Introducing YELLOWBIRDS from Sam Cohen of Apollo Sunshine

Yellowbirds is the moniker for the latest musical exploits of Sam Cohen--songwriter, guitarist and vocalist in the psychedelic collective Apollo Sunshine.  Next Tuesday, October 12, Yellowbirds will release its debut track "The Rest Of My Life." The song is the first of three to be made available in the coming months, hinting at what's to come as Cohen puts the finishing touches on The Color, a full-length studio recording due in early 2011.

Sam Cohen grew up in Houston, Texas, and while the Texas of his teens may have been home to Big Oil, Enron, the Bush family, and the drab gray Astros jerseys of the 90's, he prefers to think of it as the Texas of yore, home to Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, the Space Program, and rainbow orange Astros jerseys.  It stands to reason, then, that his current home of New York City must be the mythical Empire City: Rocky Mountains of architecture, epicenter of modern art, home to Charles Mingus and The Velvet Underground.

It was with these timeless inspirations in mind that Cohen created The Color by Yellowbirds, his "solo" debut.  Double-speed auto-harp glissandos, glowing backwards pedal-steel, bubbling echo and fuzz guitars coalesce into a warm wall of sound.  As existential lyrical themes emerge, delivered nonchalantly over psyched-out aural landscapes, the picture emerges of a dust-blown, 4th dimensional Future West.  This is Cohen's quixotic world where "only the purist tones can be heard."

MARIO PAVONE'S ORANGE DOUBLE TENOR At Cornelia Street Cafe

Playscape Recordings is proud to announce the forthcoming world premiere of bassist/composer Mario Pavone's Arc Suite t/pi t/po, a suite of original compositions commissioned by chamber music America's 2009 new jazz works: commissioning and ensemble development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Pavone wrote the music for his long standing sextet, orange double tenor, which will perform the work live for the first time on june 8+9th at the Cornelia Street Café, before heading into the recording studio on june 10+11th.

The subsequent recording, also titled arc suite t/pi t/po, will be released by playscape recordings in November to coincide with Pavone's 70th birthday and 45th year in music. Orange Double Tenor features Tony Malaby and Jimmy Greene (saxophones), Dave Ballou (trumpet), Peter Madsen (piano), and Gerald Cleaver, (drums). Also part of this project are Steven Bernstein and Michael Musillami who, along with Pavone and Ballou, each arranged individual movements within the suite.

"I have reflected on the 1960's ... a time of incredible change and transformation ... and on being there and taking in not just the musicality of Trane, Cecil, Ornette, Mingus and Monk, but the physical prescence of these giants and the sociopolitical issues their work addressed. I look to re-envision and re-interpret in today's idiom, and in my compositional systems, the feeling, ethos and energy of that time and those players."

YOKO ONO Climbs To Top 5 On The Billboard Club Play Charts

YOKO ONO continues to keep her fingers on the pulse of underground and commercial dance music with her new single, “GIVE ME SOMETHING” (THE REMIXES). Currently #4 (with a bullet) on the Billboard Club Play Chart (issue date: 03/27/2010), it is the latest offering in the pioneering avant-garde icon’s acclaimed remix series, that has spawned 5 #1 dance singles: “I’M NOT GETTING ENOUGH”, “GIVE PEACE A CHANCE”, “NO NO NO”, “EVERYMAN / EVERYWOMAN” and her seminal “WALKING ON THIN ICE”.

Since 2001, Yoko’s alter-electronic ego, ONO, has been pumping out revamped reworks of classics from her vast catalog for a new digital generation. Partnering with cutting edge producers and collaborators such as FLAMING LIPS, PET SHOP BOYS, BASEMENT JAXX, DANNY TENAGLIA, SPIRITUALIZED, CSS, FELIX DA HOUSECAT, ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS and PEACHES, she has ingeniously added chart-topping dance-music heroine to her renowned status as controversial performance-art innovator and punk rock pioneer.

On the brilliant “Give Me Something” (originally taken from John and Yoko’s Grammy Award winning 1980 masterpiece DOUBLE FANTASY), ONO taps RICHARD MOREL, DAVE AUDE, RALPHI ROSARIO, ROBERTO RODRIGUEZSTONEBRIDGE, SPARKS, JUNIOR BOYS, ALEX TRAXX (and others) to deliver compelling interpretations for the 21st Century.

Slated as a green release (digital, no materials used or abused) later this month (March 2010) on MIND TRAIN / TWISTED Records, “GIVE ME SOMETHING” (THE REMIXES) is another irresistible reinvention from the timeless visionary, who continues to be a major influential force on the cultural landscape.

John Ellis & Double-Wide To Release 'Puppet Mischief' On ObliqSound

Brooklyn saxophonist John Ellis is gearing up for a busy 2010. On February 23, ObliqSound will release Puppet Mischief, the second album with his New Orleans-based band Double-Wide, which in addition to Ellis features Brian Coogan on organ, Matt Perrineon sousaphone and Jason Marsalis on drums, plus special guests Gregoire Maret on harmonica and Alan Ferber on trombone. The recording continues the former New Orleanian's love affair with the Big Easy, drawing inspiration from the rich vein of music the city has given the world, while also taking cues, in Ellis' own words, from "carnivals, state fairs, children laughing, clowns and dancing."

