The Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band Release Joint Album

American music fans have an unprecedented opportunity to hear two masterful groups explore the common ground where bluegrass and jazz meet when the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band release their collaborative American Legacies project on April 12th via McCoury Music and Preservation Hall Recordings.  Inspired by the success of the Del McCoury’s participation on 2010’s PRESERVATION, a PHJB project made with multiple artists to benefit New Orleans’ unique Preservation Hall venue and its Music Outreach Program, the set offers a dozen songs filled with deep respect and joyful virtuosity.  Complementing the release, the two groups have announced a joint tour that will feature them performing on their own and together in a groundbreaking concert experience.

With common roots in the rich musical gumbo of the American south in the 19th and early 20th centuries, bluegrass and jazz have sat alongside one another with a myriad of common influences and musical vocabularies that have nevertheless remained largely unexplored until now. American Legaciesis a no-holds-barred tour of songs and sounds that sum up the simultaneous (and often intersecting) histories of two distinctively American musical forms—the jazz that has drawn music lovers from around the world to New Orleans for more than a century, and the “hillbilly jazz” of bluegrass, created more than 60 years ago by Del McCoury’s one-time employer, Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys.

Known as one of the premiere ambassadors of bluegrass, the Del McCoury Band is fronted by veteran Del McCoury,  A hero to east coast bluegrass audiences through the 1970s and 1980s, he stepped onto the national stage with a move to Nashville in the early 1990s that started the Del McCoury Band on an unprecedented streak of International Bluegrass Music Association awards and international acclaim.  Today, McCoury, along with a band that includes his sons Ron and Rob, are admired by hard-core bluegrass traditionalists and eclectic music fans and stars alike as they make appearances everywhere from the Bonnaroo Music Festival to late night network TV shows to their own popular Delfest.  For millions of fans across the US and around the world, the Del McCoury Band is simply the face of bluegrass.

Founded just a few years before McCoury joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been carrying the distinctive sound of New Orleans jazz around the world on behalf of Preservation Hall, a unique venue that embodies the city’s musical legacy.  With a cast of musicians schooled through first-hand experience and apprenticeship into the music’s historic traditions, the PHJB has served as an irreplaceable, vital link to the earliest days of one of America’s most beloved forms of popular music, evoking the spirits of times past in an ever-evolving modern context that has found them traveling around the world.

DJ YODA U.K. Turntablist 'DJ Yoda & Friends'

Audio-visual turntablist extraordinaire DJ YODA is set to release a brand new five-track EP entitled DJ YODA & FRIENDS out March 7, 2011 via A.Skillz’ Jam City label in North America. Taken from his exclusive album sessions, the EP follows DJ YODA’s groundbreaking Stop, Look & Listen Tour which saw him mashing audio and visual elements across the U.K., conquering various venues including the celebrated British Film Institute IMAX in London.

DJ YODA is no ordinary scratch DJ. His seminal How To Cut & Paste series showcased a tongue-in-cheek mixing style that prompted Q magazine in his native Britain to declare him “one of the ten DJs to see before you die,” while Hip Hop Connection voted him “one of the top three DJs in the world.” American gaming enthusiasts may be familiar with him as a contributor to ‘DJ Hero,’ for which he collaborated with its designers, contributing his expertise to the look of the game.  It also features two of his mixes and a DJ Yoda level.

From hip-hop beginnings, DJ YODA has evolved in the past ten years, using his turntable skills and diverse influences as varied as funk, b-more, kuduro, reggae, drum ‘n’ bass and even big band swing and country & western to make unashamed party music. On the DJ YODA & FRIENDS EP— the follow-up to his 2006 debut album The Amazing Adventures Of DJ Yoda, where he produced tracks with Biz Markie, 2005 MOBO-winner Sway, Princess Superstar, Jungle Brothers, MC Paul Barman and a host of other vocalists—the master producer teams with a unique cast of characters.  Rappers Izza Kizza, a vocalist from super-producer Timbaland's stable, and Gotty Boi Chris, a key figure in the very hot New Orleans Bounce scene, and DJ/producers A.Skillz, Hervé and Nick Thayer are DJ YODA’s cohorts on these five brand new tracks

A-Skillz has done it all from plying his turntable abilities at clubs and festivals across the world to producing his own tracks and helping mould others. Similarly, Joshua “Hervé” Harvey has created club smashes under various guises and collaborated with some of the most exciting players in the scene, including Fatboy Slim to create 2010’s “Machines will do the Work.”  Nick Thayer is an Australian DJ/Producer who has already won the support of Kissy Sell Out (Radio 1), the Stanton Warriors and Utah Saints amongst others, off the back of his debut album which he released in May, Just Let It Go.

