Blue Turtle Seduction Releases 13 Floors for Valentine's

photo courtesy of Tsunami Publicity- for the Grateful Web

The fresh musical movement known as Blue Turtle Seduction is a two-fold sonic experience. Both musically and socially aware, the five-piece rock / bluegrass / reggae / hip-hop hybrid creates music that defies classification. Embodying the essence of South Lake Tahoe, CA, Blue Turtle Seduction captures the upbeat, party vibe and jovial ambiance of their hometown. On the strength of their latest release, 13 Floors, BTS is proving themselves to be a mainstay on the musical circuit for years to come.

Featuring Jay Seals (guitar, vocals), Glenn Stewart (harmonica, pan flute, vocals), Christian Zupancic (violin, mandolin, vocals), Stephen Seals (bass), and Adam Navone (drums), the quintet crossed paths while working at a conference resort in the Tahoe Desolation Wilderness Area. The five distinctly unique individuals comprise the Blue Turtle Seduction sound, integrating their worldly flair with their love of all things music. From classical to rock, their refined and dynamic sound has been capturing audiences on a nightly basis.

13 Floors is loaded with trademark Blue Turtle Seduction. Capturing the diversity of the band in fluid stages, the latest release showcases music with purpose. The lyrics and melodies are infused with revelry and the harmonies encourage whole-hearted sing-a-longs. Melodic guitar leads complement the layers of strings and woodwind textures. The rhythm section is groovy and as tight as a snare drum, inevitably leading to a full-fledged dance party. "With each track, the elevator shifts to the side, up, or down, into a slightly different style. But it's all woven together within the Blue Turtle Seduction building; unmistakably us, and an authentic representation of our California blend," says Zupancic. Blue Turtle Seduction's musicianship is second to none and shines through the interplay between the five multi-talented instrumentalists.

In addition to their musical contributions, Blue Turtle Seduction is also involved in several environmental and social organizations as well. Known for their involvement and contributions to many non-profit organizations, BTS is committed to making a difference on all levels. Their tour bus has been converted to run on straight vegetable oil and the 13 Floors release is packaged in all sustainable and biodegradable materials, proving BTS as a leader amongst environmentally conscious artists on the road today.

Already making waves, Blue Turtle Seduction has gigantic plans for 2009. Committed to promoting 13 Floors and bringing the BTS vibe to the masses, the hard-working group has plans to hit western states like California, Utah, Nevada and Colorado, and also making their way to Midwestern and Southern regions from Ohio to Oklahoma. Audiences have been magnetized by the BTS sound and their high-energy live performances. Through high-energy entertainment combined with activism and outreach, BTS is music for not only the socially aware but for those looking for a positively great time.

Umphrey's McGee Releases Mantis Tuesday, Jan. 20th

Chicago's Umphrey's McGee enters its second decade together with their hardest, darkest, and most artistically cohesive album to date. The new album hits streets on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009, when Mantis casts another Windy City family into the limelight.

The first single from Mantis, "Measure to Measure," has already debuted at #1 on the R&R Indicator Top 30 chart (tied with "Lucky" - Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat duet). Billboard Magazine recently recognized Umphrey's McGee's "digital savvy," hailing Mantis' innovative pre-order campaign, where fans unlock bonus content as the number of Mantis pre-orders increase, as "...a likely template for emerging and established acts [looking to] kick-start interest in a new release."

Over 2 years in the making, Mantis pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement and group interplay.  In an Umphrey's McGee first, the album offers 100% new material - a drastic change of pace for a band whose typical modus operandi is to work out the material live on-stage before recording studio versions.

Bassnectar Releases New Single, 'Heads Up'

photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Bassnectar is back with his first proper musical offering since 2007's Underground Communication. "Heads Up" - the first single/ep from his forthcoming full length album The Other Side - available now at www.beatport.com, www.junodownload.com  and other major digital sites.

