The Disco Biscuits Release Latest Studio Album – Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens

Released exclusively at Camp Bisco as the gates opened on Thursday, the Disco Biscuits' latest studio album - Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens - features the studio incarnations of many of the group's live show fan favorites in addition to some of the band's latest material.

Advance copies of Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens were sold to eager fans as they waited in line to enter the sold out Camp Bisco X. Copies were available throughout the weekend at the festival merch tent and at meet and greets with the band members. The band’s annual, 3-day, namesake festival saw a maximum capacity crowd of 25,000 on hand to witness the surprise release, which served to commemorate 10 years of Camp Bisco.

Fresh off of a high-energy tour in the fall of 2010, The Disco Biscuits recorded Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens in short order at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA with Grammy Award-winning producer Phil Nicolo, whose credits include projects with Billy Joel, Yoko Ono, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith and Dave Grohl. In contrast to the 3-year Planet Anthem album process, the band committed to finishing their latest release in just two weeks last November. The album was produced by The Disco Biscuits with additional production by Twisted Records’ Benji Vaughan.

By entering the studio on the heels of a powerhouse tour, the Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens album sessions were a return to The Disco Biscuits’ live roots. The result is an album that feels as eclectic and energetic as one of the band’s signature live shows. The tracklist – which is a collection of the group’s live show fan favorites in addition to some of the band’s latest material – is a further testament to this concept.

The album art, including a poster insert, features “mug shots” of the band, their management, crew, friends and fans. The photos were taken by Jesse Borrell and his NoCoast.tv colleagues, who also had access to capture the experience of the album recording sessions in a documentary. Backdrops were set up at Denver’s Ogden Theatre as well as at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre to capture the photos during the 3-day Colorado run over Memorial Day weekend 2011.

Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens is now available in high quality 320 kbps mp3, flac, or Apple lossless for only $4.99, and is available for free in 128 kbps mp3 at discobiscuits.com. The album is also available on iTunes.

Rex Foundation Announces Jerry Garcia Award and Grants

The Rex Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting distinctive arts, environmental and social services programs through grassroots giving, is pleased to announce the recipient of the Jerry Garcia Award, along with other new grantees.

Arts for Humanity! is the recipient of the Rex Foundation's Jerry Garcia Award in memory of Grateful Dead guitarist and founding Rex Board member Jerry Garcia.  This award honors and supports individuals and groups that work to encourage creativity in young people. We believe the work of Arts for Humanity! (AH!) is just what the Jerry Garcia Award is about.  AH! celebrates humanity through the arts with programs that cultivate creativity and empower people with developmental disabilities, at-risk youth, the elderly and others in partnership with local artists and the Santa Barbara community. AH!'s performing and visual arts programs benefit individuals and build community by giving a voice to the underserved through the power and beauty of the arts.

We made four additional grants to grassroots non-profit organizations doing outstanding work.  In connection with the generous support of the Sacramento Kings that resulted from the February and March, 2011 Grateful Dead Tribute games, the following two local area programs received Rex grants:

  • Sacramento Blues Society Blues In The Schools (BITS) program, which gives Sacramento-area youth an opportunity to participate in a dynamic interactive musical experience with professional musicians. The Blues In The Schools program brings students together with musicians, educators, storytellers, and other performers in a synergistic environment, creating a free flowing exchange of the Blues experience and facilitating a lifelong passion for learning.
  • The Yolo County Children's Alliance, which was established in 2002 as an essential services program at Alyce Norman Center in West Sacramento to address a number of concerns that impacted children and families.  The Rex grant helps support the Children and Families' Access to Food program that provides 150 low-income families with fresh fruits and vegetables and other food items each week. This program, threatened by recent state budget cuts, not only provides essential food and nutrition education, but also enables the Alliance to reach more families with additional support services.

The two other Rex grant recipients are:

  • The Tiburon Salmon Institute (TSI), an organization that teaches school-age youth about salmon, steelhead, and the stream, river and ocean habitats that we share with them, with the overall mission to "Empower Today's Youth To Save Tomorrow's Salmon."  The Rex grant of $5,000 both supports this vital work and helped make possible a matched grant from the Belevedere Community Foundation, thereby significantly boosting the ability of TSI to advance its program.
  • The Bolinas Stinson Summer Camp provides all local West Marin children with equal access to memorable summer camp experiences. Although camp fees are kept to a third the cost of similar camps, many area families are unable to pay even part.  The Rex grant provides funding for The Music Project for the Bolinas Stinson Summer Camp to provide additional activities in the form of music education for the campers, with emphasis on building community through music, especially through the rhythms of drumming.

About the Rex Foundation:

Furthering what Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead started 27 years ago, the Rex Foundation endeavors to fund grassroots programs that are often under the radar of larger funding entities, yet work in bold, innovative ways to carry out essential work toward a healthy environment, promotion of the arts, protection of indigenous cultures, assisting others less fortunate, building strong communities, and educating children and adults.  The Rex Foundation has distributed $8.6 million in grants to over 1,000 programs across the U.S. and internationally, while also carrying out fundraising initiatives that foster creativity and positive community connections.  Visit www.rexfoundation.org for a complete list of grantees and information about current initiatives.

BROTHERS PAST ANNOUNCES SUMMER DATES

Indie-electronic act BROTHERS PAST has announced a round of summer tour dates, which includes a hometown show at the Electric Factory on Saturday, June 26. The band will also be performing at several festivals along the East Coast, including a high-profile slot at Camp Bisco.