On stage, DJ YODA can be found cutting the “Indiana Jones” theme with woofer-worrying dubstep or “The Muppet Show” theme with M.IA. His shows are peppered with film, TV and YouTube samples and visuals that lift his sets to new and stratospheric heights.  His live repertoire—which U.S. audiences will get to experience this spring when he comes over to tour—has him trail-blazing into the world of the audio-visual.  DJ YODA pioneered a new art form, using cutting-edge technology that he’s been instrumental in developing to scratch and mix visuals on top of his DJ sets in the clubs.

Starting out by re-scoring both “The Goonies” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” on the festival circuit in 2003 and 2004, DJ YODA went on to transform the average night out into a fusion of clubbing and the movies. His recent audio/visual tours have included “DJ Yoda Goes To The Movies,” “Magic Cinema Show” and “National Video Vacation.” Elements of his most recent outing with his “Stop Look And Listen” show can be found here.

Sleepy Rebels Announce New Album, "Yellow Tree"

Powerful Company will be releasing some breath-taking projects in 2011. Jeremy Adelman and Samantha Balassa formed the company. The pair are a true mom & pop musical powerhouse who found great success handling original music production and composition for advertising including national campaigns for VW, Hulu, Jaguar, and JCPenney. Their desires to make music outside the confines of the corporate creative process lead them to establish Powerful Company whose establishing project is the development and marketing of Sleepy Rebels. The New York based trio, collaboration comprised of Jeremy Adelman and siblings Bruce and Erica Driscoll, have designs to re-establish the coolness of positive sentiments and ideals. Yellow Tree is the manifesto that soundtracks their rebellion!

The pastoral images, sun drenched arrangements and sparkling melodies hit you like the first wave of the summer. “Let’s Take the Day Off” is a call to claim some time for yourself and hit the beach with that special someone. It’s instantly memorable hook will incite you to plan your next vacation day! “You Can Make the Sunrise” reminds listeners that everything is possible and that we all have the potential for greatness. The voices on the album are having a romance with the world itself.  The dreamy string arrangement on “We’ll Wake the World Up” underscores the songs narrative of waking up with someone you love just before daybreak. The record closes with “Something”, a soulful romp full of handclaps and horns. For an early listen of album track "You Can Make The Sunrise," download the MP3 HERE.

Powerful Company has quickly transformed from a 2 person team into a modern art factory attracting advertising's (and other industry's) greatest talent of freethinking writers, producers, musicians, directors, editors & designers who all share the same need to create content with artistic statements. Powerful Company has the capability to create through limitless channels including music, video, design, film & art.   In the first months of 2011, they will unveil the first few projects created by this team of talent; they include three films that serve as music videos for Sleepy Rebels. Both surreal in nature, they are intended to establish the band with aesthetic & clever visual imagery & technique.  The first video for the band's song “Magic Girl” reveals the band as eccentric street performers in a remote town in an unknown history & geography.  The second video for the song “Unbelievable” takes the unknown history & geography further and is an unexpected and surreal love story that happens in the most peculiar way.  The third video for dreamy “Looking Glass” finds a woman reflecting on love and looking towards the future as she walks the desolate cobblestone streets of a European town. The final project to be unveiled in the coming months will be a step away from typical band promotional material and will involve a collaboration with the high art world.

Beats Antique at the Boulder Theater

Z2 Entertainment is proud to present Beats Antique at the Boulder Theater on Friday, April 8th, 2011.

Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electonica and world roots music comes a masterful merge of modern technology, live instrumentation and seductive performance, built of brass bands and glitch, string quartets and dubstep: the musical trio Beats Antique.

Since the group’s inception from the eclectic underground of San Francisco’s performance art scene, Beats Antique has been notorious for making it nearly impossible to sit still. They meld their mediums as attentively as they fuse the cultures that inspire their sound. All self produced and composed, the trio creates a unique collage: an animalistic, raw musical event that blurs the lines between the provocative, the spiritual, and the artistic, while still maintaining an allegiance to the muses of class and beauty.