It's bombs-away-business-as-usual with this uber tear-out title track: a freakshow mix of sledgehammer dubstep, 2 step, and bass psychosis. The single features an alternative mix (California Style) of 90 beats per minute double time throb-hop that drops on your head like a John Candy body slam, as well as a third remix [West Coast Lo Fi Remix]" - a dripping melodic sound game by the upstart Bassnectar side project West Coast Lo Fi. Also included to knock this sucker out of the park, the Bassnectar remix of 'Roustabout' by Beats Antique...a twisted carnival circus anthem with - you guessed it - plenty of wobbling bass.

The David Leonhardt Trio CD Releases 'Explorations'

David Leonhardt Trio- for the Grateful Web

Pianist David Leonhardt and his respective band-mates have performed and recorded with some of the finest jazz musicians in the business, and it's no wonder that they would be called upon by numerous jazz artists after listening to this polished and nicely-flowing trio set, where Leonhardt steers the unit through standards and pop/rock favorites.

An all star trio's exciting new eclectic collection of jazzed up arrangements showcasing their improvisational abilities in a creative journey set to songs by James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Elton John, George Harrison as well as Horace Silver, and Jerome Kern.

The musicians generate dynamics while tempering the various currents when required.  For example, on the pianist's comp "Whispers of Contentment – Shouts of Joy," the trio renders gradually ascending choruses, abetted by Leonhardt's powerful block chords and drummer Alvester Garnett's display of rhythmic ferocity.  Yet, melody is a key ingredient throughout, as the band tackles George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and Elton John's "Your Song," with panache, and a jazzy vibe.

On James Taylor's "Fire and Rain," Leonhardt injects jazz fills and a loose-groove motif amid lyrically resplendent phrasings, while the band also explores via an improvisational approach.  However, the musicians do find time to up the ante with bluesy moments and heated workouts.  In addition, Leonhardt looms as a vivid storyteller here and alters the overall tone of the album with his North African modal piece "The Dawn Over Morocco." Ultimately, it's a superfine effort that is topped off with an irrefutably appealing track mix and all executed with a melding of eloquence and passion. by Glenn Astarita JazzReview.com

David Leonhardt has always been a jazz pianist first, while enamored with the realm of contemporary popular songs. This duality is reflected in this set of standards, originals, and rearrangements of well known hit tunes. While one wonders if there is a real need to do numbers out of the repertoire of The Beatles, Elton John, Cream and James Taylor, Leonhardt and his trio do them with a modified flair and at times thoughtful repast. The extraordinary bassist Matthew Parrish and hot drummer Alvester Garnett help Leonhardt greatly in lifting all of these tracks to a higher interpretive level. The originals of the pianist are, to say the least, interesting. "Whispers Of Contentment - Shouts Of Joy" is a definitive spirit song, lovely in its Zen like invention. "The Dawn Over Morocco" sports impending heavy dramatic modality leading to a brighter day, the title track is a free bop true to its title, and "Winter Waltz" a quicker ice skating number reminiscent of a Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown tune. "Late Night Blues" is pretty straight laced, and "Iberian Lament" organic, pretty and pensive. The trio does a splendid sprinting version of the Jerome Kern standard "Yesterdays" moving quickly from sideline to sideline, and a gorgeous, near perfect interpretation of Horace Silver's "Peace." Then there's the block chords and light Brazilian take of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," a waltz to 4/4 saccharine "Your Song," hard bopping and scattershot but barely recognizable "Sunshine Of Your Love," and off melody phrases but otherwise true to form "Fire & Rain." As honest, balanced and flexible a musician as there is in jazz, Leonhardt and this truly excellent trio needs to be heard by a general populist mainstream audience, and likely stretch these tracks out in more intimate live performances. - by Michael G. Nastos AllMusic.com

