Kiwi Songstress Jackie Bristow To Release 'Freedom'

Recording artist Jackie Bristow, who was born in New Zealand, came into her own professionally in Australia and now makes her home in Austin, releases her third outstanding album next month, the glorious, unbound FREEDOM (Feb. 15, 2011), and embarks on a U.S. tour with internationally acclaimed guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel.

With her acoustic guitar, silky vocals and the folk-pop originals on the new album (two are co-writes), Bristow will crisscross this country, from Austin to the West Coast to mid-America to the East Coast through February, and then return to Austin for a March 10 CD Release Party at Momo’s Club.

Bristow’s new album was recorded between Austin and Sydney and was co-produced by Bristow and Mark Punch, the first of her albums they have co-produced. Musicians on the album include J.J. Johnson (who has played with John Mayer), Punch (Kasey Chambers), Chris Maresh (Eric Johnson), Matt Fell (Josh Pyke), Jeff Young (Steely Dan), Clayton Doley and Rob Woolf (Jimmy Barnes).

The title track features the free-spirited vocals that Bristow is known for, a Hammond organ and an echoing gospel chorus. “Hightail It Outta Here” follows in the same vein, a bit more spunky perhaps, and “Broken Girl,” a powerful anthem, reverberates with both Bristow’s and Punch’s guitars. The final track, “Aotearoa,” is an ode to her homeland.
“Bristow returns, and she’s totally in control. FREEDOM is red-hot,” says the Waikato (New Zealand) Times. “A brilliant work of art, from a brilliant singer,” says NZ Music.net. “However more than just a singer, Bristow is a story-teller, and she has many tales to tell.”
Bristow’s songs have been used repeatedly in Australian and New Zealand film and hit TV shows, and her “This is Australia” won Tourism Australia’s Song Competition and was featured in a worldwide promotional campaign. In America, she has been heard on the in-store broadcast at Starbucks restaurants across the country.

Blair Announces Feb/Mar Tour With Say Hi

Brooklyn-based artist Blair has announced new tour dates in support of Say Hi this February and March. The lengthy jaunt will launch February 18th at Neurolux in Boise, ID and wrap up March 30th at The Media Club in Vancouver, BC. The tour includes a hometown show on March 7th at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, as well as two dates during this year's SXSW festival. Blair's debut full-length Die Young was released early last year by Autumn Tone Records.

Die Young is a winsome mix of dreamy, hazy indie pop influenced by Blair's love for '90s FM radio (think Beck and Nirvana) and the records spun on her mother's turntable (like Bob Dylan and Neil Young) while growing up in New Orleans, LA. The album was written - in both her hometown and Los Angeles, CA - and re-recorded over the course of five years. The songs were finally laid to tape in New Orleans using both traditional studios and makeshift home setups, with the help of producer Keith Ferguson and a host of musician friends filling out the parts.

As her airy vocals tell stories of heartache, daydreams and memories, throughout the album Blair shows herself to be a nimble musician and songwriter with an innate sense of sumptuous melody. Whether the angular guitar pop of opener "Rampage," the sweetly yearning "Hearts" (listen/download here), the sprightly whimsy of "Hello Halo," the '60s girl-group swing of "Paris France," or the soaring, lush "Wolfboy" (listen/download here), it's easy to understand why PasteMagazine.com gave her its 'Best Of What's Next' label and why Muzzle Of Bees declared Die Young "...a pop album for this generation...one of the year's most promising surprises."

G. Love Premieres "Fixin' To Die" Video

G. Love premieres the video for title track "Fixin' To Die" featuring Scott and Seth Avett today over at Vevo. Be sure to catch G. Inspired by the shared musical heritage between G. Love and The Avett Brothers, the result is Fixin’ To Die, a collection of rearranged traditionals, a classic cover, and a slew of G. Love has cultivated over his entire career but never fully embraced until now.

Siriusmo To Preview Debut Album, Mosaik

After releasing dozens of singles & EPs on various Berlin-based record labels and remixing artists, including Scissor Sisters, Gossip, Chikinki, Simian Mobile Disco, Boys Noize, Digitalism, Chromeo, A-Trak, Munk and more, for over a decade, the inimitable Berlin producer, graffiti artist, ghost-painter & illustrator, Siriusmo (aka Moritz Friedrich), is set to release his debut album, Mosaik, March 1st on Monkeytown Records.

