Umphrey's Announces Innovative Pre-Order for Mantis

photos by Tim Hurley- for the Grateful Web

Umphrey's McGee launches a one-of-a-kind pre-order campaign for their highly anticipated new studio release, Mantis (January 20, 2009 / SCI Fidelity Records). The pre-order, which offers an MP3 download of the album in addition to the traditional compact disc, also promises unprecedented downloadable bonus content that will actually increase in volume depending on how many pre-orders are received, and will use innovative PUSH(TM) technology by Digital Insert to continue delivering exclusive bonus material throughout 2009.  The Mantis pre-order offer is available now.

Over 2 years in the making, Mantis pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement and group interplay.  And in an Umphrey's McGee first, the album offers 100% new material - a drastic change of pace for a band whose typical modus operandi is to work out the material live on-stage before recording studio versions.  Coupled with an innovative pre-order campaign offering unique bonus material incentives where fans can actually influence the amount of extra material that is offered, Mantis is creating plenty of anticipation and chatter among fans and industry alike.

"We wanted to do something special for the fans, make this release as exciting for them as it is for us," explains Umphrey's McGee's Jake Cinninger.  "We wanted to put the reins in their hands, get them involved in spreading the word about the album, and give the release a human touch by giving the fans more.  It's the give and take between us and the fans that makes it possible for us to tour and grow as a band; the fans play an important role in everything we do."

Mantis bonus material "Part I" offers bonus tracks for pre-order customers - outtakes and alternate recordings of songs on Mantis, tracks culled from the Umphrey's McGee archives including often requested rarities from the band's annual acoustic holiday shows, tracks from historical "Taper Appreciation Nights," plus odds and ends from studio jams, sound checks and more.  The more pre-orders that are purchased, the more tracks the band will unlock. Fans can use the free Mantis widget to track the growing list of free bonus material, which will be delivered via digital download the week of the album's release.

Mantis bonus material "Part II" incorporates PUSH(TM) technology by Digital Insert to deliver additional bonus content throughout 2009.  PUSH requires no software installation or serial number; by simply putting the Mantis CD in your CD-ROM drive, the disc will act as a "key" to an Umphreys.com micro-site where fans get access to exclusive 2009 content as it becomes available - such as recent live versions of songs from Mantis , rehearsals and impromptu "bus jams," and more. Considering Umphrey's musical creativity and smart sense of humor, 2009's bonus material is sure to offer plenty of surprises.

This pre-order is yet another innovative music experience to be offered by Umphrey's McGee, who have proven adaptive and inventive both in music and business over the last 10 years. Through online community building, creative web-based promotions, and open taping policies allowing live music sharing among fans, Umphrey's McGee has harnessed the internet's momentum to spread their music far and wide.  The band's download store UMLive.net is an archive of their ever-diverse live performances, hosting downloads of over 300 shows, while umphreys.com hosts the iTunes friendly UM Podcast which releases two 75-minute episodes of live material each month to its 20,000 subscribers. Since 2001, Umphrey's has released soundboard recordings of each night's concert immediately after the show in both physical and digital formats -and each show typically sells upwards of 300 copies per night.  The band's unique approach to online and digital distribution, paired with word of mouth buzz, has helped Umphrey's McGee sell out shows nationwide while keeping their fans a top priority.

Look for Umphrey's McGee to bring the songs on Mantis to the live stage beginning in January -when the band will work out the songs live and without a net, and fans can watch how the songs evolve as the band experiments, deconstructs, reconstructs and realizes the full potential of the new material in a live context.

Until then, Umphrey's McGee wraps up the year with dates in U.S. cities east and west and points between, including their annual New Year's run in their hometown of Chicago.  This year, the band hosts three nights at the city's stunning Auditorium Theatre, where they'll be joined on stage by musical icons Buddy Guy, Stanley Jordan, Joshua Redman, Jeff Coffin, and Koko Taylor.

Umphrey's McGee to Perform in Portland

Umphrey's McGee released Jimmy Stewart 2007 this past June.  This digital-only release features the band's best improvisations of the past year.  Jimmy Stewart 2007 is a limited edition release, first available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and thereafter available digitally through UMLive.net and iTunes.  Plus, the UM download will offer up a companion podcast with an additional 70 minutes of material that did not make the Jimmy Stewart 2007 album.