David Leonhardt Trio - EXPLORATIONS: Simply superb piano from David, bassist Matthew Parrish and crisp/clear drums by Alvester Garnett on this gem of a CD.  There are several originals; all packed with talent that shines from all 3 players, but in this case, the most notable tracks are David's arrangements of tunes like George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", & Clapton's "Sunshine Of Your Love"!  He breathes new life into those tracks & elevates them back into their proper place... far above Muzak, & in the Universal realm... I can tell you without qualification that you've NEVER heard interpretations as spirited as these!  The recording is excellent; you're able to hear every little nuance, especially on tunes like the opener, "Whispers of Contentment - Shouts of Joy", definitely my favorite on the album; though in semi-ballad mode, power emanates between Leonhardt's phrasings here!  A great jazz album with a new approach to standards that merits our MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - by Rotcod Zzaj

STS9 Releases 'Peaceblaster,' July 8th, 2008

photos by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Dubbed "...one of the country's most intriguing, innovative outfits around" by XLR8R Magazine, STS9 steps out this summer armed with their brand-new, highly anticipated studio album, Peaceblaster. STS9 releases their fourth studio album Peaceblaster, available online and at independent retailers beginning July 8th, 2008 on their self-owned record label, 1320 Records (visit www.thinkindie.com) to find a store near you). The new album features never-before heard tracks that artfully mirror the intensity of STS9's live shows, while preserving the musical intricacies of past studio albums that critics and fans have touted.

Consider the title of the California-based outfit's long-awaited fourth album: Peaceblaster. The two words rub against each other to create an image that is simultaneously utopian and violent, fraught with the very contradiction that permeates America circa now. The result is a tour-de-force of gut-punching rhythms and textured, shimmering tones. The songs don't seem to have been written so much as plucked from the sky. It's as if the beats and melodies have always existed, just waiting for STS9 to channel them.  STS9 already has a tremendous fan base, but Peaceblaster is perhaps more accessible than the band's previous efforts. Peaceblaster is, of course, dense with the Eno-esque layering of live and electronic instruments that STS9 is known for-the chords and samples swirling atop the pulsing bass and drums. But between the beats there is a distinctly human element absent from past records.

With Peaceblaster, the band has honed their studio chops, but STS9 made their bones on the live stage. Consistently ranking in Pollstar's Top 50 American touring acts, the torrid roadwork continues this summer with an itinerary that takes the band from headlining gigs at legendary venues like Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Berkeley's Greek Theatre, to stops on the festival circuit, where they'll join acts as diverse as Snoop Dogg and The Flaming Lips. This diversity works to shatter the boundaries of genre and scene.

For the month of July, touring heavyweights STS9 and Umphrey's McGee team up for what promises to be one of the hardest-hitting tours of the summer. This co-bill will feature extended sets by both bands, and will stop in Midwest and east coast cities throughout the month of July.  Look, also, for very special late night sets by each band in select markets, including Philadelphia, Raleigh, Madison, Chicago, and NYC. A complete list of STS9's U.S. summer appearances follows.

STS9's Peaceblaster comes nearly three years after their acclaimed 2005 releases, Artifact & Artifact: Perspectives, both of which were named in iTunes list of top albums of the year.  After a flurry of industry attention, STS9 retreated from the limelight to do what they love most:  play music. On the touring front, STS9 reached number 29 on Pollstar Magazine's "PULSE Charts" of the country's top touring artists. The band has shared the stage with a diverse range of acts including James Brown, Jurassic 5, Tortoise, Digable Planets, RJD2, De La Soul, The Brazilian Girls, Prefuse 73, Blackalicious, Saul Williams, Soulive, Cut Chemist, and many others, and has played such festivals as Austin City Limits Festival, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Winter Music Conference, and Vegoose Festival.  Recently, the band sold out a 4 night headlining run at Atlanta's Tabernacle, and a 2 night run at Denver's Fillmore Auditorium.

As Umphrey's McGee's sound continues to evolve, each live performance is increasingly a showcase for their "Jimmy Stewart" approach to progressive improvisation, which they utilize as a breeding ground for new material. Fan favorites "In the Kitchen", "Intentions Clear", "Bridgeless", and many more have come from such sessions.  In fact, the newest original to the Umphrey's McGee live repertoire is "Waist Down", a song with firm roots in the Jimmy Stewart 2007track “Eat - 2.17.07 - San Francisco".