The journey that led to Beats Antique today was a winding and twisted path from the west coast to the ancient trade routes of the silk  road. In this modern incarnation, the musical alliance of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel is inspired and emphasized by their collaborative partnership with world-renowned belly dance performer and music producer Zoe Jakes.

David Satori and Tommy Cappel both trained classically before venturing to locations such as Bali, West Africa, Serbia and beyond. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation, born from Hip Hop and old school jazz.

Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the multi –cultural and –disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antique’s sound. Jakes has worked with 2  major dance troupes, Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brice’s Indigo Belly Dance Company, a student of ballet and contemporary techniques. Jake’s additional history with Cappel in the Extra Action Marching Band and the Yard Dogs Road Show grants some insight into the caliber of performance that is Beats Antique’s standard.

All of this sets the scene for Beats Antique’s overtly ambitious stage show, a sensory overload conquest of the festival circuit’s most riotous events, such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits festival, and Outside Lands, as well as a catalog of proper tours that include Bassnectar and a recent run with Les Claypool of PRIMUS in early 2010. According to Satori, the trio is excited by their ability to create a huge sound from their relatively small setup. “It gives us this whole new world of musical opportunities that we’re just starting to scratch the surface of.”

In a prolific 3 years since Beats Antique emerged, the group has released 2 albums and a pair of EPs, with a third album, Blind Threshold, on the way. Notable features of the new release include vaporous violins and Danny Elfman-esque dementia; glitchy, laser-guided harmonica provided by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; and 2 very different vocal tracks that range between restless pop hooks and vibrant Eastern European dance loops. All wrapped into an intricate collection of heavy beats and sub bass.

Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the world’s music chasing its tail. However vivid that image, when a marching band groove crashes into bluesy folk chords only to be accompanied by electronic beats and Middle Eastern melodies, you’ll still be surprised.

Tickets are on sale at Boulder Theater Box Office. Call (303) 786-7030 for tickets by phone.

Jake Shimabukuro has conquered the Billboard music charts this week with his instrument re-defining new album, Peace Love Ukulele. The album debuted at #1 on the "World Albums" chart (the ukulele virtuoso's best showing to date), blazed the "Heatseekers" chart with a Hot Shot debut in the 4th position, and also made it onto the “Independent Albums” chart at #31. Peace Love Ukulele, out on Hitchhike Records, has shattered the first week sales records of all previous Shimabukuro releases.

Sweet Honey In The Rock at the Boulder Theater

Founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973 at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey In The Rock, internationally renowned a cappella ensemble, has been a vital and innovative presence in the music culture of Washington, D.C., and in communities of conscience around the world.

From Psalm 81:16 comes the promise to a people of being fed by honey out of the rock. Honey - an ancient substance, sweet and nurturing. Rock - an elemental strength, enduring the winds of time. The metaphor of sweet honey in the rock captures completely these African American women whose repertoire is steeped in the sacred music of the Black church, the clarion calls of the civil rights movement, and songs of the struggle for justice everywhere.

Rooted in a deeply held commitment to create music out of the rich textures of African American legacy and traditions, Sweet Honey In The Rock possesses a stunning vocal prowess that captures the complex sounds of Blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, Hip Hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation. Sweet Honey's collective voice, occasionally accompanied by hand percussion instruments, produces a sound filled with soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms.

In the best and in the hardest of times, Sweet Honey In The Rock has come in song to communities across the U.S., and around the world raising her voice in hope, love, justice, peace, and resistance. Sweet Honey invites her audiences to open their minds and hearts and think about who we are and how we treat each other, our fellow creatures who share this planet, and of course, the planet itself.

The 2008-2009 season finds Sweet Honey celebrating her 35th birthday. What a year it has been and what a year it will be!

Sweet Honey's latest release, Experience...101 was a 2008 Grammy Award nominee. After attending the awards ceremony in Los Angeles, and walking the red carpet, the group summed up the experience in one word: amazing. The excitement continued as Sweet Honey was asked to compose new material in celebration of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater's 50th anniversary. Together these two artistic treasures of the African American experience are performing this once-in-a-lifetime collaboration throughout the United States.

Sweet Honey In The Rock is Ysaye Maria Barnwell, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Aisha Kahlil, Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, and Shirley Childress Saxton.
