Charmaine Clamor Delivers Something Good to NYC

Celebrated by The New York Times as “a gifted vocalist” and by The Los Angeles Times as “one of the important and original new jazz singers of the decade,” Pinay Pride Charmaine Clamor, the Queen of Jazzipino, returns to New York for a special CD Release concert on JANUARY 8, Saturday, 7PM at the TRIAD THEATER on 72nd and Broadway. The Triad hosted last year’s successful New York City Fil-Am JazzFest, headlined by Ms. Clamor.

Ms. Clamor, the 2009 Filipinas Magazine Entertainer of the Year, brings her 6-piece “Killin’ Sweehearts” band in support of their 4th U.S. album, Something Good. The album, heard locally on WKCR, WBAI, and WNYC is on the JazzWeek World Music radio chart – Clamor’s third straight album in the World Music Top-20.

Recognized by Jazz Times as the reigning Queen of Filipino Jazz, Ms. Clamor blends jazz with music of her beloved home country, the Philippines. She sings in both her adopted tongue of English and her native language, Tagalog, creating new (and swinging!) arrangements of beloved Filipino love songs such as “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” “Ikaw,” and “Dahil Sa Yo.”

Born in a developing country where accessible clean water is scarce, Charmaine has fostered a passion for the planet, focused on clean water conservation. In the 3-song Mother Nature Suite on Something Good, Charmaine pays respect to the planet. Charmaine’s devotion to a cleaner, healthier earth extends to her work with the Sierra Club Water Committee and Food & Water Watch. Clamor does not stop there, though. With the CD tray for Something Good manufactured from potato, the packaging for the album is 100% recyclable!

Finding harmonic similarities between the traditional spiritual song “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” and the traditional Filipina Visayan folk lullaby “Ili-Ili,” Clamor combined the two to create the haunting and stirring “Motherless Ili-Ili.” She will unveil the song on January 8 and will be available for autograph signing and photographs immediately after the concert.

Charmaine’s musical journey began at age 3, entertaining passengers in the back of buses traveling to Manila, in her homeland of the Philippines. A licensed physical therapist for 6 years, performing music whenever she could, Clamor soon realized she had to follow her artistic calling. But creating, developing and mastering one musical genre has never been enough for the brilliantly eclectic Clamor. Her global recognition reached new heights in 2010 when Charmaine was the only Filipina to appear on the David Byrne/Fatboy Slim concept album, “Here Lies Love” (Nonesuch), about the life of Imelda Marcos, the eccentric former First Lady of the Phillipines.

Charmaine’s previous releases include Searching for the Soul, Flippin’ Out, and My Harana: A Filipino Serenade. Whether it’s jazz, world, soul, funk, pop, swing, blues, folk or jazzipino, Charmaine Clamor always delivers Something Good. In New York on January 8, she intends on proving it.

B.B. King with Hazel Miller Trio @ Boulder Theater

His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. Yet B.B. King continues to wear his crown well. At age 76, he is still light on his feet, singing and playing the blues with relentless passion. Time has no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever. Don't look for him in some kind of semi-retirement; look for him out on the road, playing for people, popping up in a myriad of T.V. commercials, or laying down tracks for his next album. B.B. King is as alive as the music he plays, and a grateful world can't get enough of him.

For more than half a century, Riley B. King - better known as B.B. King - has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over fifty albums, many of them classics. Over the years, B.B. has developed one of the world's most identifiable guitar styles. He borrowed from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise and complex vocal-like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist's vocabulary. His economy, his every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players, from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Jeff Beck. Local Natives Release Entirety Of "Gorilla Manor" For Remix

Local Natives have just finished an epic year, touring the world in support of their critically acclaimed debut Gorilla Manor.  But just before they go into hiding to start work on their second record, they're wrapping a few things up first.

The band are adding the last four unreleased stems to their remix site, allowing fans and other artists to remix any song they like. All tracks are then posted for the world to download and enjoy.

Local Natives are planning on releasing their favorites on a special compilation later this month, so any remixes must be submitted by Dec 15th to be eligible.

"We are happy to announce that we just released the stems to the remaining last four songs from the album on our remix site (Airplanes, Warning Sign, Cubism Dream, and Stranger Things).  Also, in light of all the awesome remixes we've received over the past six months, we're going to pick our favorites and package them into a sort of "Best-Of" compilation, so make sure to get any remixes in by December 15th to make the cut.  Here is a download of a groovy take of "Stranger Things" by Wallpaper.  Enjoy, and happy holiday remixing!  Spike that eggnog, hug your loved ones, and feel that spirit."