Umphrey's is a band always on the cusp of fresh technology and music distribution, and the trendsetting Umphrey's McGee Podcast serves up two 75-minute sets of live UM each month to its 20,000 subscribers. On June 10th, the Podcast offered it's 66th broadcast, a Jimmy Stewart 2007 companion piece of an extra CD's worth of material from the cutting room.  That past weekend weekend, a limited pressing of 2,000 Jimmy Stewart 2007 CDs were available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, with remaining copies to be distributed at shows and though the band's online store.  Beginning June 17, the record is available digitally via iTunes and UMLive.net.

Also this month, Umphrey's McGee debut a digital-only live series called CompendiUM.  The first ten releases in this iTunes series are comprised of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007, showcasing the incredibly diverse range of the Umphrey's McGee live experience.

Zach Deputy Releases Debut Studio Album

Zach Deputy- for the Grateful Web

Out Of The Water (Deputy Records, 2008), Zach Deputy's much anticipated studio album, will be released on June 24th. After years of selling and giving away thousands live recordings, Zach Deputy and his musical partner Paul Kearns are excited to share this studio recording with fans. "At times it seemed like it would never come out," said Zach Deputy. "I was touring non-stop and couldn't find more than a day in a row to record in Atlanta." This album represents one of the many musical facets of Zach Deputy. Fans know that Zach and Paul perform as a duo, with Zach creating next generation live looping, accompanied by Kearns on percussion, to create a full band sound. Out Of The Water, on the other hand, features a full complement of some of the South's top musicians, including Mose Davis on Hammond B-3 organ (The Isley Brothers, Funkadelic, David Ruffin, etc.), bassist Sam Sims (Maxwell, Michael Jackson, kd Lang, etc.) and drummer Sonny Emory (Earth Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, B-52s, etc.). Despite the accomplished sidemen available to him, Zach Deputy still plays all of the instruments on some tracks, and is credited with vocals, acoustic, electric, slide and treated guitars, bass, keyboards, synths, drums, percussion and marimba on the recording, in addition to writing all of the words and music. He also lent a hand in the production, from engineering to mixing, and is the co-producer of the album.

Moving seamlessly from sultry R&B to soulful funk to love ballads, Out Of The Water offers 12 tracks that capture Zach Deputy's diverse musical and cultural influences. A South Carolina native, Deputy's family tree has Puerto Rican and Cruzan roots. Thus, the tropical sounds of Calypso and dancehall rhythms coexist happily with hip hop and rock beats, all forming a foundation for the dexterous guitar work and multiple octave vocal stylings of this talented young artist. Often at a loss for describing his own music, Zach Deputy addresses his influences in his comical way: "I was inspired by Bobby McFerrin and James Brown, but blown away by Ray Charles. I like to think of my music as the illegitimate bastard child of these three greats, raised by Michael Jackson in a beachside shack on St. Croix." Unheard in these references is Deputy's love of old school conscious hip hop, but this can be found live and on the record, as Zach can flow with the best of them, improvising smooth lyrical gymnastics as easily as he jams on his instrument.

Out Of The Water will be available online at iTunes, Rhapsody, eMusic, Napster, GrooveMobile and Groupy Tunes in time for the official release date. Out Of The Water will also be available at select retailers through the Homegrown Music Network's (HGMN) distribution service. Of course, the best place to buy it is at a show. Zach Deputy will be touring non-stop in support of the new release, from the Mississippi to the Atlantic, Miami to Minneapolis to Montreal and all stops in between. Pre-orders are available through zachdeputy.com, cdfreedom.com and homegrownmusic.net. For more info., a complete tour schedule and much more, visit www.zachdeputy.com.

STS9 Digitally Releases 'Shock Doctrine'

photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

This spring STS9 holed-up in their California studio space recording their much anticipated fourth album, Peaceblaster.  The album is scheduled to be released some time early this summer.  But this past week, Thursday, May 22nd, STS9 digitally released the recently recorded single "Shock Doctrine," offering a rare glimpse into STS9's new material.

