Adrian Belew Power Trio ft. members of King Crimson at Boulder Theater

Boulder Weekly is proud to present Adrian Belew Power Trio with Stickmen featuring Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto from King Crimson at the Boulder Theater on Tuesday, October 11th, 2011.  Tickets go on sale Friday, June 24th for $25 General Admission, $30 Reserved and $40 Gold Circle.

“2 of a Perfect Trio” Tour

King Crimson players Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto keep very busy individually when Crimson's not active, but now, a historic joint tour: Adrian Belew Power Trio will headline the bill, with Stick Men (featuring Tony and Pat) opening.

And of course, how could they resist joining together for a Crim-centric extended encore - after their respective sets we'll see them reconfigure as Ade/Tony/Pat trio, morphing into the double trio lineup like King Crimson featured in the 90's.

The tour name, 2 of a Perfect Trio, harkens to the King Crimson song "3 of a Perfect Pair"

Adrian Belew's trio features the amazing bassist Julie Slick, and NYC drummer Tobias Ralph - perfect complements to Belew's extraordinary guitar playing and singing.

Stick Men presents Tony Levin's virtuosic playing on the Chapman Stick, with Pat Mastelotto giving his unique progressive drumming on both acoustic and electronic drums. Markus Reuter rounds out the band, playing his self-designed touch style guitar.

Woodcock Group Debuts 'Water Stories'

Woodcock Group's trio gives jazz listeners a piece of music works that evoke a great characteristic of eloquence impressive for an artist that has not even released its debut CD to stores, until now with Sunset Jazz. This Serbian jazz trio also composes and arranges its music and every song on this ten (10) song full length CD. Woodcock Group’s new debut album, Water Stories (Sunset Jazz Recordings) gives jazz aficionados great evidence there are new music artists in jazz that can carry a wide-ranged music of original songs taken as a conceptual, the album is now available to pre order at Amazon. The Jazz label is continuing to set up the full length CD for the May 3rd street day, with its' Sunset Classics & Jazz (SC&J) division, Sunset Distribution Company and then via Republic Universal for digital distribution into stores.

Woodcock Group is a band that is no doubt aware of its mixing modern jazz with traditional jazz music influenced by, among others, Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans and Art Blakey. Born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, in the spring of 2009 pianist and composer Aleksandar Jovanovic founded the "Woodcock Group." What is now a trio with (Aleksandar) Jovanovic, Marko Fabry is on the bass while Aleksandar Cvetkovic does the drum work on the ten (10) song CD. Their first performance was at the "Umbria Jazz Balcanic Windows" Music Festival 2009 in Belgrade, which they won in a competition winning over 28 bands from the south-eastern Europe regions. Not to mention, they were listed in the top six as best young jazz band in Eastern Europe this year. "I not only plan on using this album to springboard a new sense of direction at Sunset Jazz (Recordings)", says label head, Don Lichterman, "we are also in hope of using Alex's (Aleksandar Jovanovic) A&R chops to gain more jazz acts for the label."

The debut album being released at Sunset (Jazz) is inspired by "water" as in a state of a "form" and (Don) Lichterman says that he, "loves the concept" of it. He (Lichterman) goes on to say that he also "loves the deep traditional style of this band (Woodcock Group)." Woodcock Group's debut recording entitled, Water Stories, has already gained international radio play with "Vrelo," the first song being worked to radio this year. And the CD has received great critical acclaim after the label released its initial press to blogs and social networks. Look for the CD to be available in stores everywhere that sells cds along with being made available at every retailer that sells downloads, ringtones and streams, on May 3rd this year!

Jake Hertzog Trio Live At Miles Cafe This Friday!

Jake Hertzog, one of the most original and exciting young guitarists on the of the modern jazz guitar and fusion. Drawing from extensive experience in the jazz world and indie rock scene, Hertzog has developed a truly original sound.  At only 24 years old, Jake has already released two critically acclaimed fusion albums, Chromatosphere (2009, Thats Out) and Patterns (2010, Buckyball).  A distinguished graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Jake performed with jazz greats Joe Lovano, Terri Lyne Carrington, Michael Wolff, Mike Clark, and Greg Osby. In 2006 He was also the youngest ever winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival Jazz Guitar Competition and was invited to open for John Scofield at the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival.

As a result of touring the US as bandleader for Nickelodeon pop-stars Nat and Alex Wolff, performing in arenas, and playing with dozens of indie rock bands in the New York scene most notably "Wakey Wakey",  Jake developed a ferocious performance style, uncommon in the jazz world.  In addition to an aggressive performance schedule, Jake is an active jazz educator and has done workshops all over the world.  He currently writes a jazz column for Guitar Player Magazine (US) entitled “Hey Jazz Guy”, and has been coined "The jazz ambassador to the non-jazz world".  2011 will be an exciting year for Jake Hertzog, as a new album is set to be released late spring, as well as Jake's singer-songwriter project "The Young Presidents" will also be releasing a new album.

The Jake Hertzog Trio, featuring jazz legends Harvie S and Victor Jones is one of the most dramatic and exciting 'force of nature' acts in the instrumental world.  The unforgettable live experience is somewhere between, Jimi Hendrix and John Mayer, Pat Metheny and U2, Keith Richards and John Scofield.  The only way to find out is to experience it yourself.

