Sugar Hill Records Releases Wood and Stone from Tara Nevins

American roots traditionalist Tara Nevins releases an exploration of her own heritage, musical and otherwise, in Wood and Stone, her first solo album since Mule to Ride in 1999.  Wood and Stone showcases her ever-evolving repertoire as she journeys both back to her own “roots” and head-long into new territory.

Fans of Nevins from her 21-year tenure with Donna the Buffalo are familiar with her versatile talents; she shares the vocal and songwriting responsibilities for the band and is a stellar musician on fiddle, guitar, and accordion.  (She plays a mean scrubboard too.) Prior to DTB, Nevins was a founding member of the all-female, old time/Cajun band The Heartbeats. (They join her on two tracks here as well.) Wood and Stone delivers the musical expertise fans have come to expect and surprises with new perspectives.

“This album is personal and sort of revelatory,” Nevins says.  “It’s an expression of recent emotional discovery within relationships lost and found, and how knowing the core of who we are is the real deal. There were so many elements I wanted to explore—to combine all the pieces of my personal musical puzzle--and then have it come together in a cohesive whole. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Larry Campbell.  I am honored to have had him both produce and play on my record.  He's an amazingly talented and soulful musician.  He has a very natural, down-to-earth approach and an instinctual insightfulness that I really appreciate; he really got what I was after. The whole experience was inspiring and challenging in a very positive way.”

Campbell is a much-sought-after musician/producer renowned for his work with Bob Dylan and still rolling from the success of Levon Helm’s two Grammy- winners, Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt, which he produced.  He found Nevins’s project immediately compelling.  “I liked the feel of the project-- her combination of old-time mountain music and original songwriting—and I was taken with Tara’s unique talent; she’s got a distinctive voice—there’s a kind of honesty that shines through.”
Ten of the thirteen tracks are originals, and Nevins’s complexity gets a broad stage. She dispenses wit and wisdom with an atypical take on love and relationships through gritty songs such as “You’ve Got It All” and “You’re Still Driving That Truck,” then turns to wrenching hearts with songs like “Snowbird” (accompanied by Jim Lauderdale), a beautiful metaphorical ballad about the pain of loving someone unable to truly give back, and “Tennessee River,” a haunting, gripping song about the stranglehold love can have over a person’s whole existence.  “Stars Fell on Alabama” sounds like it fell from her heart and pen too, but Nevins has the capacity to take a well-known standard like this, change the melody, and perform it so ingenuously that it fits in seamlessly to the whole groove of the record.
The record kicks off with the title cut “Wood and Stone,” and that “honest” element is readily apparent in this touching tribute to home and family. Old-timey acoustics are quickly joined by drums and steel guitars as Nevins sings about “the better part of me” regarding her upbringing and early influences.  “It’s got that magical blend of music and lyrics,” Campbell says of it, “and it really paints a picture of where she comes from.”
The record is “framed” by another nostalgic piece, “The Beauty of the Days Gone By” (by Van Morrison), bringing the record full-circle and serving as a sort of catharsis for the dark tone of “Tennessee River”.  “I wanted to end the record with it,” Nevins explains, “because I love the sentiment of the song and it’s kind of like ‘the sun always comes back out’ kind of thing. We grow and learn and take our relationships with us for better and for worse and that’s life in all its beauty and glory.”

Nevins’s rare blend of enormous talent coupled with genuine down-home humbleness has won the hearts of fans and colleagues alike.  “Tara has this worldly awareness combined with a fragile innocence,” Larry Campbell notes, “which makes her songwriting and music very accessible…very appealing.”  Wood and Stone is sure to add to that appeal.

Spring into Sound at Kimock's NYC Residency

Fresh off a sold-out run in California, Steve Kimock kicks off his NYC residency at Sullivan Hall this Wednesday, March 23rd. The weekly Wednesday performance runs through April 6th and features an array of special guest performers such as New Orleans legend Henry Butler, Marco Benevento, Adam Deitch, John Molo, Pete Sears, John Morgan Kimock, with other special and surprise guests. Regarded as a true "musician's musician," Kimock has been coined, "an unknown legend" in a recent CNN piece, and a master of his craft, it's no wonder that Jerry Garcia dubbed him one of his favorite unknown guitar players.

Kimock has gone out of his way to maintain an authentic relationship with his instrument and his sound. Many focus on music specifically, not dealing with sound as the main component. For Kimock, the sound is the reason that he plays and the music is the vessel. With excitingly stunning guitar explorations coupled with melodic mastery and remarkable improvisation, Kimock's distinctive ability to elevate sonically, creates indescribable moments of transcendence for his loyal audiences.

Blending genres from rock, jazz, blues, to middle-eastern and almost everything in between, Kimock has played with some "main" bands over the years, most notably Zero, KVHW, the Other Ones, and was part of the legendary Phil & Friends lineup in '99, a few incarnations of The Steve Kimock Band and most recently the electronica outfit PRAANG. With his keen ability to step onto any stage at any time, and constantly raise the bar with all sorts of bands through a wide-range of genres, Kimock's guitar playing is the stuff of legends.

Blair Announces Feb/Mar Tour With Say Hi

Brooklyn-based artist Blair has announced new tour dates in support of Say Hi this February and March. The lengthy jaunt will launch February 18th at Neurolux in Boise, ID and wrap up March 30th at The Media Club in Vancouver, BC. The tour includes a hometown show on March 7th at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, as well as two dates during this year's SXSW festival. Blair's debut full-length Die Young was released early last year by Autumn Tone Records.