With Siriusmo’s previous releases striding confidently through a rich array of genres – from dubstep to disco, hip-hop to house, electro to experimental – his work is invested with incomparable diversity, eschewing outright any danger of a four-four snooze-fest over the course of an hour. Indeed, in its premeditated hodgepodge of styles, composite sonic totality and rugged texture, Mosaik couldn’t be more of a fitting rubric. Leading up this full-length release, Siriusmo is offering listeners a preview of what’s to come by featuring snippets of the record on his Soundcloud page. Several bits are already up, and the rest will be added by March 1st.

Betraying influences from the 70s to the present day and beyond, one foot keeps the door to the past ajar while the other kicks the door to the future wide open. The palpable funk and thumb-slap bass of opener, “High Together”, the pop-baroque of “Idiologie” and warped rap of “Bad Idea” all point towards Moritz's grounding in the records of Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and plentiful helpings of hip-hop. Any hint of nostalgia, however, is dragged kicking and screaming into a 21st Century discotheque where the bass is twisted, the beats are laden and space-age grandiosity envelops the whole.

Siriusmo’s timbre-palette is strikingly visceral and his understanding and appreciation of the intricacies of harmony prevail; every note is a corporal experience as well as an aural one. And for every drop of dancefloor sweat, there’s a soothing breeze to cool down. Individual melodic lines dance impishly around one another on “Signal”, for example, as sonic warmth is woven on a loom in your ears. Throughout Mosaik, Siriusmo makes an arresting switch from the beefy to the beautiful, from the body to the mind, as elegantly tapped organ keys play a melody with soulful poise. It's this type of canny counterpoint that provides the stitching throughout Mosaik's vibrant patchwork.

Ellie Goulding To Release Special Version Of "Lights"

Already a success in her native England, 24 year-old UK singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding will release a special US full length of LIGHTS March 8th on Cherrytree/ Interscope Records. The US version will include three songs (“Lights,” “Animal,” and “Your Song”) not available on the original UK version. Produced by Starsmith, Goulding’s full length release LIGHTS shot to #1 on the UK chart in March 2010. This past December “Your Song” hit #2 on the charts and #1 on the iTunes Chart and the video has received over 6 million views. “Starry Eyed” has already received over 12.5 million views on YouTube.
This past September, Ellie made her maiden voyage to the US in support of her EP, AN INTRODUCTION TO ELLIE GOULDING.  She performed in New York and Los Angeles to rave reviews. The New Yorker called Ellie “the future of music” and the Los Angeles Times raved, “her set seemed to cement her pop bona fides.” “She can reel off some powerful drum and guitar chops and her voice is a serious and sure instrument in person.”

Ian Moore's 'El Sonido Nuevo' set for March release

El Sonido Nuevo, the seventh studio record from Austin-raised, Seattle-based singer-songwriter Ian Moore, bridges the gap between the stylistic offshoots of his past few records and the guitar-slinging bravado that characterized his earlier, often bluesier, output. “The album is a retrenching in the face of a diffuse pop culture landscape,” says Moore, now fronting power-pop trio the Lossy Coils for El Sonido Nuevo. “Every band has ten members, every movie is a sequel, there are 500 channels and nothing’s on.”

El Sonido Nuevo, due out March 8, 2011 on Seattle-based label Spark & Shine, distributed by Burnside Distribution, will be available in all formats including vinyl. Digital distribution on iTunes and the rest of the digital world will be through IODA. The iTunes release will have two bonus tracks not on the CD.  The trio will perform songs from the new collection at a handful of Texas and Oklahoma concert dates beginning on March 3, leading up to shows at South by Southwest (March 15–20, 2011) in Austin, Texas.

A certain sentiment rings out loud and clear, from the opening track, “Secondhand Store,” right on through the album: “We wrote it after South by Southwest when we were dealing with that onslaught of hipsters taking over the East Side of Austin — everybody has an angle and nobody seems to be actually doing anything,” says Moore, whose songwriting lets loose lyrics peppered with relevant and provocative topics. “It’s a mish-mash of jaded feelings in a dark moment.”

The Lossy Coils, formed in Seattle in the mid-2000s, features Moore, bassist Matt Harris (Oranger, Posies), and drummer Kyle Schneider (Johnny Goudie). The album was co-written with Harris, who has also played with Roky Erikson and Pavement’s Spiral Stairs. With Moore’s inspiring guitar work leading the way, El Sonido Nuevo alternates between rockers and ballads, pure songs and pure sounds, with a lush pop introduction that follows the same Beatles-by-the-way-of-Big Star thread that has informed the best work of contemporaries like Wilco.

