Shakedown Street: 9-6-83 Red Rocks

In the live music venues of the Rocky Mountain region, there are only a few bands that consistently draw large crowds. One of the more notorious is Shakedown Street. By virtue of their success, they have proven that Grateful Dead music is an American musical institution that is rallied by hundreds of thousands and hard to resist . By necessity and demand, there are literally dozens of Grateful Dead cover bands in this country. However, Shakedown Street has garnered a national reputation as being the mother of all Dead bands!!

Shakedown Street has provided a musical and spiritual public service for "deadheads" for over 23 years. The Band has performed numerous times with former members of the Grateful Dead including; Vince Welnick (keyboards), Tom Constanten (Keyboards), Melvin Seals (B3 for JGB) and Bob Bralove (the Dead's longtime sound designer.) Shakedown Street has also played with and opened for many national acts including three shows with Hot Tuna, twice with the J.G.B. Band, twice with The David Nelson Band, Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band, several shows with Spirit, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Jerry Jeff Walker, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Arlo Guthrie, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and The Colonel.

Henry Rollins @ Boulder Theater

In the '90s, Henry Rollins emerged as a post-punk renaissance man, without the self-conscious trappings that plagued such '80s artists as David Byrne. Following Black Flag's breakup in 1986, Rollins was been relentlessly busy, recording albums with the Rollins Band, writing books and poetry, performing spoken word tours, writing a magazine column in Details, acting in several movies, and appearing on radio programs and, less frequently, as an MTV VJ. The Rollins Band's records are uncompromising, intense, cathartic fusions of hard rock, funk, post-punk noise, and jazz experimentalism, with Rollins shouting angry, biting self-examinations and accusations over the grind. On his spoken word albums, he is remarkably more relaxed, showcasing a hilariously self-deprecating sense of humor that is often absent in his music. All the while, he has kept his artistic integrity, becoming a kind of father figure for many alternative bands of the '90s.

The Barr Brothers To Tour With The Low Anthem

Brad and Andrew Barr, best known as founding members of revered rock bands The Slip and Surprise Me Mr. Davis, are adding a third act to their repertoire. In the long tradition of brothers who've assumed their surname as a moniker, The Barr Brothers introduce themselves with a string of West Coast and Canadian shows opening for The Low Anthem.

The seeds for The Barr Brothers were first sown five years ago when Brad and Andrew relocated to Montreal. Brad's apartment shared an adjoining wall with harpist Sarah Page. The two would hear each other practicing through the cracks. Sarah's gentle melodies began weaving their way into the music that Brad was writing. A friendship was struck and songs were born. This latest endeavor for Brad and Andrew finds them exploring sounds quieter and more ethereal than anything in their previous work. Final touches are currently being added to a debut recording that will be released later this year.

Brad and Andrew Barr remain equally committed to their other bands, as well. Plans will be announced in the coming weeks for Surprise Me Mr. Davis tour dates and EP release, while work is also underway on the next full-length studio album by The Slip.

Upcoming tour dates by The Barr Brothers are:

March 24 | Coronet @ Largo | Los Angeles, CA*
March 25 | Bootleg | Los Angeles, CA*
March 26 | Great American Music Hall | San Francisco, CA*
March 28 | Doug Fir Lounge | Portland, OR*
March 30 | St. James Hall | Vancouver, Canada*
March 31 | Crocodile Cafe | Seattle, WA*
April 10 | Church Of The Redeemer | Toronto, Canada*
April 12 | Eglise du Gesu | Montreal, Canada*
April 27 | The Saturn Bar | New Orleans, LA**

State of the Scene: Where Have All the Good Bands Gone?

Festival season!  I love it, and it is almost upon us.  After viewing the initial lineups for some of the big music festivals I couldn't help but notice the large number of indie rock bands that are sneaking their way into what are usually very jam-heavy celebrations.