"Shock Doctrine" can be downloaded for free or streamed at www.1320records.com.  It may also be downloaded as part of a podcast on iTunes www.itunes.com.  On this first-ever 1320 podcast, "Shock Doctrine" debuts as the podcasts' first track, which also features new singles from artists off the bands' self-owned label, 1320 Records, including Count Bass D, Pnuma Trio, Collective Efforts, sub-ID, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, and LoPro Lounge.

Look for STS9 on tour in the coming months.  For July, touring heavyweights STS9 and Umphrey's McGee team up for what promises to be one of the hardest-hitting tours of the summer. This co-bill will feature extended sets by both bands, and will stop in Midwest and east coast cities throughout the month of July.  The tour will also offer very special late night sets by each band in select markets, including Philadelphia, Madison, Chicago, NYC, and Atlanta.

The month of August includes headlining stops in Berkeley, CA, Portland, OR and Seattle, WA for STS9, before the summer culminates with two huge shows at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre.  Their western itinerary also offers two intimate, always popular and already sold out "Fan Club" shows in San Francisco, CA and Boulder, CO.  All shows on-sale now at TicketMaster.

Dubbed "...one of the country's most intriguing, innovative outfits around" by XLR8R Magazine, STS9 steps out this summer armed with their brand-new, highly anticipated studio album, Peaceblaster.  To be released in summer 2008 on their own label 1320 Records (www.1320records.com), the new album will feature never-before heard tracks that artfully mirror the intensity of STS9's live shows, while preserving the musical intricacies of past studio albums that critics and fans have touted. Peaceblaster  comes nearly three years after their acclaimed 2005 releases, Artifact & Artifact: Perspectives, both of which were named in iTunes list of top albums of the year.

Haale Releases New Album, 'No Ceiling'

photo courtesy of Madison House- for the Grateful Web

Haale (as in halle-lujah, or jale-peno), is a downtown New Yorker of Iranian descent.  On her breathtaking full-length debut, No Ceiling, she draws on that heritage freely, but filters it through a contemporary prism. That is, she extracts the Persian influence of her bloodline - including the work of the mystical poet Rumi - and the Sufi trance tradition, while weaving in her fondness for Hendrix, Dylan, Radiohead, and psychedelia. No Ceiling synthesizes the diverse elements of Haale's personality into a single, impressive approach. Haale sounds pretty much like who she is.  The ten songs on No Ceiling encompass a musical journey in the truest sense, while Haale's substance and versatility stand in stark contrast to today's fashion-show mainstream pop. With the release of No Ceiling, at a time when so many bands sound painfully alike and imitative, Haale offers a much needed voice.  No Ceiling was released on March 19th on Channel A Music.

Critics are already taking notice, hailing No Ceiling as "...a BIG album" and" not something to be tossed into the New Age/International bins."

"In every song she creates, Haale makes it difficult to discern where tradition ends and modernity begins - the indelible mark of truly progressive artistry." -Global Rhythm

"Haale exemplifies the meaning of world music in her songs, combining a pretty potpourri of sounds from disparate elements to create a mystically poetic stew grounded by the complex rock rhythms of her bandmates." - Remix

Made in partnership with percussionist/producer Matt Kilmer, and a number of NYC musicians, No Ceiling is a group effort. Haale and company have earned a secure place in the downtown scene while also generating opportunities for more mainstream exposure. She released two mesmerizing EPs in 2007 - Morning and Paratrooper. Haale has recorded with Sean Lennon (on 'Before the Skies'), has been presented by David Byrne, and has worked with producer Dougie Bowne (Cibo Matto, Chris Whitley, Cassandra Wilson). She has dazzled audiences at SXSW, Bonnaroo, the Mimi Festival in France, and shared the stage with Frank London of the Klezmatics as well as the legendary Hugh Masakela and Odetta on the Songs of Spirit tour.