Moore, a prodigy of self-invention, has built a career following his artistic instincts, which hasn’t always worked from a business perspective. Still, he’s been steadily accruing fans by staying on the road doing everything from solo acoustic shows to full band gigs in the U.S. and abroad. Moore’s skilled musicianship has been requested by many of his stylistic forefathers. Milestones include playing “Like a Rolling Stone” on the road with Bob Dylan, drinking goblets of wine and trading guitar riffs with Keith Richards on tour with the Rolling Stones, exchanging mix tapes with Paul Weller, performing “Whisky River” with Willie Nelson, singing a duet with Emmylou Harris, and backing artists as divergent as Roky Erikson and Jason Mraz.

Moore’s pared-back band on the record was a purposeful step into stripping away artifice and décor.  The songs on El Sonido Nuevo are simple and direct. Previously Moore might have been inclined to layer sonics and complex arrangements; here the record is straightforward, the songs clean and without ornamentation. Moore returns to the boundaries of what he can do with six strings and his largely unsung, soulful voice.

Born in Berkeley, Calif., Moore grew up in Austin, Texas, and made his mark there in the early ’90s as a blues-guitar virtuoso. Early sideman duty for Texas roots legend Joe Ely led to a 1993 self-titled solo record on Capricorn that propelled Moore to those critical opening gigs for the Stones and Dylan, as well as a notable appearance in Billy Bob Thornton’s indie hit film Slingblade. Moore’s broad palette of influences and interests was further explored in the video for “Harlem,” directed by rapper and actor Ice Cube.

Critics have long loved Moore’s studio output: Dave Hickey in Art in America magazine called his Modernday Folklore “one of the best moments in contemporary art in 1996,” while Harp magazine observed, “Since the early ’90s the native Texan has refused corporate molding in favor of freedom and the artistic rewards are staggering.” Moore’s 2004 release Luminaria received numerous accolades, including from Billboard’s Chris Morris, who noted, “The burden of the contemporary singer/ songwriter is in formulating a sound that is completely unique. With Luminaria, Ian Moore accomplishes just that.” And of his most recent release, 2007’s To Be Loved, All Music Guide wrote, “Moore has created a brand of challenging yet highly melodic new-millennium pop-rock that establishes him as an audacious songwriter and player. He has struck that rare balance between astute complexity and utter pop appeal.”

Moore has been placed into the circle of guitarist-songwriters likes Mayfield, Hendrix, and Buckley, “where pop isn't a dirty word and where music comes straight from the soul.” He has made hundreds of television appearances, from regional TV shows to the Today show and the Late Show With David Letterman to a one-hour Direct TV special, while avid watchers of American Idol have seen contestants cover Moore’s songs “Blue Sky” and “Satisfied.” And the Austin Music Awards have repeatedly voted him Best Singer, Musician and Band.

The manner in which Moore has moved across styles and cultural boundaries has rallied critics but, sometimes, confused his longtime fans. On El Sonido Nuevo, the blues and rock guitar he’s best known for is back, bolstered by confident songwriting and the absorbed echoes of those influences and stylistic adventures.

With El Sonido Nuevo, Moore’s musical journey bands together all these disparate influences with a confidence, subtlety, depth and, some would argue, a return to form on the guitar.

Bobby Long Announces 2011 North American Tour

ATO Records will release A Winter Tale, the highly anticipated debut record from British singer-songwriter Bobby Long, on February 1. Recorded in London, the eleven-song album was produced by Grammy-award winner Liam Watson (The White Stripes) and features backing vocals from Nona Hendryx (LaBelle) and Icelandic singer Lay Low as well as pedal steel by B.J. Cole (Elton John, Sting). In support of the record, Long will embark on a nationwide North American tour this January, including dates at the Sundance Film Festival and SXSW.

After relocating to London from Wiltshire in the countryside of Southwest England, Long became a fixture in the city’s burgeoning open-mic scene, where he met actor and fellow musician Robert Pattinson. Pattinson would go on to sing “Let Me Sign” (co-written by Long and friend Marcus Foster) over a crucial dramatic scene in the blockbuster film Twilight. Subsequently, in support of his bedroom-made recording Dirty Pond Songs, Long embarked on a worldwide tour in April 2009, performing over 160 shows in seven countries. Of the singer, the San Diego Entertainer heralds, “All his songs are like a well-orchestrated ballet of chord progressions and vocals that pluck at the deepest confined thoughts of your soul,” while  Pollstar praises, “Long’s emergence as an up-and-coming artist is the stuff Hollywood loves to make movies about. Conspirator - Coast to Coast and Back Again

Conspirator, the duo of Disco Biscuits’ staples Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner which often features guest musicians in the live setting, has announced a national tour of “full band” performances featuring Chris Michetti and a rotating cast of first-class drummers. The news comes on the heels of a series of performances that have created quite a bit of buzz among band and fans, alike.

