracks will be released through CAKE’s mailing list. The first ringtone, titled “Long Time,” is only available for download to members of the CAKE mailing list; to sign up, visit: http://cakemusic.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi. Every six weeks, a ringtone for a new CAKE song will be released via e-blast to all mailing list members up until the new album launch in Spring 2010.

Says trumpeter VINCE DIFIORE: “All the parts we've written for a song work symbiotically for the whole; however, some hooks have enough merit on their own to justify offering them as utterly satisfying ring tones." "We weren't sure if people were still even listening to albums,” adds songwriter and lead vocalist JOHN McCREA, “so we thought we might just release ring tones and car commercial music instead. This allows people who own cell phones a chance to sample our wares long before an album is ever released. That's what we know people want. Ring tones." And bassist GABRIEL NELSON says simply: "We are proud to offer high quality, custom crafted ring tones to listeners worldwide."

Recently honored as one of the top 10 “greenest” bands on the planet in a special issue of Billboard, CAKE teamed with Borrego Solar to convert their entire Sacramento recording studio into solar power. The innovative group documented their break away from the city’s energy grid, as illustrated by this video of CAKE’s solar conversion: www.cakemusic.com/solar.html. The group’s decision to record their forthcoming album entirely with solar power was made for both artistic and environmental reasons: “It just seemed like the right thing to do,” says McCREA. “I believe in science, and science is telling us that we need to make adjustments. Living in California, it seemed like a waste not to take advantage of all the free electricity.” DIFIORE chimes in: “We work in the spirit of cooperation, and when there is something like solar energy above your head, there is a little bit more levity added.”

Founded in 1992 and reaching worldwide attention on the strength of their platinum albums Fashion Nugget and Prolonging The Magic, CAKE have been cited by Rolling Stone as creators of “a modern pop that is both mechanized and organic...highly developed and virtually unique.” Highlights in recent years range from raves for their latest studio album Pressure Chief (2004), and a subsequent compilation of unreleased tracks B-sides and Rarities (2007), to major success in concert, including multiple runs of their self-founded ‘Unlimited Sunshine’ tour and solo dates in large theaters and arenas worldwide.

CAKE reissued their first album, Motorcade of Generosity, on June 9th as an enhanced CD. The re-issue includes previously unavailable video footage and limited edition decal. The 180g vinyl version of the album features limited edition poster art and sold out in two days.

Tell Congress to vote Yes for President Obama's clean energy budget

In the coming days and weeks, Congress will consider a budget resolution based on President Obama's proposed federal budget for fiscal year 2010. The president's proposal is a blueprint for major visionary investments that would direct billions of dollars toward the development of clean energy technologies and green jobs.

It is particularly important for Congress to pass a budget resolution that reflects the president's commitment to solving global warming. Capping global warming pollution is the cornerstone of the comprehensive effort we need to create jobs, improve our national security and protect our planet. Every year the auction and allocation of global warming pollution permits would generate billions of dollars, which would then be used for middle class tax cuts and clean energy technology research and development.

The president's proposed budget also includes important funding increases across a broad spectrum of environmental programs, many of which were slashed during the Bush administration. Specific proposals include investments in clean energy, clean water and public transportation; increasing the Environmental Protection Agency's budget; and cleaning up the nation's worst hazardous waste sites.

What to do
Send a message urging your senators and representative to vote YES on a budget resolution that provides the resources necessary to cap global warming pollution and invest in clean energy solutions and other environmental priorities.

NEW ENERGY PROJECTS TO PLAY BIG ROLE IN RECOVERY

The Colorado Governor’s Energy Office said today it is establishing a competitive bid process to fund shovel-ready New Energy Economy projects with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.

The Energy Office also is co-sponsoring a recovery conference for utility-company officials on Tuesday, featuring Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien, Energy Office Director Tom Plant, Public Utilities Commission Chairman Ron Binz and many others.

“President Obama last month chose to sign the recovery act into law in Colorado to showcase Colorado’s New Energy Economy,” Gov. Ritter said. “For the past two years, we’ve attracted new companies and created thousands of new jobs by establishing Colorado as a national leader in the manufacturing, production and research of clean energy.

“The recovery act will help drive the New Energy Economy forward by creating new opportunities for families, businesses and communities all across Colorado,” Gov. Ritter said.

The Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) will issue a request for shovel-ready project proposals at the end of March or in early April, depending on the timing of guidelines from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The GEO defines shovel-ready as an energy efficiency or renewable energy infrastructure project or program that has been extensively developed and for which there is a clear path to implementation within 90 days from the time of award.

To submit questions or ideas about this process, go to www.colorado.gov/energy/recovery/inquiry.asp . For more information on shovel-ready projects go to www.colorado.gov/energy/recovery/shovel-ready.asp.

On Tuesday, the GEO is teaming with several state agencies to host an energy-related recovery conference focused on how Colorado gas and electric utilities and their customers can benefit from the recovery act.

The conference is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel ballroom at 1881 Curtis St. in downtown Denver.

For an agenda and registration information, click here or visit www.dora.state.co.us/puc/agendas/03-10-09ARRA-Symposium.pdf.

Other co-sponsors include the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade and the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Critical Vote on Clean Energy...Make your voice heard!

gas guzzlers are lame- for the Grateful Web

Next week, the full House of Representatives will vote on an energy bill that will boost the fuel efficiency of new cars for the first time in decades. Then the Senate will cast its vote.

Send your members of Congress an email message in support of clean energy right now:

The big automakers are going all out to weaken this bill. Your senators and representative need to hear from you this week - BEFORE that bill hits the floor for the decisive vote.

It's easy. Just click here and tell them to support a bill ensuring that:

* New passenger vehicles get an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020.

* Utilities produce 15 percent of their electricity from

renewable sources by 2020.

An energy bill with these two centerpiece provisions will cut America's oil dependence, make a down payment on reducing global warming pollution, and usher in a cleaner energy future.

Even if you sent Congress a message about clean energy back in September, please be sure to send another email message at this critical juncture.

Your message from back home can do more to counter the auto lobbyists and deliver a clean energy future than any other single weapon we've got.

We've waited two decades for Congress to pass legislation that could start breaking the chains of our enslavement to the automakers and Big Oil. We're unlikely to get a second chance for many years to come.

Please seize this one chance for a clean energy future. Make your voice heard on Capitol Hill today!

Big vote coming on clean energy bill. Make your voice heard.

Pearl Jam Selects Bonneville Environmental Foundation for Renewable Energy Programs

Pearl Jam- for the Grateful Web

Pearl Jam announced today that Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) was selected as one of nine non-profit organizations to receive a combined total of $100,000 to launch its 2006 Carbon Portfolio Strategy. The band's initiative is the latest demonstration of its commitment to solve global warming and provide information to music fans worldwide about what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint. The band also is inviting its fans to make their own contributions in support of the initiative, as a way of taking action against climate change.

BEF and the other organizations were selected according to their advancement of approaches to develop clean, renewable energy options and other climate change solutions.

"We looked for partners to put our contributions towards the greatest use in combating global climate change," said Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard. "BEF was an obvious choice when we considered the renewable energy component."

Pearl Jam has been a supporter of BEF since the 2004 Vote for Change tour, when Gossard organized some of the participating bands to fund the installation of small-scale renewable energy projects in many of the states where it toured. In addition to Pearl Jam and Gossard, participants included Bonnie Raitt, The Dave Matthews Band, and REM. BEF's role was to identify the Vote for Change beneficiary projects, and to manage the ongoing installation efforts.

"With the Vote for Change initiative, Pearl Jam helped BEF expand the scope of its renewable energy programs to reach new audiences in the Midwest, Southeast, and Eastern states," said Tom Starrs, Vice President of Marketing and Sales & Chief Operating Officer of Bonneville Environmental Foundation. "With the Carbon Portfolio Strategy, Pearl Jam is helping BEF reach an even broader audience with the message that it's easy to take action today to make our energy supply cleaner, safer, and more secure. We are very grateful for the band's continuing support."

bBEF will use the contributions from Pearl Jam's Carbon 2006 Portfolio Strategy to support its renewable energy initiatives, including its Green Tag programs. BEF's Green Tag programs enable individuals, businesses, and other organizations to offset their carbon footprint by supporting renewable energy projects that deliver solar and wind power into the nation's power grid.

The organizations designated as beneficiaries of Pearl Jam's Carbon Portfolio Strategy include: the American Solar Energy Society, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Cascade Land Conservancy, Conservation International, EarthCorps, Green Empowerment, Honor the Earth, IslandWood, and Washington Clean Energy Initiative.