Jake Shimabukuro's "Go For Broke" pays tribute to soldiers' legacy

On 'Peace Love Ukulele' (out January 4th from Hitchhike Records), Jake Shimabukuro displays his customary "brilliance and brio" (NPR) on the ukulele with "Go For Broke," a Shimabukuro original that pays heartfelt tribute to the courageous American soldiers of Japanese ancestry who fought and sacrificed their lives in World War II.

The motto of the second-generation (Nisei) Japanese-American soldiers from Shimabukuro's native Hawaii, the most highly decorated U.S. unit in military history, was "Go For Broke," meaning "to risk everything on one great effort to win big." That's also a good description of the way Shimabukuro plays, with "stunning chops" and "a deep and sensitive musicality" (Guitar Player).

The Nisei veterans' determination has been a source of inspiration for Shimabukuro, himself of Japanese ancestry, since he was a young boy.  “Whenever I am faced with a problem, I always ask myself, 'How can I handle this situation in a way that would make a Nisei veteran proud?'" he says of the men of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 100th Infantry Battalion, the 1399th Engineering Construction Battalion, and the Military Intelligence Service (MIS), who fought for the U.S. against their ancestral land at a time when those of Japanese heritage were often viewed with suspicion. “I think anyone who hears their story will be inspired to be a better person.”

Shimabukuro knows a peaceful way to express that inspiration. "If everyone played the ukulele, the world would be a better place," he says.

Brunette Marcella Puppini, a former assistant to fashion icon Vivienne Westwood, had dreamed of becoming opera’s next star.  Redhead Stephanie O’Brien began in music as a maverick of the classical world but found her niche playing gypsy jazz violin, South American harp and singing.  Blonde Kate Mullins, well, she sings like an angel and swears like a sailor.  The vocalists/multi-instrumentalists met in 2004 at London’s Trinity College of Music while pursuing Jazz Performance and Composition degrees.  Offered a gig at an outrageous gay nightclub, they jumped at the chance to perform.  Marcella, who gave the band her name, worked out a hasty arrangement of Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” inspired by ‘40s swing and jazz.  The crowd adored their stunning vocals and cocktail hour charisma.
Since then, along with releasing several singles and two albums, they have performed at the Glastonbury festival and on an American stadium tour supporting Cyndi Lauper; been heard on TV series in the U.K. and the U.S., including “Grey’s Anatomy”; and been in constant demand as guest performers at notable entertainment and fashion events across the globe.  Even Prince Charles personally told them he thought they were “splendid” (seriously, we could not make that up).  The Puppini Sisters may have started out retro but they have become true originals.  With Christmas With The Puppini Sisters, holiday music never sounded so fresh and new.

Dave Stryker CD Release @ Cecils | New Jersey

Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker fronting his own group (with 20 CD’s as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and Kevin Mahogany, you know why Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”  He was voted one of the Top Ten Guitarists in the 2001 Critics and Readers Poll of Downbeat Magazine, and was recently elected again as a Rising Star for the 5th time in the 2008 Downbeat Critics Poll. His latest CD is called "Keystone" on SteepleChase Records.

Stryker grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, moved to New York City in 1980, and joined organist Jack McDuff’s group, traveling all over the U.S. for two years (1984-85).  From 1986 to 1995, Stryker played with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, performing at all the major festivals, concert halls, and clubs throughout the world.  He has also performed with Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Eliane Elias, Joe Lovano and many others.

Dave currently performs with The Stryker / Slagle Band (with saxophonist Steve Slagle), The Dave Stryker Organ Trio and his Blue to the Bone Band.  He has recorded and published over 130 of his compositions, recorded 20 CD’s under his own name and recorded as a sideman on over 50 others.  He has performed all over the world at all the great Jazz Festivals and concert halls including Carnegie Hall, The Monterey Jazz Festival, The Newport Jazz Festival, and The JVC Jazz Festival.

Dave is also involved in passing along his experience by teaching both privately and at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, The Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, The Litchfield Jazz Camp, The Veneto/New School Jazz Workshop in Italy, and The Outreach Jazz Workshop in Austria.  His book Dave Stryker’s Jazz Guitar Improvisation Method, is available from Mel Bay Publishing.

Alan Hampton Announces Solo NYC & International Dates

Making the leap from sideman to solo artist, Alan Hampton's debut LP The Moving Sidewalk effortlessly showcases his tender, ashy voice shimmering over lush string trios, Dr. Who synthesizers and finger-picked acoustic guitars all performed by many of Brooklyn's finest musicians.