The highlights of Puppet Mischief begin from its very first funky moments. The leadoff track, "Okra & Tomatoes," takes its title from a phrase that represents life's perfect pairings. That's followed by "Fauxfessor," a tightly synced, off-kilter New Orleans romp full of surprising twists. The elegiac "Dewey Dah" displays each instrument's individual colorings, particularly Perrine's sousaphone, and reaffirms Ellis' penchant for compositions that are never static, always morphing. Among the album's other standouts are the wild, teasing title track, featuring a stunning harmonica solo by Maret, and the back-to-back "Carousel" and "Dubinland Carnival." The former, which Ellis calls a "wistful circus tune," takes on a bluesy patina and incorporates several dramatic transitions, while its companion piece, which Ellis likens to the feel of a Fellini film, features an epic sax-trombone conversation and some of Marsalis' most fired-up drumming of the set. "Chorale"speaks for itself -- written originally with string quartet in mind, it instead became a beautiful showcase for the four horns. "Héroes de Acción" is Ellis' idea of soundtrack music for a Spanish cartoon crime-fighting hero while the album's closing track, "This Too Shall Pass," is the perfect sendoff, a calming, almost whimsical paean to the acceptance of flux as the one constant in life.

The release of Puppet Mischief follows up one of the busiest years in Ellis' career, one that saw him accompanying a diverse array of musicians ranging from Sting to Mos Def to the Cuban drummer Ignacio Berroa, touring Europe with the John Patitucci Trio and, most significantly, the debut of The Ice Siren, Ellis' hour-long through-composed narrative composition for string quartet, tuba, percussion, guitar, vibes, winds and two singers. The piece, a collaborative effort with playwright Andy Bragen, debuted at New York City's Jazz Gallery in May 2009.

Ellis, now 35, has never been an artist who stays in one artistic place very long. Born in North Carolina, he took piano lessons as a child, soon switched to clarinet, and first became seriously drawn to music when he heard the music of legendary ragtime composer Scott Joplin. After moving to New Orleans, Ellis' jazz chops improved radically as he gigged with the likes of Ellis Marsalis and Walter Payton. After three years in the Big Easy, he went north to New York City, graduating from the New School and settling into the city's thriving jazz scene. Along the way, Ellis spent six years as a member of jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter's group, cutting four albums with them while also developing his own sound. He cut his debut as a leader, The Language of Love, in 1996, then didn't record under his own name again until 2002, when he released the critically acclaimed Roots, Branches and Leaves. That was followed by One Foot in the Swamp (2005), By a Thread (2006), and his first with Double-Wide, Dance Like There's No Tomorrow (2008).

John Ellis & Double-Wide will perform throughout 2010, including a January residency at Snug Harbor in New Orleans. Upcoming winter dates include:

van dykVOLUME is a heavyweight two-disc anthology of PAUL VAN DYK’s most memorable and requested releases of original songs from his studio albums 45 RPM (1994), Seven Ways (1996), Out There And Back (2000), the Grammy-nominated Reflections (2003) and In Between (2007), plus various remix productions.  CD 1 is a mixed collection of his original works including “White Lies,” featuring the Pussycat Dolls’ Jessica Sutta, “Nothing But You” and “Time Of Our Lives” with Vega 4, whose lead singer Johnny McDaid also lends his vocals to the brand new song “Home” that was created specially for VOLUME.  Also highlighted are VAN DYK’s stellar hits “Forbidden Fruit” and “We Are Alive” that achieved worldwide chart success.

The set additionally includes a new mix by VAN DYK--as constantly requested by his fans--of his timeless classic “For An Angel.”  Also available to coincide with the release will be a remix EP of a number of new mixes by Spencer & Hill, Miika Kuisma, Filo and Peri, Dave Darrell and others of “For An Angel.”  CD 2 consists of his most popular remixes of artists such as U2, Depeche Mode, New Order, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.  The complete track listing follows below.

In support of VOLUME, the live electronic music performer who’s known for his creative on-the-spot mastery will embark on an intense tour, appearing in 17 cities in 17 days.  The VOLUME tour kicks off June 11 in Scottsdale, AZ and will take VAN DYK throughout middle-America, making stops in such markets as Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, Detroit, Chicago, Nashville and Atlanta.  The leg wraps June 26 with a headlining spot at the Electric Daisy Carnival in downtown Los Angeles, the two-day festival where over 100,000 people are expected.  Select dates prior to the tour will have VAN DYK hitting San Francisco and Las Vegas for headlining one-off Memorial Day weekend performances.  The highly anticipated tour is one of the most sought-after tickets this summer.  Fans can check out www.wantickets.com/paulvandyk, the official ticket provider of the PAUL VAN DYK - VOLUME U.S. Tour, for more information.

Since announcing the PAUL VAN DYK iPhone Application last Monday, April 21, the YouTube link which depicts him demonstrating the different assets of the app has already received over 10,000 views.  “What you have is different tools that … are very, very helpful if you’re a DJ,” VAN DYK told Deanna Rilling of the Las Vegas Weekly (4/23/09) about the new technology.  “Van Dyk explains that he didn’t want a boring app that people lose interest in after a few minutes. ‘I wanted to have something more than just a gadget,’ he says. Van Dyk’s app has BPM, decibel and frequency meters, plus a torch function to illuminate the booth in case a DJ loses a contact lens or drink ticket.”

It has been a quick rise for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee. Their virtuoso playing and edgy song craft recently compelled Rolling Stone to choose Umphrey's "a band to watch" in their annual Hot Issue. Relix magazine put them on the cover of their December 2004 issue and the prestigious Chicago Music Awards bestowed upon Umphrey's McGee the coveted Best Rock Entertainer of the Year award. Booked coast to coast by the Monterey Peninsula Booking Agency, the band recently sold out three nights at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, two nights at Irving Plaza, San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, and the list goes on.