Since returning from a one-year hiatus in early 2009, the band has spent the majority of its time working in the studio, crafting a follow-up to the 2005 release This Feeling’s Called Goodbye (SCI Fidelity Records.) “We’ve recorded a bunch of old songs and a bunch of new songs that Tommy Hamilton and I have written together.” keyboardist Tom McKee said. “All of it will eventually get released one way or another, but some of it probably won’t fit with the record. We’re definitely making progress though, and once we get it out there you’ll be seeing more of us on the road.”

Upon releasing This Feeling’s Called Goodbye, BROTHERS PAST received national attention from fans and critics alike. Morgan Wells of Urb Magazine described it as "...a glimpse into the future of pop music... Brothers Past offers a smooth and believable blend of electronica, rock and pop just original enough to place [This Feeling's Called Goodbye] at the top of a growing pile of genre-bending releases." Steven Rosen in HARP echoed the praise: "There's a future in this kind of music." The record’s catchy rock anthems, captivating arrangements and inspired lyrics received numerous "Top Ten" mentions and was nominated by the Jammy Awards for "Album of the Year." The release has established Brothers Past as innovative songwriters with a progressive vision towards future.

San Francisco's BIG LIGHT Announce Summer Tour Dates

San Francisco's Big Light will tour this summer in support of their debut album, Animals In Bloom. The dates mark the furthest the band has pushed outside their hometown in a short three year history. And with good reason. Big Light has made a timeless rock and roll record that demands to be heard beyond the Bay Area. The album's 12 tracks spill over with fuzzed-out guitars, artful lyrical observations and stirring garage pop psychedelia. Hailed as one of the most promising young rock bands in San Francisco, Big Light are now setting their sights on the rest of the country.

Forming circa 2007 as a vehicle for aspiring singer/songwriter/guitarist Fred Torphy to get his songs into the world, BIG LIGHT spent the next three years developing their sound and performing around the West Coast relentlessly. Climbing the S.F. club circuit quickly, they went from playing bar gigs like Bottom of the Hill to headlining The Independent to support slots at the legendary Fillmore sharing bills with the likes of Spoon, Broken Social Scene and Dead Confederate among others. A hit on the festival circuit as well, Big Light has previously performed at Outside Lands, Noise Pop and Wanderlust. On this upcoming tour, they're set for another run of summer festivals, including High Sierra, Summer Camp and Bobolink.

With its debut album, Animals In Bloom, Big Light has crafted a record that has enough indie pop charm to land on the radio, but is adventurous enough to engage those who are looking for more than hooks. Headphone junkies and audiophiles themselves, they've created a "listening experience" that never feels fake or dishonest. Experiencing the new album and watching the band evolve at such a rapid rate onstage, one gets the feeling that Big Light is poised to shine bright for years to come.

Upcoming BIG LIGHT tour dates are:

May 29 | Summer Camp Music Festival | Chilicothe, IL

The Disco Biscuits Unveil "On Time" Video

The Disco Biscuits have just released video for “On Time,” a breezy and infectious electro-pop anthem from their latest album, Planet Anthem. This new video, which made its debut  on MTV2 and MTU, was directed by Noah Rappaport and Ghost Town Media. It follows the sexual escapades of a skinny disco robot on a wild night on the town.Planet Anthem, which was released on March 16th, debuted at #140 on the Billboard Top 200 and #5 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart.

On the new album, The Disco Biscuits break out of the jam band-meets-electronica sound they have been known for.  This time around, they’ve opted for danceable pop and rock grooves, plus a touch of hip hop thanks to collaborating with producers Don Cheegro and Dirty Harry (Ludacris, Chris Brown, Beanie Sigel).

The Disco Biscuits also recently announced the lineup for the two annual festivals they put on.  Bisco Inferno will take place on May 29th at Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Morrison, CO.   In addiction to the Biscuits, headliners include The Glitch Mob and The Crystal Method.  Camp Bisco 9, the band’s ninth annual three-day music and arts festival, will be held in Mariaville, New York from July 15-17th. The Disco Biscuits will perform all three nights, and other headliners include LCD Soundsystem, Ween, Girl Talk, and Major Lazer. As true road warriors, The Disco Biscuits have a slew of additional dates throughout the US.

Marshall Ford Swing Band To Release Debut Album

Marshall Ford Swing Band — the “young and refreshing” Austin five-piece whose vocals, piano, guitars, bass and beat combine for a swing sound that sometimes goes country and sometimes scatters some jazz — releases its first studio album, the bright and buoyant IT’S ABOUT DAM TIME, on February 16 with CD release shows across the state.

Marshall Ford Swing Band members — Emily Ann Gimble (vocals and piano), Greg Harkins (guitar and vocals), Jeremy Wheeless (guitar), James Gwyn (drums) and Kristopher Wade (upright bass) — give it their all, onstage and now in the studio.

Word of mouth in Austin music circles and gigs in some of the city’s most popular restaurants and other venues, as well as time at the fiddle camp of legend Johnny Gimble (yes, Emily’s grandfather), have pushed the band’s evolution from its traditional country start to one embracing Western swing and its most engaging elements: retro shout vocals, twin guitar leads (by Harkins and Wheeless), an animated piano, and lyrics simple and straightforward.
Like the album, the band’s shows are full of up-tempo old-time swing tunes that band members love and love to play and country- and jazz-infused originals — all of which set toes to tapping and couples to dancing.
“This group’s tunes are reminiscent of the early days of swing music, where the bass kept the beat and the mandolin was a prominent fixture,” said the Austin American-Statesman.
Marshall Ford Swing Band upcoming shows include:
February 14, Sengelmann Hall, Schulenberg*
February 18, Dan’s Silverleaf, Denton*
February 19, The All Good Café, Dallas*
February 20, Saxon Pub, Austin*