After performing around the world with artists including Gretchen Parlato, Sufjan Stevens, Clare and the Reasons, Robert Glasper and Elizabeth & the Catapult, Hampton announces solo NYC shows and national dates with Parlato to celebrate the release of The Moving Sidewalk.

Who is Alan Hampton:
Alan Hampton’s debut record, The Moving Sidewalk effortlessly showcases his range of musicality and resourcefulness. His tender, ashy voice shimmers over lush string trios, Dr. Who synthesizers, and finger-picked acoustic guitars, all performed by many of Brooklyn’s finest musicians. The ten, carefully constructed songs are intricate hybrids of various genres and influences, pooling from Brian Wilson, Wayne Shorter, and The Band.
Enhanced only by its homebrewed process, The Moving Sidewalk was recorded in Pete Rende’s Brooklyn apartment, and mixed in David Boucher’s Culver City garage. The album’s cover features Hampton’s whittled self-portrait standing on a winding sidewalk that ribbons from a cityscape made of papier mâché and wire form, which was designed and constructed with close friend Lindsey Anderson.
An extensive musical education; years of experience as a sideman and bassist in NYC; and practice in a variety of different genres have all contributed to the abundant reservoir of resources that make Hampton’s record at once eloquent and unassuming. Hampton studied composition and performance, and toured and performed with jazz luminaries Terrence Blanchard, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Southern California. After completing the program, he moved to Brooklyn where he made his mark as a bassist and sideman, performing around the world and recording with the likes of Gretchen Parlato, Sufjan Stevens, Clare and the Reasons, Robert Glasper, and Elizabeth and the Catapult.
Since the arrival of The Moving Sidewalk, and his leap from sideman to solo artist, Hampton has gained notoriety as a singer and a songwriter, and has appeared on records by singer Gretchen Parlato, and bassist Derrick Hodge, who is known for his work with Common, Mos Def, and Maxwell.
Where The Moving Sidewalk will take Hampton next, he can’t be sure. But the evidence rings loud and clear: In the world of music, Alan Hampton is quickly setting the pace.

DJ Shadow: Something to be Thankful for in Denver

On November 21, DJ Shadow (Josh Davis) is bringing his world famous mixing chops to the Ogden Theater in Denver. Live from Shadowsphere, it is the beginning of an easy work week for most people, and the DJ plans to start the week off right with guest Pigeon John at 8 pm.

DJ Shadow is widely considered as a prominent figure in the development of experimental and instrumental hip hop. His debut album Endtroducing got him on the map, and also in the Guiness Book of World Records for the “First Completely Sampled Album” in 2001. Shadow is also a producer, and has produced tracks for the Mo’ Wax team featuring the likes of Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Richard Ashcroft (the Verve), and Mike D (Beastie Boys). After releasing several more successful albums with elite rappers such as: Keak Da Sneak, E-40, and Q-Tip (Tribe Called Quest) and a David Letterman performance, Shadow opened his own web store www.showDJShadow.com for fans to get his freshest tracks. Last year, Shadow became involved in the video game industry with DJ Hero, which features Shadow as a playable character and several of his tracks. While currently working on his new album, which he calls a “return to form,” during a gig in Antwerp this summer, he stated that it’s not quite ready yet, but he will keep working on it to have it ready for future tours.

Jake Shimabukuro Believes Music is Good Medicine

Jake Shimabukuro is recognized as one of the world's most exciting and innovative ukulele players and composers, having "given the ukulele a new respect altogether" (All Music Guide), as he demonstrates on his forthcoming album ‘Peace Love Ukulele,' out January 4, 2011 on Hitchhike Records.

But as his career continues to blossom, Shimabukuro, a Hawaiian, is also busy giving back to his island community, using the ukulele as his tool. He’s currently the head spokesperson for Music is Good Medicine (MIGM), a living-healthy community program that tours schools, hospitals and senior centers around Hawaii and on the US mainland, as well as in Guam, Saipan and Japan.



Shimabukuro’s belief that music is good medicine goes all the way back to his childhood. "Ever since my mother first put a ukulele in my hands at the age of four," he says, "this magical instrument has been a positive force in my life – helping to steer me away from drugs, violence and other negative influences. It fueled my passion for music, which has helped me to develop in mind, body and spirit."

He points to the therapeutic, stress-reducing benefits of playing music and says the ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to learn, as well as one of the most affordable. "This tiny, four-string instrument is a universe of joy and healing, with a childlike quality about it that returns us to our youth and energizes us."
