Zappa plays Zappa - photos by A. Bell- for the Grateful Web

Los Angeles' THE ROXY THEATRE first opened its doors in the late fall of 1973.  35 years later, the legendary venue marks this significant milestone as one of America's longest-running independently owned and operated establishments with two monumental shows highlighting its rich musical history: Zappa Plays Zappa December 10, 11, 12 and 13 and a New Years Eve performance by The Wailers.

In December, the spirit of Frank Zappa—who along with the Mothers recorded numerous live tracks of Roxy & Elswhere in 1973 and 1974—returns to THE ROXY with a four-night run of Zappa Plays Zappa.  Led by Frank's son Dweezil Zappa, the band will perform various compositions the musical icon wrote from the 1960's through the 1980's.

THE ROXY's anniversary celebrations will culminate with the greatest living exponents of Jamaica's reggae tradition - The Wailers - on New Year's Eve.  At this show presented by Indie 103.1, they will perform in its entirety Exodus - the album TIME magazine called "Album of the Century" in 1999 - among other hits.   Bob Marley & The Wailers first appeared at THE ROXY in the spring of 1976 where they recorded the seminal live album, Live At The Roxy.

Today the venue is helmed by Nic Adler, son of legendary producer Lou Adler (Monterey International Pop Festival, The Rocky Horror Show, Jan and Dean, Johnny Rivers, The Mamas and The Papas, Spirit, Carole King, Cheech and Chong), who along with Elmer Valentine launched THE ROXY onto the forefront of the American musical landscape.  It remains one of the most prominent independently owned venues in Los Angeles.  The history of THE ROXY is paved with icons, whether it was pre-stardom shows from yet to be famous acts like David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Guns N' Roses, Foo Fighters, Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse and the Pussycat Dolls, the setting for landmark "Live At The Roxy" recordings by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Brian Wilson and Social Distortion, or the designated party destination for John Lennon, John Belushi and any music-savvy celebrity today.   Even up to now, with recent shows with Nas, Samantha Ronson and teen sensation Demi Lovato, THE ROXY's patrons are always privy to the best in what is the best in music today. Three decades on, the club has also been a popular performance mecca for other entertainment including stage productions, comedy shows and performance art.

Rex Foundation Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Phil @ Rothbury - photos by Amanda- for the Grateful Web

The Rex Foundation, founded by the Grateful Dead in 1983, celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year and continues to support community organizations through the art of giving. In September, the Rex Foundation donated $72,500 to 13 grassroots charities, marking a total of $1 million in grants since its renewal in 2001 in the absence of direct Grateful Dead concert funding.

Ali Akbar College of Music received this year's Ralph J. Gleason Award, named in honor of the pioneering music critic and chronicler of San Francisco's music scene. The mission of the Ali Akbar College of Music is to teach, perform and preserve the classical music of North India. The Rex grant of $10,000 will go to support the Library and Archive Project, which will house the ongoing collection of Ali Akbar Khan and his college in order to make it accessible to students, scholars, and music lovers.

All Stars Project, San Francisco Bay Area received the Jerry Garcia Award, honoring the Grateful Dead's late guitarist. This group brings to California's Bay Area the All Stars "performatory" approach to inner-city youth development. The $10,000 grant will help ASP create outside-of-school, educational and performing arts activities for poor and minority young people.

The Beat Within is this year's recipient of the Bill Graham Award, honoring the memory of the legendary concert promoter and philanthropist. The Beat Within provides incarcerated youth the means for self-expression and positive connection with their community through weekly writing and conversation workshops and weekly publication of their writing and art; the $10,000 grant from the Rex Foundation will further their work.

In addition, 10 grassroots groups received smaller grants; see the accompanying page for a full listing.

Since its foundation in 1983, the Rex Foundation has granted $8.4 million to over 1,000 recipients, primarily grassroots non-profit organizations likely to be under the radar of larger funding entities.  Continuing to embody the spirit of generosity and concern that evolved in the culture surrounding Grateful Dead concerts, the Rex Foundation seeks to include and engage many people with activities that honor the spirit of community, service and creativity.

So where do Lily Tomlin, Melissa Etheridge, Billie Jean King and Eve Ensler play a part in this celebration?  Along with 28 other celebrities, they have put together an amazing video production that will be part of the show; a video no one will want to miss....

From lesbian-separatist coffeehouses to mainstream concert halls, from production collectives to event planners, from patchouli to professionalism, from invisibility to undeniable visibility - you too have been part of that movement.

Kate Clinton is a faith-based, tax-paying, America-loving political humorist and family entertainer.  With a career spanning over 25 years, Kate Clinton has worked through economic booms and busts, Disneyfication and Walmartization, gay movements and gay markets, lesbian chic and queer eyes, and ten presidential inaugurals.  She still believes that humor gets us through peacetime, wartime and scoundrel time.