While Brownstein and Magner have occasionally invited other musicians to their live shows, the “new Conspirator” has proven to be a new, “full band” sound emerging not only from the group’s mentality, but by featuring a solidified, returning, 4-piece lineup.

Live music fans have come to embrace Conspirator for their signature high energy, electronic-based sets and their legendary album, The Key, which has been a staple of the band’s live repertoire for years. Now, with a firmly set 4-piece band, fans can expect performances featuring increased live improv and a refreshing musical flow, peppered with some surprises. Inspired by new collaborations and the combined musical histories of the performers, Conspirator is set to get the scene talking in 2011.

“The energy coming off of the December Conspirator shows with Michetti was very exciting for Aron and I, and the fans have responded really well,” said Brownstein. “We knew right away we had to take this across the country. There are really exciting places a full band, this full band, can take the classic Conspirator sound. It’s a whole new show each night.”

Known throughout the live music world for high energy, creative guitar shredding with his band RAQ, Chris Michetti became much more familiar to Disco Biscuits fans throughout 2010 when he periodically accompanied the band on stage at places like Red Rocks, Camp Bisco, and on a number of Spring Tour performances. Michetti recently lent his signature handiwork to Conspirator during performances earlier this December, and anyone who caught the early phases of the “new Conspirator” will undeniably be psyched for round two and beyond.

SCI Brings Back Winter Carnival

The String Cheese Incident announces today that in 2011 they will be bringing back the always highly anticipated Winter Carnival. Set for Thursday, March 10, Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12 at the amazing 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, CO, the three-night run continues the long standing tradition of bringing SCI fans and diverse musical guests to Colorado for a snowy celebration. Joining SCI at Winter Carnival 2011 is British producer/electro-artist Ott, influential bluegrass legends J.D. Crowe & The New South and New Orleans’ premier new-school funk band, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk.

The String Cheese Incident community has come to expect a Conscious Alliance Food Drive at SCI events. For Winter Carnival, a 3‐panel event poster will be designed (one panel for each night). As always, the limited edition posters will be made available to concertgoers who contribute 10 non-perishable food items per panel, or 25 items for the complete set. 2010 was a remarkable year for The String Cheese Incident, with more than 15 years of touring under their belt the band entered a new phase where select events and special destinations took the place of long stretches on the road. This new touring model was highlighted by sold out stops at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Horning’s Hideout, and monstrous “Hulaween” Incidents at Hampton Coliseum. 2010 also found SCI launching the acclaimed classic archival series Rhythm of the Road, which kicked-off with the legendary Vol 1: Incident in Atlanta - 11.17.00 show from Atlanta, GA.

Over the Rhine Announces CD & Tour Dates

Over the Rhine is ready to make waves in 2011 with a new release and spring tour dates that will take them to theaters throughout the Midwest and the East Coast. The Long Surrender, the new studio album from the southern Ohio-based husband-and-wife team of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Karin Bergquist, is something rare and wondrous — an intimate epic.

The record, to be released February 8, 2011 on OtR’s own Great Speckled Dog label (named for the couple’s Great Dane, Elroy), marks 20 years since their 1991 debut. It’s the bountiful result of a collaboration between the couple and producer Joe Henry, whose songs they’ve long admired.

“Joe has been quietly making records (well not that quietly, he has won at least two Grammys) that don’t sound like other records bring made,” says Detweiler. “They are a little bit dark and cinematic and funky and unpredictable. It seems like he loves to help performers who have already covered a lot of miles — Mavis Staples, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke, Loudon Wainwright III, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Mose Allison, Allen Toussaint — rediscover the soul of what they do in a new light.” The Long Surrender was recorded at Henry’s Garfield House studio in South Pasadena, Calif.

The band recently previewed The Long Surrender over a series of tour dates last fall, culminating in a weekend long December trifecta of hometown shows in Cincinnati. Performances included the Holiday Homecoming Show, their annual (15 years and counting) Christmas show at the 2,400 seat Taft Theatre; The Christmas Soiree, an intimate Sunday afternoon gathering featuring an acoustic performance, poetry reading, and Q&A with Karin and Linford; and The Long Surrender Premiere, a very special live start-to-finish performance of the album for the donors who made the fan funded record possible.

Earlier that month in Los Angeles, the band was joined onstage at the Troubadour by Joe Henry and Lucinda Williams (and supporting artist Lucy Wainwright Roche, whose special guest was her father, Loudon Wainwright III).

Over the Rhine promises to bring their smoldering live performances to every corner of the globe in 2011 . . . and here is the first round dates:
