Greensky Bluegrass Offers Free Five Song EP Download from New Album, Handguns

An independent band nationally-recognized for their live show, Greensky Bluegrass defy the boundaries of acoustic music with their self-produced fourth studio effort, Handguns, released on October 4.

This new studio offering is a brave expression of what separates their original music from the rest of the bluegrass genre. For years, while the Kalamazoo, MI band has been gaining recognition for their high energy live show, Handguns proves that they can handle themselves in the studio as well.

Recent internet chatter would have you believe that the entire music industry is lost in a vast and inescapable dust bowl; everything that was once thriving and sustainable has now dried into a mere husk of what it once was. But lest we forget, bands used to make their living on the road, playing in front of new audiences every night. Albums were something that were recorded in between tours and then sold on the road to help keep gas in the tank. It’s the way it was and it looks like the way it might become, but the music never stops.

Handguns was recorded in between tours this winter as the band holed up in a studio in Lansing, committing the songs straight-to-tape on the exact recording console that originally birthed Lynyrd Skynyrd’s infamous track "Free Bird” decades earlier. Matching the warmth of the analog sound, vintage microphones were utilized alongside state-of-the-art studio equipment to create a truly blended and artful sonic experience.

This overlap of traditional and forward-thinking runs throughout most every aspect of Greensky Bluegrass. The opening cut is titled "Don't Lie", and the result of "Handguns" is just that, a collection of songs that speak true. Greensky doesn't boast to know it all, but they don't restrain, letting the listener in on the trials and triumphs of their journey.

"Should have been a farmer and blamed it on the weather, with soiled hands and a tired back to show for my efforts," sings Hoffman on the album's title track.  Modest maybe, but as the listener continues, they are relieved that the band did not trade their instruments for plows or cubicles.

Greensky has continued to gain national momentum since they won the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s coveted Band Competition in 2006 and have been invited to play at this summer’s Northwest String Summit, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival and NPR’s Mountain Stage, while also playing at Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot and The Hangout Festivals. They’re a bluegrass band but they’re not. Bluegrass doesn’t have distortion, or horns for that matter. Handguns does.

Of course, none of this happened overnight or without sacrifice. Greensky Bluegrass is just as much a grit of the asphalt band as they are a salt of the earth band, having played over 160 shows nationwide, every year, for the last six years. It was by winning over folks on the band’s never-ending tour that got them where they are today – not by a label, syndicated radio play or being on the shelves at big box stores.

As a bonus for all, Greensky Bluegrass is giving away half of Handguns for free. This five-song Handguns EP is available on the Greensky Bluegrass website for anyone who wants to listen.

The motive? To be heard.  For musicians, the model has changed with satellite radio where the F word flies free and name-your-own-price record releases. One thing remains true, however: when the music is great, people will listen.

Stanley Clarke & Victor Wooten @ the Boulder Theater

STANLEY CLARKE BAND Exploding into the jazz world in 1971, Stanley was a lanky teenager from the Philadelphia Academy of Music. He arrived in New York City and immediately landed jobs with famous bandleaders such as: Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Saunders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz, and a budding young pianist composer named Chick Corea.

All of these musicians recognized immediately the ferocious dexterity and complete musicality the young Clarke possessed on the acoustic bass. Not only was he expert at crafting bass lines and functioning as a timekeeper in the bass- traditional role, Stanley also possessed a sense of lyricism and melody gained from his bass heroes Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro, and others, including non-bass players like John Coltrane. Clarke recognized the opportunity to propel the bass into a viable melodic soloist role and was uniquely qualified to do just that.

Stanley Clarke became the first bassist in history to headline tours, selling out shows worldwide, and have his albums certified gold. The word "legend" was used to describe Stanley by the time he was 25 years old. In 1997 Epic/Sony released: By this tender young age, Stanley was already a celebrated pioneer in fusion jazz music. He was also the first bassist in history to double on acoustic and electric bass with equal virtuosity, power, and fire. His artistry has spanned classical, jazz, R&B and pop idioms. He has already succeeded in a multitude of diverse careers, any one of which would be satisfactory to anyone else. Yet he still pushes on, as invigorated and as passionate about music as that teenage prodigy from Philadelphia with a dream. The Biography of this incredible musician, like Stanley himself, is a continuing work in process.

VICTOR WOOTEN He is an innovator, composer, arranger, lecturer, producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. He is a skilled naturalist and teacher, a published author, a magician, husband and father of four, and a five-time Grammy award winner. But those gifts only begin to tell the tale of this Tennessee titan.

Victor, known for his solo recordings and tours, and as a member of the Grammy-winning super group, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, has won most every major award given to a bass guitarist. He was voted Bassist of the year by Bass Player Magazine three times and is the only person to have won the award more than once.

Continuing to grow as a person, artist, and teacher, Victor Wooten is always willing to share his gifts with all who desire to learn. Offering CDs, DVDs, lectures, workshops, and camps, as well as his groundbreaking novel The Music Lesson (Berklee Publishing - a division of the Penguin Group) Victor Lemonte Wooten is guaranteed to remain a positive force in the music industry.

Trace Bundy & Sungha Jung @ The Boulder Theater

An accomplished acoustic guitar virtuoso, Trace Bundy sells out shows across five continents with his rare combination of expert capo and fingerpicking techniques, unique stage banter, and jawdroppingly difficult arrangements. While his success was built upon a direct connection with his fans-- his videos are attracting 12 million YouTube views and counting--Trace has also garnered the critical acclaim of major media outlets like 'Acoustic Guitar Magazine', earning the title "Most Promising New Talent." It's only fitting he's joining forces with a fellow YouTube phenom and guitar virtuoso, Sungha Jung.

When Sungha Jung was nine years old, he posted a video of himself playing Trace's arrangement of "Pachelbel's Canon". That video went viral and helped launch Sungha's career, leading to 175 million YouTube views, tours of the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and thirteen awards on YouTube by the age of fourteen. Trace and Sungha have teamed up for two of Trace's South Korea tours, as well as a sold-out West Coast tour. Numerous nationwide tours in support of self released records earned the band an underground following. Their song How It Ends was featured on the trailer for the film Everything Is Illuminated, introducing the band to a widening audience. Their performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival was considered a breakout event. In between tours, the band was picked by first time film directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to score Little Miss Sunshine, a 2006 film that would go on to garner four Academy Award nominations. Since its debut performance on Valentine's Day 2009, the band has played numerous shows including sharing the stage with the likes of Amazing Baby, Pink Mountaintops, Wovenhand and The Entrance Band.

With songs as seductively venomous as its name suggests, Snake Rattle Rattle Snake began in October 2008 when veterans of the underground music scene in Denver decided to pursue a mutual interest in darkly atmospheric music with a grounding in dance rhythms. More Info / Buy Tickets

explosive live shows. Their debut album was included in NME's "Top 50
Albums of the Decade".

Black Seeds + Katchafire @ The Fox Theatre

Originating from Wellington, New Zealand, The Black Seeds have carved out their reputation through platinum selling albums, a masterful 8-piece live show, and a unique sound that fuses infectious grooves and melodies with undiluted roots music. With numerous European festival tours and releases behind them, and a successful 2009 North American release, their following continues to spread quickly around the globe.

Led by the vocals of Barnaby Weir and Daniel Weetman, at its core The Black Seeds music is a boundary-crossing sound fusion of big-beat funk, dub, soul, and afro-beat, mixed with vintage roots-reggae. Described by Clash Magazine as ‘one of the best reggae acts on the planet’, their legendary 8-piece live show brings the raw energy and good vibes wherever it goes. They now have countless sell-out New Zealand and Australasian tours behind them, and regularly perform at many of Europe’s biggest festivals.
The Black Seeds manage to play beyond the normal boundaries of reggae without compromising the music’s heart. While “Rotten Apple” has all the thump of a vintage Parliament-Funkadelic jam , “Afrophone”’s punchy horns and get- on-the-good-foot rhythm recall James Brown and the J.B.s at their peak – and the Seeds manage to pull it all off while retaining their voice. They make the blend of sounds feel absolutely natural. This is not a reggae band dropping a nov- elty funk cover into the middle of a set, this is simply Black Seeds music.” - Jambase.com (U.S.A) – Nov. ‘09
Reggae is one of the bloodlines of New Zealand music -- which accounts for the extraordinary success of Hamilton's Katchafire who, emerged as the hardest working band in the country. Their astonishing debut album, the prophetically named Revival, sold in excess of 30,000 copies (double platinum). The success of the band was evident in album sales, opening shows for the likes of Michael Franti and Spearhead, gigs all across the country (three in one day on Waitangi Day 2004, in Hamilton, Manukau and Nelson), three tours to Australia and New Caledonia, and most recently a stadium-filling headlining show in Fiji.
From humble beginnings ‘jamming’ in a garage, Katchafire is a melting pot of unique members, including two generations of one family and diverse musical perspectives – yet this blend is exquisitely aligned with the essence of reggae which can be an expression of social and political persuasions, hardship and pain, relaxation and reflection. Dubbed New Zealand’s hardest working band by national media, Katchafire have now completed numerous national and seven international tours. The band has moved audiences around the globe with three tours in New Caledonia, one tour in each Fiji and Hawaii and 10 Australian tours.
Katchafire’s unique, proudly New Zealand reggae style envelopes cross-cultural and cros-generational audiences in the revitalising vibes of healing music, encouraging sing-alongs and regeneration of soul. The Katchafire flame continues to burn ever brighter and stronger.