New names @ Gent Jazz Festival 2011

Gent Jazz Festival (7-17 July) is able to add more great names to its line-up. On Saturday 17th July we are honored to welcome the masters of contemporary tango, the Gotan Project, as well as retro-funk artist Raphael Saadiq.

Thursday 14th July we are glad to present to you three queens of jazz, Sing The Truth: Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves & Lizz Wright continue the legacies of Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta. The women will follow a performance by Jef Neve and his Trio, who have become the favorite of the crowd. Gent Jazz Festival will be opened by the winner of Young Jazz Talent Gent 2010, the Nathan Daems Quintet. It will be the start of a great festival day which will be headlined by an artist that festival director Bertrand Flamang dreamt of programming 10 years ago. For the 9th of July we previously announced BB King and Steven De Bruyn, Tony Gyselinck & Roland and they will be accompanied by gospel and blues diva Mavis Staples.

  • Nathan Daems Quintet is the winner of the youth competition Young Jazz talent 2010. The jury said about them: “If the members of this band keep on inspiring each other and if leader Nathan Daems takes control a bit firmer, this quintet has great perspectives.” This year they open the 10th edition of the Gent Jazz Festival. One year later we are looking forward to the result.
  • More than fifty years ago, Mavis Staples took her first steps into music history when she became a member of The Staple Singers. This blues and gospel diva is in topnotch condition and proves it on her recent album ‘You’re Not Alone’. She’s back, better than before, all thanks to Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) with whom she made a collaboration.
  • Jef Neve hardly needs any introduction. He is without a doubt the Belgian jazz pianist of the moment. He performs in his trio with Teun Verbruggen and Ruben Samama.
  • Sing The Truth: Dianne Reeves, Lizz Wright & Angelique Kidjo are the best female jazz singers of their generation. Earlier they had sung in a project featuring the music of Nina Simone. This time they interpret and revise the music of three legends: Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta.
  • Raphael Saadiq: This contemporary funk soul brother brings his own version of the Motown and Stax sound he grew up. Raphael Saadiq stands for funky and danceable soul.
  • Gotan Project (photo): The French-Argentinean collective, Gotan Project succeeds at mixing and matching the passion and sensuality which are typical of tango. Adding a dose of electronic elements give a contemporary feel and makes it possible for the band to reintroduce tango in the 21st century.

A Benefit Jazz Concert Charlie Hunter Duo & Daniel Bennett Group

Sunday Series at Abingdon is proud to present 8-string "groove" guitarist Charlie Hunter and "Folk Jazz" Saxophonist Daniel Bennett who are teaming up for a special double bill performance to benefit not-for-profit Abingdon Theatre Company.

Guitarist Charlie Hunter has established himself as one of America's preeminent guitar players and musical innovators. Hunter’s latest recording, Gentlemen, I Neglected To Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid, features the guitarist alongside drummer Eric Kalb (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, John Scofield) and a new horn section, including trombonist Curtis Fowlkes (Jazz Passengers, Lounge Lizards, Bill Frisell), trombonist Alan Ferber (Don Byron,  Kenny Wheeler) and trumpeter Eric Biondo (Antibalas, TV On The Radio). This marks Hunter's second full-length release on his independent label Spire Artist Media. Hunter follows up his latest trio album, Baboon Strength, with an ambitious effort recorded live direct to two-inch analog tape.

Critically acclaimed New York saxophonist Daniel Bennett has recently shared concert stages with national artists like Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter, James Carter, Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin & Wood), Jerry Bergonzi, and David Fiuczynski. Bennett’s musical journey began as a graduate student at the prestigious New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts.  While at NEC, Bennett studied saxophone with Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, and Ken Radnofsky.  Daniel Bennett graduated from the conservatory in 2004 and began performing as a freelance musician with groups like the Portland Symphony, New Hampshire Festival Orchestra, Musaner, and the Duprees. During this time, Bennett also began to compose songs that featured folk melodies played on the saxophone in a jazz quartet format.  Bennett's chord progressions also maintained a unique minimalist quality, influenced by composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass.. The band’s landmark debut album, A Nation of Bears, was met with critical acclaim. The Daniel Bennett Group released The Legend of Bear Thompson in the spring of 2008. Metronome Magazine ranked the album in their top five picks of the month, declaring, "the trio is so in sync with each other that it's downright mystical."  In 2009, the Daniel Bennett Group released Live at the Theatre, a groundbreaking album that was recorded live during a double bill performance with the Charlie Hunter Trio. The Daniel Bennett Group has been featured on popular radio programs like Harvard University’s Jazz Spectrum (WHRB 95.3FM).  The group has also made television appearances on Bandwidth TV, The Music Closet, Style Boston, and Sal's Show. The Daniel Bennett Group can be heard at clubs and festivals throughout the United States.

Since 1993, not-for-profit Abingdon Theatre Company has developed and produced new plays by American playwrights exclusively. Under the artistic direction of Jan Buttram, the company provides a safe home in which playwrights collaborate with other theatre artists and receive audience feedback through the utilization of a four-step development process: First Readings, Staged Readings, and Workout Labs, which culminate in Studio Productions and Mainstage Productions.