Jimmy Stewart 2007 is an ambitious effort to compile a year's worth of the band's inspired improvisations into two seamless 70-minute "mixtapes."  At over 100 shows a year, Umphrey's McGee delves into these spontaneous compositions, engaging their fans as they feed off each other's energy.  A Zappa-inspired language of body gestures and hand-signals allow the band to break structure while creating an entirely new arrangement.  As Umphrey's McGee continues to evolve, each live performance showcases the band's "Jimmy Stewart" approach to structured improvisation.

Also, Umphrey's McGee released a digital-only live series titled CompendiUM.  Available through iTunes and UMLive.net, CompendiUM offers live recordings of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007.  Included in the series are the band's Boulder, Colorado show from March 6th, their Portland, Oregon show on June 7th, and the Chicago show from December 30th, among others.

In the ever-changing music industry, Umphrey's McGee has proven adaptive and inventive both in music and in business.  Through grassroots promotions, an intensive touring schedule, open taping policies and music sharing among fans, Umphrey's McGee provides a new approach to media, entertainment, and music distribution.  Tape trading in the jam-band scene was one of the earliest examples of free music distribution and Umphrey's has harnessed the internet's momentum to spread their music far and wide.  With an extensive variety of downloadable formats, UMlive.net offers more music than any other indie label with download stores, and Umphrey's McGee basically gives away the equivalent of 40,000 CDs each month through their podcast program.  The band has also been releasing soundboard recordings at the end of each night's concert for immediate sale since 2001 and typically sells anywhere from 120 to 180 CD-Rs per night.  Their unique approach to online and digital distribution, paired with word of mouth buzz, has helped Umphrey's McGee sell out shows nationwide while keeping their fans their top priority.

As Umphrey's McGee's sound continues to evolve, each live performance is increasingly a showcase for their "Jimmy Stewart" approach to progressive improvisation, which they utilize as a breeding ground for new material. Fan favorites "In the Kitchen", "Intentions Clear", "Bridgeless", and many more have come from such sessions.  In fact, the newest original to the Umphrey's McGee live repertoire is "Waist Down", a song with firm roots in the Jimmy Stewart 2007track “Eat - 2.17.07 - San Francisco".

Umphrey's is a band always on the cusp of fresh technology and music distribution, and the trendsetting Umphrey's McGee Podcast serves up two 75-minute sets of live UM each month to its 20,000 subscribers. On June 10th, the Podcast offered it's 66th broadcast, a Jimmy Stewart 2007 companion piece of an extra CD's worth of material from the cutting room.  That past weekend weekend, a limited pressing of 2,000 Jimmy Stewart 2007 CDs were available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, with remaining copies to be distributed at shows and though the band's online store.  Beginning June 17, the record is available digitally via iTunes and UMLive.net.

Also this month, Umphrey's McGee debut a digital-only live series called CompendiUM.  The first ten releases in this iTunes series are comprised of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007, showcasing the incredibly diverse range of the Umphrey's McGee live experience.

Umphrey's McGee

The ascension continues for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee, not only in terms of their commercial success but in creative accomplishment and instrumental achievement as well.  Their performance on their most recent release,  Live at the Murat (SCI Fidelity), is as impressive as anything they've recorded to date, with the power and finesse, the yin and the yang, that have come to characterize their by-now classic material.   Live at the Murat is only the latest feather in the cap of the dazzling sextet.   They followed their highly touted spring 2006 studio release Safety In Numbers with the magical odds and sods The Bottom Half in the spring of 2007.   The album, with its outtakes, alternate versions, and other nifty bits, reached #26 on Billboard's coveted "Heatseakers" Chart and received high marks from the music press.   HARP magazine recently noted "...[The Bottom Half delivers] creamy studio work infused by diabolical skill."   Umphrey's McGee has sold out shows in theaters coast to coast, performed coveted slots at such festivals as Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, and appeared on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live."  Booked by the Monterey Peninsula Booking Agency, the band recently sold out three nights at Chicago 's Aragon Ballroom, two nights at the Nokia Theatre, three nights at San Francisco 's Fillmore Auditorium, and the list goes on, as does Umphrey's McGee.