Lotus Tours in Support of Live Album Escaping Sargasso Sea

photo(s) by P. Emma - Grateful Web ©2007- for the Grateful Web

For those waiting for a concert experience with the dynamics of a rock band (read: no laptops), the dance inducing rhythms of club music, and the sophistication of modern electronica, an unlikely musical alternative has arrived in the form of the band Lotus.  Formed at a Mennonite college that had banned on-campus dancing as late as the 1980's, Lotus brings their club-worthy beats and rocking instrumental anthems to theaters throughout the country this fall.  No glow-stick bracelets, pretentious Can trivia, or expensive distressed fashion required.

Lotus's new release, Escaping Sargasso Sea (May 2007), is a double-disc live album that draws from two previous studio albums, Nomad and The Strength of Weak Ties, along with never before released material.  From the post/math-rock of "When H Binds to O" to the slippery dance beats of "Wax," this collection shows Lotus's ability to deconstruct, stretch, and rebuild their compositions spontaneously on stage.  Restraining from flaunting their individual chops, Lotus builds compositions on catchy melodies and heavy grooves.

The five-piece band has creatively fused electronic dance music with instrumental post-rock for eight years. The result is an explosive live show that has made crowds get down across the US, Canada, and Japan. Armed with a massive light rig and one of the most energetic shows on the circuit, Lotus proves why they have become a go-to act for late night festival slots.  This tour takes the band into renowned theatres nationwide including the Ogden Theatre in Denver, the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Park West in Chicago, and the Bowery Ballroom in New York.

Lotus' complete list of confirmed Fall Tour dates is as follows:
09/28 Paradise Rock Club Boston, MA

Later this year, look for a Lotus remix project with LCD Soundsystem label-mate Juan Maclean.

What critics have been saying about Lotus:

"…intent on creating a new genre (few try that these days)...it is rock, and smart disco, funk and soul, piano pop, world music, and modern alienation stuff and jazz fusion you can dance to all wrapped up in cellophane."  -Big Takeover

"In this new terrain in which lie endless creative possibilities, Lotus continue to expand upon its post-everything rock/electronic/jazz/free-form pastiche."  -Big Shot Magazine

"If you were listening to the music of Philadelphia five-piece Lotus right now, you would be dancing. There's no doubt about that. Their grooves are tight, and fast, and fun, and one would be hard-pressed not to shake it hard at a Lotus show." -Jambands.com

BASSNECTAR Tours In Support of New Album, Underground Communication

photo by: Shauna Regan - for the Grateful Web

Underground heavyweight Bassnectar released his new album, Underground Communication, on OM Records Tuesday, May 8.  Fresh off a recent appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, look for Bassnectar live at clubs and festivals throughout the U.S. this spring and summer. Voted San Francisco's "number one DJ" three years in a row and currently the eighth most downloaded electronic artist on iTunes, Bassnectar is stirring up quite the buzz. Look for Bassnectar in current/upcoming issues of ALARM, BMP, DJ MAGAZINE, DJ TIMES, HARP, REMIX, URB, XLR8R and many others.

It's stylistically specific, yet it's an eclectic, full spectrum adventure.

Viglione Tours in March & April with Fellow Bostonians, HUMANWINE

Dresden Dolls- for the Grateful Web

Dresden Dolls' drummer Brian Viglione keeps busy while the band takes a rare break from touring.  Look for him this spring sitting in with gypsy punkers HUMANWINE.

Brian Viglione, the dramatic, spot-on drummer of punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls, has been playing music plenty - despite a rare respite from the Dolls' typically non-stop touring schedule.  On the heels of a winter run starring and playing drums in the American Repertoire Theatre's production of The Onion Cellar (Cambridge, MA) and a residency at Boston's Lilypad with The Gil Aharon Trio (Gil Aharon/piano and Andrew DiMola/upright bass), Viglione today announces an even busier spring, packed with guest tour appearances, drum clinics, and even the filming of an online instructional DVD (to be released on disc and online this spring).

Look for Viglione on tour in March and April with fellow Bostonians, and comrades in the city's underground gypsy-music scene, HUMANWINE.  Much like The Dresden Dolls a few year's back, HUMANWINE was voted "Best New Act" at the 2006 Boston Music Awards and in the Boston Phoenix/WFNX Best Music Poll 2006.