Die Young is a winsome mix of dreamy, hazy indie pop influenced by Blair's love for '90s FM radio (think Beck and Nirvana) and the records spun on her mother's turntable (like Bob Dylan and Neil Young) while growing up in New Orleans, LA. The album was written - in both her hometown and Los Angeles, CA - and re-recorded over the course of five years. The songs were finally laid to tape in New Orleans using both traditional studios and makeshift home setups, with the help of producer Keith Ferguson and a host of musician friends filling out the parts.

As her airy vocals tell stories of heartache, daydreams and memories, throughout the album Blair shows herself to be a nimble musician and songwriter with an innate sense of sumptuous melody. Whether the angular guitar pop of opener "Rampage," the sweetly yearning "Hearts" (listen/download here), the sprightly whimsy of "Hello Halo," the '60s girl-group swing of "Paris France," or the soaring, lush "Wolfboy" (listen/download here), it's easy to understand why PasteMagazine.com gave her its 'Best Of What's Next' label and why Muzzle Of Bees declared Die Young "...a pop album for this generation...one of the year's most promising surprises."

David Bromberg Quartet @ Boulder Theater

Often referred to as a musician's musician throughout his career, David Bromberg has spent almost as much time being a sideman to people like Bob Dylan and Jerry Jeff Walker as he has fronting his own band. Session credits for albums by Tom Paxton and Jerry Jeff Walker started getting Bromberg attention in the mid-'60s, and he began making the transition from sideman to frontman in the early '70s, when he was signed to record for Columbia Records.

The key to appreciating Bromberg is to realize he has an equal passion for blues, folk, country and western, bluegrass, and rock & roll. This diverse range of influences is reflected on all his recordings for Columbia, Fantasy, and Rounder, and in his performances as well. His musical eclecticism over the years may have cost him some fans, but a typical Bromberg concert can be a musical education. Bromberg disappeared in the early '90s to become a full-time violin maker, but returned in 2007 with Try Me One More Time, an all-new, all-acoustic solo set of blues and folk tunes.

30 years ago, Kyle Hollingsworth set out on a career in music. Since then, with a wealth of desire and incredible ability, Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those who’ve seen SCI know the band can move from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. “In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, we’re not afraid to move in and out of genres,” he says, “and because of that I’ve learned to be creative, not only on stage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to.”

His recent release, Then There’s Now, finds the musician coming in to his own. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his mark in the new, always-evolving music scene. Then There’s Now delivers a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes and seamlessly displays his growth as a musician and as a songwriter.

Rex Foundation Grant for San Francisco's Jerry Day

The Rex Foundation is pleased to announce a special grant to support Jerry Day in San Francisco. Jerry Day is a civic and cultural event that celebrates San Francisco native son - Jerry Garcia. The free event captures the true spirit of Jerry Garcia and celebrates his legacy at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, recognizing his childhood Excelsior District roots.


Jerry Day is held annually near Jerry's birthday, August 1. The 2010 event is Sunday, August 1. Jerry Garcia Amphitheater is in the Excelsior District at McLaren Park in the City and County of San Francisco. The outdoor amphitheater was renamed Jerry Garcia Amphitheater after the musician's death in 1995. Jerry Garcia was a force within the Grateful Dead for thirty years. He was a unique musician spawned from the bluegrass jug band era following San Francisco's Beat Generation. He and Grateful Dead band mates and a plethora of fellow musicians explored musical themes and genres well beyond the psychedelic splendor of the Summer of Love.

Rex Foundation acknowledges the wonderful work of the Jerry Day committee and its association with the San Francisco Parks Trust. The Jerry Day Celebration commemorates and invigorates the community that continues to grow because the music Jerry created remains vital. Many people only see each other at these types of events where the music is the glue that binds and creates the common shared experience. Jerry's following was enormous and included other bands and collaborations in addition to the Grateful Dead. Jerry may be gone, but we're not. His spirit is alive and replays through events like Jerry Day. The Rex Foundation board of directors is delighted to assist this worthy endeavor.

WILLIAM MYLAR...Singer, Songwriter, & Musician

William Mylar is a singer, songwriter, and musician, currently living in Galt, CA.  Mylar has played music nearly all of his life, beginning with piano at age 7. He acquired vocal training while working as a child actor in professional and community theatrical productions. Mylar taught himself guitar at age 18 and, along with his booming singing voice, the guitar became his primary instrument.

Mylar invented Folk Wave music to describe his unique approach to performing his original music. Folk Wave was unusual in the late 70s and early 80s, because solo Mylar performances were more like rock and roll shows instead of the typical entertainment provided by folk artists of the time. Mylar often performed 4 to 5 hour solo shows that included leaping on tables and chairs. It was not uncommon to see people get up and dance. His legendary performances and pioneering approach to Folk music has been copied by many other folk artists.

Mylar also played in a number of rock bands in the 80s and 90s, mostly as a rhythm guitarist and lead singer. He has performed all over the world and has recorded on a number of albums, radio, and television. "I Like It That Way", One World, One People", and "Randy's Fence" have all been aired on radio around the world. "Don't Ever Go" and "Sweet Alibi" became two of the first mp3s to be featured on MP3.com.

Mylar's first album, Folk Wave Music, was acclaimed for both the muscial compositions and also the way the album was recorded, using a simple one track technique and engineered acoustics. His second solo album, Real Mylar, was rated #17 in the top 25 Folk albums in America. His new album, Listen, was recorded with some of the Sacramento area's finest musicians and arranged to propel Mylar's music into the pop and rock genres.