STS9

Dubbed "...one of the country's most intriguing, innovative outfits around" by XLR8R Magazine, STS9 steps out this summer armed with their brand-new, highly anticipated studio album, peaceblaster. To be released in summer 2008 on their own label 1320 Records, the new album will feature never-before heard tracks that artfully mirror the intensity of STS9's live shows, while preserving the musical intricacies of past studio albums that critics and fans have touted.  peaceblaster comes nearly three years after their acclaimed 2005 releases, Artifact & Artifact: Perspectives, both of which were named in iTunes list of top albums of the year.   After a flurry of industry attention, STS9 retreated from the limelight to do what they love most:  play music. On the touring front, STS9 reached number 29 on Pollstar Magazine's "PULSE Charts" of the country's top touring artists. The band has shared the stage with a diverse range of acts including Jurassic 5, Tortoise, Digable Planets, RJD2, De La Soul, The Brazilian Girls, Prefuse 73, John Butler Trio, Blackalicious, G. Love & Special Sauce, Saul Williams, Soulive, Cut Chemist, Xavier Rudd and many others, and has played such festivals as Austin City Limits Festival, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Winter Music Conference, and Vegoose Festival.  Recently, the band sold out a 4 night headlining run at Atlanta's Tabernacle, and a 2 night run at Denver's Fillmore Auditorium.

Umphrey's New Release Hits Streets Today

The ascension continues for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee, not only in terms of their commercial success but in creative accomplishment and instrumental achievement as well.  Their performance on Live at the Murat (SCI Fidelity), their first official live release, is as impressive as anything they've recorded to date, with the power and finesse, the yin and the yang, that have come to characterize their by-now classic material.

Recorded in Indianapolis in April 2007 and produced by longtime "sound caresser" / honorary seventh member Kevin Browning, the two-disc set features fan favorites like "Push the Pig," "The Triple Wide," "In the Kitchen," and "Nothing Too Fancy" along with rare tunes like the set-ending "Padgett's Profile" and the brief but torrid "Angular Momentum," centered on the combo of drummer Kris Myers and guitarist Jake Cinninger.  The band also dusts off tunes like "Hajimemashite" from '98s Songs for Older Women, and the Yes meets Little Feat-influenced "40's Theme," a live favorite for the band and its fans.

Throughout the show, UM's invention brings the progressive instrumental chops of Zappa and the stylistic savvy of Steely Dan.  It is innovative without being indulgent, exhilarating without losing control, and there are plenty of improv passages that keep the band and their fans off-balance.  Clearly, logging 120 gigs a year, "live" is where UM lives.

Live at the Murat is the latest feather in the cap of the dazzling sextet.  They followed their highly touted spring 2006 studio release Safety In Numbers with the magical odds and sods The Bottom Half in the spring of this year.  The album, with its outtakes, alternate versions, and other nifty bits, reached #26 on Billboard's coveted "Heatseakers" Chart and received high marks from the music press.  HARP magazine recently noted "…[The Bottom Half delivers] creamy studio work infused by diabolical skill."  Also in 2006, Umphrey's McGee sold out shows in theaters coast to coast, appeared at Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, and made their late night TV debut on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live."  Booked by the Monterey Peninsula Booking Agency, the band recently sold out three nights at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, two nights at Irving Plaza, San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, and the list goes on, as does Umphrey's McGee.

Umphrey's McGee recently released The Bottom Half – a spontaneous and intriguing follow-up to their highly touted spring 2006 studio release Safety In NumbersThe Bottom Half includes two discs: disc one features ten songs that did not make it onto Safety In Numbers, while disc two offers outtakes, alternative versions of songs, a cappella recordings, and other bits from the band's 2005 studio sessions.  The album, which recently reached #26 on Billboard 's coveted "Heatseakers" Chart, is receiving highmarks;  HARP Magazine recently reviewed " …[The Bottom Half delivers] creamy studio work infused by diabolical skill."

Now, on the heels of a very special home-town Green Apple Festival performance to an over-flowing crowd of almost 15,000 at the Lincoln Park Zoo, and a National Anthem appearance at U.S. Cellular Field for the Chicago White Sox's home opener, Umphrey's McGee hits the road in support of The Bottom Half.

Umphrey's McGee's growing success has not gone unnoticed.  The band's virtuoso playing and edgy songcraft compelled Rolling Stone to choose them as "a band to watch" in their annual Hot Issue, and recently prompted Guitar Player Magazine to include the band's guitarists – Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss – on their list of "Best Unsung Guitar Heroes."  Umphrey's McGee, who's headlining shows consistently sell-out from coast to coast, boasts appearances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, and many others.
